Recap

[T.K.] We were trying out new covers for our next album, and Kari didn't like the Billy Joel song she sang lead on. In the meantime, Izzy and Commander Sampson went back to Congress to plead their case. Greg bought an engagement ring for Anya, but then had this weird date planned out, including some time in an isolation tank. Sasha and Malia, President Obama's daughters, got Digimon of their own named Strabimon and Flamemon. The president nearly had a heart attack. Greg and Anya went on a date, but it didn't turn out as planned when Zamielmon trapped Greg in his tank! It was up to Anya to save him, and she used her sincere feelings of love to activate Rosemon's Burst Mode and finish him off. In the end, she proposed to Greg. In the meantime, I came up with a theory based on what Azulongmon said about Kari and me. Our hearts have to become one, but how are we gonna do that?

Chapter 52: The Executive Order

Izzy

Sasha and Malia were our two newest recruits, and even I didn't see this coming. The commander and I took it upon ourselves to train them in the art of DigiSoul mastery and Digimon taming in general. We held after-school classes in the backyard, and had Mr. Caulfield join us as he was a relative novice. All of us were dressed in our DATS uniforms.

"Now, ladies, what do you already know about Digimon?" I began. Sasha raised her hand. "Digimon are Digital Monsters that come from the Digital World, a world parallel to our own," she said. I nodded once. "Yes."

Commander Sampson cleared his throat. "Er, Koushiro, it would be safe to assume for the moment that everyone here knows where a Digimon comes from and so on. I believe you should move on to the more practical parts of the lesson." I continued, "Right. Now, the main things you really have to learn are how to use your Digivice and how to ignite and control your DigiSoul. What is DigiSoul, you ask? It's a visible aura created by a human's soul, a physical manifestation of a human partner's emotions that they can send to their Digimon to prompt Digivolution. To put it another way, DigiSoul is one's emotions converted into pure energy."

I ignited enough DigiSoul to cover my hand. "This is DigiSoul. With enough practice and discipline, you can ignite your own." I walked to Mr. Caulfield. "Now, Maxwell, would you like to demonstrate for the class?" "Right," he said. He held an imaginary lighter, or an imaginary detonator trigger. Then, he "lit" it, and his DigiSoul ignited in his hand. The Obama girls oohed and ahhed. We extinguished our hands.

After I explained it to them, they wanted to try it for themselves. So, I led them through it. Sasha brought her hand in front of her, while Malia brought her hand up to the sky. "Your hand should feel warm," I said for Malia's benefit. After a bit of concentration, the DigiSoul ignited in their hands. They became very excited, much like girls at their age do.

After practicing a few times, the girls summoned their Digimon for the first time using the Digivice ic5 Links I made for them. Malia, being the oldest, went first. "Flamemon, realize!" She was followed by Sasha. "Strabimon, realize!" Their Digimon appeared from their Digivices.

I questioned Flamemon first. "So, Flamemon, how do you like Malia?" "Eh, she's pretty cool, I guess. She taught me how to do something called the Harlem Shake." He popped his shoulders and opposite arms wildly. Strabimon was far more stoic, as he kissed Sasha's hand. "My sworn duty is to protect and serve you, Sasha," he said. Sasha blushed. This was going much better than I thought it would go. Mr. Caulfield was next. "Candlemon, realize!" Candlemon appeared from the Digivice. I summoned Tentomon, while Kudamon was already watching on the commander's neck.

I continued, "All right now. Hopefully by now, you've established some sort of a bond between yourself and your Digimon. That channel of trust is important, because you never want to force Digivolution onto a Digimon. Draw on that bond, and those positive emotions."

The girls were ahead of me as they struck defensive stances and ignited their DigiSoul. "Ready, Flamemon?" Malia asked. Flamemon got in position and called back, "Let's do this!" "What about you, Strabimon?" Sasha added. Strabimon moved into position. "Always ready!"

"Candlemon, to... battle?" Mr. Caulfield wondered as he ignited his hand with DigiSoul. "Yes, are we all Digivolving at this point?" Candlemon asked. "I guess you three are," Tentomon answered. That was enough for them.

I went on, "Very good. Now, place your hand on top of the Digivice and repeat after me. 'DigiSoul, charge!'"

Malia went first as she pressed her ignited hand on the sensor. "DigiSoul... charge!" She brought the Digivice forward, and Flamemon took the power in. "Flamemon Digivolve to... Raaaagh! Agunimon!" This Digimon resembled a human wearing dragon armor that was reminiscent of Greymon.

Sasha was next. "DigiSoul... charge!" "Strabimon Digivolve to... Lobomon!" This new Digimon resembled a human wearing wolf themed armor that vaguely resembled Garurumon.

