"Should I call mom?" Tyler asked, nervously bouncing on the balls of his feet. He pulled his phone out of his pocket. "I think I should call mom. Mom is going to kill me if I do not call her. So I'm going to."

"Do not call mom." Jade ordered. "Her neurosis won't help at the moment. And neither is yours."

"Oh I'm sorry; my baby sister is in the hospital. We've been here for hours and we know nothing."

"Tyler, don't you work here?"

"I'm a med student. I'm usually the one helping the patients."

Jade sighed, "Will you relax! You aren't being a strong support system right now."

Tyler ran his hand over his face. "Sorry, sorry. I'll calm down, I promise."

"Thank you."

There was a knock at the door. It opened, and in walked Jade's doctor, Dr. Meade, her iPad in hand.

"Hello, Jade."

"Hi." Jade greeted.

Dr. Meade placed the iPad on her counter. She turned around and noticed Tyler. "Tyler! What are you doing here? Are you treating Jade?"

"Jade is my baby sister." Tyler replied.

"What a small world we live in." Dr. Meade turned to Jade. "Do you mind if I speak in front of your brother?"

"Absolutely not."

"She tells me everything." Tyler added.

"That may be the case, but I have to ask anyway." Dr. Meade said. "Jade does have the right to keep her medical affairs private."

"You may speak in front of Tyler, doctor. I don't mind."

"Okay. Jade, after running tests on you and your heart, since you complained of palpitations and dizziness, we think you have what is known as long QT syndrome."

"I've never heard of that. What is it?"

"It's a disorder where your heart beats erratically. It's usually triggered by stress and shock."

"How did I get this? I've been alive for twenty-five years and not once have I had this."

"Well the condition can be dormant. Most people do not have an episode until they're an adult. It can be acquired by certain medications, or it can be inherited, so you should ask your parents if any relatives have it." Dr. Meade explained. "Yours was short, and the erratic heart activity didn't last too long so you are in the clear."

"What would have happened if it go on any longer?" Jade questioned.

"Seizures, cardiac arrest, and sudden death tend to follow if you are not treated quickly, but you don't have to worry about that." Dr. Meade assured, sensing Jade's anxiety. "We want to keep you for as few more hours, just for precaution."

Jade nodded, "Okay."

"Try to relax, sweetie." Dr. Meade suggested. "Stress is the last thing you need right now."

"Easier said than done, but I'll try."

"I'll be back once we get more of your test results."

"Thank you."

Dr. Meade smiled at Jade and walked out of the room.

Once she was gone, Tyler turned back to his sister. "So, what happened?"

"Tori and I had a fight. Our first major fight."

"What? Haven't you and Tori been friends since like, forever? This was your first fight?"

"Tori and I may be polar opposites, but we don't fight. We bicker. There is a difference."

"Okay. Go on."

"My heart was racing, my pulse was beating so fast, and I was dizzy. I got so nervous, so I called you."

"My first house call." Tyler smiled. "I feel special."

"You're going to be a surgeon. It'll be your first and last house call."

Tyler frowned, "Oh yeah. So why were you and Tori arguing in the first place?"

"Because Tori was being a self righteous bitch."

"Harsh."

"It's the truth. She was able to come off of her high horse just to judge me."

"About?"

"Beck."

"Why were you guys-"

"Ty, I don't want to talk about Tori or Beck right now. My blood pressure can't handle another spike."

"Deal. Just promise me one thing."

"Last time I promised you something, I had to have dinner with dad and Tiffany."

Tyler shook his head, "No, it's nothing like that."

"Okay. What am I promising you?"

"That you'll never freaking scare me like this ever again."

"I can promise you that." Jade said, smiling. She would do everything she could in order to not have another one or these arrhythmias. "I pinky swear."

"Good. Because if you do this to me again-"

"To you?" Jade raised an eyebrow at her older brother. "I'm the one in the hospital bed."

"Yes, this is all about me and my feelings. If you do this to me again, I will kill you."

"You won't have to."

