Chapter 14: In the House
The next morning on the Kyle and Jackie O Show...
(Generic Promo Voice Over) "Kyle! Jackie O! The Kyle and Jackie O Show! The Golden Microphone is... on!"
The two stars start off the morning by greeting each other.
(Kyle) "And hi, good morning."
(Jackie O) "Good morning."
(Kyle) "We've got a great show for you this morning, I'm looking at the setlist now... and ooh, first up on the old agenda is this new video that's buzzing all over YouTube. Get a listen to this."
(clip from "It's Not Unusual" plays, accompanied by wild hoots of laughter and cheering)
(Kyle) "Now, you couldn't see this over the radio, but it's up on our Facebook page and on our main site. That's our old mate Greg from The Teenage Wolves doing his best Carlton. We'll be calling him today. [...]"
(at 7:45 AM)
(Jackie O) "7:45 AM, and now it's time for that all important phone call." (she dials the number) "We'd like to thank their manager, Kazuki, for this. Major thanks, Kazuki." (the phone rings)
(Greg) [over the phone] "Hello?"
(Jackie O) "Good morning. This is Jackie O, from the Kyle and Jackie O Show. How are you?"
(Greg) "Ughhhhhh... it's 7:45 in the morning, and most of us had a late night."
(Kyle) "Thinking you can have a bit of a lie-in, eh? Well, no-ho-ho-ho you don't. We didn't get a chance to talk to all of you."
(Greg) "Uh... how'd you get my number?"
(Kyle) "Your manager, Kazuki."
(Greg) "Oh...well, what do you want now?"
(Jackie O) "We want to talk to Kari."
(Greg sighs) (Greg) "All right, let me see if I can get her out of bed this morning." (we hear footsteps and the faint sound of Greg knocking on Kari's door) "Kari?" (he knocks again, mirroring Sheldon Cooper's door knock) "Kari? Hmm... I don't think she's dead, because I saw her early this morning, like at about one. She looked really tired."
(Jackie O) "Ooooooh... any reason why? Is she the party girl?"
(Greg) "Kari? Ha ha ha ha! No! Kari Kamiya is a good girl, she probably stayed up too late doing her homework or something."
(Jackie O) "Hmmm... that's a novel twist there. A pop star who actually does homework."
(Kyle) "Pfft, homework? I don't think so. Nobody does homework anymore."
(Greg) "I'll have you know I did my homework all the time! I even did it in class while the teacher was talking!"
(Kyle) "So you wouldn't actually have to do it at home?"
(Greg) "Yeah!"
(Kyle) "Yeah, I like that way of thinking."
(Jackie O) "We're not questioning her integrity, if that's what you're thinking. Try again."
(we hear Greg pounding on the door again) (Greg) "Kari! Wake up! We're on the radio again!" (after a pause...) "No answer. Oh well."
(Jackie O) "Awwww, that's too bad. We'll just have to try again later. Anyway, tell us about that whole Carlton Dance thing you did last night."
(Greg) "Oh yeah, about that... ha ha ha ha ha... ugh... you see, I lost a bet with Marcus. We played Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook. Whoever got the lower score would have to go out and do something crazy for the fans in the lobby. He got 154,000; I got 135,350."
(Jackie O) "Well, it could've been worse. You could've had to do a pole dance or something." (Kyle starts laughing)
(Greg) "Oh I couldn't do one of those. My legs are too long."
(Kyle) "No, no, they're perfect! Long legs are good for a pole dance."
(Greg) "Besides, nobody would want to see me spinning around a pole in my boxer shorts. Wait, why has this conversation gone this way?"
(Kyle) "I dunno, but I'm loving it!" (he laughs naughtily)
(Greg) "Dirty old man."
(Kyle) "Prude!"
(Greg) "Anyway, what do you want to know?"
(Jackie O) "We heard you'd be in Dreamworld later this week, and that you'd be doing something special for Big Brother."
(Greg) "Oh, that's right. I just got the e-mail from Southern Star. We'll be shooting some promos and online footage for the 10th series. Can't mention any names, but expect to see some of your old favorites in the House for this bash."
(Kyle) "Well have we got a surprise for you. We just got the e-mail too, and we'll be there!"
(Greg) "...oh no..."
Matt
Kari was absolutely drained and barely functioning. That attack she used took a lot out of her. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't like she couldn't walk or take care of herself. She just wasn't her usual peppy self. "Ugh... my head. Hey, Matt," she slowly said. "Yeah?" "I think I'm gonna call a sick day. You'll have to find another backup singer." "Are you still tired?" I asked. She nodded her head, quietly yawning. "I'm really sorry," she apologized. T.K. just put his hand on her back and replied, "That's OK, Kari. You should rest, you need it." "Thanks, guys."
