Steve barely saw what happened but his new height gave him a good view point to see Erksine get stabbed in the back by a man in suit that came from the observation room. The man turned and locked eyes with Steve "Hey" called Steve rushing to Erksine's side. The man sprinted up the stairs towards the express elevator, his mission was a success, he had killed Erksine and he had managed to grab one of the used syringes that would have a sample of the serum inside it, not to mention the surprise he left behind.
Peggy was able to react quickly and reach the elevator that her and Steve had used to reach the lab area, the assassin would beat her upstairs but not by much. She couldn't let him escape, she pulled out and double checked her pistol to make sure it was loaded.
Steve kneeled next to Erksine who was struggling to breath, "Hold on, ok we're going to get you some help" said Steve looking around. Philips was clearing people out of the room and Howard was getting a first aid kit. Steve put his hands on the wound and pressed down hoping to stop the bleeding. Erksine was pointing to something next to the machine "Don't worry about the machine we have to help you" said Steve trying to keep Erksine still.
Stark got down next to Steve and started opening up the med kit when he looked and saw what Erksine was pointing at, it was a timer counting down "It's a bomb" he said prompting Steve to look at him and then at the bomb. "Looks like we got 40 seconds" informed Stark.
Steve looked down and could see that Erksine was trying to get them to leave "No I'm not leaving you here" he said trying to open the kit himself after he did he looked down and saw that Erksine had stopped breathing. Tears began to flow down Steve's face and Stark began to pull at him.
"We got to go" said Stark pulling Steve up and pulling him towards the stairs so they could escape the blast.
The assassin sprinted through the hall after the elevator doors opened, he pulled a weapon and opened fire on the shop keeper catching her in the collar bone before she could react. Peggy ran out of the elevator once the doors opened as she saw the assassin get out the front door of the shop. She gave chase but stopped once the Hydra agent fired a few shots back into the building forcing her to stop to take cover. The Hydra agent stopped to see if he had managed to hit her but soon was under fire by Colonel Philips who had used the escape passage that led to the shop next door to get the politicians and scientists out of the building. The Hydra agent returned fire and retreated to a car that had come to a halt behind him. His backup had arrived in form of three more agents and they provided covering fire for him as he jumped into the back seat. Peggy came out of the shop and opened fire on the car as it sped by trying to escape.
Steve and Howard climbed the stairs and got to the top floor when the timer on the bomb reached zero. Howard and Steve felt the blast hit him and Howard sending them flying out the front of the shop as well as putting Peggy and Philips down as well. Steve got up and checked on Howard, since Peggy and Philips were already getting up "I'm fine, go get them" said Howard shaking the cob webs loose. Steve nodded and saw the car turning right at the intersection, he turned and ran down an alley knowing the neighborhood well enough to know that he could cut them off. He started running and found himself moving faster than he could possibly believe. He turned the corner at the end of the alley and ran into a parked car putting a huge dent into the passenger door, he surprised to find that he barely felt the car that he ran into. He ran towards the street and saw the Hydra agents in their car. He got close enough and jumped onto the roof of the car. The Hydra agents were screaming in German at Steve who reached in and pulled one of them out of the window and threw him into the street. The Hydra agent tried to turn the car into the harbor but Steve managed reach in and grab the wheel causing the car to spin out of control. Steve was thrown off the roof and rolled to a stop at the curb. The car proceeded to flip and roll about twenty yards before stopping just outside the gate of the New York Harbor.
The man who killed Erksine looked over and saw that the crash had killed the driver, he scanned the wreckage and saw that the syringe from the machine was destroyed in the crash as well. The other agent was already climbing out the other side of the car, he groaned as he pulled himself free and tried to get into the harbor. He could lose Rogers in there on the way to his escape. Steve stood up and saw the two agents getting up as well. The second agent started firing a machine gun at Steve causing him to dive and take cover behind a car as the agent who killed Erksine got through the gate. Steve tried to move but was fired on every time he showed any movement, he saw a trash can lid sitting on the ground and had an idea. When the agent stopped to reload Steve lunged forward grabbed the trash can lid and threw it like a Frisbee catching the shooter right in the chin knocking him out cold. Peggy came speeding around the corner in a car of her own and stopped by the shooter and knew that one more was still running around "Go and get the last one, I got this guy handled" she said pulling her gun and pointing it at him.
Steve nodded and ran into the harbor to find the last Hydra agent, he rounded the corner and looked on the ground and could see blood on the ground which he assumed would lead him to Erksine's killer. He followed slowly not wanting to run into an ambush that the assassin could be setting up for him. He followed it to one of the docks and saw the assassin pushing a button on some kind of device. A small submarine came up from below the water next to where the assassin was standing, Steve ran and tackled the man down and gave him several punches to the head. The assassin reached over and pushed a red button on the device causing the sub to explode making Steve stumble backwards. This gave the assassin enough time to pull out his last resort "Hail Hydra" he cried out shoving a pill into his mouth and swallowing it. Steve watched the man convulse and die in mere moments.
Peggy handed the remaining agent over to other SSR agents and went to Steve "We have to get back to the lab and check up with Colonel Philips and Stark" she ordered. She moved to look him in the eye when he didn't respond and found him to be crying. She sighed it was Erksine, the only person who never doubted him and now he was gone before Steve could prove him right. She knelt down in front of him and pulled him into a hug "It's okay" she said as they sat there mourning the loss of Erksine.
Philips and Stark were sitting the wreckage of the lab when Steve and Peggy returned "How bad is it?" asked Steve noticing that Erksine's body had already been moved.
"Catastrophic" replied Stark "We lost the only prototype of the machine and the only sample remaining of the serum."
"What about his notes?" asked Peggy recalling Erksine always writing things down.
"His main one was with him and was lost in the blast but he never wrote down the formula since he feared that spies might try and steal it from him" explained Stark pulling out a syringe "We need to take a sample of your blood, it's the only shot we have of ever recreating the serum" he said taking a sufficient sample and handing it over to one of the scientists.
"Now what?" asked Steve.
Philips looked at him "This attack and the intel that we have received, the United States government has come to believe that Hydra is acting outside the power of Germany and has ordered that we go after them at all costs. We now have jurisdiction over all other branches of the military until Hydra is defeated" explained Philips "Stark will be outfitting us with the best equipment that money can buy."
"Unless its Hydra stuff" said Howard getting him a look of confusion from Philips. "The bomb they used, I'm willing to bet that it's the most advanced bomb this world has ever seen and knowing them there is more of that coming."
"Sir" said Steve stepping forward prompting Philips to turn to face him "I want to help."
"He managed to beat four Hydra agents on day one inside a body he is still learning how to control" informed Peggy.
Philips nodded "Guess that's earned you a spot" he said shaking Steve's hand.
"When do we start?" asked Steve.
"An hour ago" replied Philips.