Mr. Caulfield followed. "Our turn, Candlemon! DigiSoul... charge!" "Candlemon Digivolve to... Wizardmon!"

We quickly moved to a concrete area to avoid setting anything ablaze. The three started sparring with each other. "Electro Squall!" Wizardmon summoned a thunder cloud that struck down, but Lobomon gathered the energy into the weapon on his left fist. "Howling Laser!" He fired a burst of light energy at Wizardmon, who deflected it with his Magical Game. Agunimon went on the attack. "Pyro Tornado!" He used a fiery tornado to spin himself around quickly, and then struck Lobomon with a roundhouse kick.

"Come on, Agunimon! You can do it!" Malia cheered. The battle went on until Commander Sampson blew a whistle. By then, all three were tired. The girls and Mr. Caulfield brought them back into their Digivices.

Kudamon took the opportunity to speak. "Well done, all three of you. As you continue to bond with your Digimon, the three of you will continue to grow together in power. Now, Natasha, Malia, there are a few basic ground rules you must understand. First, a Digimon is not something to show off to your friends or the press. Second, never use your Digimon or DigiSoul for personal gain. And finally, a true Digimon tamer responds to a threat with an appropriate amount of force."

"Force? We never use force, do we, Malia?" Sasha asked. Malia shook her head. "Uh uh. They don't teach us that in school. We go to a Quaker school, and we believe in cooperation and nonviolence, and stuff like that."

I contemplated it. "Hmm... so, you two seem to have a lot in common with T.K. and Kari. Stay right here for just a minute. I'll go get them." I ran inside the mansion and searched for those two.

I found T.K. and Rika bonding over a game of pool in the Game Room. "T.K.! So glad I found you. I was wondering if you might explain your battle philosophy to Sasha and Malia." "Huh? My battle philosophy?" he wondered. "How you're a lover, not a fighter." "Oh. OK. Rika, go ahead and make your shot. I'll be back."

After asking around, we found Kari in her bedroom, polishing her fingernails. "Kari! Would you please help us out for a minute?" I asked. "Sure, Izzy. What can I do?" "We need you to explain your battle philosophy. Sasha and Malia go to a Quaker school where they learn nonviolence and the like." "Oh, all right. Gives me a chance to dry my fingernails." She joined us.

We made it back to the others where the two Obama girls told us all about what their school taught them, including equality and simplicity. "Did you know Richard Nixon was a Quaker?" Sasha asked us. T.K. answered, "No, I didn't. Anyway, it sounds like you two believe in a lot of the same things we do. I don't like to fight either. I mean, not like Marcus does. I prefer to be more peaceful. I think what Izzy and Kudamon are trying to say is, you need to use your skills to defend others who are in need of protection, human or Digimon. Nonviolence is OK, but sometimes you have to fight in order to protect those people you love." Kari added, "I think what you two are learning is great. We need more people like you in the world. Just don't ever be afraid to fight for others if you have to." They understood.

Greg

The launch party for our second album, D.T.R., was moved to the night after Anya proposed to me. The press was just buzzing to find out about our engagement. We went into the interview together and took turns answering questions. Everyone from "Entertainment Tonight" to MTV to People wanted to know. After a year or two, the press gets to be not such a big deal. You just answer their questions and move on. If you don't like their question, you answer it off the record. If they put it on the record anyway, then you get a free pass to sue them.

Everyone who was anyone showed up at our launch party, including P!nk (pronounced "Pink"). Her real name was Alecia, she just got her stage name from Mr. Pink of the movie Reservoir Dogs. She sought out Rika, who admitted that Pink was one of her major influences in her vocal and songwriting style. That touched her enough to where she asked Rika to join her on stage for a performance. Boy, did she jump at the opportunity.

["Sober (Live Version)"

Written by Alecia Beth Moore, Nate "Danja" Hills, Kara DioGuardi, and Marcella Araica

Performed by Rika Ishida (Melissa Fahn) with P!nk ]

The band acts as backup as Rika starts off with the first verse and chorus. The crowd cheers in spurts throughout.

Rika:

I don't wanna be the girl who laughs the loudest
Or the girl who never wants to be alone
I don't wanna be that call at 4 o'clock in the morning
'Cos I'm the only one you know in the world that won't be home

Ahh, the sun is blinding
I-I stayed up again
Ohhhh, I am finding
That that's not the way I want my story to end

I'm safe
Up high
Nothing can touch me
But why do I feel this party's over?
No pain
Inside
You're my protection
So how do I feel this good sober?

There's a brief silence after P!nk's first line, after which the song and instrumentation picks up again. The audience seems to enjoy it.

P!nk:
I don't wanna be the girl who has to fill the silence
The quiet scares me 'cause it screams the truth
Please don't tell me that we had that conversation
But I won't remember, save your breath, 'cos what's the use?