Tyler nodded, content. "Do you need anything?"

"I'm fine right now."

"So, about this whole mom thing..."

"No."

"Okay. No mom."

Diana looked at Beck, curiosity in her eyes. "You want to talk? Really?"

"Yeah."

"Have you been spending these past few days holed up at your parent's place thinking of a speech?"

"Not at all." Beck was running on autopilot. He wasn't planning on doing this, but he was there. Diana was with him. The talk might as well happen.

"Really? Beck Oliver is going to do something with a plan?" Diana almost laughed. "This isn't the man I married."

"I've changed."

"You've changed." Diana said that, with so much condescending sarcasm, a deaf man could have picked up on it. "Okay."

"Diana, you and I are not working anymore."

Diana put her book down and took her reading glasses off. She faced Beck. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, I want a divorce."

There. He finally said it. It was out in the open.

Diana sat in silence, stunned. Out of all the things she expected to hear, "I want a divorce," never even crossed her mind. She just assumed...well, she didn't really know what she assumed. Maybe she just assumed that Beck and Jade would try to keep their affair up behind her back, mistaking her as a fool. Divorce was not an option.

"Diana, you and I have been together for six years. And yeah, we've had our ups and downs in the past, but we've been stuck at a dangerous low for the longest time. In the past six months, we've had more arguments than we've ever had in our entire six years. I've slept in the guest room most night, we don't speak to each other. We just get up and go without so much as a goodbye to one another. You and I are just having one problem after the other, and I'm tired."

"So instead of going to marriage counseling and actually working on our marriage, you want to get divorced?" That didn't make sense to Diana. "I mean, you're always putting me down, you're always saying I don't put energy into this marriage, but it's obvious that you've felt some type of way for months. I guess it's too late because you've reached the ending of your rope, so I just get a heads up for a divorce."

"Would you have wanted to work on our marriage, Diana?"

"I don't know, but you haven't given me the opportunity. You already chose for me."

"I'm sorry."

"You aren't, so stop giving me your shitty apologies and your even shittier excuses." Diana spat out.

"Diana, why are we even doing this? You don't care about me, and you haven't in a long."

"That's not true!" Diana argued. It felt like a punch to the gut.

"It is."

"Oh, and I'm just supposed to treat you like you're the best husband in the world." Diana scoffed. "Oh please."

"Diana, you don't care. You haven't even tried to care. And in this past year you've just gotten colder. I don't what happened to you, but it's like you have a block of ice where your heart is."

A lone tear escaped Diana's eye, but she tried to wipe it away without Beck noticing. Too late.

Beck frowned. Diana was crying? Really, she would wait until they're breaking up at actually show basic human emotion?

"I have tried to give you so much more than you give me credit for, and I have tried to be the wife you wanted. I have put more into us than you will ever know."

"What is that supposed to mean?" Beck asked. "Tell me what you've been through, what you've sacrificed, what you have put into this? Please, enlighten me. Because I am so in the dark."

"Why? What difference is it going to make? You've already made up your mind. You're already two feet out the door. We're done."

Diana shook her head. She stood up and walked over to him. Height wise, Beck had Diana beat considering she was only 5'2, but she needed to level the playing field. Sitting down was not an option anymore. "These past few months, you've been constantly putting me down, and belittling me. Maybe you've been doing that to make this moment easier, but listen to me, Beck Oliver. I refuse to make full blame for this. You are not a good husband. Don't act like you gave me your all, and you were so desperate to make this work."

"Diana, I don't see you jumping through hoops either. You aren't suggesting anything. You're just being defensive."

"What do you want me to do? You want me to get on my knees, clutch your pants, and beg you to stay?" Diana fell to her knees, and looked up at Beck almost as if she were praying to him. "What do you want me to say? Oh no Beck, please don't leave me. What will I ever do without you?" Diana got up and brushed herself off. "Get over yourself."

"Get out." Diana ordered. "It's not like you're ever here anyway."

Beck nodded, "Okay. Look, Diana-"

"GET OUT!" Diana yelled.

