Cammie POV
There was a moment where time seemed to just stand still as Alexa stared at this woman before her, out the corner of my eye I saw Zach take a worried step back behind Seth and I to try and not be recognised.
"Lena?" The woman said to her and I saw the sadness in Alexa's blue eyes. I cast a glance at Zach who mumbled what I think was 'Anne', whoever that was. I could see Seth glance anxiously around, knowing what we all knew that any second we'd be swarmed with Circle members and we'd have lost our chance to escape. I couldn't help but think about the chess analogy that Collins made, we were in check now and if we didn't move our piece it would be game over, check-mate.
"What are you doing here? It's been so long, I didn't know what had happened to you." Anne asked Alexa, who blinked back into reality suddenly.
"I know, and I'm so sorry Anne, it's a long long story." Alexa looked like she was about to cry and tried to compose herself.
"I have the time?" Anne offered desperately, I didn't know who she was or how they knew each other but it was clear they had a deep history, and they cared about one another a lot.
"But I don't." Alexa said at last, she forced the words out her mouth like they were a bad taste. Anne looked heartbroken and pulled Alexa into a hug, they looked like they didn't want to let go of one another.
"Are you sure you don't have time to catch up?" She pleaded, pinching her lips together. Alexa looked back at the three of us stood awkwardly out of the way, Seth shook his head ever so slightly and Alexa took a deep breath.
"No, I'm so sorry Anne." She said, looking back at the sad woman I still didn't know. Anne's eyes wandered from our friends till they rested on Zach, who had his head bowed at an angle behind Seth's back.
"I guessed you might have something to do with all of this, what did you get her into this time? Put anyone else into the hospital?" Anne glared.
"Nice to see you too Anne." He said ever so guiltily.
"He's what got you into this mess in the first place Lena, why are you still friend with him?" She turned her attention back to Alexa, who sighed.
"It's-"
"If you say a long story so help me Helena-" She scolded like a mother, maybe Anne was one of her foster parents? They seemed close.
"How about this," Alexa smiled a bit. "I'll explain where I've been, if you give us a lift."
"Lift where?" Anne asked, coming to terms with the proposal.
"Anywhere but here." Seth said, looking down the street worriedly at the large black van pulling up outside Collins' house.
"Deal." Anne said after 10 second that felt so much longed. She pulled her keys out and clicked the button, a car on the other side of the road flashed its orange lights. We all quickly piled in before Anne had even crossed the street.
"So who is that again?" I asked Cammie, who had ended up in the passengers seat while I was wedged between the boys in the small back of this old red five seater. She turned around so that she was looking back at the three of us.
"My old foster mother when I was living in Castor Village, I didn't expect to see her again." She admitted, shutting up as soon as Anne took her seat in the car. Without a word she forcefully turned on the engine and drove off down the road, away from Doctor Collins and away from some of our troubles, but it was far from over yet.
We drove in silence, Alexa looking in her wing mirror every few seconds to check if we had a tail. After about 15 minutes of aimless driving, which was clearly annoying Anne, Alexa gave us the all clear and I could feel the bodies on both sides of me relaxing. "Now will you tell me what's going on?" Anne spoke for the first time, pulling into the car park of a small sparse parking lot on the edge of the village where we directed her to once we were sure we weren't being followed. "Is someone following, should I call the police? Please just talk to me, maybe I can help." Alexa inhaled slowly.
"First of all, please don't call me Lena." She began with breaking down everything Anne already knew, or thought she knew about her foster daughter. "My name, is Alexa." Anne nodded, but she didn't seem surprised.
"I was wondering which it was, Helena, Alexa, Kellie..." She went on with a list of legends Alexa had presumably had at some point over the last few years, I could see on Zach's face that he remembered some of them, even I remembered Kellie. It seemed like such a long time ago, almost a life time, that she had introduced herself to us by that name before all of this started.
"How do you know all that?" Seth asked when Alexa remained silent, Anne turned and gave him a once over.
"I found a stash of passports and ID cards tucked away behind a fake back panel in your closet a few days before you left." Her eyes had gone back to Alexa. "Doctor Collins kindly filled me in on the rest a few days after you left." She revealed, putting a caring hand on her shoulder as I felt Seth shift his arm behind him, to where he had placed his gun, I felt the tension in the car grow, everyone was waiting for the other to say something.
"Alexa." I said to her, trying to get her to snap out of the trance she appeared to be in. "We have to go. Now." I told her slowly. She looked up at Anne.
"Are you working with them?" She demanded of the woman she most likely looked up to as a mother. "How long till they get here? Is that why you're here in Moon instead of Caster, to spy on us?" Anne blinked in surprise, she clearly didn't know what Alexa was talking about.
"L-Alexa. I just meant that he told me you and your friend were dangerous and that I was to call him as soon as I saw you again." Anne admitted reluctantly.
"And have you?" Zach had his left hand on the door handle, ready to get out. Anne was confused by what was going on. She pulled out her phone and shook her head.
"No, I promise I haven't. Why is it so important?" Alexa took the phone off her in a flash and gave it to me. "What are you doing?"
"We need to make a call, quickly and then we'll be out of your way for good, I promise." Alexa promised her, squeezing the hand on her shoulder. I knew who to call so I climbed over Zach and got out of the car, dialing Liz's number that I knew by heart.