The two play off each other very effectively.

Rika:
Ahhhh, the night is calling

P!nk:
And it whispers to me, softly, "Come and play"

Rika/P!nk:
But ah, I am falling

Rika:
And if I let myself go, I'm the only one to blame

Rika/P!nk:
I'm safe
Up high
Nothing can touch me
But why do I feel this party's over?
(
P!nk: Whoa whoa whoa) No pain
Inside
You're like perfection
But how do I feel this good sober?

Rika:
Coming down, coming down, coming down
Spinning 'round, spinning 'round, spinning 'round
I'm looking for myself – sober

P!nk:

I'm coming down, coming down, coming down
Spinning 'round, spinning 'round, spinning 'round

Rika/P!nk:
Looking for myself – sober
When it's good, then it's good, it's so good till it goes bad

P!nk:
Till you're trying to find the you that you once had

Rika:
I have heard myself cry, "Never again"

Rika/P!nk:
Broken down in agony and just tryin' to find a friend

P!nk and Rika operate the stage very well.

Rika:
Oh

Oh Oh

Rika/P!nk:
I'm safe
Up high
Nothing can touch me (
P!nk: Nothing can touch me)
But why do I feel this party's over? (
Rika: But why do I feel this party's over?)
No pain (
P!nk: No)
Inside (
P!nk: No)
You're like perfection
But how do I feel this good sober? (
P!nk: How do I feel this good sober?)

I'm safe
Up high
(Rika: No pain)
Nothing can touch me
But why do I feel this party's over?
(
Rika: Whoa whoa whoa) No pain
Inside
You're like perfection
But how do I feel this good sober? (
P!nk: How do I feel this good sober?)

P!nk ends up with her arm around Rika's shoulder, and high-fiving everyone in the group. The audience cheers.

Greg

After the song, we hung out some more at the punch bowl. Kari poured herself a glass. "You know, that song was really dark. It gave me the creeps, Pink. Don't you have anything lighter, more upbeat?" she asked. "Well, there is 'Raise Your Glass'. That's supposed to be a celebration of all the losers and underdogs who don't fit in the popular crowd. And then... hah hah, one of my first hits, 'Get This Party Started'. But yeah, most of my tracks are pretty dark. I'm pretty fu- messed up." She took a gulp.

"That reminds me. Rika, I got a chance to listen to the album, and I really like 'True Love'. I was wondering if I could add that to my setlist. We are on the same label." "Sure, why not?" Rika agreed. The two of them shook on it.

Anya left to answer a phone call. When she came back, she pulled me to the side. "What is it?" I asked. "Greg, that was my father. I told him about our engagement, and he wants to meet you. He is not happy about the circumstances leading up to it. I have broken several traditions, and he will get on to the two of us about this. Please, I beg you, don't mess this up." "When's he coming?" "Tomorrow afternoon." "Really? Tomorrow afternoon? That's when we do our interviews. Ugh." "I'm sorry." I tapped my fingers on the wall, thinking.

Before bed that night, we had one rehearsal for Monday. It was based on the theory that helped save Anya. If Lalamon's Sing a Song attack could bring her partner out from darkness, then maybe it could be used to convince Congress to support us. However, as we were tuning our instruments, President Obama walked in, and handed Matt a piece of paper. "It's done," he said. Matt read it, and his eyes widened. "It's an executive order." "Precisely. Seeing as how my daughters have been drawn into this fight, fate has forced my hand. Your organization now has the full support of the United States Government against the threat of this Bagra Army. I'll probably catch hell for this, but it doesn't matter. I have no other choice." Kari gave him a big hug. "Thank you so much, Mr. President!" Suddenly, Barack Obama didn't seem like such a bad guy after all. Even if he is a Democrat.

The next day was Saturday, and that's traditionally when interviews are taped for the various Sunday public affairs shows that air on American TV. We drew straws to see who would go where, and I ended up on Fox News Sunday. I wore my suit just for the occasion, and Veemon looked really cool with his neck tie. The makeup made him sneeze. Chris Wallace is an all right guy, but I think I talked too much about my relationship with Anya for his liking. I did get to drop a bombshell. "I have, Mr. Wallace, a copy of an executive order signed by the man himself, President Barack Obama!" I declared as I held up the copy. I let him look at it. "Well I'll be. You're absolutely right, this is an executive order. How did this come about?" Veemon and I told him the whole thing. I figured, why not? Everyone's finding out about this anyway, why not lay it all out on the table?

I quickly found out why after the interview, when Commander Sampson gave us the third degree. "Do you realize what you've done?" he asked. "Uhhhhh..." "You endangered the lives of the president's children!" "Hey, hey, uh, Commander... it's, it's all going to come out anyway. There's nowhere to hide now that this order's passed. It's inevitable." The commander sighed. "I suppose you're right. I had hoped we could continue this operation with some manner of subtlety." "Well, sir, hope really isn't your department. That's more along the lines of T.K..." "You know what I meant."

