Chapter 24

Red stays

Thanksgiving 1998

"Tur-key." Ceris' grabbed at the cooked bird. We cooked it for her. Mama and I. I gave her a piece and she chewed it or attempted to. She swallowed it whole. Red was getting glares, but she ignored them. My family couldn't disown me. It meant stopping the Wolf legacy. They're being total jerks. Cerise liked Red.

"This is uncomfortable." My brother was being climbed on by his kids. They laughed.

"Tur-keyyy!" Our baby whined.

"Here." Red gave her more. She cooed and fed herself as best she could.

"So, uh, Red, what exactly are your plans?" Mama asked. Everyone looked interested.

"I'm going to live with Bad Wolf and Cerise." She said, knowing the hearts of my family members weren't ready for this.

My uncles and brothers clutched their chests. My aunts were trying to slow their breathing. Ceris' giggled. Not the best time, Sweetie.

"For, for how long?" Mama was first to recover.

"I don't know. I'll still make my own money if that's what you're worried about." My wife knew that wasn't what this was about.

"That's good..." Mary nodded slowly.

No one asked anymore after that. I don't think they could handle it. Cerise ate happily. Then she took a nap. I wish I could nap. This was tiring. Mama was asking back-handed things and Red had to stay calm. It was all too much. I felt my head roll back and I snapped back awake. Then I closed my eyes too long and my neck went limp and I woke back up again. Eventually, I took my nap and Ceris' played with cousins while I was. They weren't too rough. Red woke me and we went to her family's lunch. They took the news the same-ish way. Her mom fainted.
