Once the lightening had gone and Castiel was just as he had always been, wearing his badly fitting suit, blue tie and beige trench coat Dean looked around. He had thought that there might be some kind of sign that heaven had reopened or something. He was just about to turn to Gabriel and question him when suddenly there was a massive sound of thunder that rocked the bunker to its foundations, which was an achievement considering it was underground. If Dean had been in his body he was sure he would have fallen over at the shock waves that were pounding through the building. Once they subsided he turned Gabriel.
"What the hell?" He demanded of the archangel, but before Gabriel could reply there was a flutter of wings and Hannah was standing in front of them. When she saw Castiel her eyes widened.
"Castiel." She breathed not believing that he was back to who he used to be. It was rather amazing.
"Hannah." He inclined his head to her but said no more. As such she remembered her reasoning for coming into this room.
"Commander, heaven has been re-opened. I was wondering what your orders were." She said to Gabriel.
"Go back to headquarters, get everyone upstairs. I'll be there soon to sort everything out. There's just something I have to do down here first." Gabriel replied his eyes turning to the body on the bed. Hannah's eyes followed his and then went the spirit standing next to her commander.
"Of course." And with that she flew away to marshal all the angels to follow Gabriel's orders.
"Right Dean-o. Ready to be undead, again?" Gabriel asked with a smirk as he reached over and placed his fingers on Dean forehead.
Dean watched the fingers go down and suddenly he was lying on the bed opening his eyes and looking up at Gabriel. Well that wasn't disorientating at all.
"What the hell happened Gabe?" He asked as he sat up and stretched his muscles.
"I brought you back to life?" Gabriel replied with a cheeky smile. He knew exactly what Dean was asking, but he wasn't about to let a chance to annoy the man pass him by.
"You know what I mean. Did we really blow up heaven?" Dean asked glaring at the archangel, yeah okay he had thought it would be cool, but there were people up there. He wouldn't want any of them to get hurt or anything.
"No. that was just the gates opening, we were the epicentre because Cassie's grace was the key." Gabriel replied seeing the tension in Dean and guessing correctly he was worried about the friends and family he had up in heaven.
"Okay." Dean replied with a nod. That he could understand. Suddenly the door to his room burst open and there standing in the doorway with his hair a mess was Sam.
"Dean." His brother said with as much feeling as it was possible to get into a word. With that Sam ran over to him and pulled him up before pulling him into a hug.
"Hey Sammy, I'm fine." Dean replied with a smile on his lips as he hugged his brother back. It was good to be able to touch again.
"So Cas. How you feeling?" he asked as he turned to the angel once Sam had let him go.
"I am fine Dean. It is good to see you alive again." Castiel replied with a smile for Dean that was reminiscent of the one the fledgling had been giving him for months.
"Yeah it's good to see you as well." Dean said going over and pulling Castiel into a hug, just as his brother had done to him. All his family were back now. Everything was right with the world.
"Thank you. For everything." Castiel said once he and Dean parted.
"No need to thank me Cas. You're family, it's what family does." Dean replied with a shrug and a smile.
"Yes." Castiel nodded. His time as a fledgling had made him understand Dean's concept of family better than he ever had before. Suddenly there was a dramatic cough from the archangel in the room.
"And me? I helped." Gabriel grumbled, but he was still smiling. Though Castiel could feel a certain uncertainty from his brother and he knew what it was about. There were many things he and Gabriel would need to discuss.
"Thank you Gabriel for taking care of me. We should return to heaven now." Castiel said with a smile for his brother. Even if Gabriel had deserted him over the last few years, he was still his brother and when Castiel had needed him the most he had returned. And now he was to lead heaven.
"Yeah, guess so." Gabriel replied with a put upon sigh before his eyes twinkled making Castiel suddenly go on alert. "Don't suppose you want to take over and leave me free to do what I please?"
"No." was Castiel adamant reply. He really wasn't leader material, he had learnt that a long time ago when he tried to become god.
"Didn't think so. Oh well I'll just have to make you my second in command then." Gabriel said with a shrug. He was going to make sure he had Cassie at his side. He was the only other angel that would ever be able to truly understand him after all.
"Hannah is your second Gabriel." Castiel replied with a frown. He did not want to start arguments in heaven by displacing any other angel from their position in the hierarchy.
"What? I'm not allowed more than one? I'm the leader of the heavenly host Cassie. I make the rules now." Gabriel said with a smirk and that twinkle once again in his eyes.
"Father help us all." Castiel replied closing his eyes as thoughts of what Gabriel could, and no doubt would, get up to in heaven filled his head. It was definitely possible that this could well be the stuff of nightmares for angels for millennia to come.
"Yeah, I wish. We'd better go." Gabriel answered seriously turning to his brother who nodded.
"You'll be coming back though right? This isn't like permanent goodbye of anything is it?" Dean asked suddenly fearful of what was happening. With Gabriel running heaven Cas would be welcomed back with open arms, and that would mean he wouldn't have to stay on earth any more. Surely he would still visit though, right? They were family, he had too many of that in heaven as it was thank you very much.
"Well that depends on my new commander." Castiel replied with a raise of his eyebrows at Gabriel who turned to Dean with his customary mischievous look.
"Oh Dean-o, do you really think I'm going to pass up the opportunity to mess with you in the future? Do you not know me at all?" And with a little wave of his fingers Gabriel flew off dragging his brother with him leaving Dean with a frown on his face and Sam with a look of some relief. At least now it was just him and Dean, and Kevin he added as the prophet stuck his head round the door and smiled at the walking talking Dean. Yes, they could get back to normal now that they had no angel issues to deal with. Though first he was planning on sleeping for like a week. Watching over the body of your dead brother really wasn't that relaxing.
