Recap
[Kari] I was pulled into the Dark Ocean and kept in a cold cell with Gatomon. I met Dragomon, the master those Divermon had warned me about two years ago. He was charming but ultimately cruel, and he even threw me into the wall. I decided enough was enough, and I knocked out the warden with my song. Meanwhile, T.K. was on his way to rescue me. When he did, I was so excited and relieved, but Gatomon reminded me of my song. So, I toughened up. It was a good thing I did, because we ended up facing Daemon. He'd been improving himself as well, and even my Hikari Wave attacks couldn't hurt him. But finally, my heart connected with T.K.'s and we were able to work with our Digimon to defeat him and open the gate back to the real world. Viva Las Vegas!
Chapter 56: The Battle of Fremont Street
Thomas
The battle was drawing nigh at hand, so I had to find something to keep my mind off it. I looked for a piano bar at the hotel, hoping my adult appearance would fool the management into allowing me to play. Truly, my appearance makes me appear to be at least five years older than I actually am.
I found one such bar at Rouge. The décor was sleek chrome and red Ferrari leather throughout. The lowest priced drink was $8. Suited me fine. Realizing the inevitable would eventually become inevitable, I allowed Gaomon to come out of his Digivice. He looked around at his surroundings and smelled the air. "Sir, I would say this is a fashionable, high-class bar. What are we doing here?" "First off, you should know that I am a high-class person. Second, my suite doesn't have a piano in it, so I'm calming my nerves by performing here." "Excellent strategy. Sir, will you be requiring my assistance?" "Well, it depends. You've listened to my Project collection enough." "I know I have. In that case, I think 'Silence and I' would be a good selection." "All right then. I'll even give you the vocals." "Thank you."
["Silence and I"
Written by Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson
Performed by Gaomon (Skip Stellrecht)]
After a quick warm-up on the piano, Thomas starts playing the song. Gaomon listens carefully to the introduction for the precise pitch and key.
Gaomon:
If I cried out loud
Over sorrows I've known
And the secrets I've heard
It would ease my mind
Someone sharing the load
But I won't breathe a word
We're two of a kind
Silence and I
We need a chance to talk things over
Two of a kind
Silence and I
We'll find a way to work it out
While the children laughed
I was always afraid
Of the smile of the clown
So I close my eyes
Till I can't see the light
And I hide from the sound
We're two of a kind
Silence and I
We need a chance to talk things over
Two of a kind
Silence and I
We'll find a way to work it out
At this point, Thomas plays the intricate and complex instrumental part on the piano. Gaomon carefully looks at the wall for a clock, but finds none. "Um, sir..." he says. Sweat starts to come out of Thomas' pores. "Not now, Gaomon, I'm concentrating," he quickly answers. "Sir, I don't think we have time for the complete middle orchestral section." Thomas stops abruptly. "Oh yes. You're right." He picks up to the part after that.
Gaomon:
I can hear the cry
Of a leaf on a tree
As it falls to the ground
I can hear the call
Of an echoing voice
And there's no one around
We're two of a kind
Silence and I
We need a chance to talk things over
Two of a kind
Silence and I
We'll find a way to work it out
As Thomas concludes the song, Gaomon clears his throat and points out two large African-American gentlemen in suits.
Thomas
"I believe the proper term is, 'busted', sir," Gaomon deadpanned. I turned to the two gentlemen and asked, "Gentlemen. How can I help you?"
"We need to see your ID," the first man said in a high voice. I reluctantly allowed him to borrow my wallet. He looked at my ID. "Once you look at my picture, you will inevitably realize who I am. Thomas H. Norstein; keyboardist, co-producer, and arranger for The Teenage Wolves. We were in the news recently. I only came to this piano bar to use your piano, as my suite does not have one. I don't desire to participate in any underage drinking. This is Gaomon, one of our best engineers," I explained. Gaomon bowed. "I have perfect pitch because I'm a dog-type Digimon," he said.
The first man rubbed his chin in thought, then discussed the matter with the gentleman accompanying him. They called someone on a cell phone, presumably management. Then, the first man turned back to me and returned my wallet. "Well, we've discussed the matter, and we're willing to let you stay if you play something to liven the crowd. We've discovered that the better the music, the more likely the customers are to drink." "What exactly are you suggesting?" I asked. The second man said, with a much deeper and intimidating voice, "Lay down the boogie and play that funky music 'til you die!" I merely nodded. "Agreed."
