Hey Guys. I know that it's late, but I really wanted to get this chapter out tonight, like I promised! I'm sorry that it's taken me so long to update typically but I am sticking to this timeline goal that I set for myself. And I going to stick with it for the sequel as well. I am, however, sorry that it is coming in late. I didn't plan on posting it at almost eleven, but I was at work, and didn't get out until ten thirty, so I had to wait. And I wanted to look it over once more before posting it, otherwise, I would've posted it before work. Anyways, hopefully you guys enjoy! As always, Read and Review!
Clare's POV
Being rushed to the police station in a police escort, wasn't exactly good for my nerves. They didn't tell us anything. Only what Adam said. They didn't tell us how they were going to take down Asher. All we knew was that it was happening tonight.
Adam, Eli and I shared one cruiser, and I sat in the middle. We weren't told anything and Adam didn't explain either. The car ride was long and silent. The only sounds were of passing cars, and the sound of the sirens. When we arrived at the station, all of our families were there.
They moved all of us into a conference room, adjacent to all of the police desks and everything. We all went willingly, except for Adam's parents, mainly his mom. From what I knew, she was some part of the legal system. I didn't really know what she did for a living but I do know that she was very pushy. She would do anything to find answers. So she didn't come into the conference room with us.
She stayed out in the main room while the officers in the station were having some sort of meeting. Adam's dad stayed with her. I sat with Adam on a couch, not knowing what to do with my family in the room. They stayed on the other side of the room on a couch, not looking at me, while Jake sat about half way between us at the conference table.
Eli was sitting in a chair in front of Adam and I. He was watching what was going on, in the police station, through the windows. His parents sat next to him, but they weren't really speaking. Then again, no one was. We were all stunned. Waiting. Watching. We sat there for awhile without answers. I don't even know how long. Adam's parents stayed out there talking to the officers and the captain, and watching as the police talked to each other.
They were probably setting up a game plan of some sort. Some way to take down Asher with the least injuries. We were just not aloud to listen in. The only reason that Adam's parents were, was because they were persistent.
Danny came into the room and looked at Eli.
"Eli, can you come out here for a moment?" He asked.
"What for?" Eli's dad asked.
"We just want his input on what he remembers when he drove the car to the hospital." Danny replied. "It'll help us with our plan."
Eli nodded before glancing at us, and following Danny into the main room. I watched as he sat down with the Chief and a couple other officers, Danny included. They talked for awhile, while writing things down on paper.
Eventually, Adam was called into the room. He sat beside Eli and I was forced to watch and wonder what was going on. No one told us anything, and no one spoke in the room. Everyone was staring at one thing or another. Eventually, Adam came back into the room, but Eli remained.
"What's going on?" I asked, as Adam sat down beside me again.
"They just wanted what I remembered about our getaway. And what I remembered about the layout of the place." He shrugged, leaning back against the couch.
"Why aren't they questioning me?" I asked.
"Maybe because Eli and I were there longer and you were also unconscious during the getaway. So that wouldn't help either." He suggested.
"That's true." I sighed. "I just wish they would tell us something."
A few minutes later, the Chief nodded at Eli and stood up. He began pointing and officers decided to go in different directions. They were obviously preparing for the takedown. Eli sat there talking to the other officers for a few moments more before standing up and walking back into the room. He sat down in the chair, before turning towards us.
"They're going now." He stated, putting his arms on his knees and looking at his hands.
"Do you think they could do it?" Adam asked. "Could they really take down Asher?"
"I have my doubts because I've known Asher for so long, but honestly, I think they could. I've told them everything I know, and so have you. I worked with them on a plan and I think it could work. Granted my last true attempt didn't go well, but this one—" He cut off, thinking about something. "This one could work."
"What do you mean your last attempt? Your last attempt you actually got out. So you didn't fail." I asked confused.
"Actually." He looked up, and looked nervous all of a sudden. "That was—" He paused, grasping for words.
"That was different because we got lucky. We did it all spontaneously. It was a spur of the moment thing. The last time, years ago, was planned out and it didn't work so well." Adam continued.
I nodded, realizing that it made sense.
We went silent as we watched the officers gather and leave. All but a few left, and we knew now that it was a waiting game. We would get no answers until they returned. Over two hours passed, and we hadn't heard anything. No police officers returned, and no news from any of the ones that remained here.
Adam's parents eventually came to sit in here, but they didn't talk with anyone in particular. Eli's and Adam's parents talked for a bit, but that died out because we were all anxious. Adam and Eli left once to go get sodas, but they ended up not finding a machine that was working apparently.
"I'm going to go walk around. I can't just keep sitting here." I stated, standing up.
"Do you want me to come with you?" Eli asked.
"No. It's okay." I sighed. "I think I'm just going to go to the bathroom anyways."
Eli nodded, and I headed to the door.
