Great Houses in 320 AC
House STARK
House Stark had trouble after the War for the Dawn. With a kingdom in ruins, and a massive population exodus towards the south of the Neck, rebuilding was paramount. Under the guidance of Lady Regent Catelyn Stark, the North gradually managed to build itself. Some keeps, like Queenscrown or Deepwood Motte, which were overrun by the dead, were kept in ruins as a warning of what lay beyond the wall, and new keeps constructed in their place.
In Wintertown itself, a large monument was constructed, with royal funds, to the testament of those who gave their lives so that the dead might live. Representing a man carrying a sword and a woman carrying an axe, these gigantic stone statues point towards the north with Winterfell castle at their back, a reminder of where the fight went after the victory at Winterfell.
Still, even twenty years later, the scars have not begun to totally heal. Despite their Princely house status, the North has only barely managed to find advantage in their new relationship with the Iron Throne, especially with the return of Summer and the return of the usual taxes on goods such as grain and wheat.
It seems that with the end of the War for the Dawn, the North has chosen to step back into the relative isolation it found itself in before Robert's Rebellion, as a sense of normalcy is slowly coming back…

House TULLY
House Tully was one of the major winners of both the War for the Throne and the War for the Dawn. With most of their forces escaping the conflict intact, Lord Edmure Tully, as Hand of the King, did not have any problems in solidifying his hold over the Riverlands and its new domains.
The Targaryens honored their promise, giving the castles of Deep Den and Hornvale to the Tullys, in exchange for their fealty proclaimed at Ashford. With the gold and silver from their mines, added to those of the Golden Tooth, Lord Edmure managed to quickly rebuild the burnt-out Riverlands.
Also, due to the War for the Dawn, many Northerners fleeing the carnage up north, found themselves resettling in the Riverlands, mainly in the lands of Houses Frey, Mallister and Blackwood. This added workforce allowed the Riverlands to rise spectacularly, taking advantage of the Westerlander and Vale internal conflicts, a still recovering Reach and an increasingly isolationist Dorne.
Still, the Riverlands were not perfect. The Iron Islands, similarly to the Lannisters, proved to be a poisoned gift, with revolts and instability rapidly emerging, though not to the levels of their neighbours to the west.
Therefore, after fifteen years of good and loyal services, Lord Edmure Tully resigned from his post as Hand of the King, leaving it to Lord Baelor Hightower, and went back to running the affairs of his kingdom, to avoid seeing his hard work completely disappear in a few years.
Thanks to his guidance, a sense of stability has started to come back, though the Ironborn problem is still there, and some Westermen still harbor resentment towards the Tullys, though they do not envy the fate of their former masters.

- - - - no issue. The issue of the Orkmont succession is currently a hot discussion for Lord Edmure Tully, as there is a debate of the crown confiscating the lands at the death of Lord Korros, or it reverting to Tully ownership.
- - - The case of the Golden Tooth is particular, as Lady ALYSANNE LEFFORD was an only child. With her wedding to Lord Edmure, she became both the Lady of Riverrun and of the Golden Tooth. As such, she appointed a castellan, and the Golden Tooth was incorporated into the Tully lands. The second-born son (Tristifer Tully) will inherit the Golden Tooth and take the name 'Lefford' to perpetuate tradition.
House ARRYN
House Arryn's position after the War for the Dawn should have been one of strength, maybe on the level of Dorne, if not a little lower.
However, things were a lot more complicated. Yes, the Valemen took less losses than the Northmen or Riverlanders, for example, fighting at Karhold and White Harbor, most notably.
The houses that came out with the most prestige out of the war were the Royces and Waynwoods, with Robar Royce leading the defense of Deepwood Hill, at one against a thousand, while the Waynwoods led the Vale contingent at the Battle of Winterfell.
The prestige of house Arryn, though, had taken a hit. Harrold Arryn himself only briefly participated in the War for the Dawn, preferring to use the Vale forces to secure the supply line between the besieged Moat Cailin and the Riverlands and Vale.
Following the War for the Dawn, the Valemen took a massive hit. With Lord Edmure as Hand, still resenting the perceived betrayal at Tumbleton, the Vale was completely sidelined from the kingdoms, for the Riverlands' greatest profit.
And with every passing year, Harrold Arryn's strong grip on the Vale turned very iffy, with only the Royce marriage keeping him in a semblance of power. And despite attempts to solidify this power, Harrold Arryn failed at every turn.
