Recap
[Gaomon] Master Thomas felt the need to calm his nerves, so we visited a piano bar. After we were discovered by the management, we were seemingly coerced into "laying down the boogie", which Thomas did masterfully with a medley of "Devil with the Blue Dress On" and "Good Golly Miss Molly". We donated the proceeds back to the resort, then proceeded to join the others on Fremont Street. Gregory and Ken discovered that Tactimon had assassinated Lord Bagra, so UlforceVeedramon and GranKuwagamon began to gave him a proper punishment for treason. The others, including us, quickly arrived to finish the job. At that point, Blastmon entered the scene to give us one final blow before bowing out permanently. That blow was large enough to revert us to severly injured Rookie forms. At the point where seemingly all hope was lost, who should arrive but Takeru and Hikari? They gave us a rousing pep talk and recharged everyone's DigiSoul, propelling us all from Rookie to Mega Burst Mode. Victory will be ours!
Chapter 57: Guiding Light
High above the clouds of Las Vegas, two powerful Digimon watch on. They are the Vermilion Bird of the South, Zhuqiaomon, and the Azure Dragon of the East, Azulongmon. Through an opening unseen to the others, they observe our heroes. "Hmmph, so these are the humans you speak of. The main two you were concerned with, they are quite powerful. Other than that, however... none of them are particularly special," Zhuqiaomon observes. Azulongmon continues his viewing. "Zhuqiaomon, you must understand. The Crests of Hope and Light are the most powerful in existence. These two children have mastered them, and they apparently find good in these others." Zhuqiaomon spots Ken. "AHA! That's him! That's the little worm that imprisoned me! Oh, I shall have my vengeance now!" He starts to fly in, but Azulongmon stops him. "Control yourself! Ken has reformed." "And how do you know their names?" "I have been watching them all for some time now."
"You don't say. Ah, but what does it matter? All humans are bloodthirsty and selfish." "I disagree. Why don't we have a wager? We'll observe these humans. If they prove themselves worthy, then we will help them." Zhuqiaomon's red feathers glow brighter. "Otherwise, I myself will burn this entire city!" he threatens.
Kari
The good news was that T.K. and I had recharged everyone's DigiSoul and brought all the Digimon up to Burst Mode. Now we just had to find Dragomon and take him down. "All right, so everybody's at Burst Mode. Now what?" Greg asked. "We've got to find Dragomon and kill him," I answered.
Thomas walked the floor and thought out loud. "Hmm... now let's see. Blastmon said he had just come from the Strip. If I were Dragomon, and I knew what Blastmon was up to, I would want to finish the job." Marcus snapped his fingers. "That's it! He's probably at the Strip." Thomas just nodded, realizing Marcus had probably stolen his thunder.
We quickly discussed the best way to get there. Most of the guys could ride on their partners' shoulders, and Rosemon offered to carry Anya in her arms. Since Ophanimon had a javelin, she couldn't do that. Just then, Sakuyamon used her staff to create a bubble around us humans. I looked around. "Wow... thank you, Sakuyamon," I said. She gave us a thumbs up and we all moved forward.
Our bubble went up into the air as we combed the city for Dragomon. The beautiful landscape we saw of neon and glimmer was now completely trashed. It was just like every other place we had visited. That's why we had to set things right by finishing Dragomon off once and for all.
T.K. and I looked out over the scenery. "Looks pretty bleak, doesn't it?" I asked. "Yeah. Are you scared, Kari?" "...Not as much as I used to be. I've found that the fear never completely goes away. You just have to let it motivate you." He chuckled. "You're starting to sound like Tai." "Ha ha, yeah. I guess I do."
Greg
We finally spotted this Dragomon at the New York New York Hotel and Casino. He was a huge, ugly-looking creature that looked like a metallic squid demon. Soon, we had the fake New York City skyline surrounded. He violently jerked his head around, looking at everyone. "So, you have this place surrounded, eh? Little good it will do you!" "The game's up, Dragomon! T.K. and I took care of Daemon!" Kari called to the demon. "So you did. I warn you, I will not be as easy to defeat!" With that, he created a storm in the sky. While we looked around, a giant trident our bubble.