Suddenly, something came to my mind. "And when I think about it, Marcus is absolutely right. I hate to admit it, but he was right. We don't need to get the government involved in this. We need to do our job and kick butt, whether the government supports us or not. Isn't that really what we are? Isn't that why we were given Digimon partners? To fight alongside them, to develop bonds with them? We don't need a bureaucracy to tell us how to fight evil." Veemon angrily took off his tie. "Yeah! So you can take this tie and shove it!" he shouted as he threw the tie in Kudamon's face.

I got up and walked towards the door. "Hey! Where do you think you're going, young man?" the commander shouted. "To meet my future father-in-law. Don't worry, I'll be back." I sent Veemon back into his Digivice, clipped it to my belt, and opened the door to walk out.

Sampson

As much as I hated to admit it, Gregory had a point. Why is it that everyone has valid points? I'm the commander, I'm the only one whose points really should be valid. No, that's illogical thinking.

Izzy

The trial run of Sasha and Malia's Digivices had been a success. All they needed were last-minute adjustments and tweaks in order to run more effectively. Constructing a Digivice from scratch is not the easiest thing in the world to do, especially on your own. I had to rely on all the skills that Gennai had taught me, my excellent memory, and the plans I had sketched by hand to make them. Every algorithm had to be perfect.

While developing and building the ic5 Bursts, I discovered that the gloves I wore in the Digital World the first time were worn out. So, I purchased larger ones in the same shade of light yellow. They come in very handy when working with heat-producing tools.

["To Life" (from Fiddler on the Roof)

Written by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick

Performed by Ivan Rădulescu (Jim Cummings) and Greg Logan (Doug Erholtz) with the Russian House Drinkers and Russian Diplomats ( Dave Mallow, Derek Stephen Prince, Doug Erholtz, Richard Cansino, Michael Sorich, Neil Kaplan, Jim Cummings, Paul St. Peter, R. Martin Klein, Robbie Rist, Skip Stellerecht, Crispin Freeman, Michael McConnohie, and Robert Axelrod) and Lead Russian Diplomat (Stephen Lee Anderson)]

At the Russian House Restaurant and Bar, Ivan and Greg sit at a booth facing each other. Ivan Rădulescu is an average-looking Russian mediator and diplomat, specializing in global conflict. He is tall, yet slightly muscular. He thinks carefully. So far, the meeting has gone reasonably well. After many prolonged moments of silence, he says, "You know, Gregorivich... the more that I consider it, you are not a bad match for my daughter. You are intelligent, wealthy... the one thing that truly bothers me is that you are a musician." "I have an Associate's Degree in Creative Writing," Greg quickly says. "Ah, so you write. Very good. Don't you ever lose your job." He turns around and shouts, "Waiter! A bottle of vodka! Russian Diamond Gold!" Greg adds, "And a bottle of Mello Yello!" They are promptly served. They pour their own shot glasses. "Here's to our prosperity," Ivan begins. They toast and drink (Greg the Mello Yello, Ivan the vodka). "To our good health and happiness!" They toast and drink again, with Greg going straight for the bottle. "And most important of all..." Ivan grunts and motions for Greg to share some of his Mello Yello, which he does. "Well..."

Ivan:

To life, to life, l'chaim

They drink again.

Ivan/Greg:
L'chaim, l'chaim, to life

Ivan:
Here's to the father I've tried to be

Greg:
Here's to my bride to be

Greg motions for another Mello Yello.

Ivan/Greg:
Drink, l'chaim, to life, to life, l'chaim

Greg and Ivan each take another shot.

Ivan:

L'chaim, l'chaim, to life
Life has a way of confusing us

Greg:
Blessing and bruising us

Ivan/Greg:
Drink, l'chaim, to life

Ivan:
God would like us to be joyful
Even when our hearts lie panting on the floor

A now intoxicated Ivan starts laughing during Greg's verse.

Greg:
How much more can we be joyful
When there's really something
To be joyful for?

Ivan/Greg:
To life, to life, l'chaim

Ivan:
To Anya, my daughter

Greg:
My wife!
It gives you something to think about

Ivan:
Something to drink about

Ivan/Greg:
Drink, l'chaim, to life

Ivan and Greg approach the bar. Greg shouts, "Bartender! Or whatever you'd be called in Russian! Drinks for everybody, except this guy. I think he's had too much vodka." "What's the occasion?" the bartender asks. "I'm engaged to be married!" Greg announces. "Who's the lucky one?" "Anya, Ivan's... youngest?" "Da!" Ivan replies. The entire crowd responds with "Mazeltov!" "And who might you be?" the bartender asks. "Greg Logan!" The bartender starts pouring drinks for everyone.

