Zach POV
Liz! I gripped the wheel very tightly and steered aimlessly to the right, I wasn't thinking. The van, our only escape from the Circle and police, crashed into a near by lamp post. The air bag ejected and the whole vehicle felt like it was going to smash.
I pushed down the air bag frantically and checked Cammie and Alexa, they were okay. Alexa had a cut on her head but I couldn't remember if that had been there before.
"You okay?" She asked Cammie and me. Cammie nodded.
"Fine." I swallowed and kicked open the door, the glass was smashed. I jumped out and ran to Liz, who was soaked in blood. The van had bent in at the from with the force of the crash, the lamp post actually looked okay, from where I stood anyway.
"Liz." I said and crouched down beside the girl. She didn't respond. With a panic I shook her shoulders, her eye lids flickered. I breathed out shakily and checked her pulse, it was fine. Then I checked where she was hurt. "Oh god..." I said to myself and tore the bottom of my shirt off so I could bandage the bullet wound in her stomach, to put pressure on it and stop the bleeding. Seth jumped out the back of the van.
"Zach, we have to go." He said.
"She needs a hospital." I said and picked her up. "Now." Seth swore.
"Help me." I said. He came and took Liz's legs. Sirens could be heard in the distance. We hurried to get Liz in the back, Anna and dad took her.
"What is it?" Dad asked me.
"Bullet wound, I've tried to stop the blood." I said straight away.
"Will the van work?" Alexa climbed out the side of the van, coughing.
"I think so." I said, praying that it would. I climbed back in and tried the engines. Nothing happened.
"Let me." Cammie lifted her leg and kicked the gear box, it started up. I smiled.
"That's my girl." Alexa make a gagging sound and we reversed slowly out of the lamp post and onto the street, rolling over bits of broken glass from the smashed van windows as we did.
"Will she be okay?" Alexa asked into the back.
"If we get her to the hospital!" Anna called back to us. We pulled off back onto the road with a bone churning clunk. I clenched my teeth together and thought fast about the nearest hospital, there was one not 5 minutes from where we were now.
"Hold on!" I called and did a 360 turn in the middle of the street, making dust and gravel fly about. I put the van back into drive and shot off down the road with a fast tap, tap, tap as part of the van dragged along the floor.
"She's loosing a lot of blood." Seth said from the back, I saw Cammie start to cry. I couldn't think of anything comforting to say. Police sirens started up again as they came into view in the wing mirror. Alexa swore and elbowed her window till it smashed, no point being careful now. Regardless of the blood coming from the slit in her right elbow she pointed the gun behind us and fired aimlessly. The cars swerved off the road.
"Remind me never to get on the wrong side of you." I joked, she smiled but it seemed very forced.
"Just doing what I was taught." She said. "The hospitals dead ahead!" Alexa pointed to it's glowing sign, it felt like the gates to heaven.
"Zach!" Anna yelled to me. "She, I can't feel a pulse!" Without a second thought for the entrance I crashed the van through one of the neatly trimmed hedges and parked lopsided in 3 parking spaces.
"Get her out! Alexa, Seth, keep watch!" I jumped out the van with Cammie by my side, not waiting for either of their replies. We swung open the back to a terrified Anna, her arms around Liz. "Hurry." I breathed. Dad, Cammie and Anna took Liz and I lead the way. Seth gave me a nod, I didn't return it. It wasn't the time to be friendly.
"She's not breathing Zach!" Cammie cried to me as I pushed open the hospital doors with my bloody hand, everyone stared.
"We need help now!" I yelled, people hurried about. The first doctor that came to us was a tall, fashionable woman with died white hair.
"What seems to be the problem?" She put Liz on a stretcher.
"There was a shooting-" I panted. "At our school, she was hit-" I couldn't finish. She nodded and gave Liz over to two men and they took her away.
"We'll do our best young man." She said in an ice cold tone. "We'll need one of you for questioning though, she should have come when the rest of the injured did."
"She escaped the school." Anna blurted. "We found her passed out in the road."
"If that is the case then you should have been taken in as well." She glared at Cammie's shoulder. "And you, I'll get you some care as well." Cammie opened her mouth to protest.
"Thank you." I said hurriedly and looked at her. "Cam, go." She didn't move. "Cam!" I yelled, she walked off with the woman doctor.
"Zach, are you okay?" Anna asked in a small, uncertain voice." I was sweating.
"Fine." I snapped, making her jump. I wiped my palms on my worn out jeans. I tasted blood in my mouth.
"Zach!" Anna yelled to me, just before everything went black and I passed out.
