Chapter 30: Kamisama Hajimemashita

A/N: Reminder: Final chapter!

'I'm sure you all know why I gathered you all here,' he whispered in his soft voice while teasing a strand of his hair from his forehead. Murmurs of assent and the ripple of hair as people nodded echoed around the room. Nanami whipped her head round, frowning confusedly. She turned to her right. Tomoe seemed just as confused as she was, but much less bothered by his lack of knowledge.

'Then let's go ahead with the agenda,' the handsome God smiled, peering up from under his long eyelashes. 'Item one.'

'Erm -' Nanami began.

'The de-humanising of –'

'E-excuse me –'

'Land God of Mikage Shrine, Momozono Nanami.'

Continued from last chapter

'Sorry?' Nanami frowned.

'You didn't know?' Ookuninushi sighed quietly.

'Like hell did I know!' Nanami scowled. 'Why do you want me to be de-humanised or whatever?'

'Land God, calm down – '

'If I'm no longer human, how am I to see my friends or go to school? Why do I have to conform to your shallow opinions of a decent life form? I'm happy the way I am so screw your 'de-humanising' rubbish!'

Nanami stormed out the room. The Gods and their familiars began muttering away, filling the room with a buzzing like angry bees.

'Impertinent –'

'Selfish - '

Tomoe shook himself out of his state of shock and turned to glare at the room of furious Gods. Narukami seemed particularly smug, encouraging the drama, her eyes constantly flicking between Tomoe's irritated face and the war God's incensed expression.

'Quiet!' Ookuninushi pleaded, his tone at a normal level for once. 'This is most troublesome,' he sighed dramatically. 'Narukami, did you not warn her as I asked?'

The thunder God shrugged, barely bothering to hide her grin, 'I guess I forgot.'

Tomoe gave her a filthy look before leaving and slamming the door shut behind him.

Nanami was furious with herself. Why did she think it was a good idea to storm off to somewhere she wasn't even the closest bit familiar with? Was she that stupid?

She found herself strolling down deserted streets – streets that had no business being so clean. Everything about the area screamed 'inhuman' the same way they screamed 'perfect', because it was human nature to be imperfect.

She sat against a wall and held her knees up to her chest. She had said she didn't want to change but in all honesty, she hadn't even thought about it. She could be perfect if she did after all, talented, beautiful, intelligent, but what if she was completely de-humanised? What if she lost all sense of being Nanami? And would she be able to see her friends again? Not to mention that she wouldn't age, someone would notice that.

But… She could be with Tomoe forever.

As if on cue, her familiar stood over her.

'Oh, Tomoe, I don't know what to do…'

He didn't reply, just held her shaky gaze with his own steady golden one.

'I just want everything to sta-'

Tomoe silenced her by bending down, lifting her up bridal style and walking away, all tasks completed completely in mute.

'T-Tomoe!'

The familiar dropped her after a few minutes of silent wandering at the foot of a small building. It had four stands made from a pale stone, a square body with a humble wooden door for offerings and a small bright roof. It was barely taller and wider than Nanami but she immediately knew what it was.

'I-is that-?!'

'The parallel to Mikage Shrine. All of your divine power will be channelled to and from here. There's a shrine for each of the Gods here, but… Mikage's Shrine has never been this beautiful. You don't have to be some kind of powerful deity to perform all of your daily duties because look how much better this place has become.

'You, Nanami, are more than worthy of the title of the Land God. I am proud to call you my master.'

Tomoe bent down and kissed the deity's hand.

Because in the end, it didn't matter whether she was human or not. She had learned from Tomoe's mistakes: if he hadn't had attempted to change into a human, perhaps they would have been together much earlier, but Nanami didn't have to think about that now. He was happy, she was happy, and everyone back at the shrine was happy. And afterall, isn't that what's most important in life?
