So this chapter kind of happens during "Dog Dean Afternoon" and then following that. I hope you like it.
Disclaimer: I don't own Supernatural.
Gabriel was still sitting at the table, though he was contemplating making Kevin some lunch, when the phone Dean had given him started to ring. Grabbing it he answered.
"Hello Sammy boy. What can I do for you today?" He asked in a cheery voice.
"Hi Gabe. Um, do you know of any way for us to speak to a dog?" came Sam's answer down the phone making Gabriel's eyebrows raise.
"No, but we could probably look it up. Why?" He asked curious as to what was going on.
"Our only witness is a dog so..." Sam replied.
"Okay Sammy-o leave it with me." and with that Gabriel hung up on the younger Winchester and turned to Castiel who had stopped building to listen to the conversation.
"Let's look for a spell to talk to animals." Gabriel said smiling at his brother.
Castiel had stopped building when Gabriel's phone had gone off. There were only two people who had that number and he hoped that it wasn't either of the brothers phoning to say that the hunt had not gone well. They had only just got everyone inside the bunker back to how they should be. He didn't like it when any of them were hurt or ill. And he really didn't want Gabriel to have to go out after the Winchesters leaving him with only Kevin for company. Not that there was anything wrong with the prophet, but he spent most of his time working on the tablet, and Castiel did not think he would be able to defend the both of them. So When Gabriel informed him of the information that the Winchesters required he instantly jumped up to help. Anything he could do to make sure everyone stayed well he would do.
As such Castiel was very excited when half an hour later he came across a spell in the Inuit section of the bunker.
"Gabriel, Gabriel I think I've found something." He shouted running over to his brother with the book in his hand and an excited smile on his face.
"That's great Cassie." Gabriel replied taking the book from the fledgling and quickly reading through the spell. Yes it should work in getting the brothers talking to the dog, but what caught his eye was the possibility of side effects. Oh he so wished he could be there to watch whichever brother did the spell. It sounded like it would be most entertaining. With that he decided that this spell would do and as such phoned Sam to give it to him.
And when Sam called him later that day and told him Dean was barking at the mail man, scratching his ear and playing fetch with the trash Gabriel couldn't help himself. He couldn't stop laughing, in fact he was laughing so much that he fell off his chair and it took a full five minutes for him to be able to gasp out the idea of side effects before he was off laughing again so hard he didn't notice the line going dead.
Castiel watched his brother laughing he didn't understand what Gabriel found so funny but he liked it. He liked the happy sound and as such he smiled and then started to giggle along with Gabriel until he too was lying on the floor with his brother laughing out loud.
And this was how Kevin found them as he came in search of some food. Looking down at the two angels gasping for breath Kevin just shook his head and stepped over them to get to the kitchen. He did not want to know.
Sam and Dean returned a little worse for wear with Dean recovering from his time talking to animals and Sam with a deep gash in his neck from the crazy animal-eating man. As soon as they came through the door Dean pushed Sam into a chair and glared at Gabriel.
The archangel knew what he wanted and as such with a roll of his eyes he put two fingers to Sam's forehead and healed him before winding Dean up about his doggy experience.
It was a long time (at least a few days) before Gabriel stopped throwing balls of paper round the bunker yelling fetch to Dean along with other bad dog jokes. All of which seemed to go right over Castiel's head and made Sam smirk, a lot.
Things once again settled down in the bunker, though now Gabriel was practically watching over Kevin's shoulder (which frustrated the prophet no end). I mean how long did it take to translate a damn tablet? Yes they were safe right now, hell they even seemed to be somewhat happy, but he wanted his little brother back, and he knew he wasn't the only one. However much Dean liked looking after and playing with fledgling Cas Gabriel knew the hunter really wanted his best friend back again. But they could do nothing about it until they had that translation and discovered what Metatron had done to Castiel.
Four days after Dean and Sam returned Gabriel was searching the web for any information on the angels, having insisted on taking over that job from Dean and Sam on the reasoning that he had a better idea of what he was looking for, when something caught his eye. And it was not something good.
Four people had apparently gone missing in Rexford, Idaho presumed dead, but no bodies been released to the families and a strange substance found at the scenes. Gabriel clicked some more and dug a little deeper until he found the police reports on the cases. It seemed that all four of the victims had been severely depressed. And they had all had there bodies practically liquefied and exploded around the rooms in which they were found.
