Awakening
I own nothing, Disney, who owns Marvel, and JK who owns her own work have all of the claims.
I have said this many, many times now…do you believe me yet?
I hadn't really been surprised when I reappeared next to Bruce, only to find myself only a few feet away from Fury and Coulson as well.
But boy, I had been glad that I had teleported in invisible. I had just wandered around what appeared to be the Bridge of the….flying aircraft carrier? I had definitely been surprised at that. I had heard about the Helicarrier of course but for some reason I had never discovered the fact that if flew. I had decided right there and then to comb through SHIELD's files with a toothpick. I didn't like being surprised.
I had almost started pranking people in boredom when Bruce was finally led away by Romanoff.
My eyebrow had twitched when Romanoff told Bruce that they had all of the toys. I couldn't help but snort, Stark technology was years ahead of anything SHIELD had.
"Oh," I commented softly, knowing that Bruce would be able to hear me. "Not all of them."
I chuckled as I saw Bruce freeze. I bet he wasn't expecting that! I watched as he shook his head and continued on after Romanoff. My gut was telling me that he didn't believe that I was really there. Deciding to show him that I was, I let my sparks flare around me for just a moment.
It seemed to do the trick, as his eyes widened in recognition and confusion before Romanoff led him out off of the Bridge.
I was about to follow Bruce and Natasha when a splash of gold caught my eyes and I turned to see Steve Rogers staring out of the glass wall in barely concealed awe.
I tried not to scowl, I really did. But it didn't work, as one stretched across my face anyway. While I personally didn't have a problem with the man who had been an ice cube for seventy years; the fact that Howard had treated Dad so badly over it left a foul taste in my mouth.
I wanted to prank him really badly, but I managed to control myself. That was until Fury joined Rogers and they started talking.
"Impressed?" Fury asked without looking at the man.
"To say the least," Rogers replied softly. I inched closer to the men, keeping my footsteps and movements silence.
I had to duck under a few agents, and about half way through the Bridge I got tired of dodging and jumped into the air. Using my hovering ability, I leapt over the rest of the room and landed only a few feet away from the soldier legend and SHIELD director.
"I would imagine that this is troubling for you." Fury stated and I looked at him in shock….was he trying to be nice?
I snapped out of it as Rogers laughed bitterly but continued to stare out the window. "Troubling? No offence director but I put that plane into the ice so that no one would ever be able to use that cube again. I didn't expect to wake up, but I did, in a whole new world. And not even a few months later I get told that the very same cube that I was ready to die so it'd never see the light of day again, is now in enemy hands. So yes, this is a bit more than troubling for me, Sir."
I looked wide eyed at the man, ok, maybe he wasn't so bad. After all, I never really had tried to stop and think about how it all was for him; I just had focused on the fact that because of him Howard was too obsessed to care about Dad.
I wasn't going to give him a few cards, but I was going to reserve judgment for the time being.
I almost chuckled when I saw that Fury was looking uncomfortable and like he had no idea how to respond to that. I also noticed that a few other agents were now eavesdropping on the conversation, although they were pretty good at hiding that fact.
After another moment of silence I shrugged and decided that now would be a good time to check back up on Bruce.
With a flare of my sparks I was gone, hoping that I wouldn't appear in the middle of the open sky.
Third POV
Only a few moments after the young half-Immortal vanished to find her friend Fury was saved from the awkwardness from his right hand.
"Sir," Hill stated as she appeared behind the two men.
Fury almost sighed in relief as he turned towards his second in command.
"What is it?" He asked, for once glad that there was a problem that needed his attention.
"Well, sir, that's the problem. We're not sure." Hill replied and she had to restrain herself from biting her lip.
Fury raised his eyebrow and nodded Hill over to a more secluded part of the Bridge; his agents were gossipers after all.
After they had put a respective amount of space between them and the working agents Fury gave Hill a dark look, silently asking her elaborate.
