Chapter 13: Kýrie Eléison

T.K.

My Digivice beeped, so I switched it to normal mode and answered it. "This is T.K. What's up?" "Takeru! This is Commander Sampson." I snapped to attention and saluted, even though he wasn't in the room. "Commander Sampson, sir!" "Very good. We've been monitoring Melbourne and we've spotted some unusual Digimon activity by St. Peter's Cathedral. Would you care to make a guess as to what kind of Digimon might be at a cathedral?" I thought hard about it, and it started coming to me. "A demon," I gulped. "Correct. In this case, it's led by Devimon." "Oh no," I groaned. My mind flashed back to the first time Angemon fought, all those years ago.

Angemon punches forward and a bright energy beam shoots through Devimon and across the island. A light sphere surrounds the island, as a force of evil is about to be vanquished. Devimon slowly disappears into purple energy from the feet up, but still has time to taunt his enemy. "You've used up all your power! That wasn't very smart, Angemon. Now you are no use to anyone! You can't get away from the dark forces!" Angemon too slowly disappears into white energy from his ankles. Devimon continues, "Evil is everywhere, so don't savor your victory. There are other Digimon that are just as powerful as I am, some of them are even stronger. I wonder what you'll do when you run into them. You haven't won at all! What a waste of time!" He laughs maniacally as he disappears completely, and soon, Angemon starts to disappear from his waist up. "Angemon!" T.K. calls. The angel Digimon turns to his partner. "T.K...I'll come back again...if you want me to..." Tears well up in the young boy's eyes, as Angemon disappears into white energy as the island loses its shine.

"ANGEMON!" T.K. screams out as he goes all fours, crying. Seven snow white feathers fall to the ground before him.

T.K.

"T.K... what's wrong?" Patamon asked. I just stood there, silently thinking about it. Then, I gave my answer to the commander. "I'll do it." "Good," the commander replied, "Why don't you ask Hikari and Yamato to go with you? I've already dispatched Naomi and Charisse." "Yeah, that would be good. Thanks, Commander." "You're welcome. Now forwarding the coordinates to you."

I called Kari and Matt on my Digivice, but they'd already gotten the message. Both my room and Kari's room had Juliette balconies, so I locked my room door, then opened the window. "OK. Move out into position," I quietly instructed. My partner flew out into the sky, where he had plenty of space. "Time to rock, Patamon!" I selected the DigiEgg of Hope option from my Digivice, then pressed the OK button and posed. "DigiArmor Energize!"

"Patamon Armor Digivolve to... Pegasusmon, Flying Hope!" I made my way out to the balcony's small space and crawled over the fence to board my partner. It wasn't easy to do.

Matt

While T.K. and Kari got to fly over there, I had to figure out how to get there by land. That meant going past the front desk clerk. Luckily, Greg was there to help me out, as he'd just mastered The Carlton Dance.

["It's Not Unusual"

Written by Les Reed and Gordon Mills

Performed by Tom Jones]

Greg brings out his laptop and hooks it up to the lobby sound system (with the management's permission of course; I mean, who's going to say no to him?). He then goes to YouTube and searches for Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual". He then presses play, then clears out a spot and starts dancing The Carlton Dance, bouncing off of the furniture.

It's not unusual to be loved by anyone
It's not unusual to have fun with anyone
But when I see you hanging about with anyone
It's not unusual to see me cry, I wanna die

According to the Radio Times and Alfonso Ribiero, it's important to know you don't need rhythm. Just an ability to "separate your body parts". It's all about the step and touch, step and touch – "with no weight on [your foot]" . Then you've got to swing your arms and really let them go while working those hips. Courtney Cox presumably did a similar dance in her appearance in Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark" video.

It's not unusual to go out at any time
But when I see you out and about it's such a crime
If you should ever want to be loved by anyone
It's not unusual, it happens every day, no matter what you say

You'll find it happens all the time
Love will never do what you want it to
Why can't this crazy love be mine?

