A/N: Thank you everyone for being patient with me. Starting today I am once again on my normal writing schedule. I finished my novel and dropped it off with my proofreader/editor today. Fingers crossed he likes it and then I will do something I have been dreaming about for a long time, publishing! So excited!
This chapter was inspired by a request by LucyXHeartifiliaXFan. You wanted to see New Year's, here you go. Shortie87 requested these numbers. Enjoy! I know that these don't look like they will make any sense together, but it's the Host Club…it will eventually. LOL.
#58… Tie a rope and use as a grappling hook – throw it on the roof and you can scale walls.
#81… Ring doorbell – If you have it, use it.
#82… Break lock on an old truck – if you can't open a trunk due to an old lock, a well-placed hit with a shinai should get rid of the problem for you.
The Host Club and their families had been in Hokkaido for a little over a week now and they had already experienced a hockey game without hockey sticks, Tamaki able to grow mushrooms in the cold snow, and the twins setting Tamaki's pants on fire. They had originally tried to play a prank on Kyoya, but one quirky brow and glint of light flashing on the Shadow King's glasses, and the twins immediately found another victim. Unfortunately, the closest person to them at the time had been Tamaki. Ergo, his pants caught on fire, he ran out of the house, and sat in the frigid wet snow sighing in relief. After that, Hikaru and Kaoru decided they would no longer attempt to prank Kyoya again; at least not in the foreseeable future (but I digress, dear reader. This has nothing to do with the current topic of conversation, but if you wanted to know, Tamaki's but, although red, healed just fine. He just had to sit down gently for a couple weeks).
As it happened, on New Year's Eve that year, the Suoh family was hosting a party for all of the nearby elite families. Of course Tamaki wanted to invite the commoners that were in the surrounding area as well, but his father put a stop to that before the young blond could run with his idea; however, Ranka received an invitation, much to Tamaki's chagrin. He just could not understand why Haruhi's father didn't like him.
It had been decided a couple days before, the same day Tamaki's ass was set ablaze, that the hosts would arrive early and keep Tamaki calm and busy before the party (dear reader, his mother and father decided this. They feared his hyperness and need to be involved in everything commoner would actually hinder the efforts of the servants to get everything ready). While the party did not start until 7:00pm that night, the hosts minus the twins, arrived at the Suoh vacation home at noon. Using this shinai, Satoshi rang the doorbell.
"Why did you even bring that with you?" Haruhi deadpanned.
"Because around certain people, you never know when it might come in handy," Satoshi answered seriously.
Nodding in agreement, Chika concurred with his cousin, "You can say that again."
"Because around certain people… OW!" The second Morinozuka son grabbed his head and rubbed the now tender spot. "What'd you do that for Yasuchika?"
"It was rhetorical," he rolled his eyes handing his best friend back the shinai he had taken to use as a weapon against him.
Before an argument could begin, Tamaki opened the door, his excitement about the upcoming party palpable. It could have been the twinkling stars in his eyes, or the way was practically bouncing even as he stood in one place, or the fact he answered the door himself that clued them in; and if they missed those hints, then the way he gushed when he answered the door would have sealed the deal, "Oh everyone has arrived! Can you feel it? Tonight is going to be wondrous, stupendous, brilliant, and magical!"
Six sweat drops (yes, dear reader, even Kyoya). While they expected their former president to be a little more in the party spirit than they were, that was a given based on his personality, they did not expect to run into this…this… They had no words for this.
"Oh boo. Where are Hikaru and Kaoru? I thought they would be with you!"
Five pair of eyes turned towards Kyoya to see if he could give them a clue as to what had happened to Tamaki. Was he drunk? Had aliens taken over his brain?
Pushing up his glasses, the Shadow King could feel the eyes on him and shook his head, "I honestly don't know."
If Kyoya didn't know, did this mean the world was falling apart? Five pairs of eyes looked to the heavens to see if the sky was falling.
"Tamaki, have you been drinking?" Kyoya finally asked his best friend. He took a step forward to sniff the other man's breath, and then promptly handed him a breath mint.
"You mean he really has been drinking, Kyo-Chan?" Hunny questioned, tears in his eyes. If it was true, he was very disappointed in the younger man.
Shaking his head, the vice president answered, "No, his breath isn't fresh though and rather than subject us to his bad breath, I decided he needed a mint."
"Sorry! I was sampling some of the food the cook is preparing," Tamaki blushed red popping the mint into his mouth.
Just then a loud crash was heard coming from the side of the house. It sounded as if someone had gone bowling with the garbage bins; either that or someone was trying to break into the house. Everyone except Mori and Haruhi took off immediately. He stopped her from following and said, "Stay here where it's safe until we know what it is. I don't want you or the baby in danger." Receiving her nod, he quickly followed the others and found two redheads lying on their backs on top of a pile of garbage bins and garbage. On top of them was rope and broken pieces of bamboo. What happened?
"MOMMY! Our sons are dead!" Tamaki screamed.
"UHHHHH. We're not dead, baka Tono!" Hikaru groaned.
Kaoru winced when he tried to move and moaned, "Nope. Still alive."
Kyoya was almost afraid to ask, but he did anyway, "What were you two attempting to do? Dumpster diving?"
"NO! UGH!" The twins denied at the same time and groaned again.
"Then what?"
"This is all Satoshi's fault!" Hikaru exclaimed.
"My fault?" The man in question balked. How could it be his fault if he was nowhere near them and did not even know they were at the house?
Gently nodding, Kaoru said, "Your fault. It doesn't work and you said it would."
He still had no clue what they were talking about. "What exactly did you two do?" Satoshi questioned.
"Grappling hook," Hikaru told him.
"We threw it on the roof, started to climb, and then fell when the shinai broke," Kaoru recounted.
