Rena refused to speak to Aisha. In fact, she wouldn't even look at her. She wasn't as hurt as she was worried for her friend. The maids had told her that Rena hasn't slept in days. But something else was also lurking in the back of her mind.
Elsword.
He never showed up again after Rena attacked him. Aisha wasn't just mad at him, she was absolutely livid. She cursed herself for letting him play with her feelings like that. He was right. They will meet again on the battlefield.
And she will kill him with her own hands.
Sander was so annoyingly hot. The dry air made her skin even drier. They had been here for a week and her skin was more cracked than the ground. Sander was also so sandy. It was probably a given, but no matter how much Eve washed, she could never get all the sand out of her hair. Which, also, had grown a good bit since Chung kidnapped her in the middle of the night.
Eve had made friends with some of the children in the village and she would spend most of her time playing with them while Chung monitored from a safe distance. Occasionally, she would look over at him and notice how his features had softened and how he interacted with the villagers. He was slowly letting his guard down and that's exactly what she needed him to do.
One of the children, a girl named Areha, tapped her on the shoulder.
Eve turned.
"May we braid your hair, Miss Eve?" she asked.
"I don't see why not," Eve smiled.
They all beamed and immediately began working on her hair.
Eve pulled her knees up to her chest and began to daydream. Two villagers carrying a giant stone pillar walked by her.
"Excuse us, little lass and the children," one grunted and gave them a quick grin.
"What happened?" Eve asked.
"One of our pillars fell, knocked over by the wind. It was bound to happen. This thing is older than me," he let out a booming laugh.
"Do you need help, Rafael?" Chung asked, walking up to them.
"That'd be great, Lacher! Thanks. Dante here is almost as ancient as this pillar. I can hear his bones rattle when he walks so I don't want him to hurt himself," Rafael laughed again.
Dante gave him a glare before laughing as well. Chung took the other end of the pillar for Dante and he and Rafael carried it away.
Lacher. That name again.
Lu hated traveling. She had terrible motion sickness.
"So Raven has finally gone off the deep end, huh?" she asked when they arrived in Velder, trying to distract herself from her motion sickness by talking.
"You could say that," Rena said.
"Poor Eve," Lu said, "I hope she's okay. Do you know where she is right now?"
"Sander," Rena said, "A Night Watcher who was posing as a Caluso Tribe villager sent word a few days ago."
"So she's not with Raven?"
"No. Raven thought he would send us on a wild goose chase, but he underestimated me. We're heading straight to Sander when the troops are ready."
"What about Raven, then?"
"That's where you two come in."
"Why does everyone call you Lacher?" Eve asked when they both were inside their hut.
The villagers all were required to "retire" for the night at a certain time. Chung and Eve shared a room because he knew she would run away in the middle of the night. He was not wrong.
"That doesn't concern you," he answered.
"But I want to know. Is it an old nickname? Is Chung not your real name?" she pushed on.
"After you burned Hamel to the ground, this village took me in and raised me. I was called Lacher then," Chung said bitterly.
Eve immediately quieted down and bit her lip.
"I changed my name to Chung and I trained myself to kill, hoping one day I could put a bullet through your head myself. Now look where we are," he said, turning to look at her.
"Do you want to kill me right now?" she whispered.
"Yes."
"Then do it."
They both looked at each other. No one moved.
"Why aren't you doing anything?" she finally said.
"Because I'm waiting."
"For what?"
"For you to remember."
Raven was tired of waiting. Rena was biding her time despite Eve being in his hands. She's planning something. He was getting anxious. He wanted to know what she was doing.
He started the mind game first and now it was her turn. And she was taking her sweet, sweet time.
That woman is manipulative and conniving. I'm one step ahead of her but she'll know soon. I must ensure my victory.
"Elsword," Raven called.
"That's my name," Elsword appeared in a flash of red. "What do you want?"
"Find him," Raven ordered, ignoring the redhead's annoying way of speaking.
It was obvious Elsword knew who he was talking about but he made it his life goal to make annoy Raven. "Who?"
He grit his teeth. "Him."
"Sir, please stop playing the pronoun game and just tell me."
"Add. Find him and get him over here."
Author's Note: Really freaking short chapter, I know! I'm so sorry but life is just getting in the way of everything. School and marching band being mostly the reason.