"For the last few minutes we've been picking up strange energy spikes. We can't identify the energy, though we have concluded that it isn't from any of our systems or agents." Hill reported and Fury nodded gravely.
"Are they coming from a solitary source?" Fury asked, wondering if Loki had something to do with it.
Hill shook her head, "We don't know yet Sir, but they seem to be only originating from the Bridge at the moment."
Fury sighed and wished that his old mentor Director Jackel was here. Lynx would have been able to handle the crazy that was taking over.
"Monitor it, and keep me posted. I want to know what it is, where it's coming from, and if it's a threat."
Hill nodded and in an instant Fury was standing alone once again. He sighed, when had a bucket of crazy been dumped on the world?
Penny's POV
I had to admit, watching Bruce was boring. He hadn't been given a lab without windows; in fact his lab had A LOT of windows. I had watched as he protested to Romanoff who had just ignored him and walked away. I had wanted to electrocute her for that.
I was still contemplating doing it to be honest.
I couldn't leave Bruce to deal with their fear of heights by himself, so I had discretely shown Bruce the button that closed the metal blinds….or shield doors, whichever term you preferred.
Anyway, Bruce had calmed down after that, and after telling him that I would be around if he needed me I phased through the door and started exploring.
Ok, even though Stark Tower was a master of technology, the Helicarrier was impressive. Of course, Dad and I could have built one better.
Avoiding the agents hadn't been very hard, as they all seemed to avoid the center of the hall. I assumed that that was where Fury usually walked; and I imagined that getting in Fury's way was bad for your health.
I found the quarters, the bathrooms, the file rooms, the gyms and training rooms, the shooting range, and I had just stolen an apple from the cafeteria when Dad finally checked in.
"I thought you said that you would be right back?" Tony said sarcastically and I rolled my eyes.
"Actually, I said that I wouldn't be long, there's a difference." I pointed out with a chuckle and I just knew that Dad was rolling his eyes.
"That's not the point. I thought that you were going to be home by now." Tony said and I heard the sound of worry in his voice.
I paused in the middle of the hall, and after making sure that no one was around I slipped into a random storage room.
"Aw, is someone worried about me?" I teased him as I peeked around in the boxes that line the walls. It was dark and dusty in here, and I wanted to know what SHIELD had lying around.
"Yes." Dad's short and sharp reply caused me to freeze in my tracks. I instantly felt guilty and closed the box that I had been digging through.
"I'm sorry Daddy," I mumbled, Dad was worried because there was a Asgardian running around with questionable intentions.
I heard Tony sigh, and knew that he wasn't really mad at me. "It's alright I suppose. So, how's big green doing?"
I rolled my eyes at Tony's name for Bruce as I started peering at the various boxes again.
"Eh, nothing much. SHIELD got him here faster than I thought they would, but the Helicarrier is impressive." I said as I became confused. I was staring at a box with Director Lynx Jackel on the side and for some reason the name felt extremely familiar to me.
"We could build a better one." Dad stated and I laughed lightly at him.
"Oh I know," I reassured him. Tony had a problem any time I complemented SHIELD, although it didn't happen often.
"Oh, Dad, guess who they dragged out of the closet to join the party?" I asked as I pulled the box out and lifted the lid.
The contents were various items that all looked personal, like clothes, files, even a few pictures. But they looked old, by at least twenty or thirty years.
"Who?" Dad asked and it took me a moment to reply.
"Rogers is back on his feet, shocked, and with a few mental scars I think, but he's no longer a Capsicle." I told him as I pulled out a yellowing picture and looked at it wide eyed.
There were two people in the picture, a woman who appeared to be in her early to late thirties, she had brown hair cut into a spiky bob and was wearing what seemed to be an old SHIELD uniform. She had an evil smile on her face that reminded me of Hel when she was pranking, and bright green eyes.
The man to her right was younger, by at least ten years. He was black and had short buzzed hair. He was also wearing a SHIELD uniform but his seemed different, less bold, or important. He had a depressed look on his face, and was leaning slightly away from the woman like she was about to hit him. This man also looked familiar, but it wasn't that that stopped me in my tracks.