From the cave in the Digital World, Lord Bagra and Tactimon are looking on. "Well, at least we accomplished part of our mission. She's shown us some of her strength, and it's exhausted her. Now is the perfect time to strike!" Tactimon insists. Dragomon slithers in and speaks. "I could not agree more, and normally, you would be correct. However, you must think like a DigiDestined. Someone will be more than likely be watching her and will thwart our efforts if we're discovered. Besides, it would be so much more gratifying to destroy her when she's at her highest potential." "Dragomon, every second we keep waiting is another second they'll use to get stronger. It would be bad tactics to keep waiting," Tactimon argues. "And I thought you enjoyed a challenge, Tactimon," Dragomon counters. The tactician silently agrees.
Lord Bagra addresses the two. "Fear not. Soon, my great plan will come into action."
Greg
I finally came down to breakfast to find Rika, Marcus, and Thomas waiting. "About time," Rika said as she took a sip of her orange juice. "I want Kazuki's head on a silver platter," I announced. Thomas, as usual, came up with his own conclusion. "It would seem that way, especially since he's so free with our personal cell phone numbers. What concerns me more is why we'd be called in the first place," he said, glaring at me. I frowned. "At least I came up with a good cover story as to why I did it, something you'd never be able to do, Thomas H. Norstein." "Clearly, you underestimate my mental capacity."
Rika separated us. "All right, guys, knock it off! Anyway, I just got the e-mail from this Southern Star company. They want us to play at a party in the Big Brother House at Dreamworld in Coomera." She held up a map she'd printed off. "Now, since we're V.I.P.s, we get free entry into the park. They've got what they call the 'Big 8 Thrill Rides', and I want to hit all of them." "Yeah!" Marcus agreed, and the two fistbumped.
"You two can make yourselves sick if you'd like, but as for me, I'm far more interested in this," Thomas said, pointing to a location on the map. I read it off. "'Tiger Island.' Didn't know you were an animal lover," I commented. "Well, not only that, but it's far more educational." "But Thomas, you're a genius. You're a doctor. Isn't it time you had a day off?" "Yes, it is, and this is how I choose to enjoy it." Rika and Marcus just shook their heads. "He'll never learn, will he?" Marcus asked. "Uh uh," Rika answered.
We spent the rest of the day hanging around the Westpac Centre. Most of the other members of the band did their homework, and Thomas was there to tutor them. Then, we did some soundchecks and rehearsals, because practice makes perfect. I left at least five angry messages to the president of SME, and Matt left three more. As punishment for his misdeeds, Marcus punched holes through Kazuki's bongo drums. "Aww man, I've been violated! You know how much bread these cost me?" he asked while holding Marcus by his shirt collar. "No, but if you don't let go of my shirt within three seconds, you'll get to see what an Australian ambulance looks like from the inside," Marcus shot back. "Dude, you have anger issues. Like, mega ones," Kazuki responded as he let go after two seconds.
We asked Lily to join us for backups, and she happily agreed to do it. "Oh, you won't need to teach me the songs. I see the concert every night," she giggled. That brought a look of relief to Matt's face.
That night, during the concert, we did the "Home and Away" number again, and while the others were setting up, someone at the audio booth turned on "It's Not Unusual". Once again, I did the Carlton Dance, and the crowd just ate it up. Matt grabbed me by the back of my shirt collar and dragged me back to my spot. The crowd loved that, too. "All right, Melbourne! You ready to run around!?" he screamed. The audience roared back, and we started getting into it.

The band gets into its hard rock mode as Marcus starts rapidly pounding on those drums. Matt leans in on the mic. The lights behind them rapidly go from red to white and back again, while the video screen behinds them shows a front seat view of a really fast roller coaster, as well as other insane and high-intensity situations. The crowd is just enjoying this.
Matt:
Things are starting to accelerate into something
Never stopping always trouble bubbling
Matt/T.K.:
Now I think I'm getting dizzy, too much spinning
Matt:
Page by page the plot is thickening quickening!
Matt/T.K.:
It's getting too insane
I'm trying to maintain
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
Band:
You run around!
I run around!
We're all gonna run run run around!
You run around!
I run around!
We all do a run run run around!
Matt:
It is getting closer
More intense, ever spinning
Twisting turning roller coaster!
Matt/T.K.:
Inch by inch the gap is closing
Matt:
Pressure building, temperature rising
Higher and higher!
