Chapter 27: Should Be Back.
Cal tapped his pen against the pad. He looked at Sarah, who was sat on the bed, then back at the word written on his pad. Alice looked over his shoulder and her eyes widened slightly. She looked up into his bright blue eyes and she got lost for a second, before glancing over at Sarah, who was just as worried as they were.
"I'm not stupid," Sarah whispered, playing with the knife attached to her stump. "I'm pregnant, aren't I?"
"Yes," Alice squeaked. "We can deal with it though."
"We almost lost Ally," Sarah reminded her.
"Yes, almost," Cal butted in. "Every case is different."
"I can't do this...I'd be a bad mom," Sarah muttered, scratching her head.
"Hey, I may not have known you long, but from what I've seen you're good with children," Alice expressed and Cal nodded in agreement.
"Who would want me as a mom...I haven't got a hand-"
"You need to stop with this hand shit!" Cal snapped, and Alice's gaze snapped to his.
"Don't be so rude!" Alice barked.
Alice had noticed a change in Cal's behavior. His temper was on a short fuse at the moment and he seemed to snap at the littlest of things. Alice blamed it on all the blood he was taking from his body. He kept running test's just to see how far he could make his blood go.
"Sarah, we'll take it one step at a time...you can tell Dean when you're ready. It's early days, so you don't have to go telling everyone about it, okay?" Alice said and Sarah smiled at her.
"Okay," Sarah whimpered.
...
Harriet watched Lizzy run around on the grass with George. She could see it in her daughters eyes, that she was growing up way to fast for her age, but Harriet was glad, because at least she knew she could handle herself if things went bad. Lizzy had refused to tell Harriet anything about what had happened, whilst George and her were alone and it broke her heart that her daughter didn't want to tell her what had gone on.
Tess walked over and stood next to Harriet. She was cradling Erica in her arms, because Grace was off helping Lucas with something.
"You alright?" Tess asked.
"I'm fine...I guess," Harriet whispered.
"You can tell me what's wrong, I want tell a soul," Tess said.
"I suppose I can't really complain about having a hard life, because we all do. We're all stuck in a zombie infested world, we've all lost people, but sometimes I don't understand why we even bother...it's not like life is going to get any better for any of us. Losing faith in this world is way to easy and the only thing that's keeping me going is being surrounded by people that I care about, but then I remember that something may happen to any of you at any given time...it's scary and I wish I didn't think like that, because I've just got my daughter back...I should have faith, shouldn't I?"
"It's okay to think like that, but just remember that even in the normal world, we would all lose people, eventually we'd all lose people from a natural death or an illness. Life is life and it has a way of causing us heartbreak, but it just happens in different ways."
"I suppose your right," Harriet sighed.
"What you ladies talking about?" Julie asked, appearing at Harriet's side. Nathan was wrapped up in a bundle of blankets, sleeping soundly in her arms. Kyle came up behind her with Lexi in his arms. She was reaching up and grabbing onto Kyle's hair.
"Ow," Kyle groaned.
"Da...dada," Lexi gurgled.
"We were just talking about life," Tess said. "Nothing out of the ordinary."
"Do you think they're okay out there?" Harriet asked.
"They'll be back," Julie replied. "We'll always find our way back to each other somehow. We're one hell of a family, no can keep us apart."
"You're right..." Harriet sighed.
"Tess, Jasmine and Daniel were looking for you," Kyle said. "Something about a seed and an ear."
"I swear to the gods, if Jasmine has put another seed in Daniel's ear. I'm going to lose it," Tess marched off and back inside the prison.
Julie felt a chill rush up her spine and Kyle place his hand on her back.
"I don't know what it is...but I feel like we're being watch," Julie whispered.
"I know, I've been feeling like that lately, but Dallas is dead, we have nothing to worry about," Kyle explained and he kissed her forehead.
...
