POV:Third Person

Jared had been enjoying college a lot. He was enrolled at Lehigh on a football scholarship, which meant that he was very social. The jocks liked his good-natured sportsmanship, the more scholarly enjoyed his intellectual company (he was majoring in electrical engineering) and the ladies especially liked him, thanks to his All-American good looks. And damn, did he like them! He really enjoyed the company of his female fanbase, but in the meantime, he was looking for something more, someone…more.
And he found her about six weeks into his first semester. He'd been up early one Saturday morning, running in the track circuit when he'd seen her first. She was dark haired and dark-eyed with a body made for sin and wonderful, lustrous hair that he wanted to run his fingers through. But before he could approach her, she'd sped away, gone faster than the wind. Over the next weeks, he kept out an eye for his dark-haired beauty and managed to snatch glimpses of her (always walking fast and away), usually with a tall blonde chick, sometimes with a few other friends. Good God she was beautiful! And Jared wanted her.
So he put out feelers for her and obtained tidbits of information. Her name was Rose Hathaway (befitting name for a beautiful girl) and she hailed from a private school in Montana. The blonde-Lissa-was not only her best friend, but also her roomie and the girls didn't normally attend frat parties on the weekend, instead disappeared for the weekends, returning home, wherever that was. Rose kickboxed regularly in the gym and her fighting was a thing of beauty (Jared had seen her break his friend Shawn's nose with one punch when Shawn-like an idiot-tried to insinuate that Rose had untoward feeling towards Lissa). And the normally-jean-and-tee clad girl who could easily qualify as an athlete elected instead to spend her time holed away in her room or in the library.

Jared wanted to woo her, but he wanted to do it right. In spite of being one of the most eligible men on campus, Rose had only suspiciously glared at him when he'd tried to pull a 'Mr. Slick' introduction. So, he'd set about becoming her friend first. Easier said than done.
In the end, it was Lissa who unwittingly helped him. Lissa and Jared shared one class that unfortunately Rose did not, but that gave Jared an opportunity to befriend the blonde, and through her, Rose. And the more he interacted with her, the more he felt besotted by her, but Rose didn't give off any vibes of even liking him.
Even though Jared had wheedled his way into Rose's library group, she refused to run with him in the mornings, saying she preferred a bit of peace and solitude after waking up. And tactfully, but deliberately, she managed to waylay his plans of spending one-on-one-time with her. So he bided his time.
It wasn't till Halloween that Jared, dressed as a zombie, gathered the courage to ask her to a party. He made his way to her dorm-room, doing his best to keep his cool, already knowing that Lissa was away, having seen her at one of the frat parties, dancing with a masked raven-haired dude in a Dracula ensemble.
Jared didn't get further than the oak tree a few yards away from the dorm when he spotted her. Racing down the staircase with her face stretched into a beatific laugh and her hair wildly tumbling behind her. Before he could call her, a tall man stepped away from a black SUV just in time to catch Rose as she launched herself at him. Jared watched, slightly gaping, as Hathaway wound herself tightly around the tall, dark stranger, disengaging only to take his hand and lead him to her room. Jared spent a couple more minutes at the base of the tree before he shook his head and walked away.

His friendship with Rose stayed the same, but he began to notice small things about her like how sometimes her eyes sparkled when her phone buzzed with a text, or how she diligently disappeared every night at 11-be it hail or rain-with her cellphone pressed to her ear. Or even how she sometimes wore baggy sweaters that were many sizes bigger than her and smelled like a man's cologne. No one noticed, but he did. He'd never even had a chance with her, but forgetting her was easier said than done.