Matt/T.K.:
It's getting too crazy
I wish I could maybe
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
Band:
You run around!
I run around!
We're all gonna run run run around!
You run around!
I run around!
We all do a run run run around!
And Marcus is keeping up with the beat perfectly as Lily is bouncing up and down. Backstage, Kari is watching from a closed-circuit TV with the Digimon. Agumon and Veemon attempt to do the running man. Patamon, Gatomon, and Gabumon build a mini mosh pit. Even Renamon can't help but swish her tail while watching.
Matt:
Run run baby
Run run baby
Run run baby
Run run baby
Run run baby
Run run baby
Like a rocket!
Like a rocket!
Never stopping!
You'll never stop it!
Now, Lily is running around in place.
Band:
You run around!
I run around!
We're all gonna run run run around!
You run around!
I run around!
We all do a run run run around!
(Lily: You run around) You run around!
I run around!
We're all gonna run run run around!
(Lily: You run around) You run around!
I run around!
We all do a run run run around!
Matt:
Things are starting to accelerate into something
Never stopping always trouble bubbling
Matt/T.K.:
Now I think I'm getting dizzy, too much spinning
Matt:
Page by page the plot is thickening quickening!
Matt/T.K.:
It's getting too insane
I'm trying to maintain
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
Band:
You run around!
I run around!
We're all gonna run run run around!
You run around!
I run around!
We all do a run run run around!
(Lily: You run around) You run around!
I run around!
We're all gonna run run run around!
(Lily: You run around) You run around!
I run around!
We all do a run run run around!
The song ends as T.K. strikes a power chord on his guitar, and the audience is screaming their heads off.
Greg
Kari enjoyed the concert, and even managed to do some of her homework during the slower parts.
The rest of the night was uneventful, thank goodness for us. I spent mine answering fan comments on my Facebook page. "Hey, here's one. 'Greg, you're an inspiration to nerds everywhere. How'd you learn to do the Carlton Dance?' Signed, Carl Banks. Hmm... you think I should give him a straight answer, Veemon?" "Well, yeah. You'd want a celebrity to give you a straight answer, wouldn't ya?" "Yeah, I would." I started typing. "How does this sound? 'Carl, I took a number of dance classes before going out on tour. You wouldn't believe how much work goes into being a star. Cheers.'" Veemon gave me a thumbs up, and I hit Enter.
"I got another one. 'Greg, you're in a band with two girls. Which one do you like more?'" I thought about it. "'Well, I like Kari, but she's already committed to T.K. I actually went on a date with Rika, but she moved just a bit too far and grabbed my belt buckle while we were making out in a karaoke parlor. Bear in mind, we were doing just fine making out, but when she went for the buckle, I knew she was going too far. I ended up singing "Does Your Mother Know?" to Rika, who I now affectionately nickname 'Little Miss Jailbait'. But to answer your question, I like both of them, but I'm not in a relationship with either one.'" "You know what I like about you, Greg? You're willing to be honest with people, just tell them straight up. You've got nothing to hide," Veemon said. "Except you from the rest of the world," I teased.
Matt
I checked my Facebook messages as well. "Oh, here's one from Jennie McArthur. 'Matt, I think it's great that you and your brother are getting a chance to spend time together. My brother and I were split up when our parents died and we are now being shuffled from foster home to foster home. I haven't seen him in six years, and I think I may never see him again. Never forget what you have.'" That was so heartwarming, and it made me think about how much of a jerk I'd been to T.K. My eyes started welling up with tears as I wrote my response. "'Jennie – I'll admit, I've got tears in my eyes right now as I'm writing this. Whatever you do, kid, don't give up hope. That's something my brother would tell you, and that's what I'm telling you now. It may not be right away, but never stop believing you'll be reunited. Love, Matt.'" After I hit Enter, I moved my laptop and put my head on my desk, just gently sobbing. Gabumon scratched my back with his claws. "It makes you think, doesn't it?"
Marcus
Nobody ever sends me any messages on my Facebook account. Eh, it's probably better that way. I wouldn't know what to say to any of 'em.
