Ace had only ever heard of the beach. He could never remember visiting with his family when he was younger and he never knew how to get there after everything that could possibly tear apart your world happened.

But now here he was, standing on the sandy ground, toes buried in the grains, a light breeze cooling him, as he stared out at the vast expanse of blue.

He was speechless.

He had never seen anything be this beautiful before – well, except for his Mama, but even though he thought that, he couldn't remember much about her anymore.

"Freckles-ya, what are you doing?" A finger poked his forehead and Ace looked up, frowning in the direction of Law. Law blinked before smirking down at the boy, beginning to drag him down the beach and closer to the water. "Come on, have you been swimming before?"

Ace frowned and shook his head. Law blinked a little then gave a small, mischevious smile.

"Well, we should change that, shouldn't we."

Before Ace could understand what was happening, he was submerged in salty water.

He coughed when he surfaced again and looked up at Law, who held him under the armpits, grinning like the cat that got the cream. Ace glared up at him, miffed, before feeling something slimy against his leg.

Deciding that it would be funny, he grabbed it and threw it at Law's face.

He had never heard the teen scream like such a little girl before. Ace stood on his tip toes in the water, laughing loudly as the seaweed fell from the teens face. Law glared at Ace hard, frowning, before shoving his head underwater. Ace, mouth open, was shocked, and when Law pulled him back up he began coughing. He glared up at Law who smirked and dove into the water, swimming out to where Ace couldn't touch.

Ace stared at him curiously as he moved to where he could stand with everything under his shoulders submerged.

Law held up his hands, dripping with water, and waved lightly at Ace.

"C'mon. You wanna learn to swim, right? Try getting over here."

Ace stared at Law like he was an idiot from where he stood, the water reaching just past his shoulders as he stood on his toes.

"I don't even know what I'm supposed to do."

"You can figure it out."

"You're a horrible teacher," Ace grumbled.

"And you're stalling," Law retorted. Ace's brows furrowed as he stared at the teen, standing strong in the water amongst the waves. He knew if he didn't move soon, Law would start to tease him.

Only a few seconds later, Ace kicked off of the sand at the bottom. In all actuality, Law wasn't far away at all. Maybe only three or four feet – and that was his body, not his hands.

Ace struggled against the water as he stared at the immobile teen. He didn't really know what he was doing. It felt like he was flailing like a fish out of water. He kicked his legs and tried to swing his arms, but he felt like he wasn't going anywhere.

But then, somehow, what felt like an eternity later, he felt hands grab him and hold him up.

Ace took deep breaths, not understanding why he was so tired after flailing like an idiot in the sea. He heard Law chuckled and stared up at the older teen, prepared to glare if he said one teasing word about Ace's horrible attempt at swimming.

"At least you can float. That's a start."

Ace didn't know if he should smack Law or not.

"Doffy, where are we going?"

"Away."

Law stared up at the blond haired man, eyes piercing him. "Doffy", or rather, Donquixote Doflamingo, felt uncomfortable under the child's eyes. The seven year old was too smart for his age, and it was unnerving to the man.

He knew he would get in trouble for this. But he couldn't take this. Even if it was just for a short while, he needed a break. And the boy did too, even if he didn't understand why.

Doflamingo didn't want to tell him though. He didn't want to change everything between the two.

The train car rattled, shaking as it went over a small bump under the tracks. Law let out a surprised sound as his feet slipped on the seat he stood on, sending him tumbling backwards. The blond quickly grabbed him before he could hit the metal floor, sighing in relief that the kid was okay. Doflamingo lifted the child onto his lap and held him close to his chest, barely hearing the soft "thank you" that escaped the child's lips.

The train entered a tunnel. It got much darker, as no lights illuminated the carved, cement cave they traveled in. the snore of one of the five other passengers in the car echoed deeply against the metal. The blond ignored it as he lifted his hand to the boy's head, running his long fingers trhough the short black locks.

Law yawned and shifted closer to the larger body, curling up against him. The young man pulled out both sides of his unzipped jacket and wrapped them around the child, giving him more warmth. Law made a contented sound as his small hands wrapped themselves in the pink shirt beneath his black jacket.

