Chloe's actually nervous. She doesn't know why. She's done this routine literally dozens of times. But something feels different tonight as the team waits in the wings for their turn on stage. Chloe tries not to think about it, but it's a bit futile when the object is standing right next to her. Beca. Everything's Beca lately.
She wants this to go right more than ever to prove to Beca that this can work. Maybe it's misplaced guilt .She tried to back Beca's idea for a new setlist at practice, but she caved, pretty quickly in fact. Beca deserved more. Especially, when she agreed with Beca.
As the group on stage exits, Chloe is struck by the thought that her mom and Aunt Jane are in the audience. And they are going to see the same routine they have been seeing for years. It would be nice to give them something new.
As the Bellas take their positions on stage, Chloe's last thought before she gets in the Bellas zone, is that she hopes there's no issues with her voice.
"That's not the point, Aubrey!" Chloe says into the room.
"Groupies for the Barden Bellas!" A knock sounds.
Chloe rolls her eyes at her aunt's voice. She pulls their dressing room door open.
"Hey, guys," Chloe greets.
"Chlo, you were so good. How's your throat?" Maura asks as soon as she sees her daughter. Maura takes Chloe's face in her hands and presses on her throat. "Hi, Aubrey."
"Hi, Jane and Maura," Aubrey replies. "Did you enjoy the show?"
Chloe pulls away from her mother. "Mom, I'm okay. I"ll take the tea when I get home."
"Where's everyone?" Jane asks.
"They ran out when Aubrey's post-performance speech ended," Chloe informs accusatorially.
"Let's just go and we'll talk about this later." Aubrey grabs her bag roughly and leaves.
"Everything okay?" Maura asks.
Chloe rolls her eyes in exasperation. "Yeah. Let's just get out of here."
Chloe leads the detective and the coroner out of the room.
"So... that performance was interesting," Jane comments with mirth. "That Fat Amy was really into it."
"Yeah, she went a little overboard, but I think the crowd responded a little."
"And Aubrey didn't agree," Maura surmises.
Chloe spots the back of Aubrey at the top of stairs.
"Aub, what's -" Chloe stops when she sees the commotion. Before Jane can push past the three other women to break up the chaos, Beca and Fat Amy's struggle over the trophy ends.
"Oh, god," Maura says when the trophy flies through the entrance window from Beca's hands.
"Jeez, Beca," Chloe whispers as a cop makes his way toward the building.
"Okay, okay. You two get out of here and I'll take care of Beca," Jane says. She makes her way quickly down the stairs. "Maur, get them out of here."
"Come on, girls." Maura ushers the two singers away from the commotion and toward the exit.
"Mitchell," a female voice calls out.
Beca rolls her eyes as she pushes off the bench and approaches the bars. She's the only one in the cell and no one has even walked past the holding area since she was brought in.
"Mitchell's not here. I think they made a tunnel and snuck out. I decided to stay here like a good law-abiding citizen," Beca responds to the officer when she can be seen.
"Sure, kid." The officer opens the cell. "Someone vouched for you and is paying for the damage."
"Oh, cool." Beca follows the officer.
"Detective Rizzoli?" Beca observes as the officer calls out to a tall brunette, who is signing papers.
"Hey, Beca. Thanks, Candace." Jane finishes the stack of papers in front of her with a flourish of the pen.
"No problem, Detective." Beca's brow furrows at the situation - the officer's voice, her eyes not at all discreetly checking out this detective, and oh yeah, this stranger who knows her name and has apparently gotten her out of this mess. Well, at least her dad isn't here.
"Well," Jane turns to the smaller brunette," let's get out of here."
"Okay," Beca responds. "Person I definitely know," Beca mutters as they both start toward the exit, with Beca keeping an acceptable distance. The two turn the corner to the front hallway. "So… you are?"
Jane laughs and holds out her hand. "Jane Rizzoli, Chloe's aunt."
"Oh, hi," Beca shakes Jane's hand. "And you're a detective?
"Yup."
"Oh, cool. So what was the damage? It was obviously a window, but you know, how much did it cost? Officer, uh, Candace... she said you paid for the damage."
"Don't worry about it. It was obviously an accident."
"Really?"
"Yeah, anything for a Bella."
"Okay?" Beca says skeptically. "So what happens now?"
"I take you home. Baker Hall's still the freshman suite?"
"Let me see your badge."
Jane laughs and hands Beca her badge.
"And your phone," Beca says after she inspects the badge.
"Uh, why?"
"To check the contacts."
"For Chloe's number?" Jane hands over her phone with a chuckle. "I like you, kid."
