Quasimodo had been looking for Regina for a long time. He hadn't missed a corner of the cathedral when, after returning from the market, he found his wife no longer in bed. There was no sign of her. She was swallowed up by the earth. After failing to find Regina, Quasimodo went looking for Brother Martin. But he couldn't be found either. He tried to get an audience with the archdeacon but was denied because the archdeacon had been restored to the kingship. Quasimodo was alone and at a loss. No one knew anything about the whereabouts of his wife or brother Martin. Quasimodo couldn't sleep that night and when he finally found Brother Martin the next morning, he was out of his mind.
"The witch will burn...", he had only repeated again and again. He doesn't even respond to Quasimodo's questions.
The following day, a great noise was heard from Brother Martin's cell, as if someone were smashing all the furniture with their bare hands. That's pretty much how it was. In a rage, Brother Martin smashed the table and threw the chair around until one of them broke.
"Bloody witch!" cursed Brother Martin, "That was witchcraft!" Quasimodo looked at this scene more than confused, until suddenly several monks came out of the Hotel Dieu. They grabbed Brother Martin and tied his hands behind his back so he could not hurt them or himself. Quasimodo had to help them because Brother Martin was hard to tame. Only the strong bell ringer could bring the insane Brother Martin to the ground so that the monks could fix his arms. Then he was taken to the Hotel Dieu. But Quasimodo still wanted to know what had become of Regina. He tried to see Brother Martin a few times, but the monks and sisters turned him away, saying that Brother Martin was in no condition to receive visitors.
Almost a week passed before Quasimodo saw this stranger in his bell tower. He wore armor like a soldier's and carried a sword at his hip. He had broad shoulders that suggested to Quasimodo that he was quite capable of defending himself. Therefore, Quasimodo decided not to attack him directly, but from an ambush. He succeeded, surprisingly easier than he thought, and when he brought the stranger to the ground, thinking the stranger wanted something for him, the stranger let him know that he knew where his wife was. Quasimodo immediately let go of him and helped him up. Quasimodo followed him to a house in a small alley. Here Regina was waiting for him. Quasimodo's heart skipped a beat when he saw her. Regina looked pale and had bloodshot eyes, but she was alive! That was all that mattered to him. He hugged and kissed her happily. He had missed her so badly.
After Regina told him his story, Quasimodo began to think about how he could help Regina. All his reflections came to one conclusion: "How about leaving Paris?" he asked her.
Regina's look spoke volumes: "I should leave Paris?! How?!", she cursed.
At that moment, Raphael, who had brought Quasimodo, entered the room.
Quasimodo briefly felt an impulse to grab this Raphael and kill him. After all, he had kidnapped his wife. He had brought her to the Bastille, because of him she had lost their child and now she looked so miserable... but this man, for whatever reason, had saved Regina. He had helped her escape from the Bastille. The bell ringer couldn't explain why. But if it hadn't been for Raphael, Regina would be dead now, that much was certain.
Raphael stepped closer to the two and asked: "Is there a problem?"
And then came the sentence from Regina, because of which Quasimodo would have sunk in shame: "Oh yes! My husband wants to get rid of me!"
The bell ringer looked embarrassed at the dark-haired man in front of them and shifted his feet nervously. He started to stammer, "Er... I... er..."
Raphael looked impatiently at the bell ringer: "What do you want?"
"Thank you. For saving her," Quasimodo said then.
Regina was seething with anger. How could Quasimodo ask her to leave Paris? Alone? She thought he loved her. Regina was very disappointed in Quasimodo.
"I don't want to interfere but... I think the hunchback is right.", Raphael said.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"These enemies you have are powerful. You will be persecuted as long as you are here. Only if you step outside of their circle of power will you survive," said Raphael.
"But... Notre Dame is my home.", Regina said and gave Quasimodo a long, sad look.", Where should I go?"
"Reims.", Quasimodo said, "I'm sure my family will take you in if you explain to them what happened."
"And what about you?" Regina asked him.
"I'll stay here for a while and observe the situation. But don't worry, I'll follow." Quasimodo said and put his hand on Regina's shoulder.
"Okay." Regina said with a heavy sigh.
"Get some rest." Quasimodo said and kissed her cheek. Then he pushed Raphael out of the room and he left right behind the mercenary.
When Quasimodo had closed the door, he handed the soldier a money box full of money.
"What's that about?" asked Raphael.
"I want you to accompany Regina to Reims. You will protect her because I can't. I want to make people think Regina is back in the tower with me while you leave for Reims. That way I'll give you time ." said Quasimodo.
Raphael nodded to Quasimodo: "If you wish..."
"Yes... should you touch her against her will... there is no place in the world where you could hide.", Quasimodo said and looked angrily at Raphael.
Raphael was well aware of the Hunchback's enormous strength. He knew full well that Quasimodo could snap his neck in no time. All his combat experience wouldn't prevent that. Raphael nodded to Quasimodo and positioned himself next to the closed door. Quasimodo left the inn and returned to the cathedral. He didn't feel comfortable leaving Regina alone with a strange man. But he had no choice but to keep Regina safe. Raphael looked strong, he would know how to defend himself and Regina, that's why he had entrusted Regina to Raphael. Quasimodo simply trusted that the two could safely leave Paris...