Drinker #1:

To Greg Logan!

Ivan:

To Ivan!

Drinker #2 (to Ivan):

To Anya, your daughter

Greg:

My wife!

All of a sudden, it's one big party in there, with alcohol for everyone (except Greg). Everyone toasts and sings. Ivan manages to get a huge bottle of schnapps and starts chugging it down.

Drinkers:

May all your futures be pleasant ones
Not like our present ones
Drink, l'chaim, to life
To life, l'chaim (
Ivan: l'chaim)
L'chaim, l'chaim, to life
It takes a wedding to make us say
"Let's live another day"

Drinkers/Ivan:

Drink, l'chaim, to life

Drinkers:
We'll raise a glass and sip a drop of schnapps
In honor of the great good luck
That favored you
We know that
When good fortune favors two such men
It stands to reason we deserve it too

To us and our good fortune
Be happy, be healthy, long life (
Ivan: Life!)
And if our good fortune never comes
Here's to whatever comes
Drink, l'chaim, to life!

Ivan stands up and starts doing a traditional Russian Jewish hora as the staff clears away some tables. Greg shrugs and figures, "Why not?" Then, he joins in with the other dancers. For all intents and purposes, the choreography is the same as the 1971 film version.

Greg/Ivan/Drinkers:

Dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai
Dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai
Dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai
Dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai

Everything stops when another Russian diplomat commands the performance with his long note. A group of other Russians clap along in time. They get faster the second go-round as they take half the stage.

Lead Russian Diplomat:

Zaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa chava zdarovia
Heaven bless you both nazdrovia
To your health and may we live together in peace

Zachava zdarovia
Heaven bless you both nazdrovia
To your health and may we live together in peace

Hey!

Diplomat Group/Lead Russian Diplomat:

May you both be favored with the future of your choice
May you live to see a thousand reasons to rejoice

(Russian Diplomat: Zaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa)

Zachava zdarovia

Heaven bless you both nazdrovia

(Russian Diplomat: Vaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa)
To your health and may we live together in peace

HEY!

The Russian diplomats (suits and all) take to the floor like Cossacks in a Hopak dance. The squat-and-kick move is properly called prisyadka (knee-bending) and is just one part of the dance, but it's the only part known to most non-Russians. It's one of the more difficult parts of the dance, requiring good balance and substantial leg muscle strength. The dance goes pretty well until one of the dancers bumps into Ivan and draws him into the center of the ring. The two stare each other down. The dancer bows. Ivan bows in return. The dancer stomps his foot, and then offers his hand. The two stare each other down some more, and then Ivan, with little hesitation, accepts it. The two of them go into a dance routine. "I like it!" Ivan says after a few steps. Bear in mind, he's drunk and Greg's been sober this whole time.

It later becomes a fusion of Russian and Jewish dancing as both groups exist on the same dance floor. (Alternate interpretation, according to YouTube: "the Jews are holding hands doing there walking around singing bit while the Russians [are] running between them mocking them and taking the liberty of doing an advanced dance based around the simple nature of the reverse culture".)

Greg/Ivan/Drinkers:

Dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai
Dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai
Dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai
Dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai

Dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai
Dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai
Dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai

Dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai

The room starts to spin around as Ivan spins around and around, getting even more and more drunk. "Drinks for everybody! Mazeltov!" the bartender shouts. Ivan dashes to the bar and violently raises a shot glass of vodka. "To life!" he shouts. The scene freezes and then fades to the next scene.

Greg

I had to help Ivan out of the bar. Thankfully, our credit cards weren't maxed out. "Wow... you Russians sure know how to live it up, huh?" I said. Ivan laughed heartily. "Yes, comrade. Ha ha ha! You know... I like you. You have my blessing and my permission to marry my lovely Anya. L'chaim!" "All right. Thanks... Papa." I whistled for a taxi, and one pulled up within three minutes. "Take this man to the Ambassador Hotel. He's drunk and Eastern Orthodox," I instructed the driver, giving him a $10. I hailed another taxi and took myself home.

On the way home, I called Anya. "Hello?" "Hey, babe. Just wanted to let you know that I put your father in a taxi and sent him back to his hotel. He's drunk as a skunk." "Oh no..." "Are you sure you're Eastern Orthodox, because Papa just pulled a Topol in there." "With a hora?" "Yep. Dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai-dai." "Oh." "He did give us his blessing and permission." "Oh, that's wonderful!" "I'm on my way back."

Matt

With Greg gone for the moment, it gave me some time to think about a new direction for the band. We had a meeting in the East Room and invited everyone to sit in. "So, new ideas anyone? We all know Kari and T.K. wrote a new song..." Everyone cheered at that. "But are there any covers that we haven't done yet?" I asked.