Greg continues, and provides a great distraction while Matt silently nods and puts on his shades. Then, he walks out the door, cool as a cucumber and glad he didn't have to stoop to that level. People take pictures and video of the dance with their phones. We cut to inside the Digivice to find Veemon doing the same dance for the first two lines, and then go back out to the hotel lobby .

It's not unusual to be mad with anyone
It's not unusual to be sad with anyone
But if I ever find that you've changed at any time
It's not unusual to find out I'm in love with you

whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, etc.

One of the biggest mistakes people make according to Alfonso is this: "The biggest mistake is that [people] don't understand…they don't know what the dance is….the arms lead the body, then they always try to follow the arms. They just get it wrong." - ["The History Of The Carlton Dance As Told By The Legend Himself, Alfonso Ribeiro"; Leonora Epstein, Buzzfeed] As the song finishes, Greg ends up falling into a chair, exhausted and spent. "Who wants autographs?" he calls, and sure enough, some people do approach him.

Matt

I went into a back alley, where I suited up, then brought out my partner. "Gabumon, realize!" He came out of his Digivice, and I ignited my DigiSoul. "Ready?" Gabumon nodded, and I got into position. "DigiSoul... charge!" "Gabumon Digivolve to... Garurumon!" I mounted my Digimon, and we rode on, trying to avoid traffic while still getting a good look at all those old buildings. We finally arrived at the cathedral, where I spotted T.K. and Kari. I brought Garurumon back into my Digivice after I dismounted him, and we went inside.

Waiting for us in the chapel were Naomi and Charisse. "Glad you guys could make it," the African-American-Japanese girl greeted us. "We came as soon as we could. What's the trouble?" Kari asked. Naomi explained. "According to what Commander Sampson told us, the demon Digimon arrived yesterday and took over the sanctuary." "Great. The one place of safety in a church, taken over by demons," T.K. groaned as he slumped into the bench. "It could be worse. The whole cathedral could be taken over," Charisse noted.

Kari sat beside her best friend and tried to comfort him. "I heard from them, too. It sounds like Devimon is our next opponent. We're going to get through this, T.K. I just know we are. After all, we've got something the others don't." "What?" She giggled. "Silly, have you forgotten already? Our crests. We have the two most powerful crests in the entire Digital World, and I'm going to need you to protect me." "Kari..." "I mean it. Once we enter that sanctuary, it's going to be an all out war. This'll be one of the biggest battles we've faced, but we're going to do it together." She gently grabbed T.K.'s hand and squeezed it. "Someday, it won't be like this."

As if on cue, Naomi approached the organ and began to play.

["Someday"

Written by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz

Performed by PurityxWolves (Kari Kamiya [Lara Jill Miller], Yamato "Matt" Ishida [Michael Reisz], Charisse Matthews [Gina Bowes], Naomi Honda [Christine Marie Cabanos], Takeru "T.K." Takaishi [Michael Cunio])]

Charisse and Matt join the two friends/lovebirds as Kari brings her beacon of light to cheer T.K.'s troubled soul.

Kari:

Someday
When we are wiser
When the world's older
When we have learned
I pray
Someday we may yet live
To live and let live

Charisse:

Someday
Life will be fairer
Need will be rarer
And greed will not pay

Kari/Charisse:

God speed

Kari:

This bright millennium

Kari/Charisse:

On its way

Kari:

Let it come, someday

Matt realizes the potential, and cashes it in for all it's worth.

Matt:

Someday
Our fight will be won then
We'll stand in the sun then
That bright afternoon

Kari/Charisse/Matt:

'Till then
On days when the sun is gone
We'll hang on

Matt:

And we'll wish upon the moon, whoa

Naomi:

There are some days dark and bitter (Kari/Charisse/Matt: dark and bitter)
Seems we haven't got a prayer

Matt:

But a prayer for something better
Is the one thing we all share

Suddenly, T.K. feels inspired and well enough to join in the chorus, as his voice joins those of the others in this "hymn".

