Reality felt altered. The room was dark and completely bare, except for one thing. There was a large fish tank sitting on the middle of the floor, angled slightly so that it wasn't parallel with the walls. It illuminated the whole room, giving everything a blue glow. A single fish floated in it, staring at the three tributes.
"Okay down to business," Morris said. "Who dies?"
"Woah," Lim said. "Slow down. You're not seriously considering this are you? Why don't we just break out of here from a window or something?"
The twins looked at him.
"I vote Lim." Borris said.
"Me too." Morris said. They advanced on him.
"Woah woah woah!" Lim put his hands up and backed away. "What about… what about Mr Cat?"
A screeching laughter came from somewhere in the room. The fish was grinning at them.
"Mr Cat is long gone," the fish eerily said with grannie's voice. "He lead you here in the first place."
Morris gasped. "Mr Cat betrayed us!"
"That rat!" Boris ranted.
"Yes," the fish continued. "Mr Cat and I are… old friends."
Just as the fish started to launch into a backstory, Lim interrupted. "Ok why don't we kill the fish instead?"
Suddenly the fish screeched, "That's not allowed!?"
"Guys let's just kill the fish and maybe we can get out!" Lim turned excitedly to the twins. His smile faltered when he saw the glance they gave each other. The soft blue glow of the fish tank cast strange shadows across their faces, making them look almost evil. Their eyes flicked to him.
"Guys?" Lim said as they took a step forward. "C'mon you're not actually gonna fall for this are you? The Gamemakers are trying to get us to turn on each other! You're not even gonna try the fish option?" He backed away.
Boris and Morris faltered. Were they seriously going to consider murdering their fellow district partner just because of some fish? Had they really succumbed to the dehumanising nature of the Games?
"If.. If we don't kill you, you will end up taking one of us down." Morris said, her voice wavering.
Lim couldn't deny it. He had been considering breaking the fish tank and using the glass to end their lives. Suddenly he felt sick at the thought of taking away a life.
"I'm sorry," the twins simultaneously whispered.
Boris and Morris both fingered the handle of a frying pan in Boris' pocket. Without any warning, they brandished the weapon out. It was the last thing he saw before the twins bludgeoned his head open. The strawberry blond boy fell to the floor, dead. One less tribute in the arena. One step closer to home.
"In the movies, frying pans only knock people out," Boris taught the reader. "But in real life they can actually kill."
"Shut up, Boris. How can you joke about that?!" Morris suddenly sobbed. "We… we just killed Lim!"
Morris' hand started shaking. She collapsed onto her knees and began howling hysterically.
"AhhH!" screamed Boris as she got dragged down to the ground.
"This isn't who we are!" Morris cried.
Lim's lifeless body stared at the twin, as if he was taunting her for her sin. While Morris was emotionally traumatised by the murder, it was clear that Boris had become desensitised.
"Listen, sis." Boris grabbed her face. "This is the Hunger Games. It's kill, or be killed."
Morris contemplated on those words before she nodded. "Okay."
"C'mon. Let's get out of here."
Suddenly a hidden door opened in the wall opposite where they came in. Light flooded the room, and the fish tank looked normal. The fish that the grannie was seemingly speaking through previously was swimming near the top, looking for food.
Relieved, the twins ran out of the room. It took a few seconds for their eyes to adjust to the sunlight. They heard the secret door swing shut behind them. They were back in the cactus maze.
"Now we just have to find our way out." Morris said, as she wiped her eyes. They turned left. As Morris pondered about something philosophical regarding the value of life and retribution and punishment and repentance, a gruff voice suddenly interrupted her thoughts.
"Ahem," a voice sounded from behind them.
The twins spun around, their whole bodies tense in fear, worried that the hag had returned. A figure stepped out of the shadows of the cactus maze, and to their complete surprise, it was…..
"LIM!?" Morris screamed.
"Wait so frying pans do only knock people out?" Boris asked.
"No idiots," Lim sighed. "Did you not notice that the cannon didn't go off?"
The twins looked at each other.
"I died but the gamemakers forgot to sound the cannon. So I had to be resurrected."
Somewhere in the distance, Logic screamed something: "THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS?"
Lim's eyes shadowed. "I've seen things… you people would never belie-"
"That's great can we leave?" Boris said impatiently.
