Chapter 47: She's Worth Saving.

Austin had his foot slammed down on the accelerator. He was going as fast as he could, but it wasn't fast enough. Ally was bleeding out on the backseat. Gregory was slummed against the passenger door. Jaime was in the bed of the truck, crying her eyes out over her dad's lifeless body.

Rain poured down, and Austin couldn't see a single thing out in front of him. His eyes were stinging with tears, and it was making his eyesight fuzzy. He remembered the words Jaime had said to him through her sobs. Pregnant, she's pregnant.

He swerved onto the dirt road, and the engine cried for Austin to stop, but he couldn't stop. He just couldn't. He screeched to a halt in front of the farmhouse. Everyone was waiting on the porch, with guns and knives, ready to leave. Austin realized that Kira must have told them all that they had left.

Austin flew out of the door, and opened up the door to the backseat. He pulled Ally's cold body into his arms.

"HELP!" He cried out, and they all ran towards the truck.

"Has she been bit?" Cal asked, urgently. Austin nodded his head furiously, and Cal took off into the farmhouse, and Austin scrambled behind him.

They ran into one of the bedrooms, and Austin put her down on the bed. "P-Please tell me you can save her, please," He begged, a whimper falling from his lips. He pulled at his hair, and fell to his knees by the bed.

Cal didn't reply. He left the room for a few seconds, then returned with blood bags in his hands. He pulled this strange pump contraption out from under the bed, and pulled some needles out of a draw. Austin's head fell against the bed, and his fingers curled around the bloodstained bedsheets.

He could hear a loud uproar coming from the other rooms, and he knew everyone else was dealing with Wayne and Gregory. But, he didn't care right now…he only cared about her.

"S-She's pregnant," He brought his head up from the bed, and ran his hands over his face.

Cal glanced at him, then he stuck a needle into her arm, then attached the tube that was a part of the device to the crook of her arm. He squeezed the blood bags into the glass jar, and the blood was pumped through the tube, and into her body.

Cal moved to the side of the bed where Austin was kneeling, and he sat down on the bed. "I need to stitch her neck up."

"Is she going to be okay," He croaked, and Cal sighed. "Please, tell me the truth."

"I don't know. When I did it to Jess, it was about an hour after she had been bitten, and she survived…we're just going to have to wait," He explained.

"W-What about the baby?" He asked, burying his face into his hands.

Cal began to stitch up the wound at her neck, and he glanced down her body. "There isn't any sign of bleeding down there, so at the moment, there's no sign of a miscarriage…again, we're just going to have to wait. I'm sorry I don't have more answers to give you."

Austin reached out his trembling hand, and grabbed her cold one. Her skin was pure white against his tanned ones, and he brought her hand to his mouth, kissing it. Then, he rested his forehead against the back of her hand, and prayed silently.

The door creaked open, and they both looked over to see Alice standing there. She shut the door behind her, and made her way over to the bed. She crouched down by the glass jar, that was pumping blood into Ally's body, then she checked her pulse. Alice looked over at Austin, and flashed him a weak smile.

"What's happening out there?" Cal asked, and Alice sighed.

"It's hard to say…" Alice rubbed her tired eyes, and she moved her fingers from Ally's wrist. "She still has a pulse," Her eyes landed on Austin's. "That's a good sign."

She got to her feet, and left the room to return to the chaos. Austin eyes fell on Ally's pale face. There was a sheen of sweat on her forehead, and her face was tight in pain. Cal covered the wound on her neck with white, cotton padding, and taped the edges down.

He moved to the other side of the bed to check how much blood was going in, then he began to exam her body. Austin watched him carefully, as he pressed down gently on her stomach. He felt bile rise in the back of his throat, and Cal watched him pale.

Austin rushed over to the bucket in the corner of the bedroom, and threw up the content of his stomach. He dry heaved for a few minutes, then he felt someone's hand on his shoulder. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, then looked up to see his mom standing there with some water.

