After Cas had finished his conversation with Gabriel, Sam and Dean silently agreed to return to the bunker. Though Dean now did so with a lighter heart. He was glad that Cas was back to his old fledging self, or as much as he could be when he missed his big brother, and if Cas was happy then Dean was happy. Of course seeing that his brother was more relaxed now that Cas had started interacting with them again made Sam more relaxed as well, as such it was a rather relaxed and happy group of three who returned to the bunker. Once there the first thing that Cas did was go and get the drawings he had done of Gabriel during the recent nights to show both Dean and Sam. Though Sam just nodded and said the right words, Dean studied them closely and told the fledgling how proud he was of him and how clever he was, and once again Sam was transported to his own childhood when Dean had done the same for him, the thought made him smile, as did the realisation that Dean was giving Cas something that he had never had, well except maybe from Gabriel, and that was a proper loving upbringing.
And so the occupants of the bunker settled back down into their daily routine, with Sam cataloguing and researching with Cas' help, Dean cooking and cleaning and basically mothering them all, Kevin mumbling over his hunk of stone, and Crowley, who had slipped the mind of some of the residents, being his usual snarky self, though he had started offering Dean outrageous deals on the rare occasions the older Winchester visited him in hopes of getting more information. Dean got to the point where he was tempted to kill him just to put him out of his misery, but he didn't. He had no idea what was going to happen and they may well need the king of hell in the coming weeks or months. So he left him rotting in their dungeon and kept his visits to a minimum.
It was a peaceful evening, a couple of days after their return and Dean was just thinking he should go start on dinner when Kevin came tearing into the library of the bunker.
"I've done it." He shouted out as if he had solved the greatest mystery of the universe, though thinking about it Dean wasn't sure he hadn't.
"Let's see." Sam said holding out his hand and collecting the pages of incomprehensible symbols. With one quick look he pulled out his phone and took pictures while Dean pulled out his and called the only person they knew who could read it.
"Hello Dean-o. What can I do for you?" came Gabriel's voice down the line.
"Kevin's finished translating the tablet, Sam is sending you the symbols now." Dean replied looking over at his brother to check his words were in fact correct.
At that Gabriel pulled the phone from his ear and stared at the screen until the pictures came through, he opened them quickly and scanned them, knowing that Dean and Sam would be just as anxious to know what they said as he was.
"Well?" Dean demanded when he felt that Gabriel had been quiet for too long in his mind.
"Weeeell, it says three things of importance, the rest is just waffle." Gabriel replied and Dean could practically hear the archangel roll his eyes at him, not that he cared. They were close to opening heaven and getting Cas back to his real self and nothing Gabriel did or said would damped Dean's excitement at that.
"So what are the three things?" He demanded when Gabriel's dramatic pause continued, making Gabriel chuckle to himself at how frustrated Dean sounded before he responded.
"First off the spell is reversible. I need to extract the grace and return it to the angel it came from and the spell will collapse. Second the spell has to be kept in heaven to work, and thirdly the spell can be tracked by the angel's grace, but only by the angel's grace which has been used in it."
This statement was followed by silence as Dean took in the words Gabriel had said and Sam glared at him wanting to know what was being spoken, not that Dean would tell him, he knew that. He knew Dean would not speak of this in front of Castiel, but he really wanted to know.
"So what does all that mean?" Dean asked when he had finally processed it all.
"It means I now know what I need to find. I'll call when I have something." And with that Gabriel hung up the phone leaving Dean frowning at his end. That was it? Gabriel could tell him nothing else? Damn it. At that he sighed as he put his phone down and stared at his brother silently telling him that the waiting would be continuing. He would have to explain it all to Sam later when Cas wasn't within hearing range.
Of course Dean had forgotten that Castiel was an angel and therefore could hear both sides of that conversation as clear as day. And as such while the fledgling pretended to carry on with what he had been doing before Kevin had come bursting in he was in fact thinking. It seemed that the grace that he was apparently missing was being used in some spell in heaven, was that the spell that threw all the angels from their home? If so, why was his grace inside it? What had happened to him before he fell? Yet again these where questions he couldn't answer, but Castiel had the distinct impression that both Dean and Gabriel could. The real question was, did he truly want to know? They hadn't told him for a reason, surely he was better as he was, that he should just trust them to do what needed to be done, and it sounded like they would return his grace to him. Maybe then he would know all that it seemed he had forgotten. Yes that was the best course of action, trust in Gabriel and Dean to do what needed to be done. With that decided Castiel turned his mind back to his drawing and taking out a new sheet of paper decided it was time he drew his family, Gabriel, Dean, Sam and Kevin.