We ended up flat on the pavement, but for some reason, we weren't hurt. I looked around. "Is anyone hurt?" I asked. Matt got up. "I'm good." I helped everyone up, and we watched the battle. UlforceVeedramon, who tied with MirageGaogamon in terms of speed, got a cut in with his sword. But, he was quickly deflected. So, he started wrestling with Dragomon. He went in for a shoot kick, but Dragomon grabbed his leg and reversed it. MirageGaogamon tried slicing off some tentacles, but was shot down as well. Just then, Matt thought of something. "Wait just a minute, guys. What if there are people still inside the hotel?" Without taking another second to think about it, we rushed inside the front lobby.
Marcus
Rika pulled down the fire alarm T-bar and set off the alarm. T.K. found the intercom. "Attention, everyone! This is an emergency! Everyone leave now!" Within a minute, the front lobby was flooded with people. We did a good job clearing them out, until one woman realized something. "Stop! My baby!" she cried. Outside, it was like a war zone. Some of the impact shook the hotel, and the ceiling was starting to fall apart.
I ran in and looked for her little kid. I checked every hall and went as far back as I could until I faintly heard something like, "Mama, Mama, wait for me." It was a little girl running down the hall. She was wearing an oversized purple gown that touched her feet, and carried a little stuffed rabbit with her. She stopped in her tracks when she saw me. She screamed, and I picked her up in my arms. "I know I'm not your mama, kid, but I'll get you to her. Come on!" We ran down the hall, dodging the falling pieces of ceiling. We had to stop once to pick up her stuffed bunny, and I had a close call. We were only halfway through, and I didn't know if we were gonna make it or not.
The two Sovereigns look on at this act of bravery. Zhuqiaomon gasps. "This is remarkable. That mere human is risking his own life to save that little one. And he has so far to go!" "Ah, that is Marcus Damon. Loud and arrogant, and often rude and confrontational. Yet, he has a special soft spot for children. This is only natural to him," Azulongmon notes. Zhuqiaomon sees his point and nods his head. "Very well. You have proved your point. We shall give them our power." They both glow, as several colored balls fly down to each of our heroes. Oddly enough, they all appear to be doing heroic, selfless things. Thomas and Greg are performing CPR on a pair of civilians. Kari, Anya, and Rika are clearing the area. T.K. and Matt defend a group of kids from a pair of Troopmon. It just so happens that the balls appear in front of them after the deed is done.
Matt
Once the two Troopmon were finished off, I saw a blue and silver ball right in front of my face. I tapped T.K. on the shoulder. "Yeah, this looks very familiar," he said. It reminded me so much of when we were at summer camp. T.K. and I instinctively grabbed the balls. Just then, I heard a voice inside my mind. "Matt, this is Azulongmon. You and your friends have proved yourselves worthy to use our power." I looked for Azulongmon up in the sky, but I couldn't see anything through the clouds. "Don't bother looking for me. Now, bond with the DigiCore, and allow its power to work within you." "Uh, how do I do that?" I wondered. "Allow your heart to absorb the ball." "Got it." I looked to T.K., and he nodded. After posing with the ball and lifting it in the air, I brought it down and held it against my chest. I felt the ball going inside my body. Once it was completely in, five seconds went by and nothing happened.
Then, it hit. Muscles all over my body shook or tensed up by themselves. Muscles in places I didn't know I had them tensed up. My pulse and breathing changed. My vision became blurry for a split second, and I almost lost my balance. This wasn't like the upgrade I'd gotten in Japan, or even when AncientGarurumon reached Burst Mode for the first time. No, this was different. This drew on every positive emotion I'd ever experienced, with the strongest being friendship. Not just between Gabumon and me, but between people I'd come to add to my family. My body burned a gem-like flame. Somewhere between the soul and soft machine is where I found myself again. I was going to a completely new level, and it felt amazing.