Beck's eyes got wide. This was just so not Diana. The Diana he knew was always poised, and calm, and there was never a time where she wasn't in control. Diana didn't scream, or yell, or cry.

He just simply turned around and walked out of the bedroom.

Diana didn't even realize she was shaking until she tried to run a hand through her hair, and failed.

Maybe her refusal to scream or cry was causing this. Too many bottled up emotions, and one day maybe she'd explode.

She just couldn't believe Beck just thought so little of her as a person. He was actually willing to shift the blame solely on her.

Diana may not cook, or clean, but she wasn't the one seeing someone that she wasn't married to.

She scanned the bedroom and spotted her cell phone sitting on the bed. She scooped in up and scrolled through her contacts in a flash.

Finally finding the number she was looking for, Diana pressed the call button and held the phone tight to her ear.

"Hi, sweetheart!" The cheery voice of Diana's mother filled her ears.

"Hi, mom." Diana greeted.

"Are you okay?" Patricia asked, knowing her daughter too well to not notice something was wrong. "You don't sound too good."

"So Beck just left." Diana said, clenching and unclenching her fists repeatedly. "He said he wants a divorce and I'm kind of freaking out right now."

"Oh, Diana. Baby, I am so sorry."

"Can you come out here? Please? I don't really know what to do."

"Sure, I'll book a flight to Los Angeles. It might take a day or two."

"I'll book you a flight for tonight; I don't care how expensive it is." Diana bargained.

"That is not necessary. I'll see you tomorrow, Saturday at the latest."

"I just really want you here."

"I know, baby. I just have to get some stuff figured out. I can't just drop everything. I wish I could, but I can't. And I can't leave your father. He doesn't know what to do when I'm not around."

"Okay."

"I love you."

"I love you, too."

Diana angrily tossed her cell phone across the room after she hung up, not caring where it landed. A cell phone was the last thing on her mind.

Diana made up her mind. She wasn't getting divorced. If Beck thought he was going to leave her and just play house with his assistant, he was sadly mistaken. Six years of time and energy was not about to be thrown out the window. She was Missus Beckett James Oliver, and she was determined to stay Missus Beck Oliver 'til death do them part, come Hell or high water.

She stormed out of the room and walked downstairs to the home office. Jade's dad was going to find out just how big of a home wrecker his daughter was.

"Are you taking your beta blockers?"

Jade rolled her eyes at her brother's pestering of her. "Yes, I just took my beta blockers."

"How are you feeling?"

"I'm feeling annoyed because you keep calling me and asking me questions."

"I just want to make sure you're okay."

Jade held her phone tighter to her ear. She slipped on her shoes and laced them up.

"I'm fine."

"And if you're feeling weird-"

"Call you."

"I was going to say call 911, but you can call me too."

"I got to go." Jade said. "Cat should be here in a few minutes."

"Fine. I love you."

"I love you more."

"That's not possible."

Jade smiled. "I'll talk to you later. Have a good day."

"You too. Are you going back to work today?"

"Yeah."

"Okay. Bye."

"Bye, Tyler."

Jade hung up the phone, and slid it into her pocket. She finished lacing up her shoes.

In all honesty, Jade was actually hoping to get back to work. It had been three days since her trip to the hospital. Beck called to check up on her, but she lied and said she was dealing with a cold, but she would be back at work.

There was a knock at the door. Jade got up and answered. Instead of her small, red headed friend behind the door, it was her dad.

"Dad!" This was a shock. Richard never came to her apartment. "What are you doing here?"

"I wanted to see you." Richard replied.

"This couldn't wait?"

"No." Without invitation, Richard walked inside the condo. Jade didn't protest. She just closed the door. "Are you going to work?"

"I was going to get breakfast with Cat."

"No Tori?"

Jade shook her head, "No Tori. Not this time."

"Aren't you two attached at the hip?"

"We're just having a bit of a disagreement." Jade shrugged. "It's girl stuff. You wouldn't get it."

"Yeah, I wouldn't understand that at all."

