Chapter 20: One Night in Zurich

T.K.

The label had given us a tour bus big enough for all of us, along with a driver. So we decided to take it to Zurich, Switzerland. That would buy us a little more time to work on schoolwork and our album. I was stuck on my chemistry homework, and as usual, had to ask Thomas to tutor me on it. It dealt with balancing equations. When was I ever going to need to know that?

Matt had gotten a call from Kazuki, who had been sending out representatives to watch the concerts. Apparently, the label wanted us to keep improving on the tight harmonies. "Kazuki ought to be shot," Matt grumbled. I looked up from my homework "Why's that, bro?" "We're a rock group, we're not meant to be rhythm and blues. I mean, seriously. Anyway, guys, we might as well get this over with." "What, we're going to do this now?" I asked. "Yeah. 'End of the Road'. I made the mistake of telling Kazuki our next album's concept, he told the label, and they want us to add this song." That brought a groan from Marcus. "Why doesn't the label just leave us alone?" he griped.

After we finally got everyone together and we had warmed up our vocal cords, Matt blew the right key into his harmonica.

["End of the Road"

Written by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Antonio "L.A." Reid, and Daryl Simmons

Performed by Boyz II Wolves (Greg Logan [Doug Erholtz], Takeru "T.K." Takaishi [Michael Cunio], Marcus Damon [Quinton Flynn], Thomas H. Norstein [Crispin Freeman], Yamato "Matt" Ishida [Michael Reisz])]

Matt starts playing the song on his acoustic guitar. Marcus turns to Rika and delivers the spoken introduction. "Girl, you know we belong together. I have no time for you to be playing with my heart like this. You'll be mine forever baby, you just see."

T.K.:

We belong together
And you that I'm right
Why do you play with my heart?
Why do you play with my mind?

Said we'd be forever, said it'd never die
How could you love me and leave me
And never say good-bye?

Thomas:

When I can't sleep at night without holding you tight
Girl, each time I try I just break down and cry
Pain in my head, oh I'd rather be dead
Spinning around and around

Group:

Although we've come to the end of the road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you
Come to the end of the road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you

Greg:

Girl, I know you really love me
You just don't realize
You've never been there before
It's only your first time

Maybe I'll forgive you, hmmm
Maybe you'll try
We should be happy together
Forever, you and I

Thomas:

Can you love me again like you loved me before?
This time I want you to love me much more
This time instead just come to my bed
And baby just don't let me, don't let me down

And Thomas, in a bold-yet-safe move, decides not to try any of the vocal gymnastics demonstrated in the Boyz II Men version.

Group:

Although we've come to the end of the road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you
Come to the end of the road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you

Once again, Marcus turns to Rika and turns on the charm. "Girl, I'm here for you. All those times of night when you just hurt me and just ran out with that other fella. Baby I knew about it, I just didn't care. You just don't understand how much I love you, do you? I'm here for you." T.K. starts up again with the song.

T.K.:

Maybe I'll forgive you, baby
Maybe you'll try
We should be happy together
Forever, you and I

Thomas:

Can you love me again like you loved me before?
This time I want you to love me much more
This time instead just come to my bed
And baby just don't let me, don't let me down

Group:

Although we've come to the end of the road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you
Come to the end of the road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you

Although we've come to the end of the road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you
Come to the end of the road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you

Matt ends it with a long power chord on his acoustic guitar.

Matt

"Now was it that bad?" I asked. Anya spoke up. "Actually, no. I am quite impressed with the arrangement. You kept it simple but with plenty of emotion." Marcus just sat there with his arms crossed. "You guys do whatever. I'm not putting that on our band's album." So, we went back to our homework and album planning. We arrived at our hotel, the Crowne Plaza Zurich. After we unpacked, we explored the city for a while. One of the first things we did was take a funicular up the steep hill for a fine view of the city. Kari took plenty of pictures, both with and without fans. Kari took Anya for a shopping trip along the Bahnhofstrasse, where from what I heard, they got swarmed by fans. Later, we did a soundcheck at the Letzigrund, another soccer stadium. It seats up to 50,000 people for concerts, and we were sold out.

We ate dinner at the Kronenhalle, this really nice place at Bellevue. But since none of us learned how to read German, or French for that matter, Thomas had to translate the menus for us. That's why you always take a European with you, man. It'd be a whole lot awkward otherwise.