Trish sat down next to Dez at the table in the main room. He was acting different. Sarah had told her everything that had happened whilst they were alone together. She could see it in his eyes, something had changed inside of him. He didn't talk much, never cracked any jokes. He just wasn't acting normal anymore.
Trish looked away from his cold face and looked over at Frederick who was sat with his grandson, Tom in his lap. He'd taken him away from Mary so her and Elliot could get some alone time, which they both needed. He looked over at Trish and she flashed him a smile. When they'd escaped the farm together with Gregory. Trish had grown close to both of them. Frederick had needed help when it got colder, his bones were causing him pain from all the moving around and running. They'd found him a walking stick, but he refused to use it, stating that he was capable of walking on his own two feet.
Tess came marching out of the cell block, pulling Jasmine behind her, whilst carrying Erica in her arms. She made Jasmine sit down near Frederick at the table and Jasmine began to sulk.
"But, mommy-"
"I told you once not to do it!" Tess scolded. "You and your brother need some time apart, otherwise one of you is going to get seriously hurt with all of these ridiculous games you're coming up with," Tess explained and Erica began to cry in her arms and Grace suddenly appeared.
"Thank you for looking after her," Grace thanked her and she bundled her daughter in her arms and Lucas stepped up behind her and gently kissed her on the forehead.
"Are the generators still running smoothly?" Frederick asked.
"Yeah, they're fine," Lucas replied.
"Are they back from the run yet?" Grace asked.
"Not yet, it's been hours," Trish said. "It's been too long."
"They'll be fine, Wayne's with them," Lucas assured them.
"Wow, that's probably the nicest thing you've ever said about Wayne before," Grace giggled.
"Whatever," Lucas grumbled.
"Can I go play with Billy?" Jasmine asked her mom and she sighed.
"Yes, but don't stick a seed in Billy's ear," Tess said and Jasmine laughed running off to find Billy.
"You having trouble with them?" Grace asked.
"Yeah, they seem to be coming up with games and one of them gets hurt," Tess explained.
"Boredom probably," Fredrick said and patted Tom's head. "When Mary and Sarah were little they'd get bored whilst their mom and I were busy doing farm work. I found Sarah tangling upside down from a tree, a rope wrapped around her ankle and Mary was laughing at her. Apparently they were bored and Mary suggested that Sarah should dangle from a tree," Frederick chuckled at the memory of his little girls and they all smiled.
"I'm going to go to the watch tower," Dez muttered and he got up from his chair and left. Trish watched him leave, and when the door closed, she sighed.
"Has he said anything to you?" Lucas asked.
"No, that's the most I've heard him say in a while," Trish grumbled, resting her chin in her hand.
...
"Jess!" Nevil hissed and he grabbed her hand, pulling her away from the fence. They were around the back of the prison. There were some creepers close to the fence and Jess was trying to catch their attention, so she could stab the knife through the holes in the fence, to kill them.
"We need to kill them," Jess retorted.
"You've already been bitten once!" He snapped. "Do you want it to happen again!"
"Hey!" She stomped her foot on the dry grass and Nevil narrowed his eyes at her. "That's not fair, you can't always bring that up!"
"I can and I will! Do you want to die?!"
"Nevil!" She shrieked. "Shut up!"
"Are you two always like this?" Lizzy walked over with George right behind her, and they took a seat on the bench. "Arguing is not good."
"She's being an idiot," Nevil muttered.
"No, I'm not!" Jess pushed him back and Nevil fell backwards onto the grass. "Nevil...I'm sorry-"
"I don't want you to be my sister anymore!" Nevil shouted and he got to his feet, and took off running.
"Nevil!" Jess screamed and she chased after him.
Lizzy looked over at George and he grabbed her hand. They stared at the creepers on the other side of the fence. Lizzy felt a chill run up her spine and she remembered the time when she'd lost George for a while, back when they'd escaped from the farm.
Lizzy took in a staggering breath and she watched the creepers wandering out on the street. Her knee's were cut open and her arms were scratched up from the thorns in the woods. George and her had been running away from a small herd of creepers, when they'd got separated from each other.