"Sleep, Law. We still have a long way to go."

The child's eyes were fluttering and a few minutes later, the blond heard soft snores leaving the child's mouth.

The train rattled again as it exited the tunnel. Doflamingo looked at the window across from where he sat, staring at the snow falling at a violent pace. He hoped it wouldn't slow their journey because they needed a break.

God knew that they deserved it.

Sabo cried as Ace tried to dry off the cuts on his palms. A bottle of water was next to them, as it had been the only thing Ace could find to clean the wound. He had also managed to snatch some bandages. Women really had everything in their purses.

He didn't really care for the wallet thought. There was nothing of value in there, except these weird plastic cards, so he dropped it and took everything else with him.

"Ace, it hurts!" The three year old whined. Ace sighed and smacked him over the head, resulting in the child stopping his cries for a moment to look at Ace.

"Stop being a crybaby. I know it hurts, but man up," Ace reprimanded, half heartedly glaring at the little boy who sat in front of him. Sabo sniffled pathetically and nodded, biting his lower lip to stop himself from crying. So for the next three minutes, as Ace bandaged the wounds, it was quiet.

When Ace was done, Sabo brought his arms up to wipe at his eyes. He didn't notice his brother reaching into the purse again to pull out something.

"Sabo," The younger boy looked up curiously at his brother, who was holding something small and wrapped in shiny, pretty wrapping out for him. "You did good."

Sabo just blinked at the ball and took it, staring at it before confusedly looking up at Ace.

"Wha's it?"

Ace blinked back at him, surprised.

"You don't know what it is?" Sabo nodded his head. "Unwrap it," Ace told him. Sabo obeyed and began to rip off the pretty colored tin foil, only to be met with a ball of brown. "Take a bite. It'll taste good," Ace looked eager for him to take a bite, so he did.

Sabo had never tasted anything so good in his life.

The little boy smiled widely and began to devour the small ball of what Ace knew to be chocolate. The older brother smiled softly at his younger brother as he licked some of chocolate he had crushed from his hands. He looked up at Ace and smiled a wordless thank you before suddenly yawning. Ace took this as his time to stand.

"Alright, time for bed."

Sabo whined loudly. "Bu' 'm nah tiah." Sabo pouted up at his brother, but then he yawned again. Ace would've let him stay up later, but he learned that Sabo got horribly cranky if he didn't go to bed around this time (whatever time it was) every night.

Grabbing Sabo and lifting him by the arm pits, Ace brought the younger boy over to their nest of blankets that Ace had been collecting for years. He set the younger boy down on it and gently pushed him to lay down, covering him with sheets to help him keep warm.

"Is you gonna sleep?" Sabo asked, voice now thick with sleepiness. Ace ruffled his hair softly and shook his head.

"I'm gonna stay up a little while longer, but don't worry. I'll be right here," Ace whispered soflty. Sabo reached his hand out from under the sheets toward Ace and, as Ace had done every day since he found saound, he took the smaller hand in his.

Sabo fell asleep like that while Ace watched the world pass by from under their bridge, wondering if the world could stop for them for just a moment, to let them bask in that peace forever.

"Mama! Mama!"

Rouge looked down at the sound of soft footsteps pattering towards her. She looked down from the shelf of pastas she was looking at the grocery store and saw her son Ace looking up at her with an excited smile and a box in his hands.

"Can we get this? Can we, can we, can we? Please!" Ace bounced up and down, holding the box up so his mother could see. Rouge glanced at the box and blinked, confused as to why her son would want that.

"Ace, those are dog treats. We don't have a dog."

Ace made a confused sound and looked at the box before looking back at his mother.

"But it says meat!" Ace exclaimed. Rouge blinked again and laughed.

"We can get you some meat in a little bit, but you can't have those treats Ace. Where did you find them?"

Ace pouted and pointed in the direction of one of the neighboring aisles. Rouge looked back and grabbed a pasta box, putting it in the carriage before taking her sons hand. "Let's go put that back and get you some good meat, alright?"