Gabriel knew that way of killing. Recognized it as the way the Rit Zien angels killed on the battle field. As painless as possible. Oh this was so not good.
"Hey boys. I got a case." He said out loud to Dean and Sam who were drawing with Cas and researching respectively.
"Oh yeah? What kind?" Dean asked putting down the pencils he had been using and moving so he could read the computer screen over Gabriel's shoulder.
"Angelic." Gabriel replied quietly.
"Okay, Sam let's get packed we'll leave in 10." Dean said having read the article, but before either of the brothers could move Gabriel spoke up.
"I don't think so Dean-o. This is my case." Gabriel replied with a hint of steel in his voice. He was not letting the Winchesters go off and fight this, no way.
"Oh yeah? What makes you say that?" Dean argued back. He was the hunter damn it. This was what they did.
"Hello archangel. This is mine to deal with not yours." Gabriel argued back with a roll of his eyes. Did Dean really think he could take on angels and win? Just who did he think he was?
"You're not going alone." Dean grumbled knowing that in this case Gabriel was right. Damn it, why did he keep forgetting the powers Gabe and Cas had?
"Aww worried about me? I can look after myself Dean-o." Gabriel replied with a smirk.
"This is an angel Gabriel. I'm coming with." Dean responded he was not taking no for an answer on this one. He still owed Gabriel help for the Abaddon thing.
"Please don't. I don't like it when you both leave." Castiel suddenly piped up. He didn't like it when they both left him. He felt so alone with only Sam and Kevin for company.
"Why doesn't Sam come with me then?" Gabriel asked evenly, it seemed like the logical solution to him.
"No." Dean replied before Sam could say a word, earning himself a bitchface from his brother.
"Dean-" Sam started to say but Dean cut him off. This was not a discussion.
"I said no Sam."
"Fine then we'll all go." Sam replied with exasperation at his brothers need to protect him at all times.
"Excuse me?" Gabriel said as at the same time Dean asked "You what?" both extremely confused. They couldn't all go and leave Castiel with just Kevin to protect him. That was not going to happen.
"You heard." Sam replied crossing his arms and glaring at both the men opposite him.
"But what about Cas?" Dean asked still completely confused by what the hell his brother was talking about, though Gabriel's confusion had turned thoughtful. He had started to understand just what Sam was saying.
"I said all Dean." Sam replied glaring at his brother until Dean finally understood what he was saying.
Dean wanted to shout hell no but he knew in this it wasn't just his choice, Gabriel had a say too. Though he was pretty sure that his response would be the same. "But- Gabe?"
While the brothers talked Gabriel had been watching Castiel. he had seen how sacred he looked when it seemed that he would be left behind, and he had seen the look of pure joy in his eyes and on his face when he understood that Sam meant for him to go with them as well, though when Dean said his name Gabriel saw his little brother trying to temper the emotions on his face encase he said no. Gabriel couldn't be the one to take that joy away from the fledgling, even if he really didn't want to take him out with them, especially not when they were going up against angels. But he just couldn't say no to that face. And he dared Dean-o to do so. As such his reply was not what Dean expected.
"I don't see why not. He deserves some time out of the place."
"I can come too?" Castiel asked in a hopeful voice with amazement in his eyes as he looked up at the men. He had been here in this bunker for what seemed like a long time, and through he knew it was safe here, he couldn't wait to see what the earth was actually like. He wanted to go out and see the trees and the flowers. See the animals and the insects, especially the bees. Castiel loved bees. Though thinking about it he couldn't remember when he had had the opportunity to see any bees. There weren't any in heaven, so how did he know he loved bees? Maybe it was one of the things he had forgotten when he fell. Like how he knew the impala. With a shake of his head he turned his pleading eyes to Dean as it seemed to him that they were all waiting for the righteous man to make his decision, and Castiel really wanted to go.
Dean looked down when Cas spoke, he was just about to scream at Gabriel about what the hell was he thinking, but looking down at the fledgling he saw exactly what Gabe was thinking. He was thinking that the damn baby angel could rival his brother with the freaking puppy dog eyes. And he too just couldn't say no.
"Fine, we'll all go."
And with that Dean stormed off to go pack his bag not at all happy about the situation. He did not want little Cas out there where he could get hurt. Not that Dean would let anything happen to the kid, but still. He was safer staying here.