The digital energy in the DigiCore mixed with my DigiSoul to push me into a new dimension of Aura Mode. I didn't even need my Digivice, I was just thrust there. I gained a pulsing, flame-like silver-blue aura, and my focus became direct. I grinned with absolute confidence.
Marcus
I moved the kid to my back and she got a tight hold on my neck. I pushed the ball inside my heart, and I felt a new passion. It was like a thousand fires were being ignited inside my soul, or when the air jets come on in the hot tub. Except, you know, multiplied by like a million or something. The sensations my body was feeling were even better than sex. I quickly moved the girl back into my arms and started running. Pretty soon, I was zooming through the halls. I mean, I was flying! In no time at all, I was out of there and the girl was reunited with her mom.
Rika
The DigiCore Azulongmon talked about was incredible. After all that tension building up, I had a sensation that I'd made it to the top of the hill and I was coasting down the other side. I realized that this entire experience isn't really about fighting, it's about having the strength to do what needs to be done to save the world! I took the power and went with it. I'd reached more than Aura Mode, I'd reached Hyper Aura Mode! I let out a roar and zoomed up to the sky, looking for Dragomon. Sure enough, I found him attacking Sakuyamon. I flew in and shouted to him, "Hey ugly! Get a load of this! Dragon Wheel!" I did a genie windmill breakdancing move a few times, with my hands crossed over my chest. Then, I curled up into a ball and spun, letting the flames in my soul erupt into a fiery inferno. Then, at the speed of sound, I slammed into Dragomon, coming out on the other side with what was left of his beaded necklace. "Oh yeah!" I cheered.
The Digimon kept fighting. Rosemon whipped Dragomon a few times, but he didn't become her slave. ShineGreymon's Final Shining Burst decimated the roller coaster and most of the skyline, so Dragomon moved to a castle. I pulled out my DATS earpiece and put it in, sending a message to the others. "Rika here. Dragomon's moving to a castle. I'm on my way there."
AncientGarurumon put the entire outside on ice so Dragomon couldn't get a good foothold on it. For some reason, he wrapped around a spire with his tentacles. GranKuwagamon hacked and slashed, but Dragomon's tentacles grew right back. Greg flew in, and he was ready to go. "Rika! Have you come to watch me take this guy down?" he asked me. I snickered. "Eh, no." "Whatever." Greg charged up to Dragomon and attacked him with a vicious combo attack comprised of punches and kicks, which he extended into a multitude of punches before finishing it with a roundhouse kick that knocked Dragomon to the ground, inflicting a high amount of damage. "Oh ho yes, that felt good," he said. A few seconds later, one of our enemy's tentacles knocked him to the ground.
At that point, Dragomon really started putting up a fight. The storm kept brewing, and his trident went everywhere. It cut through Sakuyamon's purifying cherry blossoms and went right past UlforceVeedramon's sword like it was nothing. Seraphimon's lightning bolts weren't fast enough.
T.K.
We moved across the street to the Excalibur, but thanks to this new and improved Aura Mode, that was easy to do. We even cleared out the hotel faster than we could've otherwise. The police and National Guard arrived to secure the area. After we thanked them, the rest of us joined Rika, Greg, and the Digimon. Things were starting to get ugly, though. Any time the Digimon advanced, Dragomon slammed into them with his tentacles. They kept getting up, though, and that's what mattered. ShineGreymon flew in and tried to stab Dragomon in the heart with his fiery sword. No dice.
I flew over to Seraphimon's side, and he was panting heavily. I asked him, "How are you doing, Seraphimon?" "Not... too good. Still hopeful... but not too good." "Do you need any help?" "I'll manage... but thank you, T.K." "All right. I believe in you. Keep doing what you can." I patted him on the left shoulder, then flew away.