Gaomon and I took a few moments to discuss our strategy. The crowd on this particular night was predominantly a mixture of Caucasian and African-American, with ages ranging from 21 to 45. During my time at the Stockholm Royal University of Science, Motown-style soul was the popular musical sub-genre of choice in the college clubs. As much as it had betrayed my classical piano training and personal musical tastes, I knew my way around the Gordy family's catalog and had played in a few clubs on select Saturday nights to finance my boxing Pay-Per-View habits. Gaomon was quite familiar with the work of the particular Detroit Wheels song I intended to satiate the crowd with.
["Devil with a Blue Dress On/Good Golly Miss Molly"
Written by Frederick Long, William Stevenson, John Marascalco, and Robert "Bumps" Blackwell
Performed by Thomas H. Norstein (Crispin Freeman), Gaomon (Skip Stellrecht) and the MGM Grand Piano Bar Singers (Kala Balch, Randy Crenshaw, Ron Dante, Jeff Gunn, Vangie Gunn, Windy Wagner, LaShawn Daniels, Siedah Garrett, Linda Harmon, Christa Larson)]
At the insistence of the management, Thomas starts playing "Devil With a Blue Dress On" on the piano. "All right. I'm playing it, so you better sing along! OK?" he calls to the crowd. The crowd obliges and starts clapping along. "Heyyyyyyyyyy, HEY! All right! Jump up, get it! Hey!" Thomas vocalizes. The singers get up and start dancing. The entire scene is reminiscent of one from an Elvis Presley movie.
Singers/Gaomon:
Devil with the blue dress, blue dress, blue dress
Devil with the blue dress on
(Thomas: Oooooh yeah)
Devil with the blue dress, blue dress, blue dress
Devil with the blue dress on
Thomas:
Fee, fee, fi, fi, fo-fo, fum
Look at Molly now, here she comes
Wearin' her wig hat and shades to match
Got her high-heel shoes and an alligator hat
Wearin' her pearls and her diamond rings
Got bracelets on her fingers now and everything
The crowd seems to be enjoying it as liquor sales are going up. You better believe some people are recording this on their phones.
Thomas/Gaomon/Singers:
Devil with the blue dress, blue dress on
She's the Devil with the blue dress on
(Thomas: have mercy!)
Devil with the blue dress, blue dress, blue dress
Devil with the blue dress on
Thomas:
Hey! Wearin' her perfume, Chanel No. 5
Got to be the finest girl alive
She walks real cool, catches everybody's eye
They got to be nervous, they can't say hi
Not too skinny, she's not too fat
She's a real humdinger and I like 'em like that
Thomas/Gaomon/Singers:
The devil with the blue dress, blue dress on
She's the Devil with the blue dress on
(Thomas: Hey, I say, now)
Devil with the blue dress, blue dress, blue dress
Yeah, the Devil with the blue dress on
After a short piano solo, we transition into the other part of the song. Thomas, the semi-classical pianist, throws himself into this song. Gaomon and the singers dance around.
Thomas:
Good golly, Miss Molly!
(Gaomon/Singers: Good golly, Miss Molly)
You sure like to ball
(Gaomon/Singers: Good golly, Miss Molly)
Good golly, Miss Molly
(Gaomon/Singers: Good golly, Miss Molly)
You sure like to ball
(Gaomon/Singers: Good golly, Miss Molly)
But when you're rockin' and a-rollin'
(Gaomon/Singers: Good golly, Miss Molly)
Don't you hear your mama call?
(Gaomon/Singers: Good golly, Miss Molly)
Thomas/Gaomon/Singers:
From the early, early mornin' 'til the early, early night
You can see Miss Molly rockin' at the House of Blue Lights
Thomas:
Good golly, Miss Molly
(Gaomon/Singers: Good golly, Miss Molly)
You sure like to ball
(Gaomon/Singers: Good golly, Miss Molly)
But when you're rockin' and a-rollin'
(Gaomon/Singers: Good golly, Miss Molly)
Can't you hear your mama call?
(Gaomon/Singers: Good golly, Miss Molly)
The Rouge crowd continues to rock, with the people unaware of the dangers that await them at Fremont Street.
