#23… Hockey stick - I have used it for field hockey, but I am sure you can use it on ice as well.
#62… Discipline - if someone is getting out of line, you use this and they will straighten up their act.
#77… Help straighten the star on top of the Christmas tree – for those that have a tree, if it is crooked, a shinai can be used to straighten it.
"How long ago that now? Ten years?" Hunny glanced to his cousin as he asked his question.
Shaking his head, Mori answered, "No, only seven. Haruhi was pregnant with Akio at the time."
"Oh that's right!" Came the giggled response.
"What's right?" Akio raised his voice in inquiry. At only six years old, he was the typical curious little boy, but this whole conversation made zero sense to him. All he did was come out into the living room to tell on his little sister...she broke his hockey stick. Then again, maybe, just maybe, he had something to do with it as well considering he let her play with it. Of course he didn't think she could do much as a baby. Then again, after she was done playing with it, he should have picked it up and hadn't, then he tripped over it and broke it; but it was still her fault for leaving it where she did. His plan had been to come in and tell his dad, and when he did, he found his Uncle Hunny sitting there too. The only thing he said was, "Father, my hockey stick got broke." After that, this cryptic conversation happened and he couldn't seem to follow what they were talking about.
"It was definitely an interesting Christmas that year. Tama-Chan swore he was an ice skating expert, but he fell more than anyone else," Hunny snickered.
"He tried to get Haruhi onto the ice, but she refused and I had to force him to get away from her."
"It's not like it took much. One little push and he was on the other side of the pond with zero effort."
Akio was at the end of his tether, "What are you talking about?" His breath was coming out in hard pants and his temper was about to be let loose.
"You are your mom's son," Hunny commented, a smile upon his face.
"Mitsukuni," Mori warned before turning to his son and pulling him onto his lap, "How did your hockey stick get broken? Did you leave it on the floor again?"
"Nnnnoooooo…." The little one began to answer, and then dropped his head and stared at his own lap, "Maybe."
"Then you can use your shinai until you learn discipline and to take care of your things better."
"What? You can't use a shinai to play hockey!"
Laughing, Hunny corrected him, "Oh but you really can. Seven years ago, we went to Hokkaido for Christmas and had a hockey game on the little pond behind my family's vacation home."
"What? Really?"
Flashback…
Tamaki had decided their little group, or family if you will, needed to be surrounded by snow for the Christmas holiday, and somehow he managed to convince the heads of each family that a trip to Hokkaido would be beneficial for everyone. Relaxing, he said. The other hosts didn't know how he had done it, and they probably didn't really want to know, but that holiday, the five families moved north and would stay until after the New Year. He took away the argument that his friends had to spend the holidays with their actual family and away from him and the group.
It was on one of the days they were vacationing there, two days before Christmas to be exact (the day after they arrived), that he felt the hosts should spend the afternoon together, eating, making merry, and skating on the small pond behind the Haninozuka home. He was a self-proclaimed expert at the sport and wanted to show off his prowess. Thus they met for and early lunch and once complete, ran out back to show off their skills; everyone but the lone female host. Everyone wanted Haruhi to join them, but since she was pregnant at the time, no one wanted to see her take a chance at falling. A clumsy pregnant woman and ice did not mix very well. The only person who still tried to pressure her to try her hand on the slippery surface was Tamaki, but Mori took care of him by pushing him away from his wife. One little push and Tamaki found himself gliding backwards then falling on the opposite bank.
"Let's play hockey!" Satoshi excitedly suggested.
"I guess we do have an even number of people, and Haruhi can be the one to keep score," Chika agreed.
Slowly and carefully getting to his feet, Tamaki asked, "Why are you leaving my little girl out of it?"
"Haruhi is pregnant. So, she will not be skating. How will we break-up the teams?" Mori answered.
Kyoya pulled out his black book from nowhere and began reading, "In order to make the teams as balanced as possible, I recommend splitting up the teams as such: Mori, Yasuchika, Kaoru, and myself – team one, Satoshi, Hunny, Hikaru, and Tamaki – team two. Any questions?"
"Why like that Kyo-Chan?" Hunny inquired.
He pushed his glasses up and with a smirk, explained, "Mori-senpai and Satoshi are two of the bigger and more physical players here. Hunny-senpai and Yasuchika are also physical albeit smaller in stature. Kaoru is the more laidback twin and would do better with someone with a short temper, but it would not be fair to keep him on the same team as his brother due to tricks the twins would most likely play. Hikaru has a shorter temper and would do better with someone who knows how to control a hothead. Tamaki would get along better with Hunny-senpai since he constantly tries to make passes at Haruhi, which means there is a higher likelihood that Mori-senpai would want to kill him. This leaves myself as the odd man out, and I will fill in the extra spot on the other team."
