Dean woke the next morning feeling strange. It took him a minute to work out what the feeling was. He was peaceful, happy even. He had his family all under one roof and they had no cases to deal with or end of the world shit to sort out. He had the chance to just have a moment of a normal life. It was a feeling he had never really felt before, not even when he was with Lisa. He quickly put that thought out of his mind and instead pulled himself out of bed to go have a shower.
Once he was dressed Dean made his way to the kitchen to grab some breakfast. As he was looking through the shelves he realised that they were short on a lot of stuff. Looked like he would need to go on a supply run today. Not that worried him. He liked grocery shopping, now they had a kitchen he could actually cook in. smiling he grabbed Sam some cereal and made his way to his room.
Gabriel and Castiel had gone to Sam's room as soon as Gabriel had felt the younger Winchester wake.
"How you feeling Sammy-o?" Gabriel asked smiling at him.
"What? Okay?" Sam replied still somewhat sleep muddled.
"Good cos I was thinking that we should try something new today." Gabriel said sitting down on the side of Sam's bed as Castiel sat in the chair smiling at Sam.
"Try what?" Sam asked wearily. It wasn't that he didn't trust Gabriel, it was just he had a strange look in his eye.
"Well I was thinking that I could do your healing now, then you could see if you could get up? I'm sure you're bored out of your brain stuck in this room." Gabriel replied sincerely. He really wanted Sam to get better and he thought that he might well be up to it by now.
Before Sam could answer Dean spoke from the doorway.
"And what if he's not ready for that?" he asked accusingly. At that Sam bristled. When would his brother stop being so damn over protective of him?
"Well that's where Cassie comes in." Gabriel replied turning to look at Dean who frown confused by this sentence causing Gabriel to roll his eyes. "He's an angel Dean. If Sammy-o gets tired then he can help him back to his bed."
"Oh. Okay." Dean said to the surprise of both Gabriel and Sam. Dean saw there looks of shock and just shrugged his shoulders, he wasn't going to admit that he had taken Sam's words to heart last night or the things he had come to realise when he was cooking yesterday. "What? I said okay." He said defensively as they both continued to stare at him.
"Right." Sam finally spoke though his voice carried a bit of disbelief at Dean response. What had happened to his brother over night?
"I will be happy to assist you in any way Sam." Castiel spoke up from the chair smiling proudly that Gabriel thought he was a big enough angel to help taking care of Gabriel's charges. It made him feel all warm inside that Gabriel trusted and depended on him to help.
"That's good buddy, I know you'll do great. But perhaps Sam should eat first?" Dean said making his way into the room and giving Sam his bowl of cereal.
Gabriel watched Dean and smirked, though he did refrain from making any comments on Dean's behaviour. He had just got his agreement he really didn't want to get into a fight with him now. Later maybe, but not now.
Sam took the bowl with a roll of his eyes. But said nothing as he ate in silence. No one in the room speaking until he had finished.
"Okay let's do this then." Gabriel said once Sam had cleaned the bowl and Dean had removed it from his hands. He put his hand forwards and pushed his grace into healing Sam.
Once Gabriel pulled his hand away he turned to Sam and asked "So how you feeling?"
"Good, better than I have in ages actually." Sam replied.
"Okay let's try standing then shall we?" Gabriel said with a smile, though he didn't move from the bed. Sam wasn't the only one who was a bit shaky on their feet right now. He had used all the grace he had been able to recharge on Sam today. He just hoped it was worthwhile.
Sam slowly got out of his bed with Dean hovering next to him, ready to catch him if he should fall. It felt slightly strange to suddenly be standing after so long lying down but it didn't hurt. With a smile he took a step away from the bed and when he didn't collapse in a heap on the floor his smile got even wider, looking at Dean he saw a reciprocal smile on his face.
"Okay Cas. Let's get him to library." Dean said decisively.
"Of course Dean." Castiel replied jumping off the chair and running round to take Sam's hand.
As Castiel lead Sam out of the room Dean turned to Gabriel who still hadn't moved. This caused him to frown.
"You alright Gabe?" he asked somewhat uncomfortably. He and Gabriel still weren't on the best of terms after all.
"I'm fine Dean-o just need a little rest." Gabriel replied, still not moving from the bed.
"You need help to your room?" Dean offered cautiously.
"Thanks but no thanks Dean-o. I'll be good to go in a minute, no need to mother little old me." Gabriel replied with a smirk.
"I'm not mothering you." Dean grumbled in response crossing his arms as he glared at the archangel.
"Whatever you say. Go check on Sam." Gabriel replied, he really didn't want Dean watching as he made his way to his and Castiel's room. He didn't think it would be the most graceful journey, and Dean Winchester was not someone he ever wanted to show a weakness to.
At that Dean just humph and then left to go find Cas and Sam in the library.
Once Dean had left Gabriel let out a sigh and slowly pulled himself onto his feet, gently making his way to the end of the bed and then throwing himself against the wall. Using the support he slowly slid himself to his room, ever thankful that it really wasn't that far. Finally he managed to slide himself through the door and threw himself across the room to collapse on the bed. To tired out to even think of getting comfortable he fell asleep the way he landed, on his front with his arms flung out to the side.
Dean found Sam and Cas in the library sitting at the table with, unsurprisingly, books all around them.
"So how you feeling?" He asked his brother sitting down next to him.
"Good actually, really good." Sam replied smiling, finally he felt like he was on the mend.
"Awesome." Dean replied looking round the room. He was thinking about the supply run he had realised he needed to go on, but he didn't want to leave Sam now he was up and about. Though he did have Cas with him. With that thought he turned his eyes to the little angel who was deep in a hefty book written in a language that Dean didn't understand. Looking at the contradictory picture he presented he had to smile.
With that he made his decision. "Hey look we're low on supplies so I was going to go on a run. You'll be okay right?" He said turning to his brother.
"He will be fine Dean. I will look after him." Castiel replied looking up from his book smiling at the righteous man.
"Okay. What anything? Rabbit food?" he asked Sam as he stood going to ask Kevin the same thing. The only response he got from Sam was a bitchface. With a smile he left the room.