Thomas:
Fee, fee, fi, fi, fo-fo, fum
I said, "Look at her once again, now here she comes"
Wearin' her wig hat and shades to match
Got her high-heel sneakers and an alligator hat
Wearin' her pearls and her diamond rings
Got bracelets on her fingers now and everything
Thomas/Gaomon/Singers:
Devil with the blue dress, blue dress on
She's the Devil with the blue dress on
(Thomas: Sock it to me, y'all!)
Devil with the blue dress, blue dress, blue dress
Devil with the blue dress on
Devil with the blue dress, blue dress, blue dress
Devil with the blue dress on
Devil with the blue dress, blue dress, blue dress
Devil with the blue dress on
The song is interrupted by police officers and security guards, who come in and evacuate the bar. As they exit, each patron leaves a large bill (mostly $20s and $50s, with a few $100s) in a fishbowl by the piano. As soon as they leave, Thomas goes to the fishbowl and starts counting the money nonchalantly.
Thomas
"How much did we make, sir?" Gaomon asked. I finished counting. "$990 American," I reported as I deposited the money in the fishbowl. Just then, my earpiece went off in my pocket. I pulled it out and answered it. "Hello?"
It was Greg. "Thomas! Where are you right now?" "Hello, Greg. I'm at the Rouge piano bar, I just had to calm my nerves." "Well, you chose a fine time. Fremont Street is under attack, and Ken and I are on our way there." "Roger."
I hung up and gave the fishbowl to Gaomon. "Gaomon, give this money to the management. They'll need it for repair costs once this fight is over." "Sir, yes, sir." He gave it to the bartender. "Thank you so much," he said. The bartender looked at all the money and quickly answered, "I should be thanking you." Then, we left for the parking lot.
Outside, it was sheer panic. People were running everywhere, and I soon saw why. A legion of Troopmon were marching down Las Vegas Boulevard South. I grimaced, and Gaomon surveyed the scene. "It looks like we have a situation, sir. If I may suggest it, I have a plan. You Digivolve me to Gaogamon, and I'll attack the Troopmon, thus clearing the area and allowing us to proceed to the others much quicker." I snapped my fingers, igniting the DigiSoul in my hand. "My thoughts precisely," I said with a grin.
Gaomon found a clear spot and stood at the ready while I unclipped my Digivice from my belt. "Gaomon! Stand by for Digivolution to Champion-level!" I instructed. "Sir, yes, sir!" "DigiSoul... charge!"
"Gaomon Digivolve to... Gaogamon! Rawr!"
I reclipped my Digivice and mounted my partner. "To Fremont Street!" I declared. "Sir, yes, sir!" We rode off, with Gaogamon batting away the Troopmon with the claws his scarf formed. The traffic was terrible.
Greg
Ken and I finally arrived at The Fremont Street Experience. Sure enough, there was trouble. An army of Troopmon were fighting off civilians, while one figure in particular caused havoc. It was our old enemy, Tactimon. We got off our partners, who quickly went back to their Rookie forms. Tactimon noticed us, then in a flash, was closer to us. "So, we meet again," he said. We glared at him. "So, this is it. The final showdown. Where's Lord Bagra, your boss?" I demanded to know. He sheathed his sword and answered, "I regret to inform you that I have killed him." We gasped at that. "You killed your own boss? That's insane!" Veemon exclaimed. "I guess loyalty doesn't go very far in your ranks," Ken added.
Tactimon looked down. "I am loyal to our cause, nothing more." I clenched my fist. "Well, that doesn't matter. We're going to take you down!" I said.
I turned to my partner. "Veemon! Time to take it to the limit!" "One more time!" my partner added. We fistbumped, and that ignited the DigiSoul in my body. Ken ignited his DigiSoul as well. "Wormmon, into battle!" he called. Wormmon crawled into position. The two of us unclipped our Digivices and got in position. Slamming our hands on the sensor and turning the whole device on its side, we shouted, "DigiSoul, Charge! OVERDRIVE!"
"Veemon Double Warp Digivolve to... UlforceVeedramon!"
"Wormmon Double Warp Digivolve to... GranKuwagamon!"
They quickly ran into a problem with the canopy. "Geez, there's not much space here without wreckin' something," he grumbled. I looked the situation over. "This place already looks like a war zone. Go ahead and tear out the canopy!" I said.
Ken's eyes widened. "Are you crazy? That's charged with electricity!" It was too late, because UlforceVeedramon got shocked. "I had no idea. I'm sorry, buddy," I quickly apologized. UlforceVeedramon quickly drew out his sword from his "That's OK. I'll have to handle this more delicately." He drew out the saber on his bracelet and started working on cutting a hole through.