Anyway, the next day we had an early flight to Bilinga, then a 34-minute drive to Coomera. We checked in at the InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort, a pretty lush place. We each got a room, and mine came with an awesome view of the marina. The room itself was definitely something to write home about. I threw my suitcase on the bed, then put it down and threw myself on the bed. "Aww yeah! Now this is how a rock star lives!" I said. I was so excited, I just had to open the shutters and make my presence known. "Hey, Gold Coast! Marcus Damon is in the house! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
Thomas
The room was very nice and was "appointed in the gracious décor of a classic Queensland homestead style room including plantation shutters opening onto a furnished private balcony". Or at least, that's according to the hotel's website. I examined the room carefully. "Very satisfactory, I'd say. Wouldn't you agree, Gaomon?" I asked. "I wouldn't know off hand, sir. Perhaps I should inspect the room for myself." I agreed and realized him into the room. He carefully examined the room, sniffing the air. "I think this will do just fine, sir."
Just then, his ears perked up, and he opened the shutters. I looked out to join him, and there was Marcus, screaming and laughing his head off. "Sir, it seems Master Marcus is enjoying his room as well," Gaomon observed. "I can tell. I just wish he wouldn't do it so loudly."
Greg
After we unpacked, we rode in a limo for about 17 minutes to Dreamworld, Australia's largest theme park. It's like Tokyo Disneyland, except there's nothing Disney about the park. We arrived at the park at about noon, two hours after the park opened. Dreamworld was nice enough to give Matt an Accesso Q4U device (yet another device for him to keep up with) that allowed us to book our spots on the rides instead of waiting in long lines. Of course, it wouldn't matter that much since I figured everyone else in the park would be doing the exact same thing. I also figured only Marcus would be a jerk and cut through the lines.
After we bought our tickets, the ticket clerk made an announcement on the park intercom. "Ladies and gentlemen, and all you girls out there, The Teenage Wolves are on the prowl in Dreamworld!" One thing led to another, and soon, every teenage girl in the park was after us. "RUN FOR IT!" Matt yelled.
["A Hard Day's Night"
Written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney
Performed by The Teenage Wolves
Lead Vocal: Kari Kamiya (Lara Jill Miller) [verses, double-tracked], Rika Nonaka (Melissa Fahn) [bridge, double-tracked]]
As the screams of teenage girls grow louder and louder, the band does make a run for it. They decide to split up as Marcus and Rika head toward the Tower of Terror II and Kari, Matt, T.K., and Greg
head for Wiggles World to hide. [Please note that the song is pre-recorded, so Kari and Rika are not actually singing or lip-syncing this song during the sequence.]
Kari:
It's been a hard day's night, and I've been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you, I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
Thomas, in the meantime, fights his way through the crowds to get to Tiger Island.
Kari:
You know I work all day to get you money to buy you things
And it's worth it just to hear you say you're going to give me everything
So why on earth should I moan, 'cause when I get you alone
You know I feel OK
Marcus and Rika cut through the lines and board the ride, with Rika holding up the Q4U device. After the safety mechanism is in place, the "Escape Pod" is electro-magnetically accelerated to 160.9 kilometres per hour (100.0 mph) in seven seconds along the extended, 206-metre (676 ft) launch tunnel. The track then pitches up 90 degrees to the vertical, with the passengers pulling 4.5Gs. Riders are weightless during the entire vertical section of the ride for about 6.5 seconds, 3.25 seconds going up and 3.25 seconds falling back down. Marcus and Rika, of course, scream. The car then pitches back down to horizontal and enters the tunnel where an on-ride camera takes photographs of riders. The vehicle continues to hurtle back into the station where it comes to a fairly rapid stop. Thomas finally makes it to Tiger Island and closely observes the tigers, taking notes with a pad and pen. Unfortunately, a group of girls run after him and he ends up using his pen to sign autographs. The tigers look indifferent.
Rika:
When I'm home everything seems to be right
When I'm home feeling you holding me tight, tight, yeah
Kari:
It's been a hard day's night, and I've been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you, I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
OWWW!
In the meantime, Kari, Matt, T.K., and Greg are at Zombie Evilution and are hiding in the building. Matt and T.K. go in one door on one floor, while Kari and Greg come out another on the bottom floor. The two split up to go into left and right doors on separate floors. A nameless teenage girl sees Matt go into one door and goes to it. But just as she opens it, Matt comes out a completely different door; the girl chaser goes to the new door; and the cycle repeats.
Kari:
So why on earth should I moan, 'cause when I get you alone
You know I feel OK
Rika:
When I'm home everything seems to be right
When I'm home feeling you holding me tight, tight, yeah
The three original DigiDestined and Greg find a spare "Big Red Car" hidden in the back of Wiggles World, and take it for a test spin, with Greg doing the driving. Marcus and Rika catch the car by the Giant Drop and make a running dive into the back seat.
Kari:
Oooh, it's been a hard day's night, and I've been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you, I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
You know I feel alright
You know I feel alright
They drive it to Tiger Island, only to be stopped by "Henry the Octopus" and "Captain Feathersword" costumed characters. Greg slams on the breaks.