Naomi/Kari/Charisse/T.K.:

Someday (Matt: Some, someday)
When we are wiser (
Matt: When we are wiser)
When the world's older (
Matt: When the world is older)
When we have learned (
Matt: When we have learned)
I pray
Someday we may yet live (
Matt: Let live, let live)
To live and let live (
Matt: To live, to live, to live, to live, and let live)

Kari motions for Matt to cut out the vocal gymnastics. After all, this is a church.

T.K./Naomi/Kari/Charisse/Matt:

Someday
Life will be fairer
Need will be rarer
Greed will not pay
God speed
This bright millennium
Let it come

Matt:
Wish upon the moon

Naomi/Kari/Charisse/Matt/T.K.:
One day
Someday

Kari:
Soon

Naomi beautifully closes the song on the organ.

T.K.

I let out a faint smile. "Thanks, guys. I appreciate that," I sincerely said. The others just smiled, and Charisse came up with a suggestion. "You know, that worked out really well. Why don't we get our bands together in the studio sometime and record this for a charity single?" "Sounds like a plan to me," Matt said.

Kari, Matt, and I brought out our Digimon. "That was beautiful, Kari," Gatomon commented. "Thanks." "But what are we sitting in here chattering for? Let's kick some demon butt!" Patamon cheered. I nodded, and led the charge as bravely as I could at the moment.

We approached the entrance to the sanctuary. "Scared, Kari?" I quickly asked her. She tried faking a bravado, but couldn't do it. "...yeah. Out of my mind. You?" "I'd rather have a root canal than do this," I bravely admitted. "Well, we're doing it anyway. Come on," Matt said as we went to the wall.

I peeked out from the corner, and it was just like Commander Sampson had said. Devimon was floating around the sanctuary like he owned the place, but he wasn't the only one. A group of Ogremon and Goblimon were dancing around, swinging their clubs and just making a mess of the place. A DemiDevimon swung from the cross. I came back in. "Pssst... you guys might wanna get a load of this," I whispered.

The others took a peek, then quietly swung their heads back. "I ain't Catholic, but I'd say this holy ground ain't holy anymore," Charisse quietly noted. "Well, we'll put a stop to that, T.K., you and I better suit up first," Kari suggested. I took her at her word, and without a sound, we used the "Suit Up" feature on our Digivices. All I needed to do after that was stare at Kari, and she gave me all the courage I needed.

We then rushed into the sanctuary. "Devimon!" My voice cracked as I called him out, with my arm and pointer finger completely extended toward him. The Digimon stopped in their tracks and sharply turned towards me. Matt took over. "How dare you desecrate a house of God!" he yelled.

Devimon just stared at us and sneered. "Well, well, well. If it isn't the DigiDestined. I see you've all grown up... oooh, looks like the little brat has a girlfriend. How sweet." Charisse looked to Naomi, and the two nodded and went to work.

Charisse held out her left hand, taking slow, patient twirls as a barcode formed around her fingers. Once she turned in a full circle, she slashed her D-Tector through the data, scanning the code. "Execute! Spirit Evolution!" Her hair was loosed, her clothes were stripped off her, and her body became black as brown and green fused on her body. It was like she was transforming. This new form landed on her platform, patiently spinning to a slow stop. Her pose was clearly worth the wait, perfectly displaying her new body. Standing tall, both hands were turned back and placed on her hips. "Azimon!"

Charisse had become a tall and slim, humanoid bee African warrior fairy, especially with the white bee wings on her back. Long, full maroon hair ran down past her hips, her dark skin became maroon and a light-brown mask and neon-green bug-eyed goggles concealed half of her face. She sported a strapless brown leotard and a forest-green/black-striped transparent skirt down to her barefoot feet. She looked like a true African queen with a crown of stones with her Spirit symbol in each center on her head.

