Chapter 29: Izumo

A/N: Reminder: 1 chapter remaining! Requested by KazenoShun.

Nanami should have known today was going to be one of those days when she woke up and heard the thunder clapping loudly and illuminating the drizzly morning rain with strikes of lightning. The last time the weather had been this bad, Narukami had been in a frightful mood. Nanami dared not think of the consequences of this mood swing.

Tomoe had not bothered setting a welcome arrangement for the Thunder God's arrival since the previous time he had, he had ended up a child and extremely sick. What he would do to that God, when he got his hands on her…

Nanami wished her Saturdays wouldn't be so eventful but it was difficult to sleep with the humid weather and the tedious beating of rain against the windows. The least she could do was make herself presentable for the arrival of her least favourite God. She too held a grudge on Narukami for making Tomoe leave her side when he was so grievously ill.

Tomoe and Nanami waited in silence. The only sound was the constant tap tap tap of raindrops on the windows and the irksome ticking of a taunting clock. Suddenly, the door blew open and the Thunder God stood in all her splendour, a look of rage befalling her harsh features and her black heeled boots especially sharp.

She invited herself in without a word and her meek familiars followed, a different pair to last time. Nanami pitied them; she knew how severely Narukami would beat them until they had to be replaced yet again.

'I'm sure you haven't forgotten the face of the most gracious Thunder God, Narukami. Don't think you will get the same luxury treatment of me relaying news to you personally,' she added furiously, mistaking their irritated expressions for ones of smugness, 'I'm only here in the first place as a friend of mine asked me to be. Girl, you are to be summoned to the council of the Gods, Izumo, to await trial,' she curled her lip, 'and I am to be the one to take you.'

Nanami's expression was one of shock, hurt and fury. 'Why am I being summoned to a trial when I haven't committed a crime? And why do I have to go with you!'

'Hold your impertinent tongue!' Narukami screeched, rising from her seat and glaring at Nanami so filthily, her eyes flashed with thunder. The rain outside quickened and lightning struck a tree nearby.

Tomoe was already in between the two Gods, a look to match the Thunder God's upon his fine, ivory features. 'Nanami is not going anywhere with you,' he growled through gritted teeth.

'Well you're quite welcome to go too, Tomoe,' she smiled, softening. She was still fond of the familiar that had rejected her so awfully. Eventually, they reached an agreement.

'Tomoe, I'm f-freezing!'

'I told you, you should have brought a coat.'

Nanami huffed silently. She never expected to be riding a cloud to Izumo. Narukami appeared comfortable but irritable as Tomoe ignored all of her attempts to converse with him.

'Why am I going to I-Izumo, anyway?' Nanami stuttered, her teeth clattering together with coldness. She met no reply and huffed to herself silently.

It was the second time Nanami had entered the conference hall and this time, she didn't feel as confident as the first time at all. Before, she had had that mysterious stranger encouraging and supporting her, but now she had a cranky God and a similarly cranky familiar as her entourage.

Unlike her first visit, the Gods seemed thoroughly sober and solemn, seated in an orderly fashion around the room. A large, pregnant silence followed Nanami and her heart beats sounded magnified, as loud as the beating of a drum as the tempo quickened. A delicate name card bearing Nanami's own name in elegant slanted writing ordered her to sit where the middle of the square-shaped room was clearly visible. She was glad to find that Tomoe's name was next to hers and Narukami was seated on the opposite side, far away from them. As soon as all of their seats were occupied, Ookuninushi drifted in the room gently with his trademark gentle smile.

'I'm sure you all know why I gathered you all here,' he whispered in his soft voice while teasing a strand of his hair from his forehead. Murmurs of assent and the ripple of hair as people nodded echoed around the room. Nanami whipped her head round, frowning confusedly. She turned to her right. Tomoe seemed just as confused as she was, but much less bothered by his lack of knowledge.

'Then let's go ahead with the agenda,' the handsome God smiled, peering up from under his long eyelashes. 'Item one.'

'Erm -' Nanami began.

'The de-humanising of –'

'E-excuse me –'

'Land God of Mikage Shrine, Momozono Nanami.'