Greg
I knew I could not hit that octopus, so I slammed on the brakes. "Ahoy there! You think you can get away with stealing the Big Red Car, do ye?" the pirate asked, staying completely in character. "Uh, yeah, and do you wanna know why?" I asked. "Sure." "Because we're a pop group from Japan, and we're running away from our screaming fangirls." "Well, that don't mean ye can be stealing the Big Red Car. Even celebrities need to follow the rules, right Henry?" Henry the Octopus nodded.
Kari stepped up to bat, giving the pirate a sincere look of sorrow. "We're sorry we stole it," she genuinely said. That just melted the pirate's heart. "Well, no harm was done, so I forgive ye. I don't know about the Dreamworld management, though." Just then, the screaming fangirls caught up with us, and we had a major impromptu meet and greet session.
Marcus and Rika managed to get to most of the Big Eight Thrill Rides. Unfortunately, Wipeout and Shockwave were closed. We were briskly and almost rudely told by park attendant that most rides undergo a rigorous maintenance program which requires their closure for short periods of time during off peak seasons. It was Wipeout and Shockwave's turns this time.
We ate lunch at the Billabong Buffet Restaurant, the only sit-down restaurant in the whole park. I've never tasted such terrible food in my life. Everything looked too greasy or undercooked. I prayed I wouldn't get food poisoning. Apparently, if you're the biggest theme park in Australia, you don't care about your food quality. What made the meal slightly worse were two visitors who dropped in on our table. It was a relatively tall, yet bulky man with a beard followed by a woman with long, blonde hair and a beaming smile that never goes away. I knew who it was the moment the man shouted, "Hello, Teenage Wolves!" "Oh no..." I groaned. It was Kyle and Jackie O.
"So, how do you like your day at Dreamworld?" Jackie O squawked. Marcus counted off the complaints on his fingers. "Food sucks, two of your rides are closed, the ticket attendant didn't hesitate to mention we were in there, so we got chased around. Yeah, this place is almost as sleazy as you two." Kyle playfully punched Marcus in the shoulder, but he certainly felt it. "Crikey, mate. You make us out to be like tax collectors, you know that? You know we're not that bad. 4.6 million people can't be wrong, eh? Ha ha ha ha!" "It's a matter of taste, actually," Thomas responded. Kyle just brushed that off. "Well, once you finish your meal, we'll be escorting you to the Big Brother House, where you'll be playing tonight," he said. Rika let out a huge sigh and just looked like a sullen teenager. "Whoopee," she said with a sarcastic deadpan.
Matt
After lunch, Marcus, Rika, and I came up with the great idea of marching with Kyle and Jackie O to the compound. Rika led us all (except the two radio hosts) in whistling the "Colonel Bogey March" from The Bridge on the River Kwai. Some people flipped them off (the radio hosts, not us), but quite a few were friendly to them.
We continued our march clear through Dreamworld, stopping at Dreamworld Studios. Jackie O went on and on about the history. "Now this used to be the Music Bowl, then it became the Dreamworld Amphitheatre in 1990 before the Ten Network and Southern Star Endemol decided to host Big Brother here." "Whoa, whoa, whoa... the Ten Network?" Marcus asked. "They switched networks," Kyle explained in a patronizing tone.
"Hey, we've only been in the country for what, a week. Cut us some slack!" Marcus called. The two hotheads got face to face. "Cut you some slack? Oh, believe me, I have. I bet you'd like to know what I really think of your band's album. The reason you're on this bloody tour to begin with is because you're the same processed pop rubbish that the kids go for these days. And don't try to fool me with the Tonic and Savage Garden covers, you hardly do them any justice. In fact, most of your covers don't do any justice to a trained ear like mine. Out of the three original songs on the whole album, only one of them is any good, and that's the title track. The other 13 are just rubbish." T.K. looked a bit shocked at this, and with good reason. He had co-written one of those 13 "rubbish" tracks. I firmly placed a hand on his shoulder to keep him away from our offending host.
Just as Marcus was about to go for a kill, Kari pulled out her whistle and gave herself another spirometry test. She caught her breath, but I could see it in her eyes. She was angry. I had to cut her off before anything else happened. "Let's just go to the House already," I said.
Greg
The House was actually 350 meters away from the stage where we'd be doing the concerts, so again we marched while whistling the Colonel Bogey March. This time, Marcus added a lyrical jab about the size and consistency of Kyle's genitals. Kyle, in return, threw out some ugly terms towards our band's music and Marcus as well. I was just whistling, pretending nothing was happening. If I wasn't looking for cameras so much, I'd have just as well punched both of them out.