Lizzy had ran into this small town and was hiding in one of the shops. She was scared, this was the first time she'd been alone without George. She missed her mommy, she missed Ally. She wondered if everyone she cared about was safe, but her main worry was where George was. She needed to find him.
She pulled her knife out from her small belt and she stared down at her lilac pumps. They were covered in blood and guts from all her killings. She hid behind one of the clothing racks and stared out of the window. She saw that the creepers were gone and she smirked.
Lizzy got to her shaking feet and slowly made her way over to the door. She opened it up, holding her knife up ready and she walked down the concrete path. She looked around, her eyes searching for any sign of movement. She stepped onto the grass near a park. And she heard a groaning sound.
She spun around and looked up at the fast approaching creeper. Her eyes widened and she took off running across the grass. Her foot got caught up in a fallen log and she fell forward. She scurried along the grass, her dirty pumps flying from her feet. Her cuts were pulsing and crying out in pain and she screamed, when the creeper grabbed a hold of her.
BANG!
Lizzy jumped and the creeper crumbled to the ground. She looked over her shoulder and saw George standing there, with his gun raised. He lowered it and Lizzy ran over, wrapping her arms around him. He hugged her back and she began to cry loudly into his chest.
"We need to go," He whispered and she looked at the creepers, which were making their way over. George grabbed her small hand and she wanted to go back for her pumps, but they didn't have time. So they took off running into the woods.
Lizzy looked over at George and she smiled at him. He looked over at her and a small blush found its way to his cheeks.
"George, are we gonna' be together forever?" She asked.
"Of course," George replied and Lizzy leaned over and planted a sweet kiss on his cheek.
...
Jess ran into her cell and onto the bunk. She brought her knees up to her chest and buried her face in the gap. She cried loudly her shoulders shaking from her sobs. She heard the creaking of someone walking along the metal walkway and she looked over to see it was Gregory. She'd never spoken to him before, but he had a friendly face.
He stopped at the cell entrance and he flashed her a friendly smile. Her bottom lip quivered and her salty tears plastered her lips. Gregory walked over and sat down at the edge of her bed.
"You okay, Jess isn't it?" He asked and she nodded her head. "What's wrong?"
"Nevil made me angry," She whimpered.
"What did he do?"
"He was telling me not to kill the creepers on the other side of the fence and he kept bringing up the time I got bitten," She explained and Gregory raised an eyebrow at her.
"Then what happened?"
"I pushed him and he ran off saying he didn't want me to be his sister anymore," She cried, burying her face back into the gap. Gregory reached over and placed his hand on her back. He seemed to find it easy to comfort younger children. There wasn't anyone around who was his age, the closest person was Ally, but she was a few years older than him and she was to grown up for her age and Gregory still had an immature streak through him. But before his sister died, whenever she cried he was always there to comfort her.
"I'm sure he didn't mean it," Gregory assured her.
"No, he looked at me the way Austin looked at Ally when they fell out, because she left...I've never had a brother before...I like Nevil...I love Nevil, but he doesn't love me," She blubbered.
"What do you mean?" Gregory pushed.
"I got so angry with him, because I overheard him telling Billy that he doesn't love me...He laughed and said he didn't love me...we were meant to be partners in crime...we'd find bundles of blankets and sleep in my bed. He always tries to cheer me up when I'm sad, just like brothers are meant to do...but he doesn't love me..."
"Jess, sweetheart. I'm sure that's not true. Give Nevil some time to calm down and then you two should sit down and talk," Gregory suggested.
"What if he doesn't want to talk to me ever again...I want my mommy," She cried.
"Ally's not back yet-"
"MOMMY!" She shrieked and she began to rock backwards and forwards.
"Jess, calm down," He hushed her and her cries grew louder.
"I WANT MY MOMMY!"
