39. "Oh, by the way," Tom turns to face him as though he's just remembered something. "How's that girlfriend of yours? Are you serious about her?"
"Huh?"
"Is it serious?"
He isn't sure how to answer that question. It's not as though he's been with anyone other than Mai. He does love her, however cheesy that might sound, but he's not sure as to what constitutes as 'serious'. They've been dating since December, and it's almost April now, so it's been awhile since they started their relationship. He's not considering ending it in any case, and she seems happy. "Look, Mai is...well, I like her and all, but..." Letting out a sigh, he takes a long drag on his current cigarette. "I just don't want to suddenly snap one of these days and hurt her." While he knows he won't ever raise a hand to hurt Mai, he still doesn't know what could happen if he ever loses control. And he doesn't want to be one of those abusive assholes who snap at the slight provocation and beat the hell out of their wives or girlfriends.
Tom watches him in concern for a moment, then shrugs sympathetically. "I don't know what to tell you there, but with someone like Mai, isn't she worth the risk? Besides, I think if she was worried, you'd have lost her a long time ago. Personally, I think she's a great girl. Don't let her go, all right?"