I would tell you more about the actual production compound and the twist that they'd have for that year, but we had to sign a whole bunch of legal documents basically saying we wouldn't. As it turns out, Kyle and Jackie O hosted the 2008 series, and that's what may have contributed towards the show's original downfall on Ten. They invited some guy named Corey Worthington (who had thrown a party while his parents were away and made the headlines) into the house for a few days, and then invited Carson Kressley in to give the contestants a makeover.
We walked through the corridors of the camera run until we reached the kitchen, where Sonia was there to greet us. "Guys, you made it!" she happily said. I rushed over to Sonia and gave her a big hug, as did Marcus and T.K. There's just something about Sonia that's different. She could turn the world on with her smile, and take a nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile. She noticed our escorts. "Kyle, Jackie O. ….Suppose Endemol had to bring you back for the tenth series party," she said. "Pleasure," Jackie O said. Kyle just gave a short nod.
"Now Sonia, you have to admit... they did what they could after I left," another blonde woman said. Thomas took notice. "Well hello there. Thomas H. Norstein, at your service," he smoothly said, tenderly taking the other blonde's hand and kissing it like the smooth operator he thought he was. She looked rather charmed. "Oh... I'm Gretel Killeen," she introduced herself. Sonia started to realize her faux pas. "Oh, yes, I'm sorry. Teenage Wolves, this is Gretel Killeen, the original host of 'Big Brother'. She hosted the first eight series, counting the celebrity one." "Where I got evicted on Day 23, thanks a bloody lot," Kyle cut in. "Oh no, it wasn't me who voted you out, it was the Australian viewing public," Gretel corrected him. "For charity," the bearded fat man grumbled.
Thomas
For those of you who don't know what "Big Brother" is, I shall explain. 14 or more contestants live in an isolated house for several months, with cameras and microphones everywhere for all the nation to see. Housemates are at all times under the control of Big Brother, a rule enforcing authority figure who monitors behaviour of the housemates, sets tasks and punishments and provides the mechanism for contestants to make external requests. Each week, the housemates cast votes to nominate two other housemates for eviction. Housemates are not permitted to discuss nominations. The three (or more in the case of a tie) housemates with the most nomination votes are nominated, and then the viewers then decide which of the nominees is evicted. This continues for a definite amount of time. The last housemate standing wins a huge cash prize and a car.
We took a tour of the house, and learned a lot of interesting facts about the show. For example, More than 6000km of video tape is used in the production of "Big Brother". Six video tape machines run simultaneously to record all of the action in the house. 13 directors, 35 producers, 10 story assistants, eight runners, 28 camera operators, 10 editors and 18 audio technicians create the show, with three people providing the voice of Big Brother in a sound proof booth 350m away in the control room. There is always one "voice" in the control room booth at any one time. When housemates are made to wait at the diary room door, it is because cameras are being repositioned.
The Diary Room consisted of a chair and a camera lens to look into. We each had a chance to sit down in it and speak with "Big Brother". They were testing everything to insure it was working. I went first and sat down in the golden chair.
[Note: Leon Murray is first. He's the main voice for the 2008, 2012, and 2013 series.]
Just then, an authoritarian, emotionless voice came over the intercom. "This, is Big Brother. Identify yourself." "My name is Dr. Thomas H. Norstein, keyboardist and tactician for The Teenage Wolves." "Very well. So, Doctor, what brings you, into the Big Brother House?" "My group is performing for this tenth series gala tonight, and we're also shooting some promos." "Noted." "Hmm... you know, I must ask you something." "Fire away." "How do you maintain your sanity? You have all of these random people come to you and share their feelings in this very room. You're seemingly surrounded by people who wear their emotions on their sleeves. I can only imagine it would be very taxing on you mentally." "You forget, Thomas. Big Brother, is the one controlling the game. Big Brother is omnipresent, and never loses touch with that. This game, much like life, is a blend of physiological, and psychological warfare." "I know, I know. It's just that... to put it rather bluntly, I'm surrounded by morons. Especially Marcus. He's too overconfident and too gutsy." "As compared to you?" "Yes." "Hmm... it would seem, to Big Brother, that you two may perhaps compliment each other." I had to pause and think about that. "Hmm... I never considered that before." "Is there anything else?" "No. Thank you." "That is all. You may now exit the Diary Room."
[Peter Cunningham takes his turn as Big Brother.]