"Clare. I don't think that's a good idea. We are supposed to stay here." My mom piped up.
"Good thing I didn't ask for your opinion." I retorted, before walking out of the room. I couldn't believe she had the audacity to say something like that to me. I was only going to the bathroom.
I headed to the bathroom, and didn't really pass anyone on the way. The only people really in the station were the police officers sitting at their desks, answering phones and doing paperwork. The bathroom was empty and quiet, and it wasn't until I was on my way back that I heard noise.
I had just entered the main area of the police station, when I heard noise coming from outside. The doors swung open, in walked a bunch of police officers, while they brought in guy after guy that were handcuffed. Most I didn't recognize, but a few I did. They had been there, working for Asher.
One by one they were dragged passed me down the hallway. When I was on my way to the bathroom, I noticed that there was a holding cell area down there. That was most likely where they were taking them all.
I stood there watching, not sure if I should go back into the conference room or not. Going back would mean I would pass by everyone and I would watch through the windows, but I was also curious. I wanted to know who they caught. And who they didn't.
Before I could let my better judgment get the best of me, and head back into the room, I saw who I was looking for. Asher. He seemed calm. For the most part. He seemed content with being taken into custody. And I wouldn't be surprised if he went willingly either. Because he just seemed that calm.
They sat him in a chair, and two guards stood behind him while he sat there. Not really caring. A few moments later, Fitz came through the door, and he didn't seem as calm. He fighting against the guards a little, making it difficult for the guards to walk him into the station. When he spotted me however, he went ballistic.
"I'm going to fucking kill you! I swear fucking god, I'll get out of here. And when I do you will be dead!" He growled at me. I took a step back, hitting the wall. I didn't expect that he would threaten me like that. Especially after how calm Asher was.
I felt a hand on my shoulder, and I glanced back to see it was Eli. I turned back, to see two officers dragging Fitz out of the room and down the hall.
"Good riddance I say." Adam spoke up.
I didn't say anything though, because I noticed that the police had stopped coming through the doors.
"Where's K.C.?" I asked.
"I don't know. Maybe you missed him coming in?" Adam asked.
"No. I didn't. I was here when they first started bring people in." I explained.
"I don't know then." Adam replied.
"Don't worry." Eli said, interlocking his fingers with mine. "We'll go find out."
I walked over to Danny, and Eli and Adam followed. He looked up when we stopped in front of him, and it was a little bit closer to Asher than I would've liked. Luckily they were now beginning to move him down the hallway as well. He was out of eye sight in seconds.
"What's up?" He asked, looking at me.
"I was wondering what happened to K.C.?" I asked.
"Who?" He replied, confused.
"K.C.? K.C. Guthrie. He's my ex? And he worked for Asher?" I continued.
"Chief." Danny called, and within a second he was standing there next to Danny.
"What is it?" He asked.
"Was there a K.C. Guthrie found tonight?" Danny asked.
"No." The Chief stated. The pit in my stomach grew. I felt like I couldn't breathe. K.C. was still out there. And he was free. He could still come after us.
"Are you sure, Clare?" Danny asked. "Are you sure he was working there?"
"Yes." I exclaimed. "Of course, I'm sure. He's the one that killed Alli! Why would I lie about something like that?"
"Damn." The Chief muttered, before walking away. He walked over and started talking with some other officers, completely forgetting we existed.
"Don't worry, Clare. We will find him." Danny stated.
"I hope so." I sighed. This couldn't be happening. K.C. couldn't be free. This just wasn't happening.
"Clare? Let's go sit down." Eli suggested, directing me back to the room. He directed me back into my original spot on the couch, and I put my face into my hands. I had a hard time believing that any of this was real. Eli began rubbing my back, before he began speaking. "It'll be okay, Clare. He won't be able to get to you. And he wouldn't want to try. I guarantee he won't bother you."
I leaned into him, and he wrapped his arm around me.
"For a split second, I thought it was all over. I thought it was truly over." I exhaled shakily.
"I know, Clare." He agreed. "I thought so too."
We sat like that, for a while, waiting. Eventually Danny came back.
"We will escort you back to your hotels, and you will have police protection tonight. According to K.C.'s family, he is out of state for some tournament. So we will begin the process of tracking him down, there." Danny stated. "You can gather your things and head out at any time. Have a good night."
"Do you want to go home with your family?" Eli asked me, as we all stood up.
"No." I replied immediately. "I don't think they'd want me to come home anyways."
"I can't speak for them, but I know that I wouldn't mind having you around." Jake stated, walking up to us. "But I can understand your hesitation. I'll see you tomorrow, okay?" He asked.
"Sounds good." I replied. We hugged, before he walked over to our parents and began talking with them.
"Ready to go?" Eli asked, wrapping his arm around me again.
"Definitely." I sighed. It had been a long day. Having a good night sleep with Eli by my side was definitely needed.
