Dean and Cas made their way through the creaking door of the barn and Dean pulled out his EMF detector, though Cas could have told him that it would get a reading. There was something in there, but to Cas at least, it did not feel evil. Not that he had much experience of evil things, well excluding the demon Crowley, even thinking about him made a shiver run up his spine and so Castiel concentrated on the here and now and put the demon that the Winchesters had in their bunker from his mind. He was here to help Dean. He needed to concentrate on the feelings he was getting from this place. So he turned his concertation back to Dean in time to hear him mutter
"All right, Casper... Where're you at?"
It was then that Dean heard a noise. As such he put his EMF detector away and grabbed Cas so that he was behind him as he made his way to another door, opening it he walked inside calling out for what he had thought was the kid that was here.
"Hello? Anybody here?" Dean called. Castiel on the other hand turned to find himself face to face with a young boy holding a toy of some sort. Not that Castiel could understand that that was what it was, but it wasn't the action figure that had caught his attention. It was the aura this boy was giving off. It wasn't right in some strange way.
Dean turned and saw Cas just staring at the kid who was probably around the same age as the fledging, well if Cas were human at any rate. And the kid was just staring right back at him. Weird. With a shake of his head Dean spoke to the kid. He might have some information about what was going on here, you never know what kids see.
"Hey, kid, what are you doing in here by yourself?" Dean asked smiling at him to show him he meant no harm.
"Fighting monsters." The kid replied making Castiel's eyes widen, what was a human child, because he had established that that was what he was, doing fighting monsters? Surely he was to young to be a hunter.
"What kind of monsters?" Dean asked in a friendly tone.
"All sorts, with Bruce the monster smasher." The kid replied holding up the toy in his hand making Castiel frown. I mean how could a toy such as that one fight monsters? It wasn't sharp enough to do any harm, nor was it magical in any way.
"Hm. Is that a cape? Little impractical for smashing monsters, huh? You know, you could choke-" Dean started to reply but then boy cut him off by activating the doll and making it say "I clobber evil." At which Dean chuckled and Castiel suddenly understood what was happening.
It seemed that the child was playing make believe with his toy. Both Charlie and Dean had tried to explain that concept to him, but he had never fully grasped it. With that realisation he tuned out of the rest of the conversation and went back to studying the boy, trying to work, out what it was about him that was not right. It took a while, but Castiel finally realised what it was. It also explained what it was that Dean and Sam where here to hunt. He would have to tell them, but not in front of the boy. He didn't want Dean getting hurt by the spirit of the child's mother.
And so he waited for the child, Timmy he had said his name was, to return to the house before turning to Dean and talking for the first time in days.
"He has a spirit attached to his soul." He said quietly making Dean do a double take at first Cas was talking and then at what he had said. With that Dean crouched down so he was level with the fledging.
"You sure?" He asked, not that he really questioned it. Cas was an angel and if he said that a spirit was attached to the kid then Dean believed him.
"Of course, I can feel it." Castiel replied looking into Deans eyes with a completely honest look on his face.
"Crap," Dean muttered running a hand over his face at the idea of the spirit they were hunting attaching itself to a kid. "Do you know what kind of spirit?" he asked hoping that Cas could give him some more details.
"His mother. She wants to protect him." Castiel replied looking off towards the door Timmy had left by as if he was still studying the boy.
"Right. What we supposed to do now?" Dean asked standing again, though the question was rhetorical, he didn't expect Cas to have an answer to that. Which was good, as all the fledging did was shrug his shoulders and reach to take Deans hand once more, all without saying a word.
Looking down at Cas, Dean guessed he was done talking for now so with a sigh he made his way back outside. They needed to find Sam and come up with a plan.
Sam had searched the house and found no EMF, he had found Deans old bed and Ruth the housekeeper who had told him the story of the guy who had killed his wife who was having an affair with the guy who had been killed in the barn. So that was a definite possibility for the ghost haunting this joint. With that intel he made his way back down the stairs and out the door in the hopes of finding Dean and Cas only to spot them walking back from the barn, still hand in hand. It was kinda sweet watching them, if a little weird. I mean Cas was actually Deans friend, but looking at them now you could easily mistake them for father and child, despite the difference in colouring.
"Sam hey, we got something." Dean called as he saw his brother and went to join him in the yard.
"So did I." Sam replied when they reached him.
"Oh yeah, what?" Dean asked, wondering what Sam had found and how it related to the Timmy situation.
"Ruth, the housekeeper? She told me a story about the guy who died and how he had had an affair with this other guy who promised to kill him. He died last month." Sam explained, happy that it had been that easy to sort out.
"It's not him." Castiel said into the conversation, of that he was sure. It was the child's mother.
"What? Cas?" Sam asked completely confused the fledgling talking let alone telling him he was wrong. But when he looked to Cas he said nothing else, so Sam turned his quizzical expression on his brother.
"Cas said that the spirit of one of the kid's mothers has attached itself to him. And is trying to protect him." Dean replied for the baby angel.
"But why kill the guy?" Sam asked really confused by this.
"Cos he was a hard ass, Sam." Dean replied with a roll of his eyes. What did his brother think?
"Okay, so what do we do?" Sam asked, so his theory was wrong, but at least they knew what they were dealing with now. Even if it wasn't a simple salt and burn as he had hoped.
"Beats me. Not like we can gank the kid." Dean replied running a hand through his hair as he tried to think of anything that they could do to exorcize the ghost.
"No, but maybe we can get him to persuade his mom to leave him alone?" Sam suggested with a shrug.
"You really think that's going to work?" Dean asked in disbelief, was his brother freakin' kidding him?
"You any better ideas?" Sam defended.
"Well no but… really?" Dean asked he couldn't believe that this was there plan. To persuade a kid to get his mom to leave. It so wasn't going to work.