"We'll kiss and make up eventually. Can I get you some coffee, or tea?"

"No, I'm fine. Sit down." Richard said. "I want to show you something."

"Oh." Jade walked over to her couch and sat down. "What's up?"

Richard put his leather brief case on Jade's coffee table. He opened it and pulled out a Manila envelope. "Something interesting was sent to the office yesterday."

"What was it?"

Richard opened up the envelope and pulled out two big, glossy pictures. He slid them across the table for Jade to see.

Jade hesitantly reached for the pictures and flipped them over. It was two pictures of Beck and Jade. They looked like stills from a camera. Beck had cameras in his office? Since when?

"What are-"

"Don't insult my intelligence with a mediocre excuse." Richard ordered, shutting down Jade's attempt to explain her way out of her situation.

"Who sent these to you?" Jade asked.

"At this point, it doesn't matter? You've been exposed."

"Dad-"

"How could you be so stupid?"

"What?"

"You had the best education money could buy growing up, you speak three languages, you went to one of the best public universities in the country, and not only that, you graduated magna cum laude. You could be doing so much more with your life, but you chose to be someone's assistant. So again I ask: how could you be so stupid?"

"You just listed all of these great accomplishments of mine, but you just negated them."

"A person can be educated and stupid, Jadelyn. It's truth, a sad one albeit, but it's the truth. You are a great example. And not only are you an assistant, you are with your boss! Your married boss! Just how much lower can you get?"

"It's not what you think." Jade said.

Richard rolled his eyes, "Okay, then explain it all to me. What is it?"

"This isn't just some affair. We're going to be together."

"Do you know how absurd you sound right now? You guys are going to be together?" Richard laughed. "You are a fool to think that man is going to leave his wife, and risk his company's esteemed image for you. Why buy the cow?"

"Who says he's getting milk?"

"Who's to say he won't?" Richard retorted. "You've never been one with self control. Or virtue. Or chastity."

Jade stood up, sick of her father literally talking down to her. "Well what can I say? I take after my philandering father."

"Young lady, I suggest you watch the way you speak to me."

"No! I am sick and tired of you, your hypocrisies, and your criticism."

"Jade, I don't think you're fully grasping what you are doing. Have you not fully grasped the severity of this? Whatever fling you have going on with him, is going to destroy lives. You are just going to leave a path of destruction in your wake."

"This isn't a fling. Beck loves me."

"Oh he loves you. How sweet." That actually got a laugh out of Richard. "No he doesn't. He is a man, and us men will lie, cheat, and steal on our quest for a woman. He's bored with his life, and you are a distraction. You're young, you're pretty, and you're thrilling. Nothing more, nothing less. Once he gets you, he'll be bored and he'll find a newer assistant to play the same cat and mouse game. All Beck had to do was whisper a few sweet nothings into your ear, probably shell out a few bucks on you, and you melt into a puddle of goo. And once Beck is done running this game on you, where does he go? Home to his wife. And I would know this because I've been playing the game since Beck was a child. You're taking his word, his empty word. I thought I raised you to have a lick of common sense."

"You didn't raise me." Jade argued. "Mom did. You are nothing more to me than a glorified sperm donor with whom I unfortunately share DNA. You did nothing but write checks. I doubt you even know my favorite color."

Richard rolled his eyes, "Is this what this whole fiasco is about? Is this some pathetic cry for attention? You want me to notice you?"

"Maybe it is. It seems like you only pay attention to women who spread their legs and ruin marriages. I mean, you married one."

"Jade, when you inevitably fall on your ass because of this stunt, do not look to me to clean up your mess."

"I think it's time for you to leave."

"Keep the pictures." Richard said. He closed his briefcase and stood up. "It was very simple for someone to find out about you. I hope no one else does."

"I don't plan on keeping this some huge secret for much longer."

Richard walked towards the front door and opened it. But before walking out, he turned back to face Jade. "I've listened to you complain and bad mouth Tiffany for over eight years, but look at you. You're content being similar to her."