"But all meat is good meat!"

Law wasn't sure what he was supposed to do. Smoker had to run off because Sabo ran off followed by Ace chasing after him, and it left the teen on Luffy duty.

But he hadn't really interacted with the baby in the three weeks they had been there. Most of his interactions had been with Ace and Sabo, trying to keep the two out of trouble and entertained.

He looked down at the baby, nearing three months old, according to the doctor they had visited. Luffy gurgled and flailed his arms a bit as Law moved to sit on one of the benches in the park. The teen reached up on of his hands and poked at the chubby face, but was caught off guard when a small hand gripped at his finger. He tried to pull free, but found it futile. He groaned softly and looked up, watching people pass by and give him strange looks as the baby began to suck on his finger.

Theu probably thought it was his baby or that he kidnapped him, being the idiots they were.

"Law?"

The teen looked up and blinked when he saw one of his elementary school teachers standing before him. She was probably the only teacher he liked in elementary school because she didn't treat him like he was a baby.

"Miss Nico?"

She smiled. "Yes. How are you, Law?" Law motioned for her to sit next to him as he began to speak.

"I'm fine. How are you?"

"I am doing well, thank you. Who is this baby you have?"

Law looked down when Luffy made a loud sound and tugged on his finger. He shifted him to a more vertical position before he answered.

"He's one of the kids that Smoker found. We're watching over them."

Miss Nico blinked and smiled softly. "Is that so? He's quite a cute baby," Robin looked at the baby in the teens arms. "What is his name?"

"We call him Luffy. The two that found him named him that," Law said, flushing slightly because he felt like it was such a girly name and yet here was the boy named Luffy and his teacher was laughing at him now, dammit.

"That's quite the name." She was enjoying this. She always had a sadistic side to her, even back in elementary school. "So you have become a big brother, I presume?"

Law snorted softly as he unconsciously rubbed a hand soothingly up and down Luffy's back when he started to squirm. Robin quirked a smile at the gesture. "Yeah, but I take care of the other two more than Luffy."

"Who are the two other children?" Robin asked curiously.

"Two kids named Ace and Sabo. They ran off – Sabo ran after the ice cream man and Ace chased after him – so Smoker's trying to track them down right now."

Robin hummed and then looked down the path past Law. "I believe that Smoker found the two trouble makers."

Law turned to look the same way and smiled a little. Smoker was holding Sabo, who had a small ice cream cone in his hand, and Ace was walking next to him with two ice cream cones. Law knew he had quite the stomach on him, he could probably devour an entire bucket of KFC chicken legs, but even two ice cream cones with three scoops was a lot.

"Well, I have a meeting to attend to. It was a pleasure to talk with you Law. Tell Smoker I say hello," Robin said, standing and giving him a wave good-bye before walking in the direction she was going before she sat. Law gave a wave and a grunt of affirmation and watched as she walked away until Ace's voice pulled him back to the present.

"Why are you staring at her? Do you like her butt or somethin' like that?" Ace asked after taking a bite of ice cream. Law choked a little in his throat as he stared at the ten year old before him.

"What the hell gave you that idea?" Law asked as Smoker put Sabo on the ground and reached to take Luffy in his arms, ignoring the conversation the two boys were having.

"I dunno. Ah, here, we gotcha some ice cream. Smoker said you liked these flavors," Ace said, handing him the second cone. Law blinked, a little surprised.

"Thanks."

"No problem."

"Nah, Ace?"

"What Sabo?"

Smoker was putting Luffy back in the carriage and the five year old stared at the two older boys, his face covered in chocolate ice cream.

"Are those two fighting over candy with their mouths?"

Ace and Law stared blankly at the child before looking at the aforementioned two people. Ace flushed bright red while Law just gaped a little at the blatant PDA.

"Can we do that too? It looks fun!"

"NO!" Ace and Law shouted at once.

Sabo dropped his ice cream.

Baby blues began to water.

Ace and Law paled as Smoker turned to them with a death glare.

So much for a peaceful outing.
