Recap

[Kari] With Tactimon and Blastmon out of the way, we had to find Dragomon quickly. Marcus figured out he was at the Strip, with a little help from Thomas. Sakuyamon created a bubble for us to float in and we confronted Dragomon at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino. He didn't like that, so he popped our bubble. We decided to go inside and clear everyone out. Apparently, Azulongmon was so touched at our heroics that he gave us DigiCore to implant in our hearts, giving us the power to go into Hyper Aura Mode. The battle moved to the Excalibur, where we started to get the upper hand. That didn't last long, because we eventually all got slammed into the Strip. However, the newscameras seemed to inspire T.K., who inspired us with a speech. That was enough for us to put all our skin into the game. I even got to finish off Dragomon! So now everything should be back to normal. I hope.

Chapter 58: In the End

T.K.

A few days after our homecoming concert, we were invited to fly back to Washington, D.C. for some medals. It wasn't just the band, it was all the original DigiDestined. We had a huge gathering in the Rose Garden. Everyone was there.

President Obama started with his usual speech. "My fellow Americans. Today, we are here to honor a group of distinguished young people. These individuals have shown more courage and strength than many of our finest soldiers. They saw a threat and they conquered it beautifully. It was not easy, but then again, neither is life. I am proud to be associated with these young people. And so, we are here to decorate them. First, I'd like to present each of these 'DigiDestined', as they have come to be known, with the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, two of the highest civilian awards of the United States." Everyone cheered for that. Obama went on, "In addition... in addition, I signed an executive order that allowed the United States Military to assist these brave young men and women. So, I would like to present the following with the Medal of Honor and the Purple Heart. Yamato Ishida. Takeru Ishida. Rika Ishida. Hikari Kamiya. Marcus Damon. Thomas H. Norstein. Gregory T. Logan. Anya Rădulescu. And Kenneth Ichijouji." A number of generals and officials decorated us with medals. We looked to each other and grinned. This was far better than any award for our music. We knew that our Digimon, and any Digimon, would be accepted into society. Our Digimon got medals as well.

The next day, we flew back to DATS Headquarters in Japan with one question in mind. I asked it. "So, Commander, what's next?" "Hmm? What's next, you ask. Well, now that Digimon are being accepted in the human world, the next thing to do is reclaim the Digital World." "Huh?" we asked. "You mean, we're actually going into the Digital World?" Greg added. Commander Sampson nodded, and Kudamon went on, "Michael Kudo and the others have laid the groundwork, but now that all of you have reached Burst Mode and Hyper Aura Mode, it should be much faster." Marcus punched his fist in his palm. "Why speed it up? I'm going to savor every minute. Right, Agumon?" "Right, Boss!" Marcus' Agumon answered.

Greg

The next day, we were ready to go. The people at DATS created this giant Stargate ("The correct term is 'Einstein–Rosen bridge portal device'," Izzy said.) and set it up to take all of us to the Digital World. After all the chevrons engaged, the group started to run through. "You ready for this, Veemon?" I asked. "Oh yeah! Next stop, the Digital World!" he cheered. Fist bumps went all around as we ran through.

When we came out, I couldn't believe my eyes. For a place that was in turmoil, the Digital World looked pretty darn good. We saw a lot of interesting and awesome things, like bouncing plants, little orange Digimon with horns, a flock of flying dragon Digimon, and a digital river. Thomas inspected some of the dirt, even tasting some of it. "Chemical structure of the terrain seems to be sound," he said.

We also met up with a few members we hadn't seen too much of. Mikey was OK, but I couldn't stand Tagiru. Davis couldn't stand much of him, either. Sure enough, Gary and Marcus' sister Kristy stayed close to each other. I could sense that it was love.

Commander Sampson stood before us all. "All right, everyone. Here is the main mission. The Bagra Army hired some mercenaries to keep watch of their territory while they were conquering the Human World. Their base is 200 kilometers away, out in the distance. All we have to do is clear the base and then destroy it. Things should be much easier from there. Is everyone ready?" "SIR YES SIR!" we all shouted at the same time. "Very good. Then, Digivices out! Ignite to maximum level!" We did as we were told. "Now, Digivolve!"

We all shouted in unison, "DigiSoul, Charge! OVERDRIVE!" After our Digimon Double Warp Digivolved, we activated Aura Mode and moved out.