In practice, the Royces ruled the Vale.
Harrold Arryn did try to adopt the Dornish model as a last-ditch effort to keep the Vale unified, to follow the path of a 'deliberate isolation', but this was also a complete failure. While Dorne had the resources, connections, unity and leadership to make such a move, the Vale was completely unprepared for such an undertaking.
Most houses began disrespecting the authority of House Arryn, sought marriages outside of the Vale, and, for some, decided to outright rebel.
The Sisters rebellion came in 317 AC, with Lord Triston Sunderland declaring himself King of the Sisters, free from House Arryn. And, to Lord Arryn's surprise, not a lot of Valemen followed his call, leading to an invasion attempt that led to most of Harrold's fleet being sunk by the Sistermen, and the survivors being either massacred or taken prisoner on the shore.
Out of options, Harrold Arryn asked for royal intervention, which saw the humiliating arrival of Lord Edmure Tully and his retinue, in full Riverlander colors, to the Bloody Gate and the Eyrie. In an incident where Lord Edmure openly insulted Lord Harrold's conduct of the war, it was said that only the risk of civil war stopped Lord Harrold Arryn from cutting him down then and there.
Instead, the Royal Fleet moved in to the Sisters, which fell without a fight. Triston Sunderland agreed to surrender 'to the Royal authorities' represented by Ser Monterys Velaryon, and a peacekeeping force was not even needed on the island.
The whole incident was a humiliating defeat for Harrold Arryn. Even though the Sisters were back into the fold, not a single Vale troop contributed to this, and the Sisters were given some exemptions, notably the need to report to the Coldwaters (and thus, to the Royces), instead of the Arryns. A humiliation in theory, but in practice, it meant that the Sistermen would not answer to the Eyrie.
This left House Arryn very vulnerable, and the Vale is looking fractured. Though, many hope that the next generation of Arryns, being half-Royces, will manage to bring unity. That is, if Harrold Arryn does not squander it all…

House LANNISTER
For House Lannister, the past decades have been extremely rough.
After the utter destruction of their forces during the War for the Throne and the War for the Dawn, the fact that House Lannister remained a great house was really the only solace for them. They had lost most of their borders, either to the Riverlands, or to the Crownlands, and thus most of their defensive positions had been wiped off in an instant.
The fortresses of the Golden Tooth, Deep Den and Silverhill were now gone, and with it most of the defensive potential of the Westerlands, and a good quarter to third of their wealth.
And that was without considering the plunder of Casterly Rock. With their position as complete victors, and without a safety line and local ally like the Tyrells had with Dorne, Casterly Rock was completely vulnerable and ripe for the taking.
As such, the Lannisters could not oppose the total plundering of their castle. At least, a good chunk of it. That wealth heavily weakened House Lannister further, and that combined with the debts totally forgiven to the Iron Throne and the further reparations to Dorne and the Riverlands stopped the Lannister ascendancy before it even started.
As such, Martyn Lannister had a lot of work in front of him. His twin brother had been killed in the North, his father sent to the Wall, and with the prestige of his House badly shaken, he had to rely on his mother, Dorna Swyft, and his cousin, Stafford Lannister, to rule the early years.
One could say Stafford ruled more than Martyn, and the Westerlands did not really thank him for it. They notably got entangled in the Iron Islands mess. The supposed gift that would compensate for the loss of the border territories was a poisoned one, with the Iron Islands being impossible to completely subjugate.
And this especially since the Lannister way of dealing with the Ironborn differed greatly from the Tully and Stark way. While the Starks decided to integrate while respecting the traditions of the Ironborn, and the Tullys decided to give the isles a healthy amount of self-rule, the Lannisters very much considered the Ironborn as second or even third-class citizens.
The main houses were evicted, and landed knights took control of the main castles of the area. This, of course, led to the First Ironborn Rebellion, funded, of course, by the nearby islands of Harlaw, Blacktyde and Orkmont, and the secret support of Lord Edmure Tully, who saw an opportunity to weaken his old rival even further.
The rebellion ended in a stalemate, with the Ironborn noble houses being restored to their positions, but with "Andal colonisation settlements" being placed all over the isles.
Of course, this could only end badly, and the isles folded into the Second and Third Ironborn rebellions, to the point where the Iron Throne was getting sick of it.
After the death of Stafford Lannister, then Dorna Swyft, Martyn Lannister tried to hand the islands over to the Iron Throne, without much success.
