On their first night Kasey's breath tickled her ear when he murmured, "I didn't peg you as the spooner type."
Instead of snapping at him, she jabbed her elbow into his ribs then snuggled closer. She squeezed her eyes shut and wished the sun would never rise. Vivi would never tell him that she was counting the thumps of his heart against her back, or memorizing the flutter of his eyelashes as he dreamed, or saving the warmth of his body against hers for the centuries where there would be nothing beside her but an empty space in the bed.