Marcus raised his hand. "Yeah, I got one. Hot little number from the Four album. 'Urgent.'" "Hmm... OK, we'll try it." So, we set up.

["Urgent"

Written by Mick Jones

Performed by The Teenage Wolves

Lead Vocal: Marcus Damon (Quinton Flynn)]

Rika plays the introduction on her keyboard. Joe sits in on drums this time, while Yolei takes Greg's place with T.K. at the electric guitar. Marcus stands at the center mic. Kari clears out a spot in the East Room as she dances around gracefully (yet sensually). Three guesses as to who the subject of this song is, and the first two don't count.

Marcus:

You're not shy, you get around

You wanna fly, don't want your feet on the ground

You stay up, you won't come down

You wanna live, you wanna move to the sound

Got fire in your veins

Burnin' hot but you don't feel the pain

Your desire is insane

You can't stop until you do it again

But sometimes I wonder as I look in your eyes

Maybe you're thinking of some other guy

But I know, yes I know, how to treat you right

That's why you call me in the middle of the night

You say it's urgent

So urgent, so oh oh urgent

Just you wait and see

How urgent our love can be

It's urgent

You play tricks on my mind

You're everywhere but you're so hard to find

You're not warm or sentimental

You're so extreme, you can be so temperamental

But I'm not looking for a love that will last

I know what I need and I need it fast

Yeah, there's one thing in common that we both share

That's a need for each other anytime, anywhere

It gets so urgent

So urgent

You know it's urgent

I wanna tell you it's the same for me (Matt/T.K.: Hoo hoo)

So oh oh urgent

Just you wait and see

How urgent our love can be

It's urgent

Anya finally gets a chance to show what she can do as she plays a saxophone solo that burns up the track.

Marcus:

You say it's urgent

Make it fast, make it urgent

Do it quick, do it urgent

Gotta rush, make it urgent

Want it quick

Make it urgent, urgent, emergency

Urgent, urgent, emergency

Urgent! Urgent! Emergency

Urgent! Urgent! Emergency

So urgent! Emergency

As the band fades, the audience (or what little there is there) cheers.

Matt

After that, Davis raised his hand. "Hey, Matt! I've been thinking about it, and, uh... I want to try something." "What, Davis?" I asked. "I've been working hard on it, and I know I have what it takes." "That's the thing, what is it?" Rika pressed. "I want to do a number with your band."

That took us all by surprise. "You mean you can actually sing?" I asked. "Yeah. I've been teaching myself based on my experience with the girls. Naomi's been helping me out." "OK, why not? What's your pleasure?" "'No Boundaries', from that American Idol show." We knew it, so we set up for it.

["No Boundaries"

Written by Kara DioGuardi, Cathy Dennis, and Mitch Allan

Performed by The Teenage Wolves

Lead Vocal: Davis Motomiya (Brian Donovan)

Backing Vocals: Yamato "Matt" Ishida (Michael Reisz) and Takeru "T.K." Ishida (Michael Cunio)]

Rika plays the introduction on the keyboard as Davis tenderly approaches the mic, grabbing it on the stand with both hands. He closes his eyes.

Davis:

Ohhh hmmm...

He opens his eyes and starts the build-up in the first verse. At "But you gave me one good reason..." he looks directly to Kari, then looks back to the audience.

Davis:
Seconds, hours, so many days
You know what you want, but how long can you wait?
Every moment lasts forever
When you feel you've lost your way
And what if my chances were already gone?
I started believing that I could be wrong
But you gave me one good reason
To fight and never walk away
So here I am still holding on

Brian Donovan, who voices Davis, also voices Rock Lee on Naruto and its spinoff, Rock Lee and his Ninja Pals. One thing I should mention about Rock Lee is that he's not very good at ninjutsu, but is very talented at taijutsu (a more physical element) and is quite ambitious. Similarly, Davis goes for the same level of energy and passion as the Lambert version, but he doesn't try to strain his voice by reaching falsetto or those "mind-boggling crescendos". He has the energy and the will, just not necessarily the natural talent. T.K. and Matt go on backing vocals.

Davis/Backing:
With every step you climb another mountain
Every breath it's harder to believe
You make it through the pain
Weather the hurricanes
To get to that one thing
Just when you think the road is going nowhere
Just when you almost gave up on your dreams
They take you by the hand and show you that you can
There are no boundaries...
There are no boundaries

Misha Berson of The Seattle Times called this song "perhaps the most tuneless, hackneyed earful of 'inspirational' junk that any American Idol has been saddled with in their last chance at victory". And nobody is more fit for that earful of inspirational junk than the tuneless, hackneyed Davis Motomiya. He really gets into the performance.