As such, the isles are now considered a semi-penal colony. If you were sent there, it was either because you committed a crime, or angered the wrong person. Living there for Westerlanders has become hell, although the brutal repression tactics are beginning to show some kind of results, especially on the island of Old Wyk. But the price, as usual, is too steep for House Lannister to pay. And in the meantime, Tully grows richer, and the Tyrells are rising once again…

House TYRELL
The Reach did take a beating in the War for the Throne. Bruised at Storm's End, battered at Oldtown, beaten at Riverrun, then at Kinrock, the Battle of Highgarden really stood alone in an ocean of setbacks.
Yet, the Reacher spirit of warfare and chivalry lived on, even during the War for the Dawn. At Moat Cailin, the Reachers and Dornish held, and prevented the dead from overrunning the Neck, keeping the Kingsroad and the vital artery of the Kingdoms alive.
Mace Tyrell, elected Lord Commander of the Night's Watch after the end of the conflict, also managed to lead the Watch very competently, from expeditions at the Wall, to rebuilding the Watch and the North, to installing advanced posts at Hardhome and later Whitetree, the new headquarters of the Watch.
As for the Reach itself, there were hard times ahead. Goldengrove and Oldtown were ruins, Highgarden was driven to the cusp of bankruptcy, and not a lot of other houses fared any better: Horn Hill taken by the Dornish, Ashford and Bitterbridge ravaged by war, Tumbleton taken, the Arbor ruined…only Old Oak had been relatively spared.
But thankfully, Dornish help managed to keep the Reach afloat. Loans, weddings, dowries and trade managed to keep the Reach alive throughout the Winter, and, like a phoenix, it slowly began to rise from the ashes.
Under Willas Tyrell's competent leadership, the Reach licked its wounds, and the bountiful fields bloomed once again.
Thanks to the lifeline thrown by Dorne, the Reach had endured, something that the Targaryens were not too happy about.
Of course, this meant that keeping the links between Dorne and the Reach was essential for House Tyrell, and especially Willas. Since House Targaryen was intent on making sure House Tyrell's power was curbed, he had no choice but to rely on his newfound allies.
And while the Targaryens did try to break apart House Tyrell's careful links, the combined politicking of Willas Tyrell and Quentyn Martell made it impossible.
The Reach had suffered for the good part of fifteen years, but these times were over. Spring had come, and Summer would follow. The flowers bloomed, the fields became rich, and House Tyrell grew strong once more.

House TARGARYEN
Conquerors but not Kings, this is a bit what the situation of House Targaryen looks like at the advent of the Fourth Century AC.
While House Targaryen does rule over the Seven Kingdoms, these are very much fragmented. The North is ruined, the Vale is unstable, the Iron Islands do not recognize any real authority, and Dorne keeps on drifting further towards de facto independence.
And while the Westerlands and Reach have been humiliated but managed to save the essential parts, it is not the case of the Stormlands. Split between the Crownlands and Dorne, the Stormlands have ceased to exist. Something which greatly annoyed the Stormlords.
This proved to be a thorn in the side of the Targaryens: to manage to control such a martial state, combined to instability in the Vale and Iron Islands, and the resurgence of the Reach. Everything combined made it very difficult, and it seemed only dragons kept the peace for a time.
King Aegon VI, though, managed through several royal processions, to tour the Stormlands and ease some of the Stormlords' fears. Either through kind but empty gestures such as relaxation of taxes, or promises of strengthening the Dornish border, to offering many Stormlander landed knights lands and keeps in the new Royal Protectorate of the Stepstones.
In the end, Aegon VI's efforts were successful. The Stormlands managed to slowly accept the direct Targaryen rule, though most lords still go to the Baratheons first, be it Lord Regent Davos Seaworth, or Lady Shireen, once she had reached her majority.
In fact, Davos Seaworth's death in 319 AC came as a shock for most of the Stormlords, and Lady Shireen Baratheon herself attended his funeral, along with Aegon VI and major representatives of nearly every kingdom.
As for House Targaryen, the musical chairs in the Council continued unimpeded. Originally constituted of Edmure Tully as Hand, Baelor Hightower as Master of Coin, Ynys Allyrion as Master of Laws, Monford Velaryon as Master of Ships, Daeron Vaith as Master of Whisperers, Orwyle as Grand Maester and Barristan Selmy as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, this council was now completely gone, leaving only Baelor Hightower, who took the Handship after Edmure Tully resigned.