"Brilliant." Dad laughed but I was only half listening. "I'm gonna have to use that."
It was the bandage over his eye, the same eye that Fury was missing.
"Bloody hell." I whispered, had I seriously just found a picture of like...twenty year old Fury?!
"Pen? What's wrong?" Dad's concerned voice snapping me out of my daze.
"Well, you won't believe this but I just found a picture of Fury when he was in his twenties!" I gasped out, and mentions of Bruce and Rogers left the conversation.
"Really? Oh this is gold, scan it and send it will yah? I have to see this!" Dad laughed and I knew that he was thinking about how this was brilliant blackmail material.
"Ok, but just don't tell anyone we have it yet." I told him as I pulled out my tablet and took a pic of the picture. Two clicks later the picture was saved to Jarvis and on its way to Dad's computer.
I knew when he got it a few moments later because he burst out laughing.
"Oh this is amazing, perfect blackmail material. I just wonder who the chick that has Fury on his toes is." Dad laughed and I smiled, my father rocked.
"Well, I'm not sure." I told him with a shrug he couldn't see. "But I'd assume that she's Director Lynx Jackel."
Dad's laughter faded and he asked, "What makes you say that?"
"Because her name is on the box." I drawled and I knew that if I could see him, Dad's face would be bright red.
"Oh, ha, ha, ha." Dad snarked and I snickered; oh it was too fun not to tease him.
Suddenly I stiffened as I heard the storage room's door slide open. With wide eyes I put the picture back in the box and slid the box back onto the shelf.
I didn't stick around to see who had intruded, and just Flashed (using my new 2.0 version) away.
"So, are you going to come back to the Tower?" Dad asked once I reappeared a safe distance away.
Wandering down an empty corridor I shrugged and replied, "Think I'm going to stick around; do some recon, get some Intel, keep an eye on thing. Yah know?"
Dad sighed, "I don't like it, but alright."
I smirked; Dad would kill for the chance to go snooping around SHIELD.
"Just keep your com open and keep me updated." Dad asked as I turned a corner and almost ran into someone.
Thankfully I ducked out of the way just in time, and the random agent didn't even notice a thing.
"Always do." I told him as I narrowed my eyes.
Now, where would a free computer be?
It was actually pretty interesting what you could find when you actually have access to everything SHIELD has, on and off of the server.
It was pure gold!
It hadn't even taken me ten minutes to find a computer with full access in an isolated room. One minute after finding it, my tablet was plugged in and thirty seconds later, I had access to the gold mine of SHIELD information.
After implanting a few worms in the major systems to keep tabs on everything, I just started browsing for anything intriguing when I fell to the floor in laughter.
Who knew that SHIELD agents each had their own 'private' server completely filled with blackmail material on everyone that worked there?
I had seen everything now. For I just saw a picture of Fury in a tutu.
I hadn't even been in their systems twenty minutes and oh, the gold I had found! Fury in a tutu had just been the tip of the iceberg! I had found a picture of Romanoff with rainbow hair, Barton with bunny ears, Coulson covered in feathers, Hill in a maid's outfit, and a video of Fury walking into the bridge followed by Darth Vader's theme song!
Jarvis had been copying it all, and even the AI had claimed that it was amusing. A freaking AI!
Sadly, I was pulled away from the blackmail goldmine as one of my worms popped up, bringing my attention to the information that SHIELD had just found on Loki.
Apparently, he was in Germany. I had been a bit surprised but considering their facial search had come back with a 67% match (and they had gotten his picture off of a crappy security camera) there was a decent chance it was him. No sooner than I thought this another pop-up appeared, stating that the search now had a 78% match, in the same place.
"Guess it's him then." I shrugged and tapped the com. "Dad?"
"Yeah, what's up?" Dad asked sounding tense. Worry flooded me as I quickly hacked into SHIELD's satellite and pulled up an aerial view of the area, as well as the local security feed.