In the meantime, the Troopmon kept advancing. Ken and I looked to each other, and without saying a word, we both thought the same thing. We unclipped our Digivices and entered in the three-button combo. "DigiSoul Aura Mode, On!" After going into Aura Mode, we reattached our devices to our belts and went to work.
I grabbed an invisible football and started running down the line, tackling Troopmon left and right. I turned around and did it again. That running I did on the elliptical was paying off more than my Aura Mode was. When I returned, Ken was throwing Troopmon everywhere. "Greg! Do you want to learn some judo?" he asked. I covered my fist with my palm and humbly bowed. "Yes, sensei."
"All right. Pay attention. The first thing you do is make sure your attacker has his chin down, his back straight, and is leaning forward. Like this." He grabbed a Troopmon and demonstrated. "Now, you transfer your weight, and get it off the leg this guy's going to attack." Ken moved his weight. Unfortunately, another Troopmon arrived and started attacking him, forcing Ken to think fast and knock both of them out. "We'll have to continue this later," he sighed.
Soon, everyone except T.K. and Kari arrived. GranKuwagamon cut some space out using his Dimension Scissors, all without getting shocked. Rika looked up at the scene. "Well, that's convenient." Matt looked to Tactimon. "You! Tactimon! Why do we keep meeting you and not your boss?" he shouted. Tactimon didn't pay him any attention and stabbed the ground once, generating an earthquake.
"Matt, Tactimon killed his boss," I told him. "He did? Then who's leading the army?" I just shrugged.
"Rika, we need to act quickly," Renamon said, bringing the group into focus. Rika nodded. "Right! Here we go!" She, Anya, and Matt took out their Digivices, while Marcus ran right through the fight. He jumped from broken pavement piece to broken pavement piece like a ninja. He summoned Agumon, then punched Tactimon right in the face. That ignited his DigiSoul. He raised his fist and shouted something that I'm pretty sure sounded like "It's fightin' time!" In the meantime, the other three slammed their hands on their Digivices' sensors. "DigiSoul, Charge! OVERDRIVE!"
"Gabumon Double Warp Digivolve to... AncientGarurumon!"
"Renamon Double Warp Digivolve to... Sakuyamon!"
"Lalamon Double Warp Digivolve to... Rosemon!"
Agumon Double Warp Digivolved to ShineGreymon. AncientGarurumon froze the rest of the light system, making it completely harmless. We went back to fighting off Troopmon until Thomas rode up on Gaogamon. By the time he arrived, Marcus was back with the rest of us. "What took you, Nerdstein?" he asked. "Traffic," Thomas quickly answered as he got off. He then snapped his fingers, igniting his DigiSoul all over him as Gaogamon found a clear spot to Digivolve in. Then, Thomas called, "DigiSoul, Charge! OVERDRIVE!"
"Gaogamon Warp Digivolve to... MirageGaogamon!"
It was six against one, but Tactimon was tough. If he wasn't generating a massive vortex that took out a sign from an ABC store, he was creating a mountain range that sprang out from the California Hotel and Casino. Sakuyamon used most of her energy to put a shield around a group of illegal immigrants and blackjack dealers Rika and I herded together. Finally, the Troopmon were all eliminated, but we still had to deal with Tactimon. All of us went out of Aura Mode and prepared for Burst Mode.
"Fools! How can you just head into battle without any chance of winning?" Tactimon asked us. We just painted on our best smiles. "What? You don't have a chance," Thomas cheerfully answered. Anya joined in. "Let me tell you something about the human heart and spirit. It gives us the opportunity to rise above the odds, even when nothing is in our favor. We're the Digimon Data Squad. There isn't anything we can't overcome. Get in our way, and you'll find out." "So you see, Tactimon, you never had a chance. And you never will, because nobody, and I mean nobody, breaks the Data Squad," I added. "Human potential is something that never stops flowing from our bodies and minds, as long as we never give up!" Matt stated. "Childish nonsense!" the general scoffed. We pulled out our Digivices, entered in the three-button combo, and showed him a thing or two. All of us charged it at the same time, so it was almost as if there was a split screen. "CHARGE! DigiSoul...BURST MODE!"
"AncientGarurumon, Burst Mode! Arooooooooooo!"
"ShineGreymon, Burst Mode!"