Kari really seemed to be into it. "Hikari Wave Barrage!" She blasted a few of her Hikari Waves at Dragomon, who seemed to take the hit. But then, Dragomon wrapped one of his long tentacles around her and threw her back into the sky. "AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" "Kari!" I yelled. She flew back half as quickly as she was thrown.
Thomas tried showing off his boxing technique, but was thrown to the ground. Dragomon mocked him by counting to ten, but Thomas kicked out and got up in time. The battle was growing more and more intense by the minute until it all came to a breaking point. Dragomon let out an evil laugh and then used his tentacles to grab all of us humans and slam us over and over into the ground. ShineGreymon tried to slash through a tentacle, but he couldn't. Luckily for me, I could still feel all my joints, but it still hurt. Plus, I was forced out of Aura Mode.
Pretty soon, there wasn't a hotel on the entire Strip that didn't have a Digimon slammed into it. I struggled to get up, nursing my arm. "How's everyone doing?" I asked. Ken's face had a twinge of pain on it as he crawled up to his feet. "How did... ergh... how did, Dragomon get so strong?" he wondered.
It looked like everyone had been forced out of Aura Mode. Marcus stood up and tried to get a creak out of his back. "I don't care how, but we've got to stop him!" he shouted. Kari tried moving her ankle, but couldn't. "I can't move my ankle!" "Great, another injured," Rika grumbled.
Thomas stumbled his way to her side and moved her ankle in various places. It didn't take him long to find out what was wrong. "She's torn a ligament." "Now what do we do?" Anya asked hopelessly.
Matt grabbed his forehead, trying to think. "Wait just a minute. Let me think here. Rrrgh... there's got to be something." I helped Thomas nurse Kari's ankle while I racked my brain.
For some time, we watched helplessly as military drones came in. They tried shooting and firing bombs at Dragomon, but our enemy batted them all away. The Excalibur was completely decimated thanks to a miniaturized nuclear bomb. News cameras were everywhere, reporting what happened as it happened.
That gave me an idea. "Guys! Look around you! See all those cameras?" I asked. They looked around, and I went on. "We're being seen from coast to coast and around the world. That means billions of people are watching us." "So?" Marcus said. "So, they're counting on us to save the world. I know it's a lot of pressure, but it has to be done. If we give up now, we'll let down all these people and condemn every one of them to death. Do you want to see our world wiped out?" "NO!" Marcus shouted. "Exactly! Me neither. That's why we can't give up. Kari, you remember that analogy about darkness?"
Kari nodded her head. "The brighter the light is, the deeper the darkness," she said. I continued, "Yeah. But when you think about it, the deeper the darkness is, the brighter the light should be. We've got to stay positive. Think about our families and friends. They're counting on us. The entire world is counting on us. If we believe we can, we will."
Greg clenched his fist. "Takeru's right, we can't give up now. If we did, we'd also let our partners down. They're working so hard for us, so we owe it to them to stay positive." Thomas nodded. "I have a feeling no one is going to get out of this battle without at least a few mental scars. I can live with a few sleepless nights." "Amen to that," Ken said.
Marcus grinned. "You know, Bucket Head, you've definitely got yourself a point there. Human emotion makes Digimon stronger, and Digimon give human beings hope that anything is possible!" "Yeah!" Matt cheered. Everyone else agreed to that.
I got back up on my feet, and helped Kari get on hers. "OK, then. Everyone up on your feet! It's time we showed this Dragomon why we're called the DigiDestined!" I took out my Digivice and posed with it. I looked to both sides, and the others followed. So far, so good. I filled my heart with hope and said a silent prayer. Then, I punched in the three-digit combination for Aura Mode. If my hunch was right, this upgrade we got from Azulongmon should still be there. The Signal Port lit up, and I swung my Digivice and other arm like I was using a Tensouder. Then, I brought both hands in front of me as my free hand covered the Signal Port.
