Chapter five: Noah

Lucy quietly snuck out of her "room" and over to the Grinch.

She poked him, then ducked. He snored in reply.

Grinning, she quietly and quickly tiptoed past his bed, towards the exit. She almost made it past him, until suddenly, he rolled over and started mummbling in his sleep.

"Pretty Princess..." Lucy heard him mutter. She giggled silently before tip toeing again. Lucy darted over to the sofa, where her dark blue cloak lay. Lucy grabbed it and slipped it on, before running to the door. She was about to open it, when she heard a whine.

Starlted, Lucy turned, and with relief saw it was just Max.

"Sh! Max! I'll be back, I promise!" Lucy whispered, petting him quickly. He whined again and looked up at her with puppy dog eyes.

"...Fine, you can come. But keep quiet!" Lucy muttered, opening the door as quietly as possible.

Cold winter air hit her face, making her blink fast and wrinkly her nose.

According to Grinch, she was supposed to have a upturned pointed nose by now, but she hasn't grown into it yet. Lucy knew she would still be some kind of freak down at Who Ville, but she kept her hood on and her head tilted down.

Yes, she was planning on going over to Who Vill. While she was in her room, she decided she wanted to look at the lights more closely, maybe even get some fresh Christmas cookies that haven't been tossed into the garbage.

"Come on Max. We only have a few hours until Grinch wakes up, and I don't wanna deal with him." Lucy said to Max as they decended down the mountain as fast as she could.

Max let out a bark, as if agreeing.

When they arrived to the edge of town, she smiled. The lights were so beautiful up close! There were many colors, even some white lights that looked like twinkling stars!

They made their way towards the town square, where Lucy remembered that some shops were open 24/7 for the Christmas season.

Lucy and Max were about to enter a shop, when suddenly someone bumped into Lucy.

"I'm sorry! Are you alright?" a voice asked her.

Lucy looked up slightly at the Who boy and blinked.

He was cute.

"N-No! I mean yes! I mean, it's not your fault, I'm fine..." Lucy stammered. The boy grinned.

He could couldn't see much of her face, only seeing her deep blue eyes and fair skin and dark hair. But even if he couldn't see her that clearly, she looked beautiful.

Those blue eyes looked strangely familiar to him though...

The Who boy held out his hand. "I'm Noah Whoran."

Lucy politly shook his hand. "Lucy."

"What, no last name?" he asked in a teasing voice. Lucy smiled a little. "I don't have a last name."

"Oh? Why not?" Noah asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Orphan. My, uh, brother, found me a long time ago and raised me." Lucy said.

"Oh. Well, sorry about that." Noah said, running a hand through his dark hair.

"It's fine. I, uh, just came to walk my dog and to buy some cookies." Lucy said, sidestepping him.

"Mind if I join you? I mean, I haven't seen you around town before, so I'm guessing you're new?" Noah asked.

"Sure, let's go with that." Lucy said. "Uh, as in, um, that sure, I don't mind." she stammered, thinking quickly to cover up her previous words.

Max whined, and Lucy looked down towards him.

"Just make it fast, I don't have much time." she added.

"Great! What were you going to buy?" Noah asked, following Lucy into the store.

"Cookies. Only a few." Lucy said, grabbing two cookies from a small basket. She went over to the register and handed over a few silver coins she had found in the garbage. Believe it or not, but some people actually throw away money, probably by accident.

"So, where do you live?" Noah asked, as they walked down through the town.

"Close by. You don't have to walk me, I can find my way back myself." Lucy stated. "Nice meeting you!"

"Wait! That's the edge of town you're going to." Noah said.

"Yeah, so?" Lucy asked, her sarcasm bubbling up to the surface.

"The only buildings there are all warehouses and stuff like that, including a hug garbage chute." Noah said. "There arent any houses over there."

"Run! I'll meet you at the chute!" Lucy whispered to Max. As Max ran off, she turned back to Noah.

"My brother works there...he told me to meet him there..." Lucy said, her mind racing.

"But those are closed until after Christmas." Noah pointed out. "What are you hiding, Lucy?"

"Um...LOOK A DISTRACTION!" Lucy yelled, pointing behind Noah's head.

"Lucy, I won't fall for that-" Noah didn't get to finish his sentece, because suddenly, a bunch of snow was thrown at his face.

As Noah wiped the cold substance from his face, Lucy started running.

"Lucy! LUCY!" Noah yelled, stumbling after her.

Lucy ignored his calling and kept running until she reached the large garbage chute, where Max was waiting, barking.

"Hurry Max, HURRY!" Lucy cried as she lifted the heavy door, opening the garbage chute. She punched the disposale butten.

"JUMP NOW MAX!" she yelled. Obaying, Max jumped and went through the chute. Lucy was just climbing onto the edge when someone grabbed her from behind.

"NO!" Lucy screamed, as she was thrown into the cold snow. Her hood fell, exposing her face more clearly.

"ARE YOU CRAZY?" Noah yelled, pushing her away from the garbage chute. "That chute leads to the top of the mountain, where the Grinch and his ghost friend are!"

"SO WHAT?" Lucy snapped, throwing snow at his face. Unfortunatly, he dodged the flying snow this time.

Lucy tried to run around him again, but he caught her and tackled her onto the ground, pinning her into the snow.

"Wait...I know you...oh my gosh..." Noah breathed.

Lucy held her breathe. Here we go.

"Lucinda May?" Noah exclaimed.

Lucy gasped. She hadn't heard that name since...

Memories came all at once.

She remembered playing in the snow, as a small child, with an older girl before her parents called her in.

"Lucinda! Martha! Come inside!"

She ran into the house, her older sister following.

Lucy remembered a boy, who looked a lot like Noah, with dark hair and green eyes dragging her up towards the mountain. She remembered him leaving her, running down as soon as sirens blared out, signaling an upcoming blizzard.

She remembered finding posters in the garbage reading: "LOST: LUCINDA MAY WHOVIER" but never recalling why the name sounded familiar. ...

"NOOO!" Lucy screamed, breaking away from Noah's grasp.

"Lucinda, listen to me!" Noah said, reaching out towards her.

"It was you! You're the one who dragged me up there! YOU!" Lucy cried, crawling away from Noah.

Noah stummbled towards her.

"STAY AWAY FROM ME!" Lucy screamed, her arms outstretched, her palms open.

"Lu-" Noah was cut off when suddenly ice hit him on the shoulder, knocking him down.

Shocked, Lucy relized that the ice had shot from her palms!

Without looking back, Lucy scrambled to the edge of the chute and jumped.

"WAIT!" Noah yelled, diving, his hand outstretched. He only caught air, because by the time he peered into the garbage chute, she was gone.

PLOT TWIST!

It literally came to me at last minute.