After dinner, we went back to our hotel rooms. I tried to catch up on some homework, but then Marcus called me up. "Ya know something, Matt? I think the five of us guys should have a night on the town, away from the girls," he suggested on the phone. "I dunno, man, I've got homework, and it's been a while since I sent an e-mail to Sora. She might get worried." "Ah, you talk to her too much. Besides, she's not even that interesting. Not like Rika." "You really got something for her, huh?" "Well duh, she's great in bed. Who wouldn't want a piece of her, heh, besides Greg?" I thought about it. "Eh, maybe you're right. I do need to blow off some steam. OK, get the guys."

Kari

So, it was decided the guys would go spend some time in Zurich. That left Anya, Rika, and me with nothing to do. We discussed it in my suite. "Well, I guess that gives me some time to work on my homework, and write an e-mail to Tai... maybe even get a pedicure." Rika looked at me with disdain. "Trust me, you don't want a pedicure." "Ever the tomboy," Anya mused.

"Look, all I know is that I didn't come to Zurich just to stay in my hotel room before the concert. I don't know about you guys, but I'm going club hopping." "But Rika, you're only 14," I countered. "Hadn't stopped the guys." Just then, Anya pointed out some of the options at the fitness club nearby. She passed the brochure to Rika, who looked it over. She let out a deep sigh. "All right. I'll do it. We'll have this stupid girls' night at the spa."

From the cave in the Digital World, Laylamon stares at herself in a mirror as she assumes a human disguise. She applies lipstick to her lips. Lord Bagra walks in. "What in the name of King Drasil are you doing?" he wonders. "I've noticed that a few of the DigiDestined are what you might call... morally loose. I'm going to use that against them." "How so?" "It's kind of the same way Tactimon tried cornering the Child of Light, only it's better. Human teenagers are filled with all kinds of desires and passions, just waiting to be unlocked. I'm going to drive one of them over the edge onto our side." She lets out an evil smile, proud of herself.

["Boys' Night Out"

Written by Bruce Gaitsch, Will Jennings, and Timothy B. Schmit

Lead Singers: Marcus Damon (Quinton Flynn) and Layla[mon] (Cindy Robinson) with the Langstars Cafe-Bar & Backpacker-Hostel Lads and Ladettes ( Brian Beacock, Dorothy Elias-Fahn, Derek Stephen Prince, Jeff Nimoy, Doug Erholtz, Michelle Ruff, Lara Jill Miller, Stephanie Sheh, Robbie Rist, Michael Sorich, Neil Kaplan, Michael Lindsey, Colleen O'Shaughnessy, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, Michael McConnohie, and Timothy B. Schmit)]

Marcus leads the lads into the Langstars Cafe-Bar and Backpacker-Hostel. The place has an edgy, dangerous vibe about it. That's probably why Marcus likes it so much. "I haven't been in here five minutes, and I can already tell this place is sleazy," T.K. notes. "Aww get a backbone, will ya? Just get a look at those girls over there!" Marcus says, putting his arm around T.K.'s shoulder. He points out a group of girls who look looser than the average Swiss misses. Immediately, our "gogglehead" makes himself at home. The local boys look like they're having a good time, and Marcus joins them.

Marcus:

They're in heat in the heart of the city
Big wind out of Mexico
There's a girl who wants it bad as me
And I'll be right there when she lets go.

Greg and T.K.'s faces have expressions of shock on them. Marcus is going to cheat on Rika? Marcus continues to mingle among the guys, proving himself to be very much a part of this rough crowd.

Marcus:
So let it all come down
Don't care where we're going
There's trouble in this town
It's just what I need

I'm tired of looking back
No one lives forever
I'm jumping off the track
It feels good to me

Soon, he has the lads and ladettes joining him in song.

Marcus/Chorus:
Don't you know it turns your blood to wine
When you're moving so fine?

Marcus:

It's the boys' night out

Marcus quickly raises and lowers his eyebrows at a broad that passes by.

Marcus/Chorus:

You can run those lights
You can leave them on bright

Marcus:

It's the boys' night out

Greg , Thomas, and T.K. decide to get out while the getting is good when two girls make a pass at them. Matt decides to lean against the wall and stare at some of the dancing girls.

Marcus:
Kept it straight just as long as I had to
Now I've got to let it ride
There's a girl who needs love so bad
And when I'm with her I feel alive

And the only thing keeping Marcus from getting a drink is the fact this place checks for identification. That doesn't stop him from indulging in other vices, though.

Marcus:
I hear she's got some friends
They know how to use it
Oh, it never ends
You know what I mean

Any beat you choose
They can find the rhythm
They'll show us some moves
We've never seen

He continues to live it up at the pool table, and in an arm-wrestling contest.