Sweat dropping, Hikaru said with a nervous chuckle, "It looks like you have given this a lot of thought, senpai."
"Of course. I figured it would be a possibility ever since the list was published; therefore, I calculated the percentages and figured out the best teams.
Everyone around him face palmed. They should have known the Shadow King would have done something like this.
After a short meeting, the teams got ready to play. Mori and Satoshi stood at goal, and since no one had hockey sticks, everyone used shinais. The action was nonstop as the men skated back and forth. When it started to snow again and the temperatures started to drop, the score was tied 1-1. Last pass. Hunny got the puck (which was just a plastic saucer plate they had found and decided it would be hard to destroy). He broke away from the other players, skating hard and towards his cousin. He would get this goal. Quick stop, shoot, and… INTERCEPTED! Mori had caught it passed it to Chika. The younger Haninozuka skated towards the other goal and just before his brother caught up to him, he leaped into the air, did a flip, effectively dodging his sibling's attack. Landing on his feet, he shot the puck and… SCORE! Satoshi had been so focused on the other players coming towards him and his best friend flying through the air, he wound up protecting his goal a split second too late.
"HARUHI! They cheated. Daddy's team lost because…" Tamaki grabbed her and carried her onto the ice. This was probably the first and only time she did not struggle when he held her and yet, he hit a bump and started fall. If Mori had not caught her, pulling her out of the blonde's arms, she would have fallen with him. Tamaki on the other hand, well, Mori let him fall face first on the ice.
Approaching his friend, Kyoya took aim, pulled back both arms, and fired. Tamaki's butt had been hovering in the air after this collapse offering the perfect target, and the Shadow King could not resist using his shinai to give the princely type a spanking for endangering their friend.
"Mommy! Why did you do that?"
"Were you supposed to bring Haruhi out onto the ice?"
"No, but…"
"No buts. You did something you were not supposed to do given her delicate condition, and you had to be punished for it. Will you do something so stupid again?"
"No," the blond whimpered.
"Then my work here is done." Addressing the crowd, Kyoya suggested, "Shall we adjourn indoors to warm up?"
The hosts agreed and everyone took off their skates, putting their shoes back on before following their unofficial leader into the house.
End flashback…
"So you see Akio-Chan, you can use a shinai in place of a hockey stick," Hunny finished his story.
Eyes wide, the little boy turned to his father, "You won, and you saved me and mommy?"
Mori hadn't thought of it like that before, but since Haruhi was pregnant with their son at the time, it was true, "I did. I will always be there for you and your mother."
"Uncle Mitsu, you lost?"
"I did, but we all had fun," Hunny replied his smile growing.
Before anything else could be said, Haruhi came into the room and interrupted everyone, "If you guys aren't doing anything, can you help me decorate the tree? It's proving to be rather difficult to keep an eye on Hitomi and work on the tree at the same time."
Getting up, Mori walked over to his wife and kissed the top of her head, "I thought we were going to do that later."
"We were, but I started to sort through the boxes to see what we had and what Akio hadn't broken last year, and then wanted to put the lights on, but I realized I couldn't do it without help."
Mori glanced over his shoulder and asked, "Mitsukuni, will you help?"
The shorter man jumped up and proclaimed, "Sure! Come on Akio-Chan, let's help your mom with the tree!"
Once the tree was trimmed to Haruhi's satisfaction, the boxes were moved to a corner for one of the servants to put in storage until they were needed again. Eyeing the top of the tree, the mother of two decided the star was off kilter ever so slightly, "Akio, where's your shinai?"
"In my room."
"Go get it for me real quick."
Her son didn't ask questions, he just did what he was told. Running to his room, he grabbed the bamboo sword and ran back as swiftly as possible, handing it over to his mom. And then he watched her to something he never thought he would see, she straightened the star using his sword. "Mommy? Why didn't you have dad do that?"
"He's busy talking to Mitsukuni about something, so I thought I would do it myself. See all straight now."
"Mommy?"
"Hmm?" Haruhi turned to look at her son waiting for him to ask his question.
"Is it true you can play hockey with a shinai?"
"You can. Your dad and uncles all did, and I have the pictures to prove it. Do you want to see?"
"YES!"
"Then let's grab your sister and go find my scrapbook," Haruhi grinned widely. Her son would eventually learn that nothing was normal in this family, not when the hosts were part of it.