Davis:
I fought to the limit, to stand on the edge
What if today is as good as it gets?
Don't know where the future's heading
But nothing's gonna bring me down
I've jumped every bridge
I've run every line
I risk being safe
I always knew why
I always knew why!
So here I am still holding on

Davis/Backing:
With every step you climb another mountain
Every breath it's harder to believe
You make it through the pain
Weather the hurricanes
To get to that one thing
When you think the road is going nowhere
Just when you almost gave up on your dreams
They take you by the hand and show you that you can

Davis stubbornly throws caution to the wind and soldiers on through the song with his usual optimism, energy and determination.

Davis:
You can go higher
You can go deeper
There are no boundaries above and beneath you
Break every rule 'cause there's nothing between you and your dreams

With every step you climb another mountain
Every breath it's harder to believe

Davis/Backing:
You make it through the pain
Weather the hurricanes
To get to that one thing
Just when you think the road is going nowhere
Just when you almost gave up everything
They take you by the hand
And show you that you can
There are no boundaries... ehh eh
(
Backing: There are no boundaries)
There are no boundaries... yeah ohh
There are no boundaries... ehh eh
(
Backing: There are no boundaries)
There are no boundaries... Yeah eh

Davis:
There are no boundaries

The band is stunned.

Matt

We were quiet for a few minutes, letting it all sink in. Rika was the first to speak. "Uh... no. No no no. It won't work, Davis." Davis turned around. "Huh? What do you mean?" "Ugh... where do I start? The song choice was a living, breathing cliché. Your vocals are adequate, and I could feel your passion and determination. You just don't have the talent." "Huh? And you do?" he shot back. "Yeah! Not only that, but I have more experience than you."

"I actually thought he was... okay," Kari slowly said. Rika facepalmed. "Figured. Little Miss Sunshine sticking up for the talentless." That sparked Kari's flame. "Now wait just a minute, I thought he was OK. Maybe even good. Maybe that little jam session of yours with Pink went to your head!" "Bitch, please. You're just jealous." Kari gasped.

T.K. grabbed Rika's shoulders and turned her around. "Look, sis, don't you ever call Kari what you just called her!" "Yeah!" Davis and Tai echoed.

Rika stared at him and flared her nostrils. "Just because she's your girlfriend? That's pathetic. I'm sure the last thing she needs is for you to save her from me." "If I remember correctly, you slapped Marcus for using that in a song. And now you're using it yourself. Isn't that a double standard?" "No."

It quickly descended into chaos as an argument exploded. Not even Kari could stop it. Just then, Greg walked in and observed the fight before shouting, "HEY!" We stopped. "Geez, what is wrong with you people? I can't even leave for two hours without you guys fighting? That is seriously messed up. Now, what started the whole thing?"

"Davis has no talent," Rika said. "And?" Davis' jaw dropped. "Dude, that's cold!" he shouted. The argument started up again, until I finally put in my earplugs, cranked up the amplifier to full blast, and played a power chord on my bass guitar. That got everyone's attention.

"I get it. I totally get it. We're all tired, we're all cramped together in the same house, and we're all anxious about the Bagra Army. Tai, I can understand you getting involved because Kari's your sister. T.K., Rika, you two are still getting adjusted to each other as brother and sister. Davis, I won't even get started with you. But the rest of you? Come on! I thought you were better than this. We've been friends for a long time, but now we're at each other's throats. Hmmph. Maybe success has spoiled us. Rotten. Maybe it is too much, too soon. Now, all the Digimon have their Burst Modes unlocked, right?"

Max raised his hand. "Actually, Yamato, Candlemon hasn't reached Ultimate yet," he said. I rethought my plan. "OK... for everyone whose Digimon has reached Mega-level, I've got an idea. We're going to find an open field and have a little battle tournament. We'll keep fighting until everyone has unlocked Burst Mode. That way, we can all be on the same page."

Izzy scratched his chin in thought. "Hmmm... a battle tournament. A chance to enhance our strength and immediate diversion to calm our troubled nerves. Sounds like fun! I'm in!" "Me too," Tai agreed. "Hey, maybe we can all join hands and sing 'Kumbaya' while we're at it," Rika sarcastically suggested. Mimi liked that idea. "Oooh, that sounds like fun!" Max snapped his fingers. "Actually, I have a better idea! I'll be right back!" He quickly left.

Half an hour later, he came back with sheet music for everyone. We looked it over. "Hmm... 'Miracles'. Written by Marty Balin. Prodigious," Izzy said. Max got out a pair of bongo drums, and we moved into position.

