Cammie POV
We'd swapped drivers in the very earlier hours of the next morning, Seth was at the wheel and Zach was looking at all of Alexa's scribbles on the map. At that stop we had grabbed a couple of cold sandwiches each and a lot of coffee, which we all drank happily park outside an all night gas station. The guy behind the till didn't even bother asking what a bunch of teenagers were doing grabbing food at 2:35 am covered in filth and in desperate need of a shower, he only cared about the money we gave him for what we bought.
At the back of the shop there were also some cheap clothes, so me and Alexa bought a t-shirt and a pair of jeans each, along with much needed underwear, socks and bras, our shoes were okay so we didn't spend more money than needed. But we did buy a hair brush, agree it was much needed for everyone. Zach and Seth also bought a shirt each, only Zach bought jeans and Seth bought a pair of dark brown walking trousers. Bex decided she didn't really need any clothes, the nurses had already given her the clothes she was wearing.
Once we'd all piled back into the small feeling rented car and had devoured all the food and caffeine we'd bought Seth refilled the tank and off we went again, switching on the lights in the car so Zach could see the map.
"So which line am I following?" He asked Alexa, who was sat where Seth had been seated.
"The red one." She told him sleepily, curling up in the warmth of the seat she was in. I did the same, exhausted from driving, resting my head on Bex's shoulder as we pushed together for warmth and comfort.
The next time I woke up the light was shining in my eyes and I had to squint through the glare. Alexa was already up, stretching and pointing at the map in Zach's hand, saying something about taking the next turning at a services sign for lunch.
"Lunch?" Bex yawned, clicking her neck and checking her bandages. "I thought we were stopping for fuel and breakfast?" Seth smirked at the wheel.
"You three were all fast asleep so me and Zach grabbed an energy bar or two, some coffee and the fuel. About 5 hours ago." He said, gesturing with one hand to the energy bar rappers and empty coffee cups that had begun to collect on the floor of the passengers seat.
"Wow is it really 13:55." Cammie stated, looking at the clock next to the steering wheel. Seth turned up a steep road pointing to at 24 hour services at advertised MacDonald's deals and it almost made me drool. My stomach growled loudly and I realised that a couple of cold sandwiches didn't really make up for days of barely eating anything.
"Well I don't know about you guys." Bex said as we pulled up in a free parking space. "But I could kill for a full English breakfast right about now." We laughed and it seemed the sliver-lining in our seemingly black cloud was getting bigger, almost like the clouds were departing.
We poured out of the car and Zach locked up, helping Seth bin all our rubbish from the night before and theirs from the morning.
"I just need food that doesn't taste like feet and soggy bread, however last night it tasted like heaven." Alexa said, catching Bex's arm to steady her a little, though she insisted she was fine.
We all made our way to the glorious M sign and the smell of fat and salt filled our lungs. Time went by pretty fast in there, we ate a few meals each and didn't care how messy we looked to people around us.
Never had a MacDonalds double cheese burger tasted so damn good. I worked my way through three McCafe Ice Teas and 1 black coffee, pausing occasionally to bin the rubbish on our table so we had room for more.
After we'd all finished we looked at each other and smiled, I noticed we'd been doing that a lot lately, more than in a long long time. "As much as I hate to say it but we should be off, it's about 15/16 miles from the safe house and then it's all over." Zach added, taking the last gulp of his cappuccino and wiping his mouth.
I was the first to get up, followed by Alexa who took her coffee to go. There was an air of relaxation and confidence about us as we left the service station and went back to the car, but all that went away one we saw two men standing about our car, peering through the window. One of the moved and the wind caught his blue canvas coat, revealing a silver gun in his belt.
I back up to Bex, feeling the urge to protect her at all cost. I knew she hated feeling helpless but I couldn't do anything about that right now.
Zach and Seth also seemed to stand in font of us three girl. Alexa cursed that they'd left all their defense in the glove compartment. "I take it you two genius' missed a tail while we were a sleep." Bex said dryly. They didn't reply.
"You know what?" I said. "I'm sick of this." I walked a head of the rest of the group and marched straight to the more than likely Circle Of Cavan members.
They looked surprised when they saw me but recovered quick enough to try and draw their guns, I grabbed the one in blue's arm and twisted it behind him as he tried to elbow me in the gut. Zach came quickly and punched the other square in the face, he staggered back and spat out blood, pulling his gun and aiming at Zach's head. Seth pulled Zach away just as the bullet smashing into the car next to us. Alexa came up from behind and jump over blues leg as it swung beneath her, she kicked for the face but he caught it, pulling her over and jumping on top of her.
I picked up at stone from the side of the road and threw it desperately at him, hitting his shoulder hard enough to give Alexa the edge. She put her leg around his and rolled him over, kneeing him somewhere very painful and using the rock I had used to render him unconscious.
I pulled her up to see the other guy trying and failing to shoot the boys, Seth aimed a kick the shin and he tumbling, firing a flailing shot that narrowly missed a woman with a baby, who screamed.
"We need to leave." Seth threw me the keys and I quickly unlock the car. Bex turned and punch the other guy in the face, he crumpled in front of me.
"That felt good." She breathed heavily, climbing in the passengers seat as people started the approach the car, curious as to what just happened. The rest of us jumped in the back and Alexa revved the engine, reversing recklessly and speeding out of the car park, almost hitting a few people on the way out. Bex open the map and used her finger to find where we were.
"Turn left." She said and Alexa swerved left.
"Please tell me you know how to drive." I said, know she did but she wasn't doing a very good job. She pulled out onto the motor way again and drove at the right speed, gripping the wheel too tightly.
"We're fine, lets just get there now, no stops." Zach said and I couldn't help but agree, I'd had just about enough of this entire ordeal.