"MirageGaogamon, Burst Mode!"
"Sakuyamon, Burst Mode!"
"Rosemon, Burst Mode!"
"UlforceVeedramon, Burst Mode!"
"GranKuwagamon, Burst Mode!"
The Digimon rode out into battle. Tactimon countered by jumping from ledge to ledge and building to building, slashing away with his sword. "Amethyst Wind!" Sakuyamon unleashed a storm of purifying cherry blossoms, which Tactimon just slashed through. GranKuwagamon tried to cut his way through, but the sword ended up trimming his nails. Ken was shocked. "Tactimon just gave him a manicure!"
Rosemon blew a laser kiss at him, but he dodged it. "That Digimon is inhuman!" Anya gasped. "Torrid Weiß!" ShineGreymon shouted as he repeatedly fired scorching hot flame-bullets at Tactimon. One of them hit, dropping him to the ground. Marcus jumped up and pumped his fist. "OH YEAH! That's how it's done!" he cheered loudly. We all congratulated him, then we herded that group of immigrants and dealers away from the area before the debris started falling. AncientGarurumon put out the flames with his Absolute Zero attack, then got out of the way so MirageGaogamon could swing his Meteor Shackle at Tactimon. Of course, that was only a distraction. Thomas' partner had another idea up his sleeve. "Luna Hook Slasher!" He carved Tactimon to pieces with his crescent moon-shaped energy blade. Tactimon became a DigiEgg, and then disappeared.
Thomas looked absolutely stunned, then smiled. "Whoa. MirageGaogamon's got game," I said in awe. Marcus slapped him on the back. "Way to go, Thomas!" Thomas just accepted it. The rest of us celebrated, but our celebration was short-lived.
The ground started shaking, and diamond-like spikes came up everywhere. One even caused a fire hydrant to explode. Soon, a giant walking crystal stood before us. Matt got in a defensive stance. "Blastmon!" he shouted. "Heh heh heh. So if it isn't the puny little DigiDestined. Or what is it you call yourselves now? The Data Squad? Eh, cute name. Anyway, I'm here to tell you all that I've already taken down a number of places on this 'Strip' of yours, and I'm here to finish you off. ….Well, I would, but I've been thinkin'." Matt got out of his stance. "Huh? You've been thinking? About what?" "Well, when Tactimon killed Lord Bagra, I was pretty shocked. I mean, who wouldn't be after seeing one of your buddies just kill your master like dat? I even considered killing Dragomon myself, but-"
"Hold up. Dragomon?" Rika interrupted. Blastmon went on, "Yeah. He runs this little place called The Dark Ocean. Heh, I think we held the Child of Light up dere once or twice. But now, Daemon should be takin' care of 'er. Heh heh." Ken glared at him and growled.
Blastmon went on, "Hey, easy, boy. What I'm sayin' is, I'm tired of being where I'm not wanted. So, here's what I'm gonna do. I'll fire one attack at you guys, and then I'm going back to the Digital World to retire on Infinity Mountain. You know, start fresh." "Why attack us at all?" I asked. "Because I'm a bad guy, and that's what bad guys do. Now get ready. This is gonna be a big one! Diamond Machine Gun!" He fired off the crystals throughout his body like a machine gun, alongside an intense punch, and swept through all our Digimon in one shot. They all reverted to Rookie form and dropped like bricks to the ground. A shock went through each of our systems as we rushed to our Digimon's sides. While we did that, he became a DigiEgg and disappeared. When he said he was going to start fresh, he apparently meant it.
I held Veemon's head in my arms. "Veemon, speak to me," I pleaded. He just looked up to me. "Boy, that Blastmon sure packs a wallop, doesn't he?" "Uh huh." I hugged him. "I'm OK, Greg. I'm OK. But what about you?" "I don't know."
Matt
I helped Gabumon back on his feet. He looked bruised. "Are you OK?" I asked. He coughed. "Never better."
Rika
Renamon tried to pick herself up, but fell back into my arms. "Renamon..." "Rika. My intuition says that Blastmon used the last of his energy to attack us, but he didn't completely weaken us. You know a woman's intuition is never wrong." I smiled. "You're right. But, what do we do now?"
Marcus
"Come on, Agumon, talk to me," I said. He couldn't be out of juice this fast. "I don't know what's gonna happen next, Boss. Blastmon's attack caught me off guard." "Well, you just get back on it. I know you can."