T.K.

Just as Matt thought, we all became famous and respected. Everywhere we went, we were treated as heroes. We got a huge number of advance sales of our third album, and our second did really well, too.

In September, all of us flew to Moscow for Greg and Anya's wedding. Russia was beautiful. We went through an entire traditional Russian wedding. Greg paid a lot of money, but ended up getting Anya's older sister instead. Then, he paid even more money and gave the family both of our albums. He finally got Anya. At the ceremony, both of them were crowned and then did this strange "dance". The priest, holding the Blessing Cross and the clasped hands of the groom and bride, and followed by the best man (in this case, me) who held their crowns above their heads, and the bridesmaids (in this case, Yolei, Mimi, Kari, and Rika) holding the lit white candles, walked three counterclockwise turns around the table in a celebratory "dance".

After the traditional ceremony, we went to the department of public services, formally known as ZAGS. Greg and Anya were asked to throw two crystal glasses. Using their DigiSoul, they smashed those glasses into thousands of tiny shards. Then, they released two white doves into the air to symbolize their love and partnership. Greg's Veemon and Lalamon didn't get married, but they fell for each other. We then toured Moscow for several hours, taking pictures everywhere. A week later, they had a reception in Odaiba.

A few weeks after we killed MaloMyotismon, I wrote some predictions about our lives 25 years in the future. Stuff about Tai becoming a diplomat and Matt going into space. Those were completely off, and I was wrong to write them. There's no way I can possibly predict the future, especially when I've learned that it could be so unpredictable. So, whatever you've seen of my predictions, just forget them. I'm not going to write any more, I'll just tell you what's happening now.

Sampson took Mr. Caulfield under his wing and trained him up enough to make him leader of an American DATS branch. Sasha and Malia became two of the charter members and helped recruit other kids and adults who had their own Digimon.

Matt and Sora are now officially steady. The two of them and Tai are now in their second year of high school. Tai's the captain of the soccer club and trains hard nearly every day, but now he's starting to think more about what he'll do when he graduates. At least, that's what Kari tells me. Mimi and Izzy are in a long-distance relationship, with her in New York and him in Odaiba. They meet up in the Digital World every so often. Joe's working on medical school, but things aren't going the way he wants to. I really hope they do.

Marcus and Rika are still seeing each other and are writing music together. They're planning on releasing an LP soon. Thomas was still single, so Rika and I looked around for a match. I think we found one. She's this Gothic Lolita named Nanami, and she's very much a genius like Thomas is.

Oh, Rika wanted me to tell you this. During our tour, she, Kari, and Anya had been using something called a NuvaRing for birth control. They don't offer those in Japan. However, Merck (the company that makes them) offered the girls free birth control shipped overnight if they acted as "brand ambassadors" in Japan. Needless to say, they took it.

The Hunters reformed a long time ago and had joined Tai and the others. They're still doing well, and even asked the members of PurityxSpirited out to the school dance.

As for my family, my mom, dad, and stepmom have become great friends and we see each other often. I moved in with Matt and Rika in Rika's mansion shortly after we came home from getting our medals.

Davis is trying to do two things at once: become a soccer star and develop his own ramen chain. Yolei and Ken are still seeing each other. Cody took some tests and actually moved up into Kari's and my grade.

Greg's brother Gary and Marcus' sister Kristy grew out of the crush they had on each other, but are still great friends. They're like Kari and I were at that age.

Anya wasted no time getting pregnant, and she and Greg will be expecting their first child in November 2015. Greg found a job working with my dad as a reporter.

As for Kari and me, we're both in our second year of middle school and we've both become quite popular with the opposite sex. The girls seem to follow me around at school, and Kari's a hit with the guys in Tai's soccer club. Make no mistake, while we're not the power couple, we are a couple. Kari also developed a liking of ice cream for some strange reason. It's not like she's started gaining a lot of weight or anything, it's just that she likes ice cream.

Matt talked a lot about leaving the band, but he never did. All he did was catch up on his schoolwork, and then the entire Ishida family took a vacation down to South Africa. I invited Kari and Tai to come with us. We had a great time.

We never officially broke up the band, and the third album is currently out in stores. Matt's working on a solo album in his spare time, but we're going to wait a few years until we all graduate from school to go anywhere further with it.