Naomi was different. She moved like she was dancing, gracefully waving her arms above her head and brought her left arm down with her hand out, a barcode formed around her fingers. With her right arm, she held it up and took her D-Tector as it appeared out of light sparkles, and brought it down to scan the code. "Execute! Spirit Evolution!" A ring of data twirled around her as her clothes vanished and her body blacked out, making sure to remove all of the vital bodylines. Flower petals spun around her and I was sure I could hear an Oriental tune as a layer of blue data and fabric wrapped around her. She glided down to her platform, landing perfectly on her feet and swirled around in an elegant dance spin, spinning fast yet steady, and then stopped with her leg out. She swiped the air twice with the two gold Gunbai fans in her hands, and then settled them and her arms by her sides. "Sakuramon!"

Sakuramon, the apparent Princess of Digimon, was a beautiful canine-like creature, with golden fur and a tall and slim figure. Her tail, hair, and dog ears were made out of blossoms. Her lovely face was painted in traditional geisha make-up. She was dressed in a cyan bodysuit with the top part in a kimono-style with her Spirit symbol upon her chest as a mark, furisode sleeves with a delicate pink blossom pattern, a gold Obi sash under her chest and tied into a bow in the back, and a pink blossom on the left side of her sash. The bottom part had long pants with wide legs and ends that resembles flower petals with darker-cyan rims. In her hands, she wielded two gold Gunbai fans with cyan blossoms and white ribbons tied around the handle. To make a long story short, she was a flower dog geisha. I thought she was beautiful.

I flipped up the scanner, then imagined I was one of the Goseigers as I held an imaginary Tensouder in my hand, then swung my arms around. I felt the DigiSoul ignite in my empty hand, and it was amazing, just like the first time. "DigiSoul..." I then reversed my swing and brought my hand down my other arm, making sure to hit the scanner. "Charge!" Then, I thrust my right hand forward and held it as the energy went to Patamon

"Patamon Digivolve to..." Patamon's body became clearer as it broke open, like a cocoon breaking. Out of that body came an angel clothed in white, and carrying a golden staff. "Angemon!"

Kari held her hand up as if she was playing an imaginary tambourine, while Matt played a short riff on his air guitar. "DigiSoul... Charge!" "Gatomon Digivolve to... Angewomon!" "Gabumon Digivolve to... Garurumon!"

Azimon and Sakuramon dove into action as the latter slapped Ogremon and Goblinmon's clubs away with her fans. "Fresh Fragrance!" Our enemies fell under the trance of a sweet perfume mist Azimon released from her mouth. That gave her just enough time to call and use her next attack. "Zip Twister!" She became a rapidly spinning tornado of green and brown, throwing them into the stained glass windows.

Sakuramon carefully jumped through the opening and thrust her arms out to gather golden specks of energy, sort of like a Solar Beam. "Sakura... Bloom!" She then launched it, obliterating the Ogremon and Goblinmon.

I shadow boxed and generally tried to keep myself moving while Angemon and Devimon went at it. Matt rode Garurumon like a champ and slammed into Devimon, biting his leg on contact! The devil tried to shake the wolf off, but had no luck. While he was distracted, Angemon concentrated the energy he had into his hand while Angewomon drew an arrow of light from her quiver. "Hand of Fate!" "Celestial Arrow!" The two attacks combined, and Garurumon let go just in time for the devil to get it. The attacks connected, and Kari and I hugged each other in joy.

Unfortunately, he had been heavily damaged, but he hadn't died. "Ha ha ha ha ha! Did you really think you could kill me like that?! You'll have to try harder than that!" Devimon taunted. We had to think about that. "Hey, anybody got any holy water?" I asked. Kari and I started looking around for it, and we finally found a vial. I got another good look into Kari's eyes for a nerve boost, then used some of my basketball and dance skills to quickly move towards Devimon. All those dance classes paid off, as I got close enough to open the vial and splash the water on his wounded leg, then rapidly backed up to safety. Devimon fell on his backside in pain, grabbing his leg in agony.