Thomas
I helped Gaomon back on his feet. "Sir, don't you find it odd that Blastmon's final attack didn't kill us completely?" "I do. I think he was counting on his new master to finish the job, which he will."
Anya
Lalamon coughed out some smoke. "Lalamon, are you all right?" I asked in concern. "Of course I am. But what about you? Do you think we can stand up to Dragomon, Anya?" "I certainly hope so."
Ken
I picked Wormmon up and held him in my arms. "Wormmon..." "Don't worry about me, Ken. I'll be just fine." I hugged him.
T.K.
We finally made it back to the Real World, and it looked terrible. Kari gasped. "Oh T.K... It's much worse than we thought," she moaned. I didn't see any Mega-levels, only Rookies. Marcus looked up and saw us. "It's about time," he snarled. "It's nice to see you too, Marcus," I answered.
We got off our Digimon, who quickly reverted back to their Rookie forms. Patamon flew up and landed on top of my hat. "Wow, it looks like you all took a beating," he said. Marcus got Agumon up on his feet. "Oh yeah, yeah. Sure, state the obvious. What took you guys so long?"
"We would've been here a lot sooner, but we had to kill Daemon first," Kari answered with a smile. That made Ken smile as he ran to Kari, excited at the news. "You did it! That's great news!" Then, he stopped and added somberly, "But still... Tactimon and Blastmon took a lot out of the Digimon. They're gone, but we don't know if we can fight again."
Spirits were down. It looked like it was up to me to bring them back up. "Of course you can, guys. We've never given up before, have we?" They shook their heads. I went on, "Right. And we're not going to start now! We've all got shortcomings to face and problems we wish we didn't have, but you can't just lie down and give in to all of your troubles! Look at Ken, he didn't give up when he learned Oikawa was using him!" "T.K., I really wish you didn't remind me of that," Ken said sharply. "Oh. I'm sorry, Ken. Anyway, like I was saying, you just have to believe in yourself."
The others tried igniting their DigiSoul, but for some strange reason, it was all used up. "Huh? It's not working!" Thomas exclaimed. "Aw man, this sucks! How are we supposed to fight without any DigiSoul?" Rika wondered. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn't make it work.
Kari and I paced the sidewalk and thought long and hard about it. Suddenly, Kari stopped. "Wait a minute. T.K., why are we overthinking this? We could use our Crests to help." "Gee, I don't know. It seems too easy." "Think about it. We haven't been needed this badly since we were kids. We're their last hope." I thought about it. As much as I hate Deux Ex Machina, there was no denying we had used it many times in the past. Why should now be any different? I turned to my girlfriend and decided, "OK, I'm in!"
We rallied the troops. "All right, everyone! Focus on every positive trait you've ever had. I want you to believe like there's no tomorrow!" I called. "And what will you be doing?" Anya asked. "Watch this!"
I looked to Kari, and she nodded. Then, I took her hand, intertwining her fingers with mine. Once again, I could feel the energy mixing, growing, becoming more impossible by the second to deny. Our hearts were becoming connected, and that gave us power. The two of us really focused our combined power as our Crests' insignias were stenciled in on our free hands. "When two hearts join together in the spirit of hope, nothing is impossible," I began. "When our bonds come together, our hearts and power become one, creating the legend! The miracle of light!" Kari finished. We tightened our grip, then drew back our free hands. "KIBOU!" I shouted. "HIKARI!" Kari yelled. Then, we thrust our hands forward and shouted, "RECHARGE!"
Our combined power shot out of our hands like nuclear missiles, as they went into the air and exploded around our friends. Suddenly, everyone was getting powered up, including us. DigiSoul was going everywhere as human and Digimon alike glowed in the light. "This power, it's absolutely remarkable!" Thomas exclaimed. "I'm getting blown away, all over again!" Matt added. "I'm getting such a natural high right now, I think I'm in orbit!" Rika went on. "WHOO-HOO-HOO-HOO!" Marcus shouted. Greg let out a rebel yell. "YEEEEEEEEEEE-HAWWWWWWWWWW!" Anya joined in with him. Ken stared at his DigiSoul-covered arm and let out a smile of determination. "This is it. This is our time." He took out his Digivice and posed with it. "Who's ready to save the world?" "We are!" we shouted together. "Then let's do this!" Kari decided.
The lights got brighter and brighter until all the colors melded into one white light that completely took over the area.