The Master of Laws, Ynys Allyrion, resigned as well, and was replaced by Brynden Blackwood, another Riverlander, at the time appointed by Edmure Tully to avoid raising a Valeman. Monford Velaryon, Lord of the Tides, also eventually stepped down as Master of Ships in favor of his son, Monterys. The position of Master of Coin was the one which swapped hands the most. Originally intended for Baelor Hightower, Lord Jon Connington, Lord Addam Marbrand and Lord Edwyn Frey filled these positions, before it was finally occupied by Ser Lyonel Tyrell.
The position of Master of Whisperers stayed, for its part, Dornish. Vaith was succeeded by Qorgyle, while the Grand Maester, Orwyle, passed in 308 AC and was replaced by the Riverlander Edwyle.
The Kingsguard was, of course, not spared. Ser Barristan Selmy passed away in 305 AC, and, despite the Crown wishing to reward Arys Oakheart or Balon Swann, it was Rolly Duckfield that took command of the Kingsguard. Ser Arys and Ser Balon remain in the Guard to this day, along with Ser Belwas.
But this leaves three spots.
Daemon Sand was offered a white cloak, which he denied in favor of a place in Prince Daeron's guard. The Dothraki Rakharo was also considered, but passed over for political reasons.
The three spots were not filled until the end of the War for the Dawn, with three knights having proved their valor: Ser Hendry Bracken of Stone Hedge, Ser Olyvar Frey of the Twins, and Ser Robin Potter, though Ser Robin died in the War of the Stepstones. He would be replaced by Ser Andrew Estermont.
Though, House Targaryen is now locked in a fight to regain its influence. Dorne and the Reach are linked, the North too busy rebuilding, the Vale unstable, the Westerlands in pain and the Riverlands amassing power: the days ahead will be decisive for House Targaryen. As long as they have dragons, a semblance of peace will last. But peace is fickle, and dragons have died off before…

House MARTELL
From what was considered a backwater to the richest and arguably most powerful kingdom of all, that is the success story that was Dorne.
House Martell, like almost all the other kingdoms, did participate in the War for the Dawn and the War for the Throne, but unlike the others: they had advantages.
Unlike the North, their forces and kingdom did not get completely annihilated during the War for the Dawn. Dornish forces fought at Moat Cailin, alongside the Reachers, keeping the supply line to the North open, but did not take horrific casualties.
Unlike the Riverlands, Crownlands, Stormlands or Reach, they did not have to suffer the war coming to their kingdom to completely wipe out entire pans of their kingdom.
Unlike the Westerlands, Iron Islands, Reach or Stormlands, their armies did not get shattered and reduced to a meer fraction of what they were just seven years prior.
Unlike the Vale, there were no ill feelings between Dorne and the Crown, at least at first. Prince Quentyn kept his kingdom mostly united (with the exception of the rebellious House Uller and the new Stormlander houses), and Dorne had the advantage of its newfound exports.
Over the years of peace that followed the War for the Dawn, Prince Quentyn expanded on these efforts: in ten years, everyone was jealous of Dornish keeps.
That and their trade efforts helped Dorne soar to new heights. The new fleet was made to escort Dornish trading vessels as far as Yi-Ti, all the while Dorne continued its efforts to produce everything the Free Cities made for cheaper.
And with the Slave Uprisings and the instability generated by the fall of Volantis as well as the Civil War in Yi-Ti, traders, merchants and artists came to Dorne in droves. Soon enough, Dorne developed its own glassware, its own spice gardens, its own tea and rice plantations…all the while, it also expanded its own exports, perfume, soap, lavender, olives, oranges…everything one would want.
Of course, it wasn't all sunshine for the Martells, who still had to police the extremely rebellious Marches. From Starpike to Fawnton, bandit raids and outlaws continued to plague the region, which were slowly suffocated, notably from help of the Targaryens of Summerhall.
Though, the rift between the Crown and Dorne continued to grow. Only Prince Aemon helped mend that rift, through the union of Prince Daeron and Princess Arianne, although Prince Quentyn refrained from breaking relations with the Iron Throne altogether.
Instead, one would think that we are back to the days of King Robert, with Dorne acting independently while swearing that they are loyal to the throne.
A situation that benefits the Martells, certainly. And with dividends paying in their alliance with the Reach, they keep on extending their power and influence. Though, with the return of Spring and Summer, and the resurgence of the Riverlands and Reach as great powers, how long will House Martell stay at the top?
