When Lim came back to his senses the first thing he saw was an old hag beaming down at him. Before he could scream like a girl ("That's sexist" yelled Boris), the old hag who looked to be about 200 years old, croaked out first.
"What's your name, boy?"
Panicked, Lim squeaked out, "I'm- I'm Lim. Lim Youngwood."
The old woman crossed her arms. "Well I Lim Youngwouldn't ever open my mouth to speak if I was you. Your voice sounds like a duck being hit by a car on loop."
Boris and Morris began laughing inaudibly. "OOOOOHHH BURRRRN."
Lim suddenly sat up, realising he was on the ground this entire time. "Wh-where are we?"
"Ah yes, welcome to my humble abode: Cactlantis!" the old lady said.
Lim looked around his surroundings. Despite its grand name, Cactlantis was just another humble abode. The fireplace, the cookies and milk on the table, and the decor gave Cactlantis a very homey touch.
"Woah, hold up." Lim shook his head as questions flooded in. "Who are you? What are you doing in the Hunger Games? Have you come to rescue us? Is this a trick- like a hologram?"
"My name is- well truth be told, I'm so old I've forgotten it, but you can just call me whatever you like!" The old woman shuffled over to the kettle and poured some tea for the tributes. "The Hunger Games? Whatever are you talking about? I'm just an old lady living out the rest of her years in solitude."
Lim looked at the twins in utter confusion but the twins just smiled back as if finding an old lady in a Hunger Games arena was totally normal. The hag then ushered them to sit around the dining table and eat the cookies she had just baked for them.
"It's been such a long time since I've had visitors..." she said.
"Probably because you never brush your teeth." Morris whispered as her eyes began to water from the stench.
"...that you all must stay for supper!"
At that, a banquet of food materialised. It was so much more food than they ever had in District 9 that Boris and Morris immediately agreed, and mentally decided to hide out the rest of the Games in here. However, Lim felt that something was very very off with the Hag and Cactlantis and insisted that they leave as soon as possible. But being the spleens they were, the twins refused.
"Wow," Boris leant back in her chair and patted her full stomach. "That was the best food I've ever had."
"They all contained my special secret ingredient!" The hag croaked croakingly.
"What was it?" Lim asked like an idiot.
"It's a secret ingredient, Craig. SECRET." Grannie said with sudden millennial sarcasm.
"Who is Craig?" Lim whispered but everyone ignored him.
"You know what?" Morris said. "I can't remember if we've slept in the games so far. I am tired."
"oF cOURse!" Grannie grinned grinningly. "Let me show you to the rooms."
Lim tried to catch the twins' eyes, but he couldn't just rudely take them out of their sockets and so they purposefully ignored him. This hag was being nice to them and feeding them and giving them a safe place to sleep. They trusted her.
"That's it," Lim said. "I'm leaving. You guys can stay here if you want but nuh-uh. Uh-nuh. I ain't stayin wit dis old woman." He left the dining room and went into the hall that lead to the front door. But there was no door. Just a wall, with no indication of a door ever being there. He turned around and screamed. Grannies hagkins was standing behind him, a manic grin twisting her features beyond recognition. Morris and Boris watched from the end of the corridor, confused and slightly scared.
"You can't leave, boy," she whispered into his face. "Not without finishing the game."
"Oh are you Jigsaw now? Or is this Jumanji." Lim asked. "At least be original."
The grannie stepped back, and the creepy vibe fell for a second. "You idiot this entire thing is a game. The Hunger GAMES? This is where I come in." Her voice dropped to a whisper again. "The Grannie Game."
Lim thought that was kind of cringy but wisely kept his mouth shut.
"Now here are the rules," Grannie spoke to all three of them now. "There are no exits to Cactlantis right now. The only way you can escape is if someone dies."
There was silence for a few seconds.
"That's it?" Lim roared. "No riddle? No cheats or clues or anything?"
He pushed past the woman and stormed down the hall. "No exits, my foot." He muttered under his breath. He would look until he found one.
He entered a random door and found it to be the kitchen. He was about to leave when he noticed something.
There was a chopping board with a knife next to it. And on the chopping board, half chopped up, sat a prickly cactus.
Lim ran to the cupboard and threw it open. Cacti of all shapes and sizes lined the shelves. They had labels. "Soup", "Spaghetti", "for juicing" and many more. There was one label in front of a cactus that said "cookies". Lim screamed and backed away from the cupboard as he thought of the cookies they'd eaten. The secret ingredient... Was cactus? Morris and Boris ran into the kitchen. Lim silently pointed a shaking finger at the cactus cupboard. They retched and spat.
Then the grannie appeared from nowhere. She grabbed their shirts and dragged them to the back of Cactlantis. She shoved the three into a room.
"Goodnight!" she said and slammed the door, as darkness filled the room.