Marcus/Chorus:
Don't you know it turns your blood to wine
When you're moving so fine?

Marcus:

It's the boys' night out

Marcus/Chorus:

You can run those lights
You can leave them on bright

He gives a lad an epic high-five between the words "night" and "out".

Marcus:

It's the boys' night out

In the meantime, we find that a young lady dressed in Goth has attracted Matt's attention. He sits by her, and she tries to entice him. It's working. Laylamon has him right where she wants him.

Layla:
There's a war between good and evil
It's not to hard to realize
There's no way you can beat the devil
'Til you look her straight in the eyes

Going back to Marcus...

Marcus:

So let it all come down
Don't care where we're going
There's trouble in this town
It's just what I need

I'm tired of looking back
No one lives forever
I'm jumping off the track
It feels good to me

Marcus/Chorus:
Don't you know it turns your blood to wine
When you're moving so fine?

Marcus continues to give free high fives as a group of girls circle around him.

Marcus:

Cause it's the boys' night out (Layla: Boys' night out!)

Marcus/Chorus:

You can run those lights
You can leave them on bright

Marcus:

And it's the boys' (Layla: Boys!) night out (Layla: Boys' night out!)

Do you remember what happened to Kari at Yokohama? Well, it's kind of like that. Layla[mon] hypnotizes Matt and installs something inside his mind, which we will see later.

Marcus/Chorus:
Don't you know it turns your blood to wine
When you're moving so fine?

Marcus:

It's the boys' night out

Marcus continues cavorting with the locals and gets more than his share of the local flavor, if you know what I mean.

Marcus/Chorus:

You can run those lights
You can leave them on bright

Marcus:

It's the boys' night out

Marcus/Chorus:
Don't you know it turns your blood to wine
When you're moving so fine?
(Layla: So fine)

Marcus:

It's the boys' night out

Marcus/Chorus:

You can run those lights
You can leave them on bright

Marcus:

It's the boys' night out

(continue to fade)

Greg

The three of us escaped with our moral sanctity still in tact. "Hey, guys. Are we really going to leave Marcus and Matt in there?" T.K. wondered. "They're big boys, T.K. They can take care of themselves. I bet they're having a better time than if we were in there," I reckoned. "Here here. Marcus can do whatever he wants, but I have no intention of associating myself with that kind of trash," Thomas agreed. So, we decided to wander around the city some more. When we visited a Swatch store, a large number of fans recognized us and we spent the next hour signing autographs. The manager was nice enough to give us free watches. They were in very decent quality. We decided to buy some more watches and Swiss army knives to mail home to Japan. International shipping was brutal, though. Tom dragged us to the multiple Nobel Prize-winning IBM Research Laboratory. That's where he gets his natural high.

We ended up at Sprüngli, this confectionery that offers really really good sweets. I tried the Luxemburgerli, a sort of soft macaroon resembling a hamburger in looks but is actually completely pastry and cream, and comes in a variety of flavors. I went for the chocolate and the hazelnut. It was superb. Superb. It was so good, I bought a package so I could share them with Veemon later. T.K. and Thomas did the same.

Rika

Kari and I couldn't get into the Holmes Place Fitness Club because we were under 16. Regulations, hmmph. Anya got to go in easily, but not us. So, I went back to my room. I sent a few texts to Marcus. You know, the whole "can't wait for you to get home" and "thinking of you, loverboy" type thing. I waited 15 minutes and he didn't respond. Then it became 30, then 45, then an hour. Renamon paced back and forth, working on a sudoku puzzle and stretching every once in a while. "It's been an hour, and I still haven't heard back from him. Something's up," I said. "Are you suspecting the worst?" "He better not be cheating on me." "I thought you two weren't exactly a couple." "We had sex, Renamon. I don't know if you've forgotten that." "I'm glad you shut the door, otherwise I'd have to carry that mental image with me for the rest of my life." "Still... heh, I guess I must care about him a little, since I don't want him to cheat on me. Gah... why do I have to be so- so-" "Tsundere?"

I tried to read the look in Renamon's eyes. I couldn't tell if it was genuine concern, or just pity. "Rika, I can go out and track Marcus down." "You'd do that for me?" "Of course." "All right. You do that." I opened the window for her, and she crawled out, then sped off. I turned off the lights and just laid there on my bed, wondering.

