Violet walked down the hall alongside Audrey. "I'm just saying that he could have helped out around the shop a little more. He's wrecked that place more times than I can count, and he does help out some, but he hasn't even come close to making up all the damage he's caused." The red head said rolling her eyes.
"You know you could probably get him to do it pretty easily." Violet said. "He's not head over heels for you anymore, but he still steals glances at you. Just wait until his eyes start going downwards, at that moment he'll agree to anything." She said. Audrey laughed and shook her head. She enjoyed chatting with Violet. She was younger, but pretty mature for her age.
As they made their way down the hall Wilbur came around the corner. Both he and Violet stopped in their tracks. They looked like deers caught in headlights. It was true that the incident had happened a little more than a week ago, but it might as well have been yesterday to them. They had barely talked, and when they did it was only one or two words. "Hey…" Wilbur offered.
"Hi." Violet said back awkwardly.
Audrey waved towards him. She could feel the tension between the two, and while she had no idea what had happened she felt she needed to step in. "Hey Wilbur. Have you seen Ted around here? I needed to ask him about something." She said.
He pointed over his shoulder. "In the lunch room."
"Thanks." Audrey said as she began walking, pulling Violet along with her. Violet and Wilbur glanced at one another as they passed by. As much as they wanted to talk to each other, they couldn't get rid of the awkward tension from last week. What were they supposed to say to each other after… that?
Wilbur kept making his way down the hall and Violet sighed. She hated not being able to talk to him. She felt like she had lost one of her best friends. "You okay?" Audrey asked.
Violet shook her head. "No…" She answered sadly.
"Do… you want to talk about it?" Audrey asked as they entered the break room.
Violet tossed the thought around in her head. She hadn't told anyone else what had happened, mostly because she had been too embarrassed too. She knew the minute she told them that she and Wilbur had kissed that the other girls would be all over her. Well, Eep probably wouldn't care, but the other girls would heckle and tease her.
She felt her cheeks heat up just remembering it. "Talk about what?" They turned and saw the rest of the girls sitting around the table in the break room. Margo, Anna, Eep, and Penny all looked at them curiously. Violet looked a bit panicked. While she thought of them like sisters, she wasn't sure she was willing to break it in front of all of them like this.
"Is this about what's going on between you and Wilbur?" Anna asked.
Violet winced. Anna had always been the most perceptive when it came to relationships in the group. She'd immediately picked up on Ted's crush on Audrey. She was always saying she and Wilbur would make a cute couple. She had even hinted that Dash and Edith had something going on. It sounded crazy months ago, but now it was starting to hold some weight.
The raven haired heroine scratched her cheek. "Uh… me and Wilbur… we had a bit of an accident and… things are so weird now."
Anna gasped. "Oh my god, are you pregnant?"
Violet grew wide eyed. "What?! No!" She screamed. "We haven't even done anything close to… that! It was just one kiss, and even that was-"
"You kissed?!" Anna asked looking excited. Violet quickly covered her mouth. She hadn't meant to let it slip out. "I knew it! I knew you two liked each other! Way to go Vi!" She said zipping over and hugging her. Violet looked embarrassed. Penny chuckled, Eep just smirked, and Edith had no reaction. Neither of them were gossipy girls, but they were happy for their friend.
Margo on the other hand didn't look as excited. While she would normally be happy to hear that Wilbur and Violet had finally opened up to each other, she knew that their strange interactions over the past week must have had something to do with their kiss. "So… what happened between you two?"
She almost instantly regretted asking when she saw the look on Violet's face. Just as she was about to tell her not to worry about it Violet held her hand up. "I like Wilbur, a lot. But we can't be together. He's not going to be here forever." She stated. The others frowned. They all knew his stay here was temporary, but they never liked talking about it. "He… we decided-"
Eep scoffed. "Are you kidding me? That's the reason you two have been so awkward around each other? Because you kissed and you don't want to get together? I thought he said something to tick you off or something." She said crossing her arms.
Margo nudged her. "Eep." She scolded. "Don't act so blunt about this. It's complicated."
Eep rolled her eyes. "No, you're making it complicated." She said before looking at Violet. "You said that you liked him. And I know I'm not the brightest bulb out there, but I'm pretty sure he likes you too. So if you want to be together then be together." Eep said simply.