Kari

Poor T.K. He once told me how he'd lost Patamon the first time against Devimon. He should've been used to this by now, but I could only imagine how much it still affected him. My heart went out to him, and I started thinking. "T.K... there's got to be some way I can help you. You shouldn't have to fight the darkness alone. Not when I can help. But how? Come on, think. My younger self said I could conquer the darkness." At that point, a voice came into my head. "Draw on your Crest's strength with all your heart, and it will see you through." That's it! I closed my eyes, clenched my fist, and concentrated. I'd been given my Crest back for a reason, and now I had to believe I could fight with it. I kept thinking, "T.K. means too much to me to stand here and do nothing. All my friends mean too much to me." I felt my heart being filled with light, and I embraced it full-on as I started chanting. "I feel the light..." I felt my hand glow and opened my eyes. The Crest of Light emblem was stenciled on my hand, but it didn't hurt. "I see the light..." All this time, I allowed the light to surge through my body into my hand as I struck an offensive pose. The light was going from my heart to my mind, making me stronger and throwing all my fears away. This is what Joan of Arc must've felt like. "I am the light!" I declared.

I boldly pointed to Devimon, who was still reeling from the holy water on his wounds. "Devimon! You once damaged my friend's soul, filling him with fear! Now, you'll get what is coming to you!" I motioned for everyone to get out of the way, then drew my right hand back to my right side and charged a white energy sphere. "Hikari Wave!" Then, I thrust my hand forward and fired the energy sphere in the form of an energy wave at Devimon. All he could do was let out a bloodcurdling scream. "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Then, he died. That brought a confident smile to my face. "That's what you get... for desecrating... a house of light," I said, panting. Then, I fainted.

T.K.

"Kari!" I called as I rushed over to her side. While I took her and Matt to safety, Angemon cleared out the other villainous Digimon with his Omni Typhoon attack. Soon, Naomi and Charisse caught up with us after powering down.

I checked Kari's pulse, and it was still there. "She's fine. I just think that attack took a lot out of her," I said. Charisse looked impressed. "Wow, that was amazing, girl. I didn't see that coming." Naomi checked her pulse again. "We should get her to a hospital," she suggested, but I knew better. "No, I think we should just get her back to the hotel. With a good night's sleep, she'll be as good as new. Although, it's kind of weird." "How's that?" Matt asked. "When I used my powers to heal and electrocute that Golden Noose, I didn't feel the effects until the next morning. But Kari used hers just now, and she fainted immediately." "Hmmm..."

We changed back to our normal clothes, put our Digimon back in their Digivices, and called two taxis. Matt and I carried Kari on our shoulders as we walked to the entrance. "Well, another landmark is damaged. I'm surprised the police hadn't come already," Naomi noted. "They wouldn't know what to do. Um... thanks for being here to help us out, ladies," Matt said. The two girls just smiled. "You're welcome. Now let's get out of here!" Charisse suggested.

Thomas

Greg had the best of intentions, I'm sure, but his little act of exhibitionism was clearly unnecessary. Matt could've easily walked out of the hotel and no one would've thought anything. Sure enough, someone had posted a video of his performance on YouTube. "Ach du Lieber. Greg truly is a showboat," I muttered. "Sir," Gaomon said. "Yes, Gaomon?" "Am I doing this right?" I turned around, and he was attempting to do the Carlton Dance. I blankly stared at it, and felt a giant sweatdrop drip down my hair. "Yes. Yes, you are." "Oh good."

Author's Notes:

Kari's "Hikari Wave" is actually Vegeta's "Maximum Flasher", but it's more light-based and supposedly more dignified.

Yes, Greg really didn't need to provide a distraction. I just thought it would be funny, and what is more hilarious than The Carlton Dance?

I didn't realize this until I was nearly finished with the chapter, but it seems I'm inadvertently continuing a trend. In the first season, episode 13 featured Angemon's debut and "death". The second season's 13th episode involved T.K. again as he rescued Kari from the Dark Ocean. This is the 13th chapter, and once again, it involves T.K. and the powers of darkness.

"Kýrie, eléison" means "Lord, have mercy" in Greek and is a part of many liturgical rites in Eastern and Western Christianity, as well as a popular Mr. Mister song that I considered using in this chapter.

Next chapter, we're going to Dreamworld on the Gold Coast... and guess who shows up to crash the Big Brother House Party? I'll give you a hint, it's not a Digimon.