Anya

It was getting late, so not many people were in the whirlpool that night. After making sure the coast was clear, I let Lalamon out so she could absorb some of the steam and have a look around. "So, how are you doing, Anya?" she asked. "All right, I suppose. I am still waiting for the perfect place to admit my love for Gregorivich to him." "That's your nickname for him, huh?" "That's what his name would be in Russia. Oh, wouldn't it be romantic? Him, riding up to my house and paying my ransom. Then, the two of us holding lighted candles as the priest offers his blessings. Then, we are crowned as husband and wife." "Omigosh, you're really serious about this guy, aren't you? How do you know he'll feel the same way?" I chuckled. "I don't. But at least, I can hope he does. If only I could get him alone."

["Alone"
Written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly

Performed by Rika Nonaka (Melissa Fahn) and Anya Rădulescu (Kate Higgins)

Backing Vocal by Lalamon (Dorothy Elias-Fahn)]

We start in Rika's room. It's dark as we find her lying on her back on her bed. The music starts.

Rika:

I hear the ticking of the clock
I'm lying here, the room's pitch dark
I wonder where you are tonight
No answer on the telephone
And the night goes by so very slow
Oh, I hope that it won't end, though
Alone

She quickly gets up, turns the light on, and paces around the room, conflicted.

Rika:

Till now I always got by on my own
I never really cared until I met you
And now it chills me to the bone
How do I get you alone?
How do I get you alone?

We move to the whirlpool in the fitness club, where Anya sings to her beloved.

Anya:

You don't know how long I have wanted
To touch your lips and hold you tight, oh

Anya/Lalamon:
You don't know how long I have waited
and I was going to tell you tonight

Anya:
But the secret is still my own
and my love for you is still unknown
Alone

As we move to the chorus, we see Greg, T.K., and Thomas head back to the hotel. We then cut back to the whirlpool where Anya lets out a sort of operatic scream before the chorus. [Think Heart's version of the song.]

Anya:

Till now I always got by on my own

Anya/Rika:

I never really cared until I met you

Anya:

And now it chills me to the bone

Anya/Rika:

How do I get you alone?
How do I get you alone?

Rika continues to pace around the room, thinking of what that two-timing worm might be doing now. The screen splits to reveal the two of them in a duet.

Anya/Rika:

How do I get you alone?
How do I get you alone?

Rika:

Alone

Alone

As the song ends, Rika falls back on her bed.

Greg

We were on our way back to the hotel when we spotted Renamon jumping from lamppost to tree to whatever high spot she should jump to. That Digimon was a ninja, I tell you. She stopped and recognized us, then landed right in front of us. "Where's Marcus?" she growled. "Whoa, whoa, whoa... easy there. What's the deal?" I asked. "Rika has her... suspicions. I offered to act on them, she took me up on it."

"The last we saw Marcus and Matt, they were at the Langstars Cafe-Bar. Thomas and Greg decided to leave, and they took me with them," T.K. explained. "Hmm... tell me more about this place." "Well, it's pretty seedy from what I could tell. We didn't stay long, but I kept getting bad vibes. I just hope Matt's all right." "Then why did you leave him?" "Because Marcus made his own bed, and he should sleep in it. And that's probably just what he's doing, if you ask me," I firmly stated. Renamon's eyes were filled with horror. She quickly dashed off.

Renamon

If what Greg said was true, then Marcus has proved himself unfaithful. I can't afford to let Rika's heart be broken like this. I rushed off to the Langstars Cafe-Bar and sneaked in. Sure enough, there was Marcus enjoying the company of a blonde, with long hair and not much left to the imagination. Matt was doing the same with a girl in strange clothing. I sensed something very wrong, so I rushed back to the hotel.

I jumped up to Rika's window and gently knocked on it. She opened the window and let me in. "Rika... I hate to say this, but..." "It's true, isn't it?" I sadly nodded my head. Rika was furious. "That double-crossing, two-timing worm! Just wait until he gets back to the hotel." She picked up the phone and dialed a number. "Hello, Front Desk? This is Rika Nonaka, in one of your suites. I'm with the Teenage Wolves. How much is your vase?" She then wrote something down. "Put it on our account, I think I'm gonna use it. Thanks." Then, she hung up. "What are you planning on doing with the vase?" "Just wait and see, Renamon. Just wait and see." She then sent another text, presumably to Marcus, and helped herself to a drink from the mini bar.

About an hour later, there was a knock at the door. "Rika? You in there?" Marcus asked from behind the door. "Coming," Rika answered with a deceptively sweet voice. She picked up the vase and opened the door, then shut it behind her. I joined her, but I soon wished I hadn't.