Once Beca sees both Aubrey and Chloe's numbers in the detective's phone, she gives Jane back her phone.
"Alright, let's go," Beca says. Jane holds open the police department's door for Beca.
"Hey, Hilary Swank from Million Dollar Baby," Jesse greets.
Jane observes the pair as they bicker down the walkway. "Alright, guys. I'll give you a ride back to campus." Their walk toward Jane's car is stopped by an SUV swerving into a parking spot in front of them. A man pops out of the driver's seat.
"Dude, you called my dad?"
Jane is at the car in a few strides. "Hi, Mr. Mitchell. I'm Detective Rizzoli. Everything is taken care of. it was just an accident." Jane is aware of Beca and Jesse arguing behind her.
"And you are?"
"I'm Chloe's aunt, one of the Bellas."
"Dad, it's not a big deal," Beca addresses her father.
"Yeah, Beca it is. I get a call in the middle of the night, saying my daughter's been arrested for destruction of property."
"It was a misunderstanding, and Jane took care of it."
Beca's father turns to the detective. "I appreciate your help, and please let me know how much the damage is." The professor pulls out his wallet and hands Jane a business card. He turns to his daughter. "Beca, in the car. And if you think I'm going to pay for you to go to LA, I'm not."
"You're not even going to hear me out?"
"No, not tonight." He gets in the car.
Beca sighs and drags her feet to the car.
"I'll give you ride back, Jesse." Jane suggests.
"Thanks."
Jane lounges on her hotel bed and channel surfs as Maura relaxes with her tablet at the window seat.
"Jane, are you going to spend all night flipping through the channels?" Maura asks as she swipes up on her tablet.
"I'm looking for something."
"And that is?"
"I'll know it when I see it."
A knock interrupts Maura's response. "Did you order room service?"
"Nope," Jane answers as she looks through the door's peephole. "It's Bug." Jane pulls the door open.
Maura sets the tablet down and moves to her bed. "Hey, honey," Maura greets as she sits against the headboard. Chloe flops on to the bed and rests her head on her mother's lap. "Oh, honey, what's wrong?" Maura runs her fingers through her daughter's hair.
Chloe groans. "Aubrey is just so frustrating. She won't listen to anyone. I mean, I know she wants to win, but so does everyone else. I just don't understand why she won't take anyone else's ideas into account. We're supposed to be a team. And I'm supposed to be co-captain."
"Yeah, you guys really do need a new set," Jane comments back on the other bed.
"Jane," Maura admonishes.
"She's right," Chloe acknowledges miserably. "And I know it. And Beca makes these cool mash-ups."
"Always back to Beca, huh?" Jane teases.
"That's not what this is," Chloe grumbles. She sits up on the bed. "I really think if we use Beca's mash-ups, we could win, or at least have a better shot at it. And Aubrey doesn't even listen to me."
"Then make her listen."
"This is Aubrey."
"And you're her best friend, and co-captain, like you said. You need to make her listen," Maura advises.
"I know, but I don't know how. She's so obsessed with winning the way the Bellas of the past did. Even though they haven't won in years. Because our songs suck…I mean they're good, but not winning-good, you know, anymore."
"Yeah," Jane agrees.
"Mom, how do you get Aunt Jane to listen?"
"Are you comparing me to Aubrey?" Jane takes offense.
"Well, you're both ridiculously stubborn when you want to be," Maura comments.
"Exactly," Chloe adds. "How do you even get through that?"
"Food is usually a good start. When she's eating, she can't really talk back."
"Okay, rude." Jane interjects.
Maura and Chloe share a laugh before Maura continues, "With the food distracting her, I find she's more willing to listen to reason."
"I listen to reason just fine."
"Of course," Maura responds. "It's just better when you've eaten," she finishes with a smirk.
Jane rolls her eyes.
"So maybe talk to Aubrey over dinner?" Chloe questions.
"It can't hurt. Some time when you are both calm and away from Bella activities," Maura suggests.
Chloe nods. She addresses her aunt. "So, everything worked out at the precinct? Beca didn't say much when she got back to her room."
"Yeah, everything was sorted. Beca's dad picked her up and I drove Jesse to Baker. He's pretty nice," Jane teases.
"Ugh, Jesse was there?"
"If it makes you feel better, Beca was pretty mad that he called her dad."
"Idiot," Chloe murmurs. "Can I stay with you guys tonight? I just need some space from Aubrey."
"Sure, Bug," Jane accepts.
"But honey, you know you'll need talk to Aubrey soon right? For your sake and the Bellas," Maura comments.
"Yeah, I know. I will" Chloe rests her head on Maura's lap again.
