Thunder sounded off above their heads. Rain dripped from the holes in the ceiling. Another card flew over the ground and landed in one of the few remaining dry spots. The wind howled fiercely around the abandoned cottage.

Gambit whistled, "Sure is raining cats and dogs out there."

A flick of the tail was all the response that he got. Gambit sighed. Over the past few months, his 'companion' has gotten quieter and quieter. Gambit stood up stretching his body. Looking outside, Gambit also realized that they have been settling down in more and more isolated places.

'He is getting worse,' Gambit thought. 'This does not bode well at all.'

He looked back at the young adult and sighed. Gambit had met him when he was out…um….'running an errand' for his father. Of course by errand, this meant that Gambit was gathering intel for his father. Well the mutant did not care much feelings for the one he called Dad, the guy sure did know how to pay well.

_Flashback_

So there Gambit was sneaking into another building to score some intel and possibly some other things for father, when he came across something that made him stop dead in his tracks. The sitting in a cage was a mutant.

Gambit knew this young mutant. He was part of the X-MEN. Gambit wondered how this X-MAN got caught, since they all traveled in a pack at all times. However, by the look of him, it would appear that he had been there for a while. His clothes were dirty and ripped his fur looked a bit clumped in areas. If Gambit remembered correctly then this mutant had the power to teleport. So the question arose that if he could teleport, then why was he sitting in a cage? Why not escape or why hadn't the X-MEN shown up to rescue their comrade?

'All good questions Gambit,' he thought. 'But I got other things to do at the moment.'

With one last look at the mutant, Gambit slinked off into the darkness to finish his job.

'These guys need better security,' Gambit thought silently chuckling. 'This is almost too easy.'

Click.

"Aw Gambit spoke too soon it would seem," Gambit said as he raised his hands and slowly turned around. "I'm sure ya momma taught 'cha not to play with guns. My mom taught me how to play with cards. Want to see?"

With a flick of a wrist, Gambit threw two kinetic charged cards at the enemy. Both hitting their marks and exploding.

"Well that will alert the others that I'm here," Gambit said as he ran out the door.

He stopped for a second. Slipping another card into his hand, Gambit looked around. He decided that it might be a good idea to slow down the pursuers.

"Remy may as well have a little fun with this," he said to himself.

Be threw the cards at the ceiling and ran as they too hit the marks. The ceiling started collapsing as Gambit made around the corner. He chuckled at himself.

"I'm sure Dad isn't going to like this very much but oh well."

Once again Gambit stopped; he had come back to the room with the caged mutant.

"Yo, why are ya still in there," Gambit asked walking up to the cage. "Ya can teleport right?"

The mutant flicked his tail shaking their head. "Not any more."

"What about ya pals," Gambit inquired. "Do you know when they coming?"

The mutant shrugged. "Probably never. I ran away."

"Well I ain't going to leave in the cage," Gambit said as he worked on the lock.

"Why," the mutant questioned. "Why would you help me?"

"Cuz I ain't leaving no mutant with these people," Gambit said. "They'll either sell ya or make ya work for them. Either way ya don't want that."

With that said, Gambit had finished picking the lock on the cage. He reached inside to help the younger mutant up. Upon grabbing his hand, he realized that mutant may not have a lot to eat for quite some time. This thought was proven when the mutant stumbled out of the cage.

"It is no use," the mutant exclaimed. "I can varely stand, let alone walk."

"Then Remy will just have carry ya. Here hop on Remy's back," Gambit said turning and kneeling.

Gambit turned his head to the side and watch the mutant hesitate to climb on his back.

"Nothing ta be scared of," he said. "Remy don't bite. We got to hurry though, the other guards should be here soon."

The mutant looked up and stared straight into Gambit's eyes. He had seen those eyes before. This young life had given up. This young mutant had the eyes of death.

"Look," Gambit said. "If ya wants ta die then go ahead. But don't died in a place like this. This place is a horrible place ta die in."

A tongue darted out across the young mutant's lips.

"Kurt," the mutant said. "My name is Kurt."

_End_

It had been two years since that day and the two had been stuck together since then. Gambit couldn't leave this child by himself.

"Why do you keep folloving," Kurt asked.

"No one should be a alone," Gambit said.

"I vant to ve a alone," Kurt said.

"Well I don't," Gambit said.

Lighting flashed lighting up the cabin, thunder roared shaking the cabin to its foundation. But that was the only sound that filled the cabin. If anyone was any where the cabin that night, they would have a bloodcurdling scream.