Violet looked at her wide eyed. The last person that she had expected to receive love advice from was Eep. Then again it was such straight forward advice, she supposed it fit. "Eep, you don't get it. How can we be in a relationship when we know that any second her could vanish from existence?" She asked.
"Okay, so he's going to leave some day. But you care about him, and he cares about you. So shouldn't you just make sure to treasure the time you have left?" Eep reasoned. "If I knew someone I loved was going to disappear into thin air someday, then I'd make the most of every second with him."
Violet shook her head. She had to be dreaming. Eep had said something… heartfelt. The other girls looked just as shocked as she did. "Wow, that was actually very profound." Margo said.
Eep snorted. "I can be romantic when I want to." She said. "Anyhow it just comes down to taking what you want. You want to be with Wilbur, then go get him."
Violet looked down in thought. Eep did have a point. Wilbur was not going to be here forever, and she was spending time avoiding him. She didn't want to think back years later and say the last interaction she had with him was an awkward hello.
The door suddenly opened and Dash made his way inside the room. "Hey ladies, just come to grab me a snack-" Edith got up from her spot on the couch and marched towards him with a scowl on her face. Dash looked like he was going to back away, but she reached out grabbing the front of his shirt. "Wait, hold on a-"
Edith pulled him forward and kissed him. And not a kiss on the cheek like he'd done at the amusement park. A full on kiss to the lips. Dash looked shocked as she pressed her lips to his. The other girls looked at the sight in stunned silence. After half a minute, Edith finally broke the kiss and pushed Dash back.
He stumbled backwards and landed on his butt, staring up at her with wide eyes and red cheeks. Edith smirked down at him. "Don't play a game you're not ready to finish dork."
Dash shook his head and stared at her as she began walking off. He rubbed his head and tried to sort out what just happened. "What the heck was that?!" Penny said.
Anna looked around. "Hey, does anybody hear that?" She asked. They all looked towards her confused. They didn't hear anything. "It sounds like a phone. Someone should pick it up… because I freaking called it!" She said raising her fist into the air.
Wilbur leaned up against the tree and stared up at the glass ceiling. How could he have been so stupid? How could he have let himself give in like that? Kissing her had not only make things awkward between them, but between the entire group. Everyone could tell there was something between them, and there was tension there. He knew they were trying to help, but it was so weird.
He felt something slide against his face and frowned. Chunky pounced on top of him and began licking him all over. "Ah! Stop it! Chunky, get down! Bad kitty! Bad!" He yelled trying to shove him off. Chunky completely ignored him. As far as the animal could tell, he was feeling depressed. And while he wasn't as close to the boy as he was to Eep, he still had a connection with all the members of the team.
Wilbur struggled under the beast, and then suddenly felt his weight shift off of him. Wilbur looked up and saw that Chunky was now on his back, purring in pleasure. Mina was standing over him, rubbing his belly. He couldn't help but smirk at the scene. Mina was so tiny compared to Chunky, but she could handle him easily. Mina turned back towards him. "You okay?"
He nodded and patted her on the head. "Thanks." He said before sitting back up against the tree. Mina walked over to him and took a seat beside him. Wilbur didn't have any little siblings. The closest he had to siblings at all were his cousins. But Mina had become something like a little sister to him over the last year.
She always followed him around the base, she clung to him. They played together when she was bored, she always came to check on him after missions, and she was always eager to come and show him what she'd done for the day. So needless to say, she had picked up on his depressed mood rather quickly. "Do you want to talk about it?" She asked.
Wilbur scratched his head. Talking to a kid about this seemed pretty desperate. But Mina was a bit mature for her age. And she was in the same boat he was timeline wise. Plus he just felt like talking to someone about this. "I'm sure you know all about the thing between me and Vi." He said leaning his head back.
Mina shook her head no. "Hmm, I thought at this point everyone knew. Well the short story is that I made a big mistake with Violet, and now things are very awkward between us. I don't know how to make things normal again. Or even if I can make them normal." He said running his hand over his face.
"Did you do something bad?" She asked.