Jade's eyes flashed with anger. "Don't you dare compare me to your whore."

"You're so angry because you know it's true."

"Goodbye, Richard. Have a nice life, without me in it. I'm pretty sure that's been what you wanted ever since I was born." Jade put her hand up to her dad's chest and nudged him out of her condo, slamming the door in his face.

Jade was drawn out of her bedroom by the loud, insistent knocking on her door. At first, she was hoping that whoever was on the other side would just leave after a few moments, but the knocks only got more persistent. Whoever it was, they were not giving up.

She got out of her bed and begrudgingly went to answer the door. "Who is-"

"Hi." Beck greeted.

"Beck, hi."

"Can I come in?"

"Of course." Jade stepped aside so Beck could get past her. "What are you doing here?"

"Because it is five in the afternoon, and you didn't show up to work today."

"Are you serious?"

"Yeah."

"I'm sorry. I just had a horrible morning, and I just went back to sleep. I meant to call you, but I guess I forgot."

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine." Jade started walking.

"Are you sure?" Beck prodded, following Jade. She pushed open her bedroom door and entered.

"Yes." Jade turned around and pulled Beck into a kiss, hoping to shut him up. She didn't want to do any talking.

It only worked for a second because Beck was able to summon up enough will power to pull away from the kiss. "Jade-"

"Why are you asking me so many questions?"

"Because you didn't show up for work, you haven't been answering your phone, it's like you dropped off the face of the planet."

"I'm sorry."

Beck reached up and gently swiped the corner of Jade's eye with the pad of his thumb. "And you were obviously crying."

"It's not obvious."

"You have tear stains. And you don't have allergies. So why don't you talk to me."

"My dad hates me."

"That's a bit extreme, don't you think?"

"It's the truth. I am a failure in his eyes, and nothing I do will ever be good enough for him."

"What happened?"

"Why didn't you tell me that you have cameras in your office?"

"What are you talking about?" Beck sat on Jade's bed and kicked off his shoes. "I don't have cameras in my office."

"Yes you do. Because my dad got pictures of us, kissing in your office."

"What?"

Jade walked out of the bedroom. A minute later, she returned with the pictures in her hand. "Look for yourself."

Beck took the glossy picture out of Jade's hand and looked at it closely. As far as he was concerned, he didn't have cameras in his office, bit he definitely was going to get to the bottom of it.

"I swear I had no idea. I wouldn't have done anything if I had known."

"It doesn't even matter, because it's out, and my dad and I have destroyed whatever piece of relationship we could've had."

"Relax."

"It's so easy for you to say. You actually have your father's unconditional love."

"Stop saying that. Your dad loves you. I'm pretty sure loving your child is innate."

Jade scoffed, "Yeah, you don't know my dad. He's a sociopath. I don't think he knows how to love, and if he does, he only loves himself. And money." She shook her head. "I don't want to talk about my dad anymore. I can't put any more energy into Richard West. Do you want something to drink, preferably with a lot of alcohol with it?"

"Sure."

"Great. I'll be right back."

With Jade gone, Beck was able to look around freely. Her room was neat. There was a huge flat screen television hanging on the wall, and next to it was a picture of a woman who was practically identical to Jade, but older. He assumed it was her mother.

The door to his right led to the bathroom, so the door on his left must be the closet.

Beck turned his head slightly and looked at Jade's nightstand. There wasn't anything out of the ordinary on it. Her cell phone, a tube of lipstick, a lamp, an alarm clock, a hospital bracelet, a bottle of pills-

He stopped. Pills? Letting his curiosity get the best of him, Beck picked up the tiny orange bottle and read the label. Sectral. Those were beta-blockers. What did Jade need beta-blockers for?

"I hope you like vodka tonics."

"Can you drink alcohol with these?" Beck asked, shaking the bottle.

"Yeah, I can drink. And why are you going through my stuff?"

"I wasn't going through anything." Beck said, getting defensive. "The bottle was just sitting here and I happened to notice it. You're not prone to heart attacks, are you?"