Satoshi face palmed and shook his head, "Not my fault then. You two were stupid enough to try something like that."
"Of course! It was on the list," Hikaru grumbled.
"Hey, can someone help us up?" Kaoru groaned.
Hunny and Chika assisted the twins to their feet, while Mori called Haruhi over. No one, other than the twins, thought it was Satoshi's fault.
"Satoshi! Why did you put it on the list if it didn't work! Our sons could have been seriously hurt!" Tamaki yelled (Ok dear reader, no one except the twins and Tamaki).
Rolling his eyes, Satoshi shook his head at their idiocy, "First of all, Taka-bro is the one who showed that trick to me when I was five and weighed a lot less than you do now. It works, but you're too heavy. Secondly, who in their right minds would have actually tried something like that?"
"You really need to ask?" The sarcasm in Haruhi's voice made Satoshi blush for even asking that question.
"You're right."
"While I don't normally mind discussing the various items on the list with others, and even experimenting with some of them myself, I believe it would be in our best interest to allow these two to go inside and get cleaned up. They reek and need a shower and change of clothes," Kyoya interrupted.
In full agreement, the twins were pushed towards the front door and then marched up the stairs. Once inside, it was easy to smell the odor of garbage.
The twins cleaned up and Tamaki given a Benadryl to help him calm down (dear reader, I must give this disclaimer. While it is not all right to medicate children with Benadryl to get their hyper activity to decrease, it is okay for Tamaki because the dark cloud around Kyoya was growing and it was feared he would murder the blond if Tamaki did not chill out), it was decided the hosts would explore the old house that had not seen an occupant for at least a decade. Tamaki had no clue what was in the house because he had never been in it before this year.
Searching behind various doors, the twins found a staircase, "Hey! Where does this go?"
"It would appear up," Chika commented snidely.
"Let's go! Let's go!" Tamaki ran up before anyone could stop him (dear reader, it did calm him down some, but he is still Tamaki. He's more curious than a five year old).
The others followed him upstairs and came into a dusty room full of boxes, trunks, and junk. In other words, they found an old attic. They were like kids in a candy store, or at least some of them were (I know dear reader, at most five of them were. Can you guess who?). Tamaki, Hikaru, Kaoru, Hunny, and Satoshi started looking through the various items they found, while Mori stuck close to Haruhi, Chika stayed on her other side, and Kyoya took notes on what everyone found or what they were doing after pulling his black book out of nowhere yet again. Well, if nothing else, it would keep a certain blond out of trouble until it was time to get ready for the party. It looked like the twins would be taking another shower today.
Eventually, Tamaki found an old trunk that he couldn't open. He tried to pull the lock that kept it closed, but it would not budge. He tried to kick it, and still nothing. His curiosity growing by the second, he had to know what was in this trunk. It was a necessity! "Mommy, it won't open!" He whined.
"What do you expect me to do about it…daddy?" Kyoya retorted and pushed his glasses up.
"Open it. You know how to pick locks, don't you?"
"No."
"But mommy."
"No."
A wide grin on his face, Satoshi volunteered, "I can open it senpai. Just stand back."
Running to the other side of the room, Tamaki ducked behind Kyoya. He didn't know what the younger man had up his sleeve, but lately he was getting the brunt of the injuries and he would prefer to keep out of harm's way today.
Satoshi lifted his shinai, hitting something behind him, and when he turned, he found Hikaru rubbing the top of his head, "Sorry, Hikaru-senpai." (Dear reader, he really wasn't, but it would be rude to say otherwise.) Lifting the shinai again, he swung it down hard and fast, hitting the lock and forcing it to pop open.
Tamaki rushed forward to pull the broken lock away and lifted the lid. Inside, he found old love letters and a jade green kimono. What was this stuff? Reading the name of the person the letters were addressed to, his eyes widened and he gasped. It was his grandmother, but how was that possible? This was not from his grandfather. What? How? When?
"Tamaki?" An older voice called out from behind Haruhi and Mori.
"Grandmother!" The blond jumped and the letters in his hand scattered across the floor.
The older woman scanned the area and saw exactly what her grandson had been up to. He had found out her secret. "What are you doing?"
"Well, we were just exploring and…and…"
"If I'm not mistaken, there was a lock on that trunk."
"There was? I…I…I…"
"Well, I suppose you may have questions now. You may ask."
"These are yours, right?"
"Correct."
"Who is this?"
"My first love. He was from a family of lower standing than my own and my family arranged the marriage to your grandfather against my will. After he died in the war, I readily married into the Suoh family."
This was news to everyone in the room. As cold as she had been to her grandson and even her own son, she understood how her son felt about Tamaki's mother. Then why had she acted like that?
"I know what you're thinking. I did what I felt was best for the family and have no regrets. Now if you will, please clean up this mess and then it will be time to get ready for the party. We cannot be tardy to a party we are hosting ourselves."
"Yes, grandmother. Grandmother?"
She had already started to descend the stairs and only paused in her stride without looking to where the blond stood, "Did you love him?"
Sighing, she finally answered, "With all my heart. Enough that I would have runaway with him." She stayed no longer and left the hosts to do as she had asked.
After that, Tamaki viewed his grandmother in a different light, with new eyes. When he was still in high school, they had forged a new bond, one that gave mutual respect to the other party, and now this, this shed a new understanding on his grandmother and the woman she once was. It had changed him a little. How sad it must have been to lose the one love of your life. His father had been lucky that he had found love and chosen to pursue it, then lost it, and then found it again. His grandmother had not been given that opportunity.
Later that night, as the countdown to the New Year's began, Tamaki stood close to his grandmother and kissed her cheek as the clock struck twelve.