Marcus
I was next. "This, is Big Brother." "Who cares?" "Big Brother cares." "Eh..." "What, can Big Brother, do for you?" "Get rid of Kyle Sandilands." "Why?" "The guy's a jerk. He got in my face today and told me that our album sucked. I just want to punch his face in." I punched my fist in my palm and growled. "I've really had enough of the guy. Have you listened to our album?" "No." "Do you wanna hear something from it?" "...Not really." "Eh, what do you care? You're just some guy in a booth pretending to be this all-powerful being!" He didn't say anything for a while. Probably had to think about it. "Marcus. Please, listen carefully. Do not attempt to be insubordinate with Big Brother, as, you will not win. Is there anything else?" "No." "That is all."
[Leon Murray goes into the booth and becomes Big Brother.]
Greg
"OK, Big Brother, it seems T.K, Kari, and I are the only normal people in the whole band. OK, and Thomas too. Rika wants to get laid, Marcus wants to fight all the time, and Matt can get super-jealous whenever he doesn't get the spotlight. I mean, what's a guitarist to do?" "Hmmm... that is a tough question." "What I'm thinking is, I shouldn't worry about them. I should just focus on me." "Well said." "But isn't that a bit selfish? I mean, especially since we're part of a team, and I'm the oldest?" "Not at all. A team is only as strong, as its weakest link."
[Back to Peter Dempsey, one of the relief voices.]
Kari
"Kari." "Hello, Big Brother." "What's on your mind?" "Well, I'm experiencing all of these changes. And they're all coming so quickly. I mean, last year, I was just an almost normal 13-year-old girl. And now, I'm famous, and I'm changing so quickly." "Kari. Change, is constant. Once you go forward, there is no way of going back. Are you afraid of these changes?" "For some of them, no. But for others... yeah. I am." "Kari. You, are stronger than you know. Do not, under any circumstances, underestimate your inner strength." I had to think about that. "Thanks, Big Brother." "Think nothing of it. Is there anything else?" "No." "That is all."
[Mr. Cunningham goes back into the booth.]
Rika
I didn't want to participate in this stupid exercise, but Matt insisted I go in there. So, I did. "This, is Big Brother." "Okay..." "Rika. What's on your mind?" "Nothing much. Just had to come in because Matt said so." "Do you do everything Matt tells you to do?" "Eh, sometimes. Most of the time, I like going my own way." "Ah, so, you're a rebel." "Yeah, I guess you could say that." "How do you like working with the band?" "They're OK, I guess." It got quiet for a long time. "Is there anything else?" "You tell me." "That is all."
[Once again, Leon Murray.]
T.K.
"Big Brother, do you think darkness is a good thing?" I asked. "In some respects, yes. After all, how would you be able to bring yourself to sleep if the sun was perpetually in the sky?" "I don't mean that kind of darkness. I mean, the other kind." "Explain." "Well, for a long time, I've been confused about that. I know I'm supposed to believe all life is precious and important, but I've just had this calling in life. I feel like... I'm supposed to defeat those who do evil deeds with the power of darkness." "That, is not necessarily a bad thing." "No, but can darkness ever be good?" "T.K. Man has been asking that question for centuries. In the end, it is up to you."
Greg
After we finished the tour, the Dreamworld staff brought in our instruments and we set up in the backyard. We had to sign more documents stating that we wouldn't reveal the twist or post pictures of the House on Twitter or Instagram before the premiere date of July 29th. We practiced our set list of four songs, then filmed some promos. They all had something to do with a Twist.
Later that night, we had a light dinner. I made sure to save some room for the party food that night. Around 7:30, the guests began to arrive. First to show up was Mike Goldman, narrator of the Daily Shows and an all right guy. He was followed by Ryan Fitzgerald and Bree Amer, who had both been on the fourth series. I tell you, some of the former Housemates were pretty famous and pretty wild people. There was Sara-Marie, who was famous for doing a "Bum Dance" on the show. Then there was Brodie Young, who had just gotten canned from announcing "The Price is Right". He kept shouting "Are you ready to win!" Then, there was this other Housemate, Merlin. He'd been a refugee and had put tape over his mouth when he was evicted. They brought back almost all the winners from the first eight series, and most of the cast of the ninth series. Thomas did some more networking, while I chatted up some of the female Housemates, namely Estelle and Angie from the ninth series.
It seemed Dreamworld saved most of their good food for catered events like this one. We had hand rolled California roll sushi with light soy, shrimp nigiri with wasabi mayonnaise, and Peking duck wontons with spicy plum sauce. I had to wonder, though, whether they had made that for us because we were from Japan.