"Drink," She ordered, and he took the water from her and drank it. Austin returned to Ally's bedside, and sunk down onto his knees. "How is she?"

"We don't know yet," Cal spoke up. "We just need to wait."

A rumble of thunder cracked through the night air, then a flash of lightening followed afterwards. Austin's mind flew to the kids.

"They're fine," Mimi said, able to read her son. "Mary and Sarah are looking after them all in one of the cabins…they don't know yet."

"They don't need to know unless the worst happens," Cal said.

A loud scream echoed around, and Austin recognized Jaime's voice. She was screaming and shouting at someone. A gunshot followed after, and Austin managed to get himself to his feet, and he walked out into the hall. He saw a gunshot hole in one of the walls in the lounge, then he saw Jaime on top of his dad, pounding her fists against his face.

"Mike!" Mimi screamed, and Austin wrapped an arm around Jaime's waist, pulling her off his dad. She thrashed wildly, then cried out.

"Calm down!" Austin snapped, and she whimpered, then collapsed into his arms.

"What the hell is going on!?" Lucas yelled, walking into the room. The front of his shirt was covered in blood, and Austin could see the sweat along his forehead from rushing around.

"Bastard!" Jaime hollered, and she began to thrash again in Austin's arms. "He said we should just let him die! HE'S MY FUCKIN' DAD!"

"JAIME!" Austin's voice boomed, and she flinched. Jaime finally stopped moving, and relaxed. Her body fell against his chest, and her bottom lip began to shake.

"We do whatever we can to keep our people alive!" Lucas snapped. "I've had enough of your bullshit, either change your attitude or leave!"

Austin glanced at his parents, then he guided Jaime into the room Ally was in. He lowered her down to the floor by Ally's bedside, and she wiped her tears from her cut face. Jaime looked over at Ally's form on the bed, then she glanced at Cal.

"Is she going to be okay?" She asked.

"We don't know yet," Cal replied. "Let me have a look at your face."

"N-No," She shook her head frantically. "You need to look after Ally."

Cal walked around the bed, and sat down next to her. "It's a waiting game at the moment. I think I have time to stitch up your face," He pulled out a needle and thread, then began to get to work on the cut on her face.

"Your dad's a dick," Jaime growled.

"I know," Austin grumbled back, and he grabbed Ally's hand.

"I-I need to go and see if my dad's okay, and Gregory," Jaime waited for Cal to finish stitching her up, then she fled the room.

Austin looked back at Ally, then stroked his hand up her arm. He pressed his fingers against her wrist, and felt the rhythm of her pulse beneath his fingertips. He watched as her fingers twitched slightly, and a small smile appeared on his face.

He moved from the floor, and sat on the bed. He reached out and brushed the strands of hair from her face, and tucked them behind her ear. Alice walked into the room with a bowl of water, and a cloth. She placed it down on the bedside table, and handed him the cloth. Austin nodded in thanks, and dipped the cloth into the water. He twisted the excess water out, then wiped the damp cloth across her forehead.

He cleaned the blood from her face, then carefully washed her neck. He knew that it was going to leave a nasty scar, but if she survived he knew she wouldn't mind. His heart was still pounding furiously in his chest, but he knew he needed to stay calm.

He lent down, and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. He kept his lips there for a few seconds, then rested his forehead against hers. He reached up and cupped her cheek.

"You're going to be okay," He whispered. "I know it…because, I can't do this without you."

The door opened, and Austin heard the cry. His eyes flew to the door, and Jess, Nevil, and Billy were standing there. Nathan was in Billy's arms, and Austin flew off the bed when Jess bolted towards him.

"MOMMY!" She cried, and Austin lifted her wriggling body into his arms.

"W-What happened?" Nevil whimpered, rubbing his eyes.

"MOMMY!" Jess screeched, and Austin held her tighter.

"Jess, I need you to calm down," He whispered by her ear, and she whimpered, burying her face into his neck.

"Is she going to be okay?" Billy asked, and Nathan began to cry in his arms.

