Despite the wanton destruction happening outside in the rest of the city, the Sanctum Sanctorum of New York City was remarkably unchanged from the last time Peter had been in there. This Peter assumed was due to the magical wards set up around the establishment, as, through the giant window that overlooked the foyer of the Sanctorum, Peter could see stuff bouncing off the window as if it were made of plexi-glass.
The foyer for the moment was completely dark, before Strange waved a hand at the large, stone fireplace. A large ball of flame erupted from the fireplace, casting a healthy amount of light around the room, even though Peter knew that the Sanctorum had electricity.
When he pointed this out to Strange, the sorcerer supreme said, "Fire's better. Doesn't attract too many... unwelcome guests to the Sanctum."
Peter was about to ask how they could possibly get through the wards of the Sanctum, when he realized that the mass teleportation may have brought more powerful beings than your average villain of the week criminal.
At the sight of Strange conjuring up the fire, Korra gave an accusing glare at Peter. "I thought you said there was no bending on your world?"
"It's not bending.", said Peter. "It's, uh, magic?"
Korra scoffed. "No such thing as... well, I guess this day has been weird enough already...", she conceded.
Jaehaerys, upon hearing this, was looking at the fireplace with great awe. "Magic.", he said, looking at the fire in the grate almost hungrily.
"Do you have magic on your world, your highness?", asked Jinora.
"Your highness? Haven't heard that one before.", said Jaehaerys, before turning to Jinora. "No, little one. We used to, many years ago, but it doesn't exist anymore. However, there are prophecies that one day..."
"Dear husband.", said Alysanne. "This may not be the best time."
As Jaehaerys gave a fond smile to his lady wife, Wong spoke up. "She's right, enough small talk. We are dealing with a problem that has plagued the multiverse since the very beginning."
"What do you mean?", said Peter, raising an eyebrow. "This has happened before?"
Strange, who was seated on one of the high-back chairs near the fire, spoke up. "Wong, we'll need the chalkboard."
Wong rolled his eyes, and muttered, "Great." He then left the room for a few minutes, and returned with a normal chalkboard.
Strange got up, and begin drawing lines with the chalk. Eventually, the board was filled with lines, all running horizontally parallel to each other.
"Imagine each of these lines represents a universe.", said Strange, tapping with his chalk at each line. "Some of them are quite different from each other, while some have only slight variations to the next. This is the multiverse."
"Each of you have come from a different universe in this multiverse. Peter, Wong, and myself from one universe." He labeled one such line with a number one. "You guys from another universe." He pointed at Korra and her compatriots and labeled another line with two. "And the king and queen from a third one." He labeled one last line as three.
"OK, but that doesn't explain how this is something that's happened before.", said Peter.
Strange and Wong looked at each other. "Throughout the multiverse, someone (or thing) has been scooping up various peoples, places, and objects, and putting them in close proximity with each other.", said Wong. "This being (or beings) must have unimaginable power to do so, thus we can't understand his motivations. Whether he's using them for some grand plan of his, or just experimenting with how different universes would react to each other."
"Wait, this all happened because some thing wanted to perform a science experiment on us?", said Korra, incredulously.
"Well, technically, a societal experiment, but yes, that's only one of the many theories.", said Strange. "The point is that we are all stuck here, at least for the time being. Our number one goal here is to quiet down everyone in this vast city, so that we can figure out a way home."
Most of the room seemed to agree with this statement, as Pema said, "Just how big is this city?"
"Big.", said Strange, simply. "Unfortunately, I've been unable to contact any superhero teams from our world, like the Avengers or X-Men, to get some help in bringing order to the city."
As Korra mouthed the words X-Men to Peter incredulously, Peter said, "Hold on, don't you have some magic devices for contacting the other superheroes or something?"
"Not at the moment. The city must be filled with alternate magic users, as it's become almost impossible to send a signal through. For example, we've located Avengers Tower, but it's in some magic dead zone. We aren't able to send signals, teleport with our slip-rings, nothing."
"I was planning on heading their myself, but... I need backup of some kind, as well as leaving someone in charge of the Sanctum while I'm gone. And since we managed to locate you..."
Strange turned to Peter, who nodded. "All right, I'll go with you. It'll be nice to see the good ol' Avengers again."
Strange nodded his acknowledgement, then turned to the rest of the group. "Wong will stay here to guard the Sanctum, along with the other sorcerers we have here. Anyone want to come with us?"
"I'm in.", said Korra, immediately.
"Korra, you can't.", said Pema. "Tenzin said you need to stay on Air Temple Island. You can send us back to the island, right?"
Strange nodded his head. "It'll be far more safer for you out on the bay.", Strange said to Korra.
"Don't worry, I'm the Avatar. I can do this.", said Korra, looking fired up.
Pema was about to protest, but Strange said, "Good, we'll need all the help we can get."
He then turned to Jaehaerys and Alysanne. "We must head back to our castle, the Red Keep, and restore some semblance of order there. We also need to get our dragons off of... 'Air Temple Island', as you call it.", said Jaehaerys.
"Wong will return you to the island.", said Strange, before turning to Peter and Korra. "Let's get going."
