This is a continuation of the scene at the end of Season 6, Episode 8 - Fade Into You...

All Damon could do was stare at Elena, nod his head and whisper "sure".

She was asking for his help with finding Bonnie. She was holding his hand - not really the way he wanted, but at least she was touching him, something he wasn't sure she would ever do again.

She had come to him, he realized. He had nearly given up on her, and she had come to him asking for help. At least that part about her hadn't changed.

"You and Bonnie really talked about me?" Elena asked him. Her face showed that she didn't really understand it.

"You were what Bonnie and I had in common, so yes."

Elena broke eye contact, pulled her hand away from him, and shook her head. "I didn't think you two had anything in common. I mean, I'm glad you had each other, but I thought you hated each other."

Damon just stared ahead. Finally Elena said, "I guess I remember it wrong."

"We wanted the same thing, " Damon said, "to get back. I guess she wanted me to get back to you more than she wanted herself to get back."

Elena stared at him briefly before softly repeating, "She wanted you to get back to me."

Damon looked at her, then turned away again. "It's not that big a stretch."

"It is in my mind. I don't remember you two getting along at all."

"Do you remember threatening to kill her? Because that came up."

"I wasn't myself," Elena said. "My humanity was off. That was your fault."

Damon snorted. "So you remember that. You would remember that."

She looked him questioningly. "So it's not true?"

Damon grimaced. "It's true. There are just some other things you should remember as well. You're missing some context."

Elena looked away again as Damon added, "At least you know you're a vampire."

Elena looked at the drink in Damon's hand. "Yeah, and I didn't want to be a vampire. That's your fault, too. I hated you for that."

"Hey, I didn't want you to be a vampire either," Damon said quickly. "Do you remember that?"

Elena looked at him briefly, shook her head, and looked away.

"But you broke up with Liam," Damon noted. "You have some small feeling deep inside of you that you can't shake."

Elena bit her lip and nodded. "Caroline's going to think I'm crazy."

"Bonnie won't," Damon replied. "It's happened before."

"So Bonnie approved of us? Because Caroline said..."

"Don't listen to Vampire Barbie when it comes to you and me," Damon interrupted. "I'm sure that every fight you two had was because of your feelings for me."

Elena took a deep breath. "But Bonnie approved?"

Damon hesitated, then said, "Bonnie wanted what I want - for you to be happy.

"So she sent you back to me," Elena said quietly.

"We'll get her back, and you can ask her yourself."

Elena nodded silently, the raised her head and looked at Damon as if she remembered something.

"What happened when we were caught in the rain?" She asked. "You said you thought about it all the time. It had to be more than you just taking me home."

Damon considered briefly, then said, "There was more to it, but it won't mean anything unless you remember it yourself."

Elena sighed and nodded, wishing again that she had her memories back.