The Digimon are still with us, although we're still working with DATS on reserve in case anything happens. It's going to take a long time before Digimon are completely accepted into human society. All in all, we're trying not to let what happened to us go to our heads.

This whole experience of going around the world and fighting Digimon and performing has been great for me. It's taught me a lot about myself. When I was a kid, I thought I was the most pathetic DigiDestined there ever was. Sure, I'd helped Matt get Gabumon Double Warp Digivolve to MetalGarurumon, but I was the last to get my Digimon to Digivolve to Ultimate. I thought my Crest was useless. But after this, there's no doubt in my mind that the Crest of Hope is just as important (if not more important) than any other Crest. After all, every action we take is driven by hope. Nobody knows that better than me.

Before our vacation to South Africa, the label wanted us to release another single. So, we flew down to Universal Studios Florida and did what they wanted us to do.

["Great Big Storm"

Written by Marcus Damon, Takeru "T.K." Ishida, and Kari Kamiya (Jeff Bhasker, Emile Haynie, and Nate Ruess)

Performed by The Teenage Wolves

Lead Vocals: Yamato "Matt" Ishida (Michael Reisz)

Bridge Shouted by Marcus Damon (Quinton Flynn)]

In this music video concept, guests to Universal Studios Florida line up on a tiered observation platform under a corrugated metal roof, overlooking a simulated outdoor scene featuring a view of a rural drive-in theater and a diner at dusk as dark clouds roll overhead. However, a movie isn't playing. Matt Ishida walks out in front of the screen. He bows, then reaches his hand up to the sky.

Matt:

Because we're

Suddenly, the band appears behind him as they start playing. Matt lowers his hand to hold onto the mic on his stand.

Matt/Band:

Holding our own in a great big storm
It's a great big storm and we're holding our own

Holding our own in a great big storm
It's a great big storm and we're holding our own

As Matt and the band perform, it becomes quickly apparent that something is about to happen. We see (but don't hear) sirens go off. The winds in the room become stronger. A small light can be seen inside a house in the distance, as well as scenes of a family getting into their storm cellar.

Matt:

I've been lost in this maze
Losing love, losing friends, losing faith in chemicals
Afraid one day you'll find me
Asleep above the stars

I watch my mother cry
Father Time is catching up
I keep the phone by my side
Afraid she'll wake me up to catch the next flight
In time to say goodbye

But sometimes I fall asleep at night
To the TV light and it sings
Oh ooo whoa oh
"One day the sun will break into the room"

A simulated tornado drops from the sky, and rain begins to fall as the band continues to perform. Guests are squirted with water from above. It's bigger than usual for more dramatic effect.

Matt:

Because we're holding our own in a great big storm
And though we're cutting it close
We won't let go
Oh no, I can't believe
Everything falling down around me
But now we're holding our own
And we won't let go

Matt/Band:

Holding our own in a great big storm
It's a great big storm and we're holding our own

Holding our own in a great big storm
It's a great big storm and we're holding our own

Seemingly, the ride becomes extended as we flash back to an earlier time, when a family (much like Matt and T.K.'s) separates. The mother and father bicker while the two young sons (one age seven and one age four) watch helplessly. When the parents tell the children the news of their divorce, they demand that they decide which parent they will live with, and berate them for their hesitation. The children have an epiphany that neither parent truly loves them. Ignoring their parents' shouts, the two sons race to a swimming pool and dive in.

Matt: (VO)

Broken hearts, broken homes and broken bones
Secret love, let me go
You know I gotta find my own way
Through mistakes that I can't change

Because there's beauty in every sin
Every single black eye
Has some blue like the moon just before the sun shines
No, I don't believe in all the things that they preach

But sometimes I fall asleep at night
And I just know you're smiling at me
Oh ooo whoa oh
One day, I'm gonna make this up to you

Ooooooh

The video and "great big storm" resume. We get more shots of the band playing their music in the storm, seemingly not distracted. When, after a few moments, the children do not reemerge, their father jumps in to seemingly rescue them, but discovers that they have disappeared. He and their mother shout their sons' names in despair.

