Devlin's Journal,

It has been two weeks since the funeral; I decided to spend as my time with Logan and Laura if only to remind me I wasn't without family. We walked around town the whole time, just hanging out together. We went and watched a movie then went to play fetch in the park with Crest. I started to feel like I did with Skylar and Salem, they both understood and humored me for the day… however there was something off about our trip around town. Things seemed to be extra unlucky that day, for instance when he walked to the movie theater an anvil almost smashed onto me, when we looked up there was nothing even above the building. When we walked to the park Crest found what Logan recognized as a Black Mamba that almost bit me. Things were just getting worse from there, but I just copped it up to horrible coincidences.

… Ok I know you don't believe that but what explanation was there? Unless someone was trying to kill me in weird almost accidental ways then there was nothing but coincident… weird WEIRD coincident! Anyway after my happy day I went to the professor to inform him of my new power to see into people's hearts. He was as astonished as I was, he called it empathy, a rare and powerful form of telepathy that not many mutants' had. He warned me that it was just as invasive as telepathy and should only use it with permission. As much as I wanted to disobey him he was right. Getting into people's deepest emotions was just wrong unless they really wanted you to know what they felt.

However… he did have me practice the ability with him so that I could at least try and control it. When I looked into his heart I saw so much love, love for his students and love for even his demented brother. I looked deeper into his memories and from there saw into Juggernaut's memories. He was so sad… he used to be week and defenseless when he was young… I saw him praying day and night but never getting an answer... until the Raven spoke to him. He took pity on the boy and gave him a stone, the same stone that turned me emotionally dead and into an actually wolf. I don't know if the raven knew what would happen to his mind but I think it showed him that power was not everything.

I told the professor of the loneliness deep within his brother's heart and he cried. I went deeper into the memories and saw the professor's interactions with his brother before he gained power from the Raven. They were just as close as I was to Skylar and Laura, but when the professor's powers came into fruition it broke the younger making him cold and withered with jealousy. He wanted power and to be strong and out of his brother's shadow… he cried at night feeling lonely and useless… no wonder the Raven answered his call… I know I would have.

After the session the professor left to Juggernaut's prison. While I left to contemplate what I just saw and how if I could to help… I still don't have an answer. I asked Crest but he just shrugged and said quote 'there are so many cold and withered hearts in the world, do you really think you can mend them all?' I had no idea what to say… then again I should have just kicked the mutt and say yes! Sure a lot of people in the world were hurting but not all of them! Maybe there was some way to arrange a way to send people to the ones that were hurting and help them… then again that didn't seem really well… realistic.

But I could still feel it, from in all directions only slightly muffled by Crest's power; the sorrow and despair from the hearts of everyone crying out for a friend… I promise you all… I will find a way to help you. if it takes until the end of time I will think and think and think again until I find the way to rekindle the fire within your heart.

OK readers second season is off to a good start right?

well this is the first of the new shorts the Snake Bites.