"I found out I sometimes get an irregular heartbeat. It's nothing."

"Are you serious? Jade, that's the grossest understatement I think I've ever heard in my entire life."

Jade shrugged, "I'm okay, I caught it in time. I just have to take my medication every day, and I'll be fine." She picked up her drink, but Beck grabbed her wrist, forcing her to stop. "What?"

"You aren't seriously about to drink right now, are you?"

"Yeah, why wouldn't I?"

Beck glared at Jade, "Was that a serious question?"

"My doctor didn't tell me that alcohol was off limits, and neither did my over protective, med school brother."

Beck snatched the tumbler out of Jade's hand. "You aren't going to drink in front of me."

"You aren't my father, and it's not like I ever listened to him-"

"I'm being serious. Alcohol and meds do not mix."

Jade stared Beck down for a few moments, but Beck, used to being the boss, didn't back down. Eventually Jade caved.

"Fine. No alcohol. For today, at least. I'm not quitting cold turkey." Beck opened his mouth to reply, but Jade shot him a cold glare.

"Deal. Go pour those out."

Jade took a deep breath. She took her wrist out of Beck's hand and turned around. She picked the drinks up and walked out of the room.

She came back and laid down next to Beck. He noticed a sigh escape her lips as her head hit one of the many pillows on her bed. Jade never struck him as a girl who needed about ten pillows on her bed.

"Are you tired?"

"Yes."

"Get some sleep."

"No, you're here. I have to entertain my guests."

"You don't have to."

Jade ignored Beck. She grabbed her remote control and turned on her television. Some random talk show was on. Two women were trying to establish the paternity of their children.

"I love shows like this. They really make me appreciate my life, and the fact that I do not have kids."

"Do you want kids?"

"One day. There is still stuff I want to do. I want to get my twenties out of my system before I settle down and become a mom because I don't want to end up resenting my life."

"Good point."

"Did you want kids?"

Beck shrugged, "I don't know. I think I wanted kids, but somewhere along the way, I stopped caring. I think it's because Diana had such a strong determination to not have them. I thought she wanted them, but one day she told me she didn't want kids, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Case closed. I just went along with it."

"I could imagine you with a baby." Jade laughed. "It's a funny image though."

"Really?"

"Yeah. Your office would be the baby's. There would be a playpen in the corner, toys and bottles everywhere, and you'd dress the baby in nothing but suits and cashmere argyle sweaters."

"That is a funny thought. So the hypothetical baby would live with me in my office?"

"Why not? You practically live there yourself."

"Touché."

"You'd be a good dad. Your future children will be lucky, if you choose to have any."

"Thanks."

Jade just smiled in reply. Beck picked up her hand and drew circles on her palm with his finger. His noticed she had a imprint from what he assumed was probably the hospital bracelet sitting on her nightstand.

The thought of Jade being in the hospital, especially with something as serious as a heart condition, scared him. If anything happened to her, he'd lose it.

The shrill ring of Beck's cell phone filled Jade's bedroom, bringing him out of his sleep.

He groaned as he opened his eyes. It was pitch black outside, so it was safe to assume it was either really late at night, or extremely early in the morning.

Beck checked the time on Jade's alarm clock. 3:18 AM. Who was calling him so early in the morning? He looked down at Jade. She was still sleeping. Her head was in the crook of his arm.

He pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and checked the caller ID. It was a number he didn't recognize. Despite not knowing who was calling, he answer.

"Hello?" Beck greeted.

"Hi, is this Beckett Oliver?"

"Yes." Beck stifled a yawn by covering his mouth. "May I ask who's calling me at such an hour?"

"My name is Doctor Linda Spencer from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center."

"Well, hello Doctor Spencer."

"Mr. Oliver, I'm calling you because you are listed as Diana Holloway Oliver's emergency contact."

"I'm her husband." Beck said, sitting up. "What's going on? Is Diana okay?"

"You need to get to the hospital. Diana has been in a car wreck."

Happy Earth Day!
