I awoke to two voices arguing, in my groggy state I could not make out the owners but I was still disheartened that my sanctuary was discovered so soon. Not opening my eyes I tried to listen in to their conversation, "She's a liability" I heard one voice say. "I am sure there is a perfectly good explanation to this," said the other. "Since when were you so quick to defend someone" the first person responded. I realised that these voices belonged to Locus and Felix and they were talking about me. "Well lets hear this explanation then." Locus said before I felt a hard hit against my armoured shoulder followed by a loud "Wake up!"
Instantly I opened my eyes and observed my surroundings, I was in a small grey room, the only furniture was a metal table and a metal chair that I was sitting on. Locus and Felix were both on the opposite side of the table watching me. What happened to the garden? Did they bring me here after they found me asleep? "Can I help you sirs?" I asked calmly, Felix shook his head.
"Do you think this is a joke?" Locus snapped. "E- excuse me?" I stammered was Locus really this annoyed that I slept? "Do you have any idea how much damage you caused?" Damage? "This could set us back months!"
I looked at him with a confused expression, "I was asleep, how could I cause any damage?" Even with his armour on he looked pissed off, Felix just seemed disappointed as he stood in the corner.
"Private." He said slowly in his usual deep, menacing voice. "Are you actively trying to piss me off? If word of this gets to Control, there is no doubt that he will order your execution." I look at both of my commanders with wide eyes, they were serious. Had I actually done something without my knowledge.
"Sir, what exactly happened?" I needed to tread lightly, I am pretty sure that handgun he has holstered is loaded.
He slammed a fist onto the table as Felix walked towards me holding a tablet with a video playing. Locus raised his voice, "You destroyed an entire shipment of alien weapons!" Was he serious? There is no way I could do that without knowing.
I turned to look at the screen the orange and black merc was holding. On it I could see one of our soldiers without a helmet in the vehicle bay. I looked closer even though it was from behind I could recognise my long hair, she- I walked next to a large truck holding weapons to be delivered to our research team. I then took out my magnum and fired four shots into the fuel tank, I started backing away but an explosion erupted from the truck knocking me back and destroying the camera.
Did this really happen, maybe the explosion caused me to lose memory? Yeah, that must be it. I was interrupted from my thoughts by Locus again, "Felix also told me about a conversation you both had not long ago. That you were having doubts about the mission and refusing to use the weaponry provided. Like it or not Private Moon, you will use these new weapons, they have an advantage over all these standard UNSC weaponry. If we are to remain undetected during this operation then we have to ensure we leave no evidence."
They will force me to use these monstrous guns? The ones that cause the wounded to scream in pain? I start to shake at the thought. Felix speaks up "Who's to say this wasn't an accident?" Locus looks at him, "What if that footage just disappeared and the explosion was caused by one of the weapons malfunctioning. And our beloved sniper voluntarily spent a few nights in the brig." I was catching on to what he was saying but I am not sure Locus will be happy about it.
"Yes sir, please allow me to spend some time in the brig." Locus took glances between us before nodding.
"We were never here and I expect you to be in brig within the hour" I nodded and started to leave, closing the door behind me. I walked down the futuristic corridors of our base, coloured lights seemed to integrate with the walls and floor.
I started to try and jog my memory as I walked to the brig. The last thing I remember before falling asleep was finding that garden in the base. I stopped. A garden… in a military base, in the middle of a mountain. I must be hallucinating, there is no way a garden is in the middle of this base. I hold my head in my hands as I keep walking.
How is it possible I could do all that without knowing? Why would I do something like that? I don't agree with what they are doing but I don't want to be executed. If I mess with these guys I know nothing good will come of it, even so..
I stop as I reach the brig, I could see rows of empty cells filling a hallway, there was a small room at the end designed for the control of all the cell doors. I walked up to the room and saw an officer out of uniform sat in there, he obviously overweight, leaning back eating a doughnut, it is a miracle the chair doesn't break.
Seeing me he sits up straight and presses an intercom button, "Can I help you?" he says sarcastically.
I narrow my eyes, I'd like to spend some time in the brig. He laughs loudly almost falling off his chair. "Seriously?" I nod. "Okay fuck it, I don't care just keep it down." He pushes a few buttons causing a cell door to open and I silently walk in letting it close behind me. "Hey, Missy!" I hear his voice yell over the intercom, "This job is bitchin good, so don't fuck it up for me!"
I sigh and sit on the bed in my cell, this is what it has come to. I have to lock myself up, my own commanders don't trust me, hell, even I don't trust myself. I look up and see Felix walking in. "Moon!" He shouts I stand up quickly, watching him stomp towards me. "Do you have any idea what I just had to do to make sure you don't get shot? Why the fuck would you do that Moon?"
"Sir, I have no recollection of what happened. I don't remember doing it nor why I would do it." I try to convince him with everything I have.
"You're losing it moon, take some time off, relax, I can't keep doing this for you. You need to get your shit together, or else you know what will happen." He turns around and leaves me to my thoughts, I watch him slowly leave the room. Why can't I remember?
