When they arrived through the portal Dean suddenly felt another tug. What the-? Before he could even form a question to ask Gabriel what the hell was going on he found himself back in his room in the bunker. Seemed that his soul had decided that if he was to haunt the Earth it was to do it connected to his body. Turning he saw the grinning archangel beside him still had a hold of his arm. With a glare he shook him off but before he could say another word Cas turned and saw the both, his eyes lighting up.
"Your back." He screamed running to hug his brother before doing the same to Dean, which he felt was a little weird considering anything else he tried to touch his hand just went through.
At Cas' scream Sam had also looked up, though he could only see Gabriel.
"Dean?" He asked, suddenly worried that the archangel had left him in heaven.
"Is right here Sammy boy. Fear not." Gabriel replied before turning to his brother who was now standing in front of the two who had gone to heaven.
When he knew he had Castiel's attention Gabriel slowly drew the bottle filled with grace from his inside pocket and presented it to the fledgling as if giving him the best gift in the world. But Castiel didn't take it. He just stood there looking at it in wary confusion.
"Here kiddo. It's your grace." Gabriel said holding it out once more to the fledgling who took a step back, away from the swirling light in the bottle. At that Dean crouched down next to Cas with a frown.
"Hey Cas. What's up buddy?" Dean he asked reaching out for the fledgling who looked so scared by the bottle in Gabriel's hand.
"I don't want it back." Castiel whispered into the quiet of the room and wrapping his arms around himself keeping his hands out of sight as if by doing that then no one could make him take the bottle of grace.
"Why not?" Dean asked confused. Why would Cas not want to be who he was once more?
"I…I don't want to change." Castiel replied his voice shaking with fear as he turned his eyes to Dean. That sentence reminded Dean of another one, one he had spoken so many years ago now. When he had told Cas to never change. It was a stupid request, to make. Of course Cas had changed. But…
"No matter what, you'll always be Cas." Dean said with certainty, cos he knew for a fact that was true. Cos while Cas changed, he had always been Cas.
"But… I'll be full grown, will I not?" Castiel asked trying to get Dean to understand.
At that sentence Gabriel crouched down next to Dean and joined the conversation.
"Yes Cassie, you will." Gabriel said simply. It was after all the truth.
"I… don't know how to be an adult angel." Castiel replied his voice still shaking about the unknown and what would happen to him if he took the bottle still in Gabriel's hand.
"You take back your grace and it'll all come back to you." Gabriel reassured him. He understood that Castiel was afraid that even if he was full grown he would not remember how to be so. But all his memories, who he truly was, was held in the grace Gabriel had in his hand. He just needed his brother to take it. To come back to him.
"What… what kind of angel was I?" Castiel asked turning to Gabriel who just opened and closeed his mouth, he had no answer to that. It was a question he couldn't answer. He never truly knew adult Castiel. He had never been there for him when he was full grown. Though he vowed that this time it would be different, if Castiel would let it be once he had taken back his grace. This time Gabriel would be there for him always, just as a brother should.
"The best kind. One willing to do anything and everything to protect his family. One who may have made mistakes, but still did everything possible to make them better. You're the angel that fought for humanity and you're my best friend Cas." Dean answered when it seemed Gabriel couldn't. He wasn't sure where that answer came from. It was definitely going into the realm of chick-flick talk, but then Dean realised he would do anything to get his friend back to who he really was. Oh he knew that Cas would be upset when he remembered all he had done. But Dean, Sam and Gabriel would be there to help him through it. They just needed him to return.
"I don't know." Castiel said once more, his wide, frightened eyes turning to look between Gabriel and Dean who were so sure he should become the angel once was again. Maybe they were right? Maybe he had been a good angel.
Gabriel watched Castiel's indecision and knew they were near to getting him convinced to do it. What they needed was that final incentive that would push the fledgling over the edge. But what could he use? It was then that it came to him. It was a low, manipulative move. But Gabriel would put money on the fact it would work. Taking a deep breath he spoke.
"The only way to open heaven and bring Dean back to life is for you to take the grace Cassie. You don't want Dean to die, do you?" Gabriel asked, hating himself even as the words left his mouth. Hating how he was manipulating the fledging in that way. And from the look Dean sent him the elder Winchester wasn't too keen on him for it either.
"Will you both still be here for me when I'm grown again?" Castiel asked, his arms loosening and his hand starting to reach out to the bottle in Gabriel's hand.
"Always Cassie. I'll never leave you." Gabriel replied with a vow. Of course there was always the option that when Castiel was full grown he wouldn't want Gabriel round, but they would cross that bridge when they came to it.
"Yeah Cas, you bet." Dean replied with a smile at the thought of getting his best friend back. God knows he had missed Cas.
With that confirmation from the both of them Castiel reached out for the bottle of grace with shaking hands and Sam realising what was about to happen quickly vacated the room. He rather liked having his eyes in his head thank you very much.
Once the door closed behind Sam, Castiel, slowly and with great concentration, eased the top off of the bottle, as soon as it was realised the grace contained inside swirled out to him. Castiel opened his mouth and it streamed inside, and the more grace that returned to its true home, the taller Castiel seemed to grow, the older he looked, the more he started to resemble the adult vessel that Castiel had made his own. And once all the grace was inside him, and he had returned to the adult that he truly was, lightening flashed through the room revealing on the walls behind him a shadow of his wings, as undammed and pure as they had been when Dean had first seen them in the barn after he had returned from hell.
Castiel, the angel of the lord, was back.