Within seconds, I was in the upgraded Aura Mode. I put away my Digivice and looked at all my friends. They'd come around and were all smiling. They looked eager, determined, and hopeful. "Matt, why don't you lead us into battle?" I asked. Matt and I fistbumped as we switched places. "Sure thing, little bro. Let's do this!"
With that, we took off into the sky until we reached Dragomon. He licked his hideous lips. "So, you're gluttons for punishment?" Matt gave his answer. "Nope, but you will be! Data Squad! It's fightin' time!" We moved out into position and started attacking.
Matt started by jumping above Dragomon. He then fell on him with his foot, then delivered one punch at the opponent, jumped backwards, then sprang forward with another kick. Finally, he finished with one major claw across Dragomon's body, causing major damage. He flew back up.
"Watch me now! Hey!" Rika called. Then, she charged a sphere on both hands and charged towards Dragomon, attacking with multiple punches and kicks, then ended the attack with a left hook kick that knocks him in the air. While he was still up there, Thomas swung his arms so fast they appeared to be windmills on his shoulder. He pummeled Dragomon uncountable times.
UlforceVeedramon
I definitely knew I'd be feeling some of these attacks in the morning, but I got a good look at Greg and the other humans attacking Dragomon. Greg dashed across Dragomon with a punch to his face. Then, he flew back and elbowed the opponent in the face. Finally, Greg punched the enemy Digimon down into the ground, inflicting a high amount of damage. He looked so brave and determined.
"Hey guys! Don't you think we should help them?" I asked everyone. They agreed, and we all got up and joined them. At this rate, we could either heal in our Digivices when it was over, or we could become DigiEggs again. We really had nothing to lose.
Sakuyamon went first. "Thunder Kick!" She dropped down like lightning from the sky and attacked with a kick. "Dragon Impulse X!" I shouted at the top of my lungs, as I covered myself in the aura of a dragon and slashed through the enemy. "Jewel of Heart!" Rosemon fired exploding Tiferets at Dragomon.
Marcus went next. "Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!" He punched Dragomon in the stomach, then whirled him around to the ground with the punch still on the stomach. He finished by throwing Dragomon away. "How do you like us now?" Marcus asked.
Anya followed that by spinning around and using her fingers to form a heart, in which the empty space inside began to glow pink. She looked to Dragomon and chanted, "Nastya veshchi, protivnyye veshchi , uletet' ! [Nasty things, nasty things, fly away!] Love Sunshine!" Then, a pink energy blast shaped like a heart spread to hit Dragomon.
Ken flew high into the air, and as he descended back down to the ground at a high speed, he broke a number of Dragomon's tentacles with his knee, causing an extreme amount of damage. Everyone got a hit in. T.K. followed that up by flipping backwards and firing an energy wave at Dragomon, paralyzing him.
Kari
T.K. looked to me. "There you go, Kari. He's all yours," he said. "Huh?" "I'm letting you have the last blow. You get to finish him off." I was confused about the whole thing. I looked to the others. "Go on, Kari. You deserve it," Thomas said encouragingly. Marcus gave me a thumbs up. "Go for it!" Everyone wanted me to do it.
When I thought about it, they were right. I did deserve this. If I was going to finally conquer my fears and prove I was strong, this was my chance to do it. "Oh boy..." I murmured. I gulped and then got my game face on. I channeled all the light and all the courage that I had in my heart. This was my time to shine.
I flew towards Dragomon, confident and unafraid. "You do realize that if you finish me off, I'll only return as a DigiEgg. I'll start over in the Digital World," Dragomon threatened. "Normally, that would frighten me," I started. I drew my hands back, and gathered the Crest of Light's power with all my heart, all my soul, and all my mind. The others just looked in awe at what I was doing. "But now, Dragomon... I'm not afraid of you. Ophanimon, set me up!" I called.