Rika

I let my true feelings show and hurled the vase at him. It missed him, but it smashed into hundreds of pieces against the door. "So, how was your night out with the boys?!" "Look, what gives?" "Stop avoiding the question! How was she, hmm? Was she able to satisfy you the same way I do?" "What are you talking about?" "You piece of slime, I asked how that girl you were fooling around with tonight was!" "Oh... you mean Lydia. Eh, she was all right, I guess. She ended up giving me a headache from reading all her tattoos." "Well, you're going to have a headache for a long time, buddy, because you are in the doghouse!" Then, I pointed to Renamon, then slowly to Marcus. "Renamon... walk all over him." I pulled out a CD player from my room, turned it on, and hit play.

["If Looks Could Kill"

Written by Jack Conrad and Bob Garrett

Performed by Heart

Lipsynced by Rika Nonaka and Renamon]

They say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and Rika Nonaka is one woman scorned. Renamon starts pounding into Marcus. Rika takes this opportunity to conserve her voice and let the Wilson sisters take over.

Rika (lipsyncing):

Caught you in the act, can't put up with that
Messing where you shouldn't be
I wanna hear you say you're sorry
'Cause nobody takes advantage of me

You're missing the mark, shooting in the dark
I'm pulling the wool from my eyes
Baby, don't you push me further
It's gonna hurt you if it happens twice

Rika even manages to get in a few hits herself. She gets out of the way and allows Renamon to continue.

Rika: (lipsyncing)

If looks could kill
You'd be lying on the floor
You'd be begging me "Please, please
Baby, don't hurt me no more"

If looks could kill
You'd be reeling from the pain
And you'd never lie again
If looks could kill

Renamon continues to use non-lethal versions of Power Paw and Diamond Storm against Marcus, who by this point has gotten angry. This sparks a full blown battle between Digimon and human, and may heaven have mercy upon the janitor who has to clean this up.

Renamon: (lipsyncing)

You're living on the edge, hanging by a thread
I'm watching every move you make
You don't want to see my anger
So don't you make another mistake

Love is on the line, I ain't about to be kind
That's a promise and a threat
If I was you, I'd really cool it
Or risk a night you'll never forget

Greg, Thomas and T.K. walk in on this, and quickly get to safety while the getting is good. Those are what we call three smart young men.

Rika/Renamon: (lipsyncing)

If looks could kill
You'd be lying on the floor
You'd be begging me "Please, please
Darlin', don't hurt me no more"

If looks could kill
You'd be reeling from the pain
And you'd never lie again
If looks could kill

The two are evenly matched, despite the fact Renamon is seven feet tall and has claws. Rika decides to cut off the CD player.

Rika

"All right, that's enough! He's had enough punishment. Marcus... I don't ever want to hear you've been seeing another woman. You claimed me first." "Aww come on, Rika. Men have no self-control when it comes to sexual arousal. Besides, it's not like we actually have anything." My eyes widened. "How dare you!" I turned in a huff and walked back into my room. Renamon followed me.

Renamon

Rika was absolutely livid, and I couldn't blame her at all. I didn't want to hurt Marcus, but she gave me the orders, and I followed them. But what happened was wrong. I had to do something. "Rika... you are my human partner, and I will follow your orders to the letter. The pain in my heart right now cuts far worse than any attack I gave Marcus. Deep down, I know you feel the same way." She quietly undressed and changed into her sleep attire. "I- I'm just not sure. I want to say you're right, but, I'm just not sure."

T.K.

We didn't see Matt until the next morning at breakfast. He was quiet and brooding over something. Something was just off about him, but I couldn't put my finger on it. He didn't talk much, and he just seemed cold and distant. Maybe even distracted. Every time I asked him what was up, he brushed me off with a "Had a long night, don't want to talk about it." During the concert that night, he was hyper competent, hitting every bar every time. The gig was a major success, but he didn't say much to the press afterward.

I knew one thing for sure. Something was wrong.

Author's Notes:

Next chapter is it. We're going to Stuttgart for a battle nobody will forget. Somebody's going to hit Ultimate the right way... and the wrong way.

I decided to simplify the arrangement for "End of the Road" to make it easier on myself. I can't keep track of the counterpoint in the second and third chorus.

I decided to allow Rika to lipsync "If Looks Could Kill" because "Alone" is a notoriously difficult song to belt out. Somebody should give Ms. Fahn some lemon tea.
