Scarf

Maka had laughed when she found the knitting needles and a cloth bag full of every color and texture yarn imaginable. She teased Soul, asking if he knew how to knit and made socks for himself during the winters if his toes got cold. He was rather indignant about the entire matter and pouted for the rest of the afternoon. It took her a while to sort the yarn, he had an abundance of rich jewel tones and several finely spin balls of white and at the very bottom there were three balls of deep red yarn and Maka knew exactly what she was going to make first.

Whenever Soul questioned what she was doing instead of reading she brushed him off saying she was making socks for herself since her toes were always cold. He usually shrugged and left her alone to go off and do dragon things. It took her a while to get started, she was out of practice and it had been years since she'd had to start one without her mother to help with the first row. After a few messy starts she was finally making progress.

The few times they'd gone out, Soul had always pulled the hood of his cloak close to the back of his neck to keep the wind from it. Maka was sure that he had scarves somewhere but was just too lazy to find one, so she had decided to make him one.

The red was perfect for his eyes and the yarn was soft enough that it wouldn't irritate his neck. It was decently wide and Maka was hoping to make it long enough that he could wrap it around a few times. She was careful to hide it in her nest or under a blanket so he wouldn't see it, Maka really wanted to be able to surprise him.

He was making tea for himself and his little one when he heard Maka come up behind him. Soul figured she was just checking to make sure he would put extra honey in hers but instead she draped something around his neck. He glanced down when she wrapped it around again; he hadn't seen this scarf in his hoard, though the deep red color looked familiar. "Little one? What are you doing? If you're going to choke me to death, do it in my sleep?"

"Hush, Soul…I made you a scarf."

"You made this for me?" Soul was astounded, he had noticed that she was knitting furiously the past few days but he had never suspected she was making him a scarf.

"Yes! So you better like it! Or, I hope you like it…I thought, I'd hoped you'd like it. I'm going to go take a bath." Maka could feel herself turn as red as the scarf with each word. How stupid was she to think he'd like a hand knit scarf of only decent wool. He was a dragon; he probably had a million scarves of Eastern silks and Southern cottons, he didn't need her scarf. Going and hiding in the bath seemed like the best plan.

Before she could, Soul hugged her to him. "Thank you, little one. It has been a very long time since someone made something so precious for me." He took one of the loops and placed it around her head as well and kissed her cheek. "I will treasure it."

Maka smiled at him and then hid against his chest to listen to him purr. "You're very welcome, Soul."