"Jess, c'mon it will be alright," She stuck her fingers in her ears.
"MOMMY! MOMMY! MOMMY!" She screamed and Gregory looked over his shoulder and he saw Nevil standing there. His eyes were red and he had a huge blanket wrapped around his shoulders.
"Jess," Gregory whispered and he pulled her fingers out of her ears. "Look," She brought her head from her lap and she looked over at the entrance to her cell.
"Nevil," She whimpered and Gregory got off her bed and he left Jess's cell. Nevil stood still and looked at Jess's tear stained face.
He slowly moved his feet and he climbed onto her bed and crawled up it, until he was next to her. He lent against the wall and Jess joined him. He pulled open his blanket and Jess bundled herself up in it and he wrapped it tight around them.
They sat in silence and Jess snuggled herself into his side. Tears slowly fell from her eyes and she soon realized that Nevil had been crying too. She sniffled rubbing her nose with the back of her hand. The warmth in the bundle of the fluffy blanket was making Jess relax. She still wanted Ally though.
"I heard what you said, you don't love me," She whispered.
"Billy was teasing me...saying that I was going to get cooties if I kept holding your hand...and he said that I loved you, and I told him that he loved Jasmine, then he said he didn't so I said I didn't love you."
"Did you mean it?"
"No...your my best friend," He said and she smiled against his side.
"Your my best friend too," She replied. "Can we still be brother and sister?"
"Yeah...I didn't mean what I said, I know I made you angry," He mumbled. "I just don't want you to get hurt."
"I'm sorry for pushing you," She whispered and then she sat up straight and kissed his cheek.
"It's okay," He blushed and Jess returned to hugging his side and they slowly lay down on the bed, bundled in the fluffy blanket.
...
Lucas stood by the basketball court and he watched Roxana and Derek playing with Billy. He smiled and turned away, his eyes glancing across the sunset. He was worried, they'd been gone for too long and he had a feeling that something wasn't right.
Julie walked up next to him, Nathan in her arms. She was holding a bottle in his mouth and she looked around, worry in her eyes.
"He's missing his mommy and daddy," She whispered and she kissed Nathan's head.
"They should be back by now," Lucas said.
"W-What do we do if they aren't?" She stammered. "What about Nathan?"
"Don't worry, they'll be back."
"And Wayne, god not Wayne, Harriet's only just got him back and she's finally happy," Julie rambled on. "W-What do we do!"
"Julie, clam down," He said. "You need to stop worrying-"
The rumbling sound of an engine filled their ears. Roxana, Derek and Billy stopped playing and made their way over to the fence. By the guard tower Dez walked out and opened up the front gate and the truck sped up the dirt path and Lucas pulled open the other gate and the truck skidded to a halt.
Lucas smiled at Julie, then he suddenly realized something. There was only one person in the truck. Ronny stepped out, he was covered in blood and guts from head to toe, and he was looking around with wild eyes. Roxana ran over and she began to check him for bites, or scratches.
The rest of them ran over and Ronny's chest was heaving for air. He had a death grip on his blood tainted knife and rubbed at the cut on the side of his face.
"Where are the rest of them!?" Julie asked in a panic.
"These people came...w-we ran and when we got outside we realized A-Ally wasn't there. A-Austin ran back inside to find her, then more people came, they started firing at us. W-We got separated and I was running around the back of the mall...I s-saw Ally on the floor...a-a c-creeper...I couldn't d-do a-anything, more creepers came and I ran off. I-I couldn't find any of t-them."
AN: Don't kill me! I'm already halfway through the next chapter, I think I'll finish it tonight. So, I think we needed to check in on the other characters and next chapter we'll return to Austin and Ally. So, Sarah's pregnant, thoughts? I think it's way to obvious that Alice has the hot's for Cal. I also hope you like the scenes between Nevil and Jess, and I hope you like the flashback of what happened to Lizzy to make her lose her pumps.
I hope you all drop me a review I love to hear from you :)
