CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR
UNDERCOVER
I go back to check on Rikki but she's gone. I take it since my ring isn't glowing blue and she isn't sitting on the floor in a depressing heap that she's gone back to the dorm ... with my cardigan. Damn. It's really cold tonight. You would think with all the magic here that the hallways would be warmer but no. Maybe it's to put us off wandering through the hallways after curfew. Oh well.
Assuming Caleb isn't walking the baltic hallways at night, I go straight down to one of my least favourite places in the whole school, the whole world. The Slytherin Common Rooms.
Now I know the Slytherins aren't all bad people. Emphasis on all. But that doesn't change the fact that their Common Room is one of the dankest, darkest, most miserable places I've ever been. I've been in it a few times with Al and our family.
I stand outside the dorm for about 10 minutes, shivering worse than I had upstairs, until the wall slides open and out steps ...
"Lily, darling, what are you doing here? Visiting Loverboy?" Drawls Hailey Frockler in a fake-nice voice. In her eyes sparks intruige, but I'm not giving any information to her.
"That's none of your business Frockler." I smile back sweetly.
"Now, now, Sweetie, watch that big mouth of yours. It might get you into trouble one day. I'm only asking because I'm worried about you. I heard you had a little lover's tiff." She informs me. My inside's heat up. How dare she! How can she say that and expect to get away with it? And more importantly, how did she even know that?
I stand there, my mouth opening and closing in anger, trying to figure out what to say, and she smiles.
"I've told you before, Lily Darling, that I know everything about your family. I have spies remember. Did you forget? I know everything, and I know it before you do." She hisses, the stupid smile still plastered on her face. I shake my head.
"No you're just guessing. Because the only-" I cut myself off, cursing my slip-up. I basically told her she was right. I cut myself short but she knows what I was going to say.
"Because the only people who know about that ... are your family." She smirks. I raise my hand to slap her but she grabs it in mid-air, digging her sharp nails into my wrist. Her right hand comes up, quicker than I can blink, and slaps me across the face. It stings but I'm too angry to really feel it. "Don't ever try that again, Little Girl." She spits. Then she drops my hand, holds the stone door open for me and - when I reluctantly turn my back on her and walk into the Common Room - leaves.
I walk down and spot Caleb sitting on the black, leather sofa, book in hand. He looks up and his violet eyes catch my brown ones. Between registering what Hailey actually implied and feeling the tingling slap on my cheek, tears have started to well up in my eyes. He notices, of course.
"Lily?" He says, standing up. Most of the people in the room turn to look at me with interest, minus a few. He walks up to me swiftly, dropping his book on the floor, grabs my hand and leads me up the stairs.
I've never been in the boy's dorms before, not even my own House's. They are nicer than I expected, not as dank as the common room. All green and silver, and a lot warmer than the hallways. It's empty except for us. I can tell my brother's bed from the mess and the Quidditch posters and a picture of Him, James and I on the bedside table. The bed in the corner is the neatest, most perfectly in-order bed I've ever seen. It looks like it's never been slept in. I can only assume, from Al's description, that it belongs to Scorpius Malfoy. Caleb's bed is the nearest to the door and his bedside table is covered in pictures of his family and one of us that is now also in my locket.
Caleb sits me down on the end of his bed, kneels down in front of me and touches my cheek gently.
"Someone slapped you." He observes quietly. Anger blazes behind his eyes and I smile softly, shrugging.
"I know." I whisper hoarsely, wiping my eyes, "But that doesn't matter. It's not why I came. I'm here to say sorry. I was a bad girlfriend and I kn-" He cuts me off, cradling my face in his hands.
"Brown-eyes, what are you talking about?" He says, looking genuinely confused. This makes me smile. Of course he's not mad. He's Caleb. All day I've been worrying about what I did, if he hated me, and it turns out he's fine with it. He understands. I've been expecting some dramatic break-up fight and what do I get? Sympathy. Merlin, I love him.
"I made you leave. But I was just upset about Al and I'm really, really-" He cuts me off again my covering my lips with his. He kisses me softly and pulls away, grinning widely.
"Silly Lily. I know. I understood, I was never mad at you. You were worried about Al, it was probably right of you to send me away. He hates me. I didn't belong there." He tells me. Before I can stop myself, the words slip out.
"You belong with me." I duck my head and stare at the ground wide-eyed. God, why did I say that. I'm so stupid. Caleb tilts my head up towards him and stares into my eyes. I blush, making my red cheek red-er. There's a long pause.
"I know." He whispers and kisses me again. Then he pulls away frowning, "Which is why you should tell me who hit you." I sigh, resting my forehead against his.
"I bumped into Hailey-fucking-Frockler on the way in. We had a fight. She said - She said that my family are her spies or something. I tried to hit her. She blocked it." I say, showing him my red wrist. He looks so mad.
"This - is just - I mean - she's such a cow! Merlin, if she wasn't a girl, so help me-" I splutters in rage. I look up at him hoplessly.
"You don't think ... Caleb, you don't think she was telling the truth? You don't think ... my family ...?" I ask him. He looks at me as if debating whether or not to tell the truth. But I know Caleb would never lie to me. Finally he frowns.
"I think, whilst Hailey Frockler is a horrible, manipulative little liar, that I can't think of any other possibilities. I don't want to believe it. But - can I ask you a question?"
"Shoot." I smile sadly.
"Why have't you reported her to McGonagal yet?" He asks. I splutter. I wasn't expecting this question and it throws me off guard.
"We all agreed not to."
"You didn't all agree, Lil. There was a vote, I was there. So we can only assume that the people who are on her side - if it's true! - voted against turning her in." Deduces my genius boyfriend. I feel my heart deflate.
"Roxie and Fred, Louis ... James -" I start.
"- And Albus." Finishes Caleb, then continues, "But we can rule out Albus and Louis because she wrote false articles about both of them." I sigh so deeply that Caleb gives me a strange look, "You know who it is, don't you?"
"It's James. James is the spy." I mutter, throwing my head into my hands, "Now all we need to work out is why."
There you have it! Lily Thinks James is the spy. Did you expect that? And isn't Caleb the LOVLIEST, MOST FORGIVING boyfriend in the world?
Okay so here's the IMPORTANT bit - As you all know (if you bother reading my blabby bit) I have wrote this story in a way that all of the family have a story to tell. I have recently started writing ROSE'S PERSPECTIVE. You don't have to read it, though it might reveal more about this story than Lily knows and I'm actually really proud of it. I was just wondering if, Since you all know Rose's secrect now, any of you would read it and if you think I should upload the first chapter.