Later, we got to our positions and Gretel introduced us. "Ladies and gentlemen, and former Housemates, I'd like to thank you all for coming. We're now clearing out the dance floor, and please, make sure you don't fall into the pool. I'd now like to introduce one of the finest groups in the country. In the city, they're not so good, but in the country, they're terrific! The Teenage Wolves!"
["Carry On Dancing"
Written by Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones
Performed by The Teenage Wolves feat. Big Brother (Leon Murray)
Lead Singer: Takeru "T.K." Takaishi (Michael Cunio)]
As the band starts playing, the groove gets underway. It's interesting to note that the moon is 65.6% visible. We get shots of the former Housemates and hosts dancing. "Fitzy" brought his wife with him, and Bree is with her current boyfriend.
T.K.:
The moonlight
Shines down interstellar beams
And the groove tonight
Is something more than you've ever seen
The stars and planets taking shape
A stolen kiss has come too late
(Kari: In the moonlight)
Carry on, keep romancing
Carry on, carry on dancing
(Kari: In the moonlight)
Carry on, keep romancing
Carry on, carry on dancing
We get shots of the band performing and the Housemates dancing. Kyle and Jackie O are together, and seem to be having a good time by a punchbowl.
T.K.:
You're never safe 'till you see the dawn
And if the clock strikes past midnight
The hope is gone
To move under
(Kari: The moonlight)
Carry on, keep romancing
Carry on, carry on dancing
(Kari: In the moonlight)
Carry on, keep romancing
Carry on, carry on dancing
Just then, Big Brother's voice comes over the PA system as he joins in the song.
Big Brother: (spoken)
Move. Closer. Passion. Stronger.
Rika plays a piece on her keyboard, then the song resumes as we get more shots of the Housemates.
T.K.:
There's a magic only two can tell
In the dark night
Ultraviolet is a wicked spell
The stars and planets taking shape
A stolen kiss has come too late
(Kari: In the moonlight)
Carry on, keep romancing
Carry on, carry on dancing
(Kari: In the moonlight)
Carry on, keep romancing
Carry on, carry on dancing
(Kari: In the moonlight) (Matt: Moving on, moving all night)
Carry on, keep romancing
Carry on, carry on dancing
(Kari: In the moonlight) (Matt: Moving on, moving all night)
Carry on, keep romancing
Carry on, carry on dancing
After a short instrumental piece, the band stops there, and everyone applauds.
Greg
The party continued as usual. Our next three songs were "I Turn Around", "Let's Kick It Up", and "Run Around". Right after that last song, Kyle rushed up on stage and stole the mic from Matt. "All right, this is the kind of dribble I was telling you about. Take 'Let's Kick It Up'. Now that was just bad. It sounds like something you'd write for a children's series on the telly. Just juvenile. And 'Run Around'. Sure, it has a fast beat, but that's all it has. I mean... have you heard the lyrics? No substance." Thomas just nodded, but Marcus decided he had enough as he fired a punch at Kyle's face. He connected perfectly. Things just melted from there as the fight became brutal. Punches were thrown, eyes became bruised, and someone even had the nerve to call the police. Jackie O tried to drag Kyle away, but she became involved as well.
The Coomera Police squad cars came in at around 11:30 and put Marcus under arrest. When Kazuki found out, he flipped and canceled our stops at Dreamworld, Tokyo, and Fukuoka. We were destined to hit the news. PurityxSpirited would get the stages all to themselves at Dreamworld.
Sonia followed us to the police station. "Oh dear, I'm sorry it happened like this. But you know, your friend Marcus has anger issues." "We know," T.K. said regretfully. Matt just grimaced. The trial was set for February 26th. Luckily, Marcus didn't have to spend time in the holding cell because Kazuki convinced Commander Sampson to post the AU$25,000 bail.
In the Digital World, Tactimon and Lord Bagra take notice at the events. "So, it looks like one of the DigiDestined is a little too punch happy. I wonder if it can be exploited," Tactimon ponders. "Perhaps, but that may not be the best move. We should stick to the plan," Lord Bagra advises. "What plan? Devimon failed us, so did Matadormon. We've been laying low ever since then." "Exactly."
Author's Notes:
The tenth series gala never happened in Australia, not to my knowledge anyway. This was merely an excuse to get into the Australian Big Brother House.
Don't worry, guys. Marcus isn't going to jail. I included this altercation just to show what kind of consequences his hotheadedness and temper could have.
Tactimon and Lord Bagramon will get a chance to act in this next chapter.