Matt:

Because we're holding our own in a great big storm
And though we're cutting it close
We won't let go
Oh no I can't believe
Everything falling down around me
But now we're holding our own
And we won't let go

Matt/Band:

Holding our own in a great big storm
It's a great big storm and we're holding our own

Holding our own in a great big storm
It's a great big storm and we're holding our own

The scene transitions to Marcus and Rika in bed, right in the middle of the storm. Scenes of the two passionately making love are switched out with Marcus alone, confronting the camera and his demons, right there in the rain, wind and other elements.

Marcus: (spoken, or rather shouted)

And I can't STAND myself
And all the curse words that fall from my mouth
I can't STAND myself
Or my legs as they run from the ones here to help
But I just woke up with you next to me
Some new air to breathe
And a belief that it's all gonna be allllllllll right
And I can't STAND myself (WHOO)
But it's high time that we gave it a try
And I think I'm gonna finally give myself a new try

We move back to the band set up and the tornado. The tornado wrecks the drive-in screen, the diner, and a car, which causes a fireball to erupt. The roof of the observation platform also threatens to tear off. A cow, lifted by the wind, flies past the spectators.

Matt:

Because I'm holding my own, yeah, in this great big storm
And though I'm cutting it close
Oh we won't let go
Oh no I can't believe
Everything falling down around me
But now we're holding our own
And we won't let go
No we won't let go
No we won't let go, oh no

As the "storm" dies, the floor of the standing area lurches with a sudden drop, giving guests a final scare. When they finally come to, the band is gone. Participants are then directed to exit through the "Aftermath" gift shop. We fade to black.

Matt

So that's pretty much it. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Much like T.K., I learned a lot about myself. And you know, it was nice being the leader for a while. I gotta hand it to Tai, he really knows how to lead. It was much harder than it looked, especially when my ego was in the way. All in all, I'm glad I had this experience. And it still isn't over. With Gabumon and my family by my side, anything is possible. Everybody may talk about Tai and me, but I like to think T.K. and Kari left a definite mark on the world. I just have to live with that.

One of the things I struggle with is an ending. I don't like endings. I always like to think that my story is still continuing.

FIN

["Wake Me Up"

Written by Tim Bergling, Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III, Mike Einziger, Aileen Marie Quinn, and Melinda Marie Marantz

Performed by Young Takeru "T.K." Ishida (Wendee Lee)]

This is the "official" hand off for Digimon Adventure tri. We start at a darkened stage. In the darkness, the 02/World Tour T.K. plays a guitar intro while a spotlight shines on his younger self, holding a microphone at center stage. Patamon rests on top of his hat.

Young T.K.:

Feeling my way through the darkness
Guided by a beating heart
I can't tell where the journey will end
But I know where to start

They tell me I'm too young to understand
They say I'm caught up in a dream
Well, life will pass me by if I don't open up my eyes
Well, that's fine by me

So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn't know I was lost

So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn't know I was lost

Suddenly, a video screen turns on behind him as the Adventure DigiDestined (Kari, Ryo and a younger Ken included) make their way on stage with their Digimon and start dancing. The video screen shows all the coolest footage from the Adventure series and "Our War Game". The action cools down as Young T.K. comes back to the center with his mic. Footage transitions to Zero Two and those "movies".

Young T.K.:

I tried carrying the weight of the world
But I only have two hands
Hope I get the chance to travel the world
But I don't have any plans

Wish that I could stay forever this young
Not afraid to close my eyes
Life's a game made for everyone
And love is the prize

So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didn't know I was lost

So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
All this time I was finding myself
And I, I didn't know I was lost

As Young T.K. starts to wrap up this chorus, the Zero Two kids and World Tour members come up on stage as they prepare to break it down.

Young T.K.:

I didn't know I was lost
I didn't know I was lost
I didn't know I was lost
I didn't know (didn't know, didn't know)

As the instrumental part comes up again, we get previews of Digimon Adventure tri., including shots of the cast members as they are now. Spotlights fly by everywhere as the dancing continues. By the time the song is over, we see the original Adventure DigiDestined in their current school uniforms.

The DigiDestined's Story Continues in:

Digimon Adventure tri.: Saikai

Author's Notes:

Well, this is it. I don't know what the future holds for Greg and Anya, but hopefully it's good. I'll send him out to various FF writers looking for original characters.

I hope you enjoyed reading this fanfic as much as I've enjoyed writing it. I'd love to read your reviews.