["Miracles"

Written by Marty Balin

Performed by The Teenage Wolves

Lead Vocal: Yamato "Matt" Ishida (Michael Reisz)

Backing Vocals: Company (Jason Spisak, Colleen Villard, Philece Sampler, Michael Lindsay, Louis Tomlinson, Michael Cunio, Lara Jill Miller, Brian Donovan, Andrew Rannells, Tiffany Christun, Derek Stephen Prince, Doug Erholtz, Melissa Fahn, Crispin Freeman, Quinton Flynn, Kate Higgins, Maxwell Caulfield, Juliet Mills)]

Rika plays the introduction on the keyboard as Marcus gets into a sort of mellow groove on the drums. Maxwell plays the bongos. Nothing brings the group together like a chance to sing backing vocals on a Teenage Wolves track. Greg opts to use an acoustic guitar, so T.K. and Kari can join the others. The other DigiDestined get close together and take this opportunity to bond.

Matt:

If only you believe like I believe, baby (Backing: If only you'd believe like I believe)
We'd get by
If only you believe in miracles, baby (
Backing: If only you'd believe in miracles)
So would I
If only you believe like I believe, baby (
Backing: If only you'd believe like I believe)
We'd get by
If only you believe in miracles, baby (
Backing: If only you'd believe in miracles)
So would I

I might have to move heaven and earth
To prove it to you, baby (

(

If we wanted to, baby

We could exist on the stars
It'd be so easy (

All we gotta do (Backing: Baby, baby, baby, oh, baby)
Is get a little faith in you (
Backing: Baby, babe)
Oh, I've been so many places
I've seen some things (
Backing: Yes, I have)
I know love is the answer (
Backing: Yes, it is)
Keeps holding this world together, yeah
Ain't nothing better
Ain't nothing better (
Backing: Nothing's better)
And all the answers to our prayers
Hell, it's the same everywheres, baby (
Backing: Just the same now)
Nothing ever breaks 'cept the heart (
Backing: Love's a game now)
Only tears give you away (
Backing: Ain't it a shame now?)

Then you're right where I found ya (Backing: Oh, baby)
With my arms around ya (

O-o-o-o-o-o-oh, baby
Baby, baby (

Few ever find in a lifetime
But from that very first look in your eyes
I knew you and I had but one heart (

Only our bodies were apart (

That was so easy (

So easy (

I had a taste of the real world (

So would I

Oh, yeah (Backing: Oh, yeah)
All right (
Backing: All right)
Baby, we're sure doin' it tonight (
Backing: Baby, we're sure doin' it)
Every time you come by, let me try (
Backing: Come on by)
Pretty please with sugar on it (
Sora: Pretty please with sugar on it)
That's how I like it, ooh
I can't even believe it with you
It's like having every dream I ever wanted come true (
Backing: Dream of a lifetime)
I picked up your vibes
You know, it opened my eyes (
Backing: I'm havin' a fine time)
But I'm still dreamin', yeah (
Mimi: Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, oh)
And you're right where I found ya (
Backing: Oh, baby)
With my arms around ya (
Backing: Oh, baby)

Oh, if only you believe like I believe, baby (Backing: If only you'd believe like I believe)
We'd get by
If only you believe in miracles, baby (
Backing: If only you'd believe in miracles)
So would I
If only you believe like I believe, baby (
Backing: If only you'd believe like I believe)
We'd get by
If only you believe in miracles, baby (
Backing: If only you'd believe in miracles)
So would I
So would I
So would I

Anya gets a saxophone solo in.

Matt:
Oh, if only you believe like I believe, baby (
Backing: If only you'd believe like I believe)
We'd get by
If only you believe in miracles, baby (
Backing: If only you'd believe in miracles)
So would I
If only you believe like I believe, baby (
Backing: If only you'd believe like I believe)
We'd get by
If only you believe in miracles, baby (
Backing: If only you'd believe in miracles)
So would I

The song ends on that note. The scene fades to black.

Author's Notes:

You may not think of it this way, but a lot of hurdles were jumped across this chapter. I know, it's getting harder for me, too.

As for T.K. and Kari's "hearts becoming one", that's going to unlock something epic. Something Sovereign-level epic. Something that hasn't happened since the original "Digimon World Tour" in Season 2.

Yes, I had "cast" Rob Paulsen as Anya's father in previous fanfics, but I changed it because Jim Cummings would be more likely to do a more complete vocal impression of Topol.

Vegas is coming after this next chapter. Then, it will be the beginning of the end.

I would consider writing a fanfic based on the DATS division in Japan (with Tai, Joe, Mikey, Gary, Davis, Kristy, etc.; basically the other DigiDestined), but there's really not much I can do with Shoutmon. Besides, what has been written about the Zero Two kids that hasn't already been written?

I probably have not said this enough, but if you like what you read, then please review the chapter. If you have questions, then write a review. I'll answer them for you.