[BGM: "The Touch" by Stan Bush]
The Double Warp Digivolution sequence for each Digimon starts up, with each Digimon going directly from Rookie to Mega Burst Mode. The order is this: Gabumon, Patamon, Gatomon, Wormmon, Renamon, Veemon, Agumon, Gaomon, and Lalamon. No "insert name Double Warp Digivolve to..." announcements. Just straight up Stan Bush goodness from the 80s. After the Digivolution sequences end, we see each member of the Neo Data Squad/DigiDestined look on to the battle ahead. They're eager, they're hopeful, they're ready to fight to the death. The camera zooms out, revealing Dragomon's gigantic shadow looming over Las Vegas. Then, we cut to black.
Author's Notes:
The inclusion of "Devil With the Blue Dress On/Good Golly Miss Molly" was merely to lighten the mood before we got into the heavy stuff.
This is one of the final chapters, folks. Coming up, the last battle with Dragomon. We all know who will win, but now it's just a matter of getting there. As always, I want to thank you for taking the ride with me. I appreciate your feedback and eagerly look forward to it.

["Marvin Gaye"
Written by Marcus Damon and Rika Nonaka [Charlie Puth and Julie Frost]
Performed by Marcus Damon (Quinton Flynn) and Rika Ishida (Melissa Fahn)
Backing Vocals by Agumon (Brian Beacock)]
On the night before the big concert, Rika and Marcus are together in Rika's suite. They're bouncing ideas off each other for new songs. Rika taps her pencil on the desk before coming up with an idea. "I've got it! Marcus, you and I could write the next American bedroom anthem!" "You mean a makeout song?" Marcus asks. "No, no. Much more than that." "Ohhhhhhhhhh. I like that. Well then, why don't you start?" Rika nods obligingly, then counts herself in using her pencil.
As she sings, Marcus nods his head along and then gets blown away as Rika once again does a striptease involving her buckles and her belt.
Rika:
Let's Marvin Gaye and get it on
You got the healing that I want
Just like they say it in the song
Until the dawn, let's Marvin Gaye and get it on
We got this king size to ourselves
Don't have to share with no one else
Don't keep your secrets to yourself
It's karma sutra show and tell
Woah
There's loving in your eyes
That pulls me closer
(Agumon: Oh it pulls me closer)
It's so subtle
(Agumon: It's so subtle)
I'm in trouble
(Agumon: I'm in trouble)
But I'd love to be in trouble with you
Marcus is liking what he's seeing as he quickly tears off his vest and tank top, throwing his shoes to the wall as well. He finds that his jeans zipper is stuck, so he forces it off, breaking it. He throws the jeans into his closet. Agumon helpfully starts dimming the lights by any means necessary.
Marcus/Rika:
Let's Marvin Gaye and get it on
Rika:
You got the healing that I want
Just like they say it in the song
Until the dawn,
Marcus/Rika:
Let's Marvin Gaye and get it on
You got to give it up to me
I'm screaming "Mercy, mercy please"
Just like they say it in the song
Until the dawn, let's Marvin Gaye and get it on
Marcus:
And when you leave me all alone
I'm like a stray without a home
I'm like a dog without a bone
I just want you for my own
I got to have you babe
Agumon is enjoying watching this as Rika pulls off her shirt and undoes her pineapple-shaped ponytail.
Marcus/Rika:
Woah
There's loving in your eyes
That pulls me closer
(Agumon: Oh it pulls me closer)
It's so subtle
(Agumon: It's so subtle)
I'm in trouble
(Agumon: I'm in trouble)
But I'd rather be in trouble with you
Marcus:
Let's Marvin Gaye and get it on
Ooh babe, I got that healing that you want, yeah
Rika:
And like they say it in the songs,
Until the dawn, let's Marvin Gaye and get it on
Soon, the two are "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" each other. From the side of the bed, Agumon watches Rika's jeans fall to the ground.
Marcus/Rika:
Let's Marvin Gaye and get it on
You got the healing that I want
Just like they say it in the song
Until the dawn, let's Marvin Gaye and get it on, babe
You got to give it up to me
I'm screaming "mercy, mercy please"
Just like they say it in the song
Until the dawn, let's Marvin Gaye and get it on
Just like they say it in the song
Until the dawn, let's Marvin Gaye and get it on
Ooooh
As the song ends, the two are completely covered up in the sheets as Marcus turns off the lamp.