"You busy?" I asked and I heard something clang in the background as Tony put something down. I narrowed my eyes as I saw Loki, formally dressed, entering a gala.
Something didn't smell right.
"Not terribly, why? Do you have something?" Dad questioned and I detected a hint of eagerness in his voice.
"Going stir crazy?" I asked as I hacked into the gallery's cameras and he chuckled.
"Not everyone gets to sneak around SHIELD headquarters." He drawled and I rolled my eyes.
"Well then, good news. SHIELD just got a hit on Loki; he's in Stuttgard, Germany. Have no clue what he's doing there, but he just entered a gala."
"Seriously?" Dad asked in surprise, and I chuckled lightly.
"Totally, have him on camera and everything now." I stated as I watched him wander around. My Duty's started to squirm and I cursed. "Dad, my stomach's telling me that he isn't there to enjoy the champagne. You need to get in the air."
"I've been waiting to hear that." Dad laughed, "I'm getting suited up now."
"Good," I said zooming in on Loki's wandering form. "I'll keep an eye on Loki from here."
"Penny," The hesitation in Dad's voice caused me to pause in my typing. Another worm had just told me that the Captain and Romanoff had taken a Chopper and were on their way to Germany.
"Yeah, Dad?" I asked, having a feeling that I wouldn't like what he was going to say.
"Look, I know that you can handle yourself, but please, just let us handle this." My eyebrow twitched, yup, I was right. Didn't like it one bit.
"But Dad…." I tried to protest but he cut me off.
"Please just listen to me on this? The whole thing smells off to me and I don't want you getting hurt. We don't know how powerful this guy is, or what he wants. We know that he has an extremely powerful object in his position, as well as many of SHIELD's men; and he's powerful in his own right. He already hurt you once with that Destroyer thing of his; I don't want you getting hurt again." Dad stated and I bit my lip.
"Dad...I can't promise anything...but I'll try." I told him as I winced. Dad wouldn't be happy with that answer, but it was the best I could give. If Loki started hurting innocent people, or my Duties called me I was confronting him.
I didn't care what happened.
"I don't suppose I'll be able to change your mind?" Dad asked with a note of desperation, but also of defeat. He already knew what my answer was going to be.
"Sorry, Dad…" I shrugged and jumped to another camera as Loki entered its range.
"You're so stubborn." Dad sighs and I chuckled.
"Well, we know who I get it from!" I snickered as I saw Dad scowling in my mind's eye.
"Oh shush, I don't need you channeling Pepper." Dad said with a scowl and I froze.
"Ewe, I don't want to channel Pepper!" I exclaimed and shuttered. That just wasn't right.
"Good...I'm over the Atlantic now, my ETA is twenty minutes and counting."
My eyes narrowed as I watched as Loki sprang into action and grabbed a random man at the party and slammed him down on a marble centerpiece.
Suddenly Loki pulled out a horrid looking device and plunged it into the dude's eye.
"Damn!" I exclaimed and slammed my hand down on the keyboard.
Suddenly another worm pulled up security camera footage showed Barton breaking into a research facility.
Suddenly my Duties flared causing a blinding surge of pain to fly up my insides. I bit my lip and threw the keyboard across the room.
"Double Damn!" I screamed and my sparks surged around me causing the computer to flicker and die with a burst of smoke.
"Penny? Penny what's wrong?" Dad's voice called out in worry through the com.
I took a deep breath as the pain passed. I needed to get to Loki now.
"Loki...getting out of hand...meet you there." U managed to say before my world erupted in pain once again.
"Penny?! Penny?! Answer me are you OK?!" Dad called but I ignored him for my Sparks were already swirling around me.
My Duties were calling; and I would be damned if I wasn't answering.
Hey everyone I'm really sorry for how long this took, school work sucks. And on top of that I now have a laptop curfew on school nights.
Thanks to everyone, R&R
