50. Despite everything, Mai is close to the Oriharas, something he has always blissfully ignored. He really doesn't give a damn who she's friends with. It may be a little weird his girlfriend lives with the one person he can't stand, but he can tolerate that. It isn't his place to be impeding Mai's decisions, and he consoles himself with the fact her living arrangements are just out of convenience for her, and nothing else.
But he never really noticed just how close she is to the flea. She practically treats him like family. Screw that, Mai treats everyone like family. She's been that way ever since he met her. She plays the role of the sensible, older sister, even though Izaya's two years her senior. For some reason, that doesn't piss him off as much as it should. Or maybe he just too shocked by what's happened.
As Mai dashes into the waiting room of Raira General Hospital, Izaya turns to face her, eyes oddly hollow and devoid of any emotion. She stops with ten paces between them, trailing her fingers awkwardly against the arm of an uncomfortable sofa. Neither of them speak, though Izaya does glare at him for a moment, then glances at Mai as though to ask why she brought him.
She takes a deep breath as though she's about to speak, but she can't seem to find any words.
So she sits down and wraps her arm around Mairu instead.
