It was broad daylight when he came knocking on her door. They didn't even realize how fast the hours went by and the sun had now surrendered to the moon.
They didn't admit it, but neither of them have had a proper night's sleep since the day that they had got back from Afghanistan.
Insomnia had become one of Deeks worst enemies since he first experienced it about a year ago. He never opened up to Kensi about it, but truth is the sleeplessness almost drove him mad. His mind was constantly high on adrenaline, exploring unwanted territories and digging up long forgotten memories and surfacing fears he never knew he had. All he needed was peace, and he only found it in Kensi's presence. Her touch had soothed his pain, the sound of her voice had calmed him down, her piercing look had reassured him that she was going to help him out.
He slowly opened his eyes and looked down at her sleeping figure, her face nuzzled into his neck and her hand lying on his chest. Soon memories of that one night flooded his mind. He wanted her; there was no doubt about that. He even wanted her right now. He longed to taste her lips, touch her soft skin, breath her in; slowly make love to her all night long. He'd be lying if he said he hadn't thought or dreamt of it during her absence. Though, he knew this was the most inappropriate timing. He patiently waited for her for five months. He was determined to wait for as long as she needed to come back to him.
Unconsciously he pulled her closer wrapping his hand tighter around her. She didn't resist. Instead, she let herself sunk into him letting out a soft moan.
"I don't know if this is what we normally do, but it somehow feels right," she whispered in his ear, never drawing away from his embrace.
"You are awake," he brushed a lock of hair from her face "we really should get up otherwise we won't sleep at all during the night."
"What time is it?" she rubbed her eyes but soon her hand rested on Deeks chest again.
"It's almost 8 p.m" he gently rubbed his thumb on her upper arm.
She hated breaking contact with him, but forced herself to stand up anyway. She looked down at his half asleep figure and a smile formed on her lips. She hadn't been able to sleep in three weeks, but this man achieved the impossible. He unknowingly and effortlessly helped her relax in his arms. How did he do that? Why did that man have this huge affect on her?
As she gazed him, she felt a hot burning sensation boiling deep inside her. Her heart was pounding fast, her breathing was uneven. She knew that feeling. It was lust. God, she was in love with him. She ran her hand through her hair trying to process the meaning of that realization.
How could she be in love with him? She barely knew the man. Somehow though, her heart seemed to know him all too well as she found herself leaning forward to kiss him. Thankfully she managed to restrain herself and pull back before Deeks opened his eyes.
She should wait. Obviously, both of them had been through so much over the last years and they deserved their happy ending, but now it wasn't the time. She wanted their kiss to mean something. She wanted to remember him.
She let out a deep sigh and gently tapped his chest. "Come on shaggy. Time to get up."
"I know it was my idea to get up, but now I am having second thoughts," he whined.
"I said get up," she stood up and grabbed his upper arm forcing him off the couch. "Besides, I am hungry. I need food!"
Deeks fidgeted his styled by pillow hair and then he felt it. His stomach was growling in hunger too.
"Do you have anything healthy and eatable in here?" he started walking towards the kitchen.
"Hey!" Kensi exclaimed.
"Well you are not exactly known for your cooking skills Kens," he opened the fridge and his jaw dropped. It was full of fresh fruit, vegetables, orange juice and bubble water.
"Since when are you a fan of these?" he held an apple and a piece of broccoli.
"Since always!" Kensi defended herself.
"No," Deeks closed the fridge door "I eat healthy and you mock me for that. You on the other hand, eat breakfast burritos and chocolate donuts and drink beer instead of water. The only time you attempted to make a smoothie, you nearly got me killed. "
"Well then you should be grateful that I have now adopted a healthier lifestyle."
Deeks smiled sadly. "I really should. But this isn't the Kensi I used to know."
Kensi swallowed hard. All this time she was trying to be someone else but deep down she knew it was wrong. This man though, was more than willing to embrace the flaws she tried to keep hidden.
"Can I be honest with you?" she bit her lips.
"Always!"
She walked past him and opened the fridge taking out a turnip.
"I hate this stuff. I only keep them here cause my mother keeps bringing them. I don't eat turnips," she tossed it in the garbage can.
"…or eggplants," they followed the turnips in the can….
"…or radish, lettuce, chicories, cabbage…. I am sick of all this shit," soon the can was almost full.
"You really want to know what I've been craving this whole time?"
"Deeks looked at her using his kinkiest smile. "Drunken Pigs?"
"Yes!" she exclaimed in excitement "Where can I get one of those?"
"I know just the right place," within seconds Deeks had taken his phone out and he was ordering from their favorite Yummy Yummy Heart Attack.
"You have the take out's phone on speed dial," Kensi laughed.
"Well, you never know when it might come in handy. Take for instance now!"
"You are weird."
"I know, I've been told before!"
"What about dessert?" Kensi licked her lips. "All I have is frozen Yoghurt."
"You hate frozen yoghurt!" Deeks opened the refrigerators and tossed it in the can along with the rest of the unwanted food.
"Don't get me started on that. So…dessert?"
Deeks shrugged his shoulders and thought about it for a minute. "Well, we can't fly to NY for cronuts so how about your favorite crepes from Jill's."
"What is cronut and who is Jill?" she frowned her eyebrows.
"Oh my God you don't remember cronuts?"Deeks shook his head. "I can't even describe this sensational pastry. It's like a donut/ croissant hybrid. We are going to NY this week, I am not taking no for an answer. You need to taste that"
"Why bother flying all the way to NY for a….how do you call it…a cronut? Can't we get it from here somewhere?"
"Cronut is one of a kind. You can only find them in this bakery in NY after you have waited in the line for hours."
"Ok, no desert is THAT good to make me stand in the line for hours!"
"That's an insult," Deeks pressed his fingers on her lips. "Once you've experienced its devine taste, you will understand!"
"Just take ten pounds of cronuts then and eat your heart out."
"You see that's the catch. You can only take five at a time."
"Ok, wait a minute," she raised her hands in defeat. "So, after you have flown to NY and waited in line for hours, you can only get five of these suckers? Are you serious? How much do they cost?"
"Five bucks!"
"FIVE BUCKS?" she shouted. "You are kidding right? Who would go through all this for just a cronut."
"You did!" Deeks smiled.
"What? I flew all the way to NY to buy a cronut? There is no way I would do that," she shook her head.
"Well, I am sorry to disappoint you, but you did. Although, you didn't get it for yourself. You got it for me."
Kensi's mouth dropped open but no words could come out. She did all that so that she could get him his favorite dessert? She had never done that for a man – as far as she remembered of course – not even for Jack.
"Why?" she hesitantly asked.
"I was in a dark place and you wanted to help me out. Now, it's my turn to return the favor."
"What about Jill's place? Is that within walking distance at least?"
"Yes it is," he laughed "Jill makes the best crepes you have ever tasted. Your words exactly!"
"Ok then, crepes it is," she nodded.
Soon the door bell rung and the drunken pigs arrived. She reacted the exact same way she did the first time she tasted it, almost drooling in delight.
Even in the dim light of the living room she radiated a bright light. He knew he was only imagining it but to him, she was perfect. Still a bit damaged, but perfect.
And all that mattered was that she was slowly coming back to him!