Wilbur looked up in thought. Had kissing her been bad? It certainly didn't feel bad. But there were plenty of things that felt good even though they were wrong. He wasn't sure if this classified as one of those things. Violet had wanted to kiss him too. She'd been just as into the kiss as he was. While their feelings for each other were inconvenient, he couldn't call them bad.
"I don't think so…" He muttered.
Mina looked confused. "So why are you upset about it? If it wasn't something bad then neither of you should be upset about it." She reasoned.
Wilbur sighed. The world through the eyes of a kid was so simple. "It's not that easy Mina. What I didn't may not have been bad per se, but it's complicated."
"Doesn't sound complicated."
He pinched the bridge of his nose. She made it sound so simple. He turned to explain it to her, but then noticed someone else was there. It was Violet. "Oh… hey Vi." He said trying to hide the surprise on his face.
She waved a hand. "Hey Wilbur." She said before turning towards Mina and smiling. "Hey Mina, how are you doing today?" She asked sweetly.
Mina smiled back. "Good." She answered. She got up to her feet and began walking off. "I'm going to go get something to eat now, I'm hungry." She said making her way towards the door. Both Violet and Wilbur watched her leave. It was almost as if she knew they were going to talk and needed to be alone. Maybe she did.
Wilbur seemed nervous about being alone with Vi, but she seemed calm. "I… I wanted to talk with you Wilbur." She said shyly.
He shivered slightly. He knew they were going to have to have this awkward talk eventually. He got up and dusted himself off. "Yeah, I guess we should." As much as he'd wanted to avoid this, he knew they needed to try and get back to where they were. They had to work on a team, so they needed to at least be able to look each other in the eye.
"I want to be with you Wilbur." Violet said clearly.
He sighed. "Look, it was weird, and I know it's not like we can just go back to acting like… wait, what did you just say?" He asked raising an eyebrow.
She blushed. It was embarrassing enough to say it the first time, why did he had to make her say it again? "I said I want to be together with you. As in… you know, a couple."
Wilbur shook his head. "Um… but you know we can't right?"
Violet grew a determined look in her eyes. "I don't see why we can't. I like you Wilbur. And… I think you like me too, if that kiss were anything to go off of. So why shouldn't we be together?"
He couldn't believe this. Out of all the things he thought she might open with, this had never crossed his mind. "Wha… Violet, you know I can't stay here right. Eventually the timeline will be altered and this version of me will-"
"I don't care." Violet said sternly. "I know that you won't be here forever. But I want to make the most of the time that you are here."
Wilbur stared at her. She was serious about this. "Violet, no. I can't do this. Do you know how hard it's going to be if we start something and I just… you've never just suddenly lost someone you care about. It hurts Violet, it hurts a lot. I'm not going to do that to you."
"Wilbur, if you're trying to spare me the hurt of you leaving, then you're too late. Whether we do this or not I'm going to miss you when you leave. Everyone is going to miss you. You're not just part of our team, you're a part of our family."
He bit his lip and grew a guilty look on his face. It was true, he thought of the others like family as well. He'd lost his first, and they'd become his second. He knew he shouldn't have gotten attached to anyone. It would only make it harder. But he couldn't stop himself. They'd all been on missions, saved each other's lives. How couldn't you grow a connection to people like that?
"Wipe that guilty look of your face Wilbur. We all know how much it's going to hurt to lose you, but all that hurt is still worth it to be friends with you." She said. "You brought this group together. You were the one who got us to rescue the others from that base. If it weren't for you none of this would have happened."
Wilbur rubbed his neck. "I… I only did it to save the future. I never meant to…"
Violet cut him off. "But you did. And we'll all grateful for it." She said grabbing his hands. "I know that you're going to leave someday, and I know it's going to hurt. But being with you is worth that pain."
Wilbur looked down at her stunned. He didn't really know how to respond to something like that. He struggled to find an answer, when suddenly they heard an alarm go off. The two shared a glance before running towards the conference room. The alarm meant danger, so whatever it was they wanted to say could wait.
As they made their way down the hall, Wilbur's phone rang. He quickly picked it up. "It's them." His mother's voice immediately answered. "It's Scourge and the others."
Wilbur's face paled.
