I hear footsteps in beat with splashes. I look up to the clock and both hands were on three. I know it's Dr. Fuji, as there is only one person I know who would ever come this early. He was coming to Blue Ward.

"Matron," he yells from the end of Yellow ward as he swings the doors wide open. He had no consideration for the 90 patients we had in the clinic. His legs sway side to side as his knees tumble to the floor. His smell was a potent mix of beer and body odour. I would rather be stuck in an elevator full of koffins. He tries to compose himself by using the nearest bar to pull himself up. "Why is the floor so wet?" he slurs before bouncing back in the puddles.

I shake my head and pointed to the big bathroom to the left. "I'll tell you when you've sobered up. Get into the shower at once," I tell him. There is no way he can do his job properly in this state.

"Bleugh," he pushes himself against the wall and chuckles. "I don't take orders by a mere pokémon like you." He gets a small bottle from his pocket and inhales every drop he can devour. "How is Mew?"

"She's better now she's had something to eat," I reply. I snatch the bottle of them and put it in the small trash bin near the kitchenette. Someone should empty the trash can soon, as it's nearly full.

"You have no right to tell me what to do," he roars. "Are you trying to destroy my clinic?" Gets another bottle from his pocket and throws it at me. I shake the broken glass of my back, open the bottom cabinet and grab a dustpan and brush to sweep the glass away. I don't want anyone else getting hurt. My back stings, but I can heal easier than the patients. He's a nightmare to work with when he's been drinking.

Dr. Fuji crawls back to his office and locks the door. My mentor is a tragedy on legs. He is only in his thirties, but I know centenarians with more life than him. I bet by nine o'clock, he will be sober and ready to start his new projects. But one of these days, he's going to seriously hurt somebody. It could be me, another member of staff, or worst of all, the patients.

After Mew went to sleep, I heard an alarm coming from Yellow Ward. The clinic lights flash strong red lights and beep loudly. It wasn't until I turn the alarms off, was when everything returned to normal. I look around the unit and see a vulpix with her tail wrapped to where alarm bell is.

The patients in Yellow ward have much more freedom than the others, they're not restricted to cells. Those that can will often wander about in search of their previous owners or for something to do.

The vulpix, named Sugar drives staff mad by climbing up walls and excreting everywhere other than the places she should be. Her trainer died, but she still actively hunts for her.

"Tilly!" Vulpix squeals with tears in her face. She jumps onto the other patient's beds and cries out again. "Are you in here, Tilly? It's me, Sugar!" Sugar sees me and hops over to me. "Matron, has my trainer called in today?" Before I could reply, Sugar adds, "Her name is Tilly Birds."

"Tilly's gone," I say as I pick her up with my small arms. She clings to me and rubs her face against me. "She's gone to a place called Heaven to become an angel." I'm not sure if Heaven exists, but I think Sugar should know that Tilly is no longer with us. "She'll always be watching over you."

"She should have told me," Sugar snaps. "I didn't even get to say goodbye or wish her good luck."

"Why don't you go back to sleep?" I suggest to her. "It's your last day at the clinic today. In a few hours, you will be off to Celadon City. And you'll out of this place forever."

"Oh that's wonderful," Sugar says with a smile on her face. She walks to her bed and curls over to the bottom corner. "Do you think I'll find Tilly?"

I smile. Even though I disagree with the concept of her being sold in a game corner, she would be better being far away from this place. Vulpixes are very popular in Kanto, she'll get a new home in no time. "Hopefully, you'll find another trainer who will love you just as much as Tilly did."

"Shut up!" one of the patients hiss. It's Cranky, a grumpy little abra that lives up to his name. "I want to sleep and I can't. I'm fed up with everyone jumping on my bed. I want to teleport myself back home, but I can't and I don't know why!"

Team Rocket had created a gas that prevented the move teleport from working. Cranky is another one that's due to be shipped to Celadon Game Corner later on. In fact, by the end of the day, Yellow Ward will be almost empty.

Another abra called Sid sat up and glares at Cranky. "Why don't you shut up?" Sid snorts.

Then, Eden, an eevee pops out from under his blanket. "Hey guys, I was having a nice dream there. I had a dream that I was a strong and powerful jolteon."

"Get back to bed," Cranky screams as he slams his head against the pillow.

"Try and keep the noise down," I announce to everybody. "Some pokémon are still sleeping. And it's a big day today. For some of you, it will be your last day here."

"Oh thank Arceus for that!" Cranky says as he turns with his back facing the wall. "Fed up with this dreadful place."

"You cheeky bugger," Sid hisses. "You complain if we make the tiniest of sound, yet you make the most noise."

"Now, now," I intervene between them before they start a fight. "Just remain civil just for a few more hours."

"Good bloody riddance!" Cranky adds. He always wants to have the last say. On my way out, they all go back to sleep. I don't know what they're life will be like. They might get a good trainer or they might get a bad trainer. They might not even get sold. I don't know what will happen to them, but I know the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

Cranky's irritation is a possible side effect from the performance drugs he's been given. An overdose on them can cause hallucinations and unpredictable behaviour. One of our bellsprouts from this ward is now in intensive care after drinking a bottle of bleach. Chemicals can be fatal to grass types, even with our advanced medicine, I doubt that he will ever wake up again.

I really felt bad for the bellsprout: I know nothing about him, other than he's male. He and the other bellsprouts didn't have a proper name either; just Bellsprout A, Bellsprout B and Bellsprout C.

Bellsprout B is behind blue tatty curtains in a coma with a life support machine covering his body and an oxygen mask covering his face. Below Bellsprout's bed is a machine trying to pump out all the toxic out of his body. Dr. Fuji wants to transfer Bellsprout B to Blue Ward for experiments, but I'm fighting for Bellsprout B to go peacefully.

Even if Bellsprout B does wake up from the coma, he's not going to have any quality of life. His organs are damaged beyond repair and Dr Fuji wants to turn Bellsprout B into a lean mean fighting machine? It won't work. Bellsprout B will never be able to walk again. His plans will not work.

Bellsprout B is still breathing... but only just.