Ophanimon agreed. "You got it! Call Dramon!" She summoned a dragon to unleash fire on Dragomon, lowering his defense. I was able to absorb the energy from the fire and convert it into something I could use. "Do you want to know why I'm not afraid of you?" I asked him with a smug grin. He didn't answer, so I thrust my palms forward and calmly answered for him, "Because I am the worst enemy of darkness." I discharged a massive golden beam of energy towards Dragomon, and it hit him dead center.
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
I completely obliterated Dragomon. There was nothing left of him. I smiled. "It was about time he saw the light," I quietly said to myself. I looked around, and everyone was cheering. Soldiers, civilians, reporters, my friends, everyone. "Thank you all!" I said. Then, I lowered myself to the ground. Aura Mode automatically shut off and I immediately recharged by falling asleep in T.K.'s arms.
T.K.
I felt like a king carrying Kari in my arms. "Is the airport undamaged?" I asked a reporter. "As far as I know, yes," she answered. "All right. Thank you." I carried her back to the hotel, hoping against all hope that our suites weren't damaged.
We arrived and I put Kari in bed. Then, I met up with the others. We glanced at each other, and we all thought the same thing. We'd just saved the world again. We didn't need to say anything to each other. We just smiled and went to bed.

Lead Vocal: Kari Kamiya (Lara Jill Miller)]
A few weeks later. We get an overhead shot of Japan at night, focusing in on the Tokyo Dome in Bunkyō. The stadium is at full capacity for the homecoming concert of The Teenage Wolves. We focus in the dead center of the stadium, on a raised stage. Rika plays the introduction to the song on the keyboard as Kari stands with a mic in her hand. The spotlight appears on her.
Kari:
The winner takes all,
It's the thrill of one more kill,
The last one to fall, will never sacrifice their will!
Suddenly, the stage lights up as bright lights go off everywhere and the band fully kicks in. The mood is completely jubilant. Kari operates the stage masterfully. We even find Yolei and Ken playing the keytar and rhythm guitar (respectively).
Kari:
Don't ever look back, on the world closing in,
be on the attack with your wings on the wind.
Oh, the games will begin.
And its sweet sweet sweet victory, yeah!
And it's ours for the taking, it's ours for the fight.
And it's sweet sweet sweet victory, yeah!
And the one who's last to fall.
The winner takes all.
You don't win no silver,
Ooh, you only lose the gold,
You push with a fever for your time keeps tolling on,
The original DigiDestined, Commander Sampson, Dr. Damon, Gary, the Hunters, the other members of the "Fusion team" (Mikey, Angie, etc.), and basically anyone who works at DATS (including characters from the video games) are in the best seats in the house as they wave their Digivices in the air like lighters. We get more shots of the band performing.
Kari:
Against all the odds, against all your pain,
Your back's on the wall with no one to blame,
Wild hearts won't be tamed.
And it's sweet sweet sweet victory, oh!
It's ours for the taking, it's ours for the fight.
And it's sweet sweet sweet victory,
And the one who's last to fall.
The winner takes all...
Kari points to T.K. "Take it!" she shouts. T.K. plays a mean solo on his electric guitar. We get shots of the White House, then inside, where the Obama family, the Caulfields, and Joan Collins are watching this. Sasha, Malia, and Max sway their Digivices back and forth.
Kari:
And the one who's last to fall.
Marcus plays a killer drum solo. We get more shots of the band performing.
Kari:
Sweet sweet sweet victory, yeah!
It's ours for the taking, it's ours for the fight.
And it's sweet sweet sweet victory, yeah!
And the one who's last to fall.
The winner takes all!
The audience goes wild as the song ends. Kari kisses T.K. right there on stage. The others try to cover for her until the other couples decide to embrace. Thomas shakes his head at the whole thing. We cut to black.
Author's Notes:
Yes, Hyper Aura Mode is a ripoff of Super Saiyan 2. There were a number of attacks used by our heroes that were originally used on DBZ. See how many of them you can name.
We'll just try to pick up some of the loose ends next chapter.