Austin sat down on the floor, and cradled Jess in his lap. He gestured for the others to come and sit down around him. Billy sat down on his right, and sat Nathan up in his lap. Nevil sat on his left and reached out to hold Jess's hand.

"She was bitten," Austin said, and Jess sobbed into his chest.

"Can Cal fix him like he did Jess?" Nevil asked, and he looked over at Cal, who was standing by the window.

"He's going to try," Austin explained. "We just need to wait."

Nathan hiccupped, and reached out his tiny arms for Austin. He swiped Nathan from Billy's lap, and rested him next to Jess. Billy and Nevil moved into his side and gripped onto his shirt. Austin stared down at them all, then he placed a kiss to Jess's head.

"Can we stay?" Billy asked.

"Sure."

They stayed by Ally's bedside for hours. The kids all fell asleep, leaning against Austin, but he never went to sleep, and neither did Cal. Austin glanced over at the window, and saw daylight seeping through the curtains. Cal moved from the window, and began to check Ally over.

The door opened and Derek walked in. He glanced over at Ally's form on the bed, then walked over to his son, and pulled his sleeping form into his lap.

"How is everyone?" Austin asked, his voice rough.

"Wayne is stable at the moment, but he hasn't woken up…Frederick and Alice have been performing surgery on Gregory for the past three hours. The bullet splintered in his chest, so they need to get the fragments out," He explained.

"It's so quiet," Austin said.

"Everyone's asleep in here. No one went back to their cabins. Jaime, Harriet and Lizzy are asleep in Wayne's room. There are some others sleeping in the other spare rooms, then the rest are on the couches and floor…is she going to be okay?"

"Her pulse is stable," Cal spoke up, and Austin looked over his shoulder at him. Cal was removing the tube from her arm. "And there are still no signs of a miscarriage."

"Miscarriage, she's pregnant?" Derek asked, and Austin nodded his head. "Oh."

"She hasn't turned. Her vitals are stable, so that's a good sign. We just need to hope she wakes up," Cal explained.

"Thank you," Austin whispered.

"It's fine. She's worth saving," Cal replied. "I'll be back in a bit. I'm just going to check on everyone else."

Austin watched Cal leave, then he stared down at the kids. They were all sleeping peacefully, and he couldn't believe that he was here now. Back in his old life, this wouldn't have been what he pictured for his future. But, he liked this future much better. He wouldn't change it for the world.

A groan sliced through the air, and Austin looked over his shoulder. His heart leaped in his chest, and he watched Ally's body shift. Her head rolled to the side, and he watched her eyes moved behind her lids.

Austin moved, and it jostled the kids awake. Nathan latched onto his shirt, and Austin bundled him against his chest. They all climbed onto the bed, and watched as Ally began to stir. Jess reached out and nudged her with her hands.

"Mommy, wake up," She whimpered. "Mommy…"

Ally's head moved again, and her mouth parted, taking in a sharp breath of air. Her eyelids twitched, and they slowly began to open. Her eyes were glazed with wetness, and she stared up at the ceiling for a while.

"Mommy," Nevil said, and Ally's eyes slowly moved to look at them. A sob tore from her lips, and the kids all lunged for her, wrapping their arms around her body.

"Mommy, you're awake," Jess squeaked, and she nuzzled her face against her stomach. Tears fell from Ally's eyes, and she looked at Austin. He reached out and grabbed her hand, and Ally latched on for dear life.

Cal walked back into the room, and a smile grew on his face when he saw Ally awake on the bed. "Maybe you should give her some space."

"How about we go and get something to eat?" Derek suggested. "We can come back and see her once we're done."

They all got off Ally, and Derek took Nathan from Austin. They quickly left the room, and Cal followed behind them. Austin's eyes landed on Ally's, and he felt tears burn at his eyes.

"I-I'm alive," She whimpered, and Austin nodded his head. She moved to sit up, so Austin helped her. She clung onto the front of his shirt, then wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her face into the crook of his neck.

"Yes…you're alive. Thank god."
