Chapter 41: Daniel Baritone
It was only nine o'clock in the morning when I was ordered to get dressed for the next part of the trial. My lawyer, Daniel Baritone, walked into my cell nearly thirty minutes later with his unusual grin and heavy-weight briefcase.
"You said you had something for me." He said, setting the briefcase down on the table and pointing to the chair across from him. I sat down and he followed, glancing at the guards next to the door.
"Yeah. A flash drive." I said as I pulled it out of my pocket. His brow went up and he glanced back and forth between me and the small piece of metal and plastic.
"Please tell me that that little thing's going to prove your innocence or you're just wasting my precious time."
"I'm not innocent. Not even close. But I didn't kill him. I swear to God. And this thing will prove it. Along with all the other murders and suspected suicides you have in your database that is linked to me or to the group led by the Phantom."
"You do know that I'm a defense lawyer. This flash drive does nothing but fail me in this case." I laughed lightly.
"I'm a smart ass bitch who's a suspect in a multiple murder cases, supposedly kidnapped Oliver Queen's adopted son, and has thirty two known alias and counting, and you still took me on. I guess lawyer's aren't only bitchy and mean, they're also ignorant, naïve, and downright stupid."
"Are we really going to go there?"
"Hell yeah. You know that I'm not going to make it out of this courtroom free. You know that I'll be in chains. You know that the government wants me either in a high security lockdown facility or dead. You knew that you were going to fail as a defense attorney, especially with my stupid case. But if you want my opinion, and I doubt you do but I'll give it to you anyway, you take this flash drive, you get every damn piece of information down on hard copy and you walk into that courtroom with your head held high. Your job is not to defend my rights as a citizen anymore, its to take down that bastard I called a father and everyone else who still stands by his side today."
"You know, you should've become an attorney yourself. You're pretty damn good with speeches."
"I learned from the best, which also happens to be the worst."
"I'll take your word for it." We stood up and shook hands. "I cannot believe that I just shook hands with the guilty."
"Hey, right now, the enemy of your enemy is your friend. And right now, cherish this moment, because pretty soon, neither of us are going to hate the same person at the same time."
He smiled and nodded and I felt relieved. Daniel was taking my word. He was trusting me as to the information on the flash drive. And right then Aaron's life was on the line. If he had fucked with that SD card or noted my father about it, I'd make every single second of my pathetic life be dedicated to bringing his ass down and probably killing him. But for now, all I could do was hope. And only if Aaron was right, would I be sentenced to a few years in prison. But if he was wrong, God help me when I entered that courtroom.
